Well, I'm not too surprised at that since it was pretty much Mio's idea and they had just enough money to afford a room for the night.

Speaking of the hotel part, it was really funny when Mio switched on the TV and there was an adult channel showing a girl having sex with her 'brother'. It was made more hilarious by the fact that Mio and Kazuki were in a hotel room themselves, seemingly suggesting the possibility of incest. :lol

I'm not sure if they were real siblings since it's highly possible that it's just a incest themed AV. But still, that scene was hilarious.

BTW, did anyone notice the look on Mio's face when the people at the gokon were fooling around with Hiraoka Yuuta? She seems to be pretty pissed off. Signs of her falling in love? :D

Yeah, I would think so too.

Another one of my favourite scene in episode 2 is the part where Kazuki and his room mates started rapping. Kazuki and Abe did some turntables while Gekidan did an awesome robo dance. Then Kazuki muted Gekidan with an imaginary switch when he wanted to talk, while Gekidan continued with his dance. And when Kazuki was done speaking, he switched back on Gekidan's voice.

I really love this trio. :lol

I absolutely love this show. The pilot was my favourite of the season. I felt that the tension decreased in the second episode but it was still good. I love the cast so much. They have excellent chemistry with each other and their acting is so charismatic and engaging that it makes me want to continue to love it. But Inoue is my favourite. She gets the best lines and she delivers them beautifully. Favourites include:
When she was at the LA airport and she rang her brother. The whole convo was hilarious.

Mio: Onichan? Its me, Mio.
Kazu: Mio? Is it really Mio?
Mio: Its been a while
Kazu:A while? How many years has it been?
Mio: I forgot. You never answered any of the mails I sent you.
Kazu: I'm sorry. I'm bad with words.
Mio: So bad with words that you can't even write an email? What kind of person are you? [She literally says she doesn't understand a person who is bad with words that they can't write an email. But she says it softly so he can't really hear it]
Kazu: Hello?
Mio: Its nothing. It made me lonely Onichan.
Kazu: I'm sorry Mio. I've been worried about you though. How are you? How is your heart? Has it gotten better?
Mio:I was born with it, Its not something that is easily fixed, kinda like onichan's head. [She's implying that he's stupid here]
Kazu: Hello?
Mio: Its nothing. What about you Onichan?
Kazu: Me?
Mio: [Says something about his photography, I think its about whether he's become a pro yet]
Kazu: Not yet. I'm still studying.
Mio:Really?
Kazu: Really. Next time, I'm going to be doing a photo shoot. [talks about the shoot]
Mio: WOW! Then can I come over to stay with you? [For a vacation]
Kazu:Yeah. My room is very spacious and you can stay as long as you want.
Mio:Then 15.00. That is 3.00 pm. Come and pick me up at Narita airport.
Kazu:Eh?
Mio: I'm at La Airport just now. I'm just about to board the plane.
Kazu:Wait a minute. Mio.
Mio:Onichan.
Kazu: Yes.
Mio:I've always been wanting to see you. I'm really looking forward to it.
Kazu: I understand. I will be waiting.
Mio: Ok then. In 11 hrs and 20 minutes then. Bye.
Kazu: Bye. EH?!

Lol. It was awesome how she manipulated him.

And when they were having the photoshoot and his two friends move over to talk to her and make her up.

Abe: Woah. That dress makes you look so feminine.I see, I see. I'll give you a shining theme [or sth like that]
Other guy: You've got nice hair [not sure] lets let it down/
Mio: Amazing. You sound like real pros.
Abe: I've been on this path for 10 years.
Mio: Really? It feels like you two will make me very cute [?]
Other guy: Leave it to us. We'll make you very cute.
Mio:Ok. I really wanted someone more famous but I guess I'll have to deal with it.
[Abe drops the shoe box in utter surprise-> LOL]

Mio is the most awesome character. I hope she stays spoilt and conceited. So refreshing to see an evil girl with an incurable disease rather than one who is angelically good and you feel sorry for them because they are about to die.

I actually feel more sorry for her because you can tell them deep down she is a sweet person. She cares for her brother. But she acts that way because she wants to be remembered. And i love Kazu because he loves his sister so much. For her, he is willing to forgo his pride and beg his teacher to take him back. He's idiotic but he is a really nice older brother.

I really like the relationships that are portrayed in this series. Mio and her brother have great chemistry as siblings. The two flatmates, they all feel like good friends. The only relationship that is a bit stale atm is the one between Mio and Yuuki sensei. but i don't mind. Mio and Kazu are the best together and I love love love them together. Mio + Kazu + two flatmates is PURE GOLD.

And I love the themesong. Awesome.

I can't wait for episode 3! I hope the ratings rise up and up.

