What's your MAJOR??

After going to one of the post, i thought of this thread idea. Also, i need some ideas on what major i should take, i keep on switching from medical to computer to undecided. So please grace me with what major you are taking or will be taking or took. and if its not too much to ask a little description of it as well if its not that well known. Onegai?!

im gonna take nursing as major he he... typical filipino major ha ha!!! its not really what i wanna do but i figured that i can travel someday to some countries besides US that need nurses so yeah...

besides nursing.. i want to do an automechanic or a computer major... but i dont think im gonna do those though

I was an art major and dropped out after 3 years... then I was an engineering major and dropped out after 3 more years... since then I have worked as an engineer of one kind or another, mostly at universities ;^)

Getting a degree is better than not getting one, but it doesn't matter a whole lot what you get it in, as long as you don't get it in law. Given any sort of degree you can pick and choose some range of jobs, whereas without a degree you will spend about twice as long as it would have taken to get the degree to get a proper job.

Currently I am paid to hack Linux by Caltech, which is a pretty good job ;^)

Yeah, that's what they say nowadays. Here it seems like a B.A. is like a high school diploma was 5-10 years ago >_< Many receptionist jobs now require a B.A. in something...lol.

I'm an Early-Education and English Lit. major. In order to become a teacher in the U.S. you have to have a double major.

If you want to do something in the medical industry, electrical engineering is actually not a bad path. Medical imaging in particular (e.g. CT, MRI, ultrasound) are very heavily algorithm based, and programming skills can be useful. hmmm this is a good idea, actually i'm quite interested. Thank you too everyone who has posted!! You guys are truly helping me out, I've been stressed about this issue for quite a while, and now i'm slowly starting to see what path i should take. Thank you sooo Much!!!!!!!!

First, you have to consider what you would like to prioritize - financial gain or your interest? Then check out the local market for the next couple of years. Ask around what would be in demand for the following years. You are only 18 right? so be sure to think about this thing and listen to other people's advise but be sure to follow your gut feeling or instinct.
It took me around 12 years to finish college...no kidding. I studied 3 majors, I shifted and cannot decide on what to do. Made my decisions based on other people's comments and suggestions and not of my own. My first course was Masscomm at UP then shifted to Tourism then took up Education units. I stopped school 2 to 3 times but kept coming back cuz I wanted to finish college cuz we Filipinos stressed the importance of having a diploma. Now that I look back on it - no regrets but it wasn't great either. Lets just say that I would not let my son do the same thing or "mistakes" I did.

I am currently working on my Geophysics degree. I dont know whether I want to go towards Seismology (earthquake studies) or Volcanology (volcano studies) yet, but I enjoy both equally and I will have graduate school to make the final decision.

Just take your time and think over what you do. It's a tough decision that you will have to stick with. Make a list of pro's and con's and then take into consideration what you desire most. I have known that I wanted to be a geologist ever since grade school and I know it is definately where I want to go with my life. Just make sure you will have no regrets and good luck with whatever path you choose.

I forgot to mention that you should be extra careful when picking out schools b/c a lot of the curriculums out ther are still relatively young and can be somewhat in flux. There are also subtle differences in what schools will call their programs (e.g. bioengineering vs. biomedical engineering vs. biomechanical engineering) and schools may skew slightly in favor of a particular engineering discipline based on the history of the department's conception. Most of the older biomedical engineering schools that I know of kind of sprouted off of electrical engineering, so much of their curriculums tend to lean towards work that benefit diagnostics technology (unless they have revamped something that I'm not aware of, which is very possible). I think Bioengineering curriculums are trying to be more focused towards cell and tissue systems from a more fundamental biological/chemical point of view.

Anyhow, my point is that you'll need to really look at what they are doing, and not just what they call it...

Do you have an idea of what you want to do in terms of a job? Research? Applications/medical devices?

At this moment i'm sort of leaning towards application/medical devices. Although if ever i do persure this major and see how i like it i might also do research. Right now i'm actually researching online regarding schools that offer this major, as well as information about it. Thanks again to all of you!!

