:whistling:

This would probably be a better place to ask...

And it would also help if you point to what lists you are talking about.

You mean.... about us?
If so, we were talking about what drama we want to watch for this coming season.
What do you want to watch?
I liked Hana-Kimi so much, so I don't know if I can be really into a drama in the autumn season, but I want to watch Iryu2, utahime, Galileo.
And I will watch yukan-club too because many are talking about it. Hope some are good dramas! :D

http://www.tulips.tsukuba.ac.jp/misc/export/cat/hankan/
私も始め、歌手の話かと思ったら、全然違ってました^^;

See you :lol

Hi guys,

I posted this in the Travel forum, so I might as well also post it here as well:

After some years of saving up, I'm finally going to Japan! The reason for this post is that since I'm going there, I spent a lot already booking a flight for me and my girlfriend. We're wondering if there's any residents of Tokyo or near Tokyo that post on here that can house us or what not for a little while?

We're both clean, outgoing, love video games and love dramas (of course!). I know this kind of sounds random or weird at the moment, but this is just a back-up plan if my other friends there won't be able to.

In exchange, we can offer to pay to stay, have a language exchange deal (I personally want to work on my Japanese); we speak some Vietnamese and we're both fluent in English.

We're scheduled to leave on the 29th of Nov and arriving next day at 4, staying until the 17th of December. If you can house us for a portion of the trip, we'd be eternally grateful! I'd figure we'd try this forum because we can connect with peolpe here since we love dramas, and not a super stranger who we can't connect with at all, haha.

And don't worry, I'm with my gf, so we won't bother you or anything, and shows you I'm not a crazy random person :D We can go places if you are busy, just recommend us places ^^

Please let me know, thanks!

edit: I also have a Mixi, it's still under construction though ^^

i'm not japanese. i'm korean and spanish so i should learn those languages but the rest of my family speaks Japanese and knows the other two, and i have no interest in learning the other two languages.. and i'm near fluent... not exactly. there's still a lot of words i have to learn and the kanji is super hard. it's probably gonna take me forever to memorize it. i don't even know one hundred yet. i love japan! hopefully i'll be fluent. i go there every summer. i go to Nagoya but i really want to go to different places in Tokyo especailly Shibuya, harajuku, and akihabara!! the sushi there is the best. it's better than hawaii which is a very japanese type of state.. i just love all the food there. most of my clothes are from japan. i'm pretty much one of those people who adore everything about japan.is there anyone here who's fluent?? before i make this too long, i'm going to stop typing :lol jyaa-nyaa!! :P

Mina-san, yoroshiku! Watashi wa Hangarii-jin desu.

I am just beggining to learn Japanese. I am also a dorama/movie/anime/manga fan.

I would have a question: in a subtitle for a movie, there is the word "Kinkakuji". What does it mean? It is standing in the following line: "I'll sleep in the Kinkakuji. If anything..."

I found this one out :"Kinkakuji" (The Golden Pavilion) is a temple in Kyoto...

Arigatou!

Kinkakuji is a building built in 1398 in Kyoto. I don't think the translation is correct. Or maybe it refers to totally different building. What is the movie title?

The movie is Maadadayo, a Kurosawa Akira Movie from 1993. The Golden Pavilion is mentioned in it, to be similar to the outbuilding of the main character's house (as both has been built upon water). I believe that this line refers to the outbuilding...
Thanks, anyway!

I think this is all a question of what you want to do with Japanese. If you just want to watch a little anime or hear some Japanese person 'sugoi' you to death then a little spoken Japanese is fine, but once you get to intermediate or advanced conversations knowing the writing system is invaluable. I've taught a few friends and it's much easier because Japanese is full of homonyms.

Not learning to be polite is a handicap to yourself. Most people may not hold it against you if you are a foreigner, but my friend was once in a train station in Paris. There are stands where you can have your luggage stored while you are seeing the sites. There were two girls who were speaking English to the clerk who would just shrug his shoulders. Finally they left and my friend went up and spoke to him in French to try to help as they were walking away. It turned out the clerk understood English quite well, but chose not to help them because they assumed he spoke English. Of course, Japanese are very different, but not everyone you encounter will have the same understanding about you being a foreigner. Using the word for you in Japanese is quite curt, and if you use 'omae' you may find yourself in hot water.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that you can ignore the grammar either. It's important to know what the standard grammar is so you know when you are emphasizing something and when your aren't. It's like saying inflection isn't important in English and you can put the accent on any syllable you like. Resume, to continue doing something, and resume, your work history only differ by that much in speech.

Japanese and Chinese are probably two of the most writing dependent languages in the world. You will miss out on a great deal of the depth the language has to offer if you don't learn to write it.

I just realized this whole rant is based on the first page, not the last one of this thread. Sadly I will still force you all to suffer, since I'm not going to take the time to read through and see if I'm repeating what other people have said, since I think this can't be emphasized enough anyway.

Good work to all of you out there posting in kana and kanji! Romaji is the scourge of Japanese language. Keep up the good work.

Love as always. GL

Now that I read the last page I can comment.

Kinkakuji was actually burned down in 1950 and rebuilt. Sort of like the Namdaemun last month, some nut was unhappy with his life.

If you go to Kinkakuji now you probably will have to fight your way through the hundreds of amateur and professional photographers that swarm the grounds every time it's sunny or snowing, or whatever shot they are looking to get. Forget it if cherry blossoms are in bloom.

I totally agree with you.

Also, there are some grammatical constructions that may not fall under the category of polite language (keigo) but can still sound condescending when not used correctly. I've found that very few people will think less of you for making mistakes when using keigo, because Japanese people pretty much expect you to do that. But there are mistakes that they don`t expect foreigners to make and thus the person you talk to may not realize the misunderstanding and may even become upset.

Here are two examples that got me into trouble once in the past:
The first would be the difference between "[noun] ga ii" and "[noun] de ii" the first means something like "I'd like [noun]" or "I want [noun]" while the second means something along the lines of "I'm okay with [noun]" or "I will compromise on [noun]". You can surely imagine that you might have a lot of explaining to do if you mix them up.

And the second thing that struck me was that many foreigners in Japan, me included, use the construction "[something] shite hoshii?" when offering help to someone else. Unfortunately I've heard that it may sound quite condescending and that it is better to say "[something] shiyou ka?"

Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that studying your grammar and polite language helps you a lot.