I'm a media studies major which can be very interesting but you have to do a lot of crap too, such as studies about Dogma movies (which I absolutely dislike) and watching boring western movies that are like 50 years old and discuss them over and over and OVER again (over weeks or even months). All in all it can be very boring as you rarely do anything that's really useful or helping others or anything.

My minors are computer science and economics. Both cool even though there's quite a lot of maths.

i'm a junior in faculty of communication arts majoring film and photography. i'm try to figure out what can i do after graduate since it's hard to find a job on this area.

but it's very fun. i really like studying on it (not much study though

I recommend doing an internship. You could see what the job is actually like and it would help a lot in getting a job later on.

I'm a 2nd year chemistry major but I'm planning to switch over to Bio. Too lazy to do the chemistry major on top of prereqs to health schools. Prereqs end up covering most of the bio major so it works out nicely. Also, I want to pick up a minor in either management or history but my GPA isn't looking too competitive for a pharmacy school or another health school so..

Got a B.S. in biology...
Now in majoring in medicine--currently in the middle of my 3rd year of medical school...

My suggestion is:
If you want to make lots and manage lots of money... go into business/finance
If you like hands-on work with materials and enjoy knowing about why and how inanimate objects work.... go into engineering
If you like to have summers off and still have a fulfilling/challenging job of being the educational building block of society... be a teacher/professor.
If you like learning, discovering and creating new things and ideas and are not afraid of the unexplored frontiers go into something with a research emphasis.
If you like to be argumentative and always believe and debate that your opinion is right, maybe consider a career as a lawyer or politician.
If you are interested in being someone responsible for and who cares about the day-to-day healthy well-being of other people, then go into healthcare (lots of different career options here, so you can choose any that would fit your lifestyle and personality the best).

Two finals, and I'll be done (finally...) with my Humanities degree. I went from entomology (forensic...and should have stuck with) for one year, to criminology for one year, to fine art (graphic design?!? should have chosen illustration) for 3 years, to the major that would accept what I was left with. Oh yeah, my Japanese minor was sucked into my major...bummer. Oh well. I'll be done with school...until I stupidly enroll in graduate school (hopefully in the far future).
Yeah, obviously I have a lot of pride in my choice...ehheh...

But, yay! I'm graduating!!!

B.S. in Computer Science
M.S. in Education Technology
M.S. in Electrical Engineering

I also have dozens of information technology related certifications, including CCIE, MSCE, etc. As for money management, as Joe Walsh would say, "I have accountants who pay for it all."

As I already wrote in an earlier post my major is media studies and my minors are computer science and economics. I think I made a quite good choice as it combines the fun work (in my major) with the useful stuff (especially economics, but of course computer science too).
Also media science has a wide field of options. You can lay your main focus on journalistic studies, film studies, design, sound production and all kinds of other stuff. If you're not satisfied with the one you can change to another easily without starting all over again. It's really useful for me as I'm often a rather indecisive person.

ayyy, Darling, wake up!!!! It's not wat it seems. Lot of people jobless out there. Everyone want to be the Boss, then who will be your employee then

Nothing sure you will have good job and good salary. Believe me, my major is management and minor is marketing and I want to do my business as a consultant. But I sitll wonder what I can really do after graduate which is soon. What you are studying in school now is so vague.

Think of what you really really want to do, have inspiration and enthusiastic for what you are studying. It will keep you alive during the long years of studying. It's a pity because I want to follow art major...but you know...You not always get wat you want.

I know how you feel. I had the same situation when I want to follow art. Well, when you want to do something, it's good that you have the love for it. But don't forget your capability. Reality is tough !....that's all I can say ....

Major is Business Administration: Emphasis on Information and Decision Systems... Calculus class is holding me back.

Minor: Planning to at least minor in Japanese, will probably double major in it though since the major is just a few more classes

yerh, we're both in the same situation, worried that the course/ major we choose isnt gonna get us as far.
but hey! its good that you fought for wat you wanted and its good that ur parents allowed you to choose any major.
i think that if you really enjoy computer science then you should go for it, go kim!~

With a Computer Science major you can still be really successful! There's a lot of hot jobs out there. Maybe if you can get into information security or database administration. You can make a lot of money with a degree in Computer Science. Computers are always going to be around, so best of luck to you!