I watched the first two episodes without subs, relying on my seriously limited Japanese; I didn't understand much, but I love them. Yes, the story isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but I actually like it, even more by the fact that the actors are just superb. There is something about a brother trying to help find love for his sister who may not live after her operation and is a complete brat. The little flashbacks when they were children and the music just kinda make me go  The little party in episode 2 was hilarious--the dancing, the singing, and the little tidbit with the toilet paper outfit. The hotel room, the porno, and Mao-chan's singing :p--what more can I say?

Mao-chan's portrayal of Mio is so good--oh and I actually understood her English in Episode 2 when she called that girl a "stupid ****." :D Mio is so moody, but you can tell that she loves her brother a lot even though he's turned out to be quite a loser in life and then failed horribly when he tried to cover up that fact in Episode 1. I don't know if this was talked about in the drama but I think part of the reason why she doesn't want him giving up his love of photography is because she feels like he's throwing away his dream so easily, while she might not even live to be his age.

It's gonna be so interesting to see the romance develop between Mio and Akio in future episodes, since so far all Mio's done is hit him, push him, and give him these death glares while Akio just says "sumimasen." :D
Overall, I'm loving this drama. floydian made a comparison a few posts back, and I too have my seriously random comparison. Back in the HYD2 days (aahhhh), there was so much hype and excitement and all-day refreshing to see if the subs were up but at the same time, I would go watch Haikei and marvel over the story of old ways vs. new ways and the whole cast's acting, especially Nino's portrayal of the awkward Ippei. First Kiss kinda reminds me of that. Amidst all the hype and flash of HanaKimi and Yamada Taro (both of which I'm watching and coincidentally, one of which Nino is starring in), there 's First Kiss gently tugging at me. I enjoy all three dramas, but First Kiss might be my favorite this season. (Off topic: Am I the only one who wants to see Mao-chan and Nino in a drama together? They don't even have to play lovers, I just wanna see their acting together.)

Regarding Mio and Yuuki sensei
Their progression has been rather slow so far but I do find this pacing quite appropriate for now since they're just beginning to warm up to each other. I also quite like the fact that their relationship has been very subtle. Like the smile on Mio's face when Yuuki sensei finally managed to draw her blood, the smitten look on Yuuki when he saw Mio at the studio and the pissed off Mio when Yuuki got fooled around at the goukon.

From the preview of episode 3, it seems like Mio confessed to Yuuki sensei. But somehow, knowing Mio's character, I'm not believing it too much for now. :lol
@ClassicalPR: I can understand the comparison with Haikei. I really enjoyed Haikei, especially because of the characters, which was really the driving force of the show. The casting and acting were top notch as well. I'd definitely love to see Mao working with Nino in the future. Nino may be a Johnny but I do think that he has the acting chop to match Mao.

I'd also love to see Kimura Takuya working with Mao. Somehow, I can envision him as Mao's brother. Like the Kazuki role, which Ito Hideaki's been doing a really good job on.

Agreed. The relationships between the characters are very well portrayed. And yes, Mio's character is absolutely wonderful. I'm glad this is nothing like 1 Litre of Tears or anything weepy like that. It blends perfectly between humourous and bittersweet, I suppose. XD

Wow, the 2nd episode did pretty bad on ratings.

I'm sad cos this will sure affect Inoue Mao popularity. A gekku drama is SO dangerous. It can make you even more popular, like what happend with Ito Misaki in Kiken na Aneki and with Masami Nagasawa in Proposal Daisakusen, but it can break you big time like what happend with Nakama Yukie in Tokyo Wankei (saved thanks to Gokusen 2) and Ito Misaki with Sapuri and even Kamenashi Kazuya.

Yeah, I would think so too.

Another one of my favourite scene in episode 2 is the part where Kazuki and his room mates started rapping. Kazuki and Abe did some turntables while Gekidan did an awesome robo dance. oh yeah i love any scenes with the three of them. they were even doing beatboxing? <--is that what's it called? XD

i'm still giving mio and akio a chance! i caught some sparks there XD so like floydian said their progress might have been really slow but i think it's getting there.
i liked there small banter in the first episode. when akio went to the photoshoot. XD also how mio was actually glad that akio went to the house in the second episode. kazu was inviting him in and she actually waited to see if he would go into the house. it's just these small interactions but it's kinda sweet. although it wil be built up more XD
@Karawhite: so true... i love how she manipulates people to get what she wants.
i totally was surprised when she actually said stupid ****! XD her acting truly is convincing! for a while there i wanted to just shake her when she was disrupting the party, but i'm guessing it's because she's mad about what kazu said, maybe about his dreams in photography.
(Off topic: Am I the only one who wants to see Mao-chan and Nino in a drama together? They don't even have to play lovers, I just wanna see their acting together.)
ooohh never really thought about that. coz i haven't seen Nino's acting XD but everyone's been praising his acting skills!
From the preview of episode 3, it seems like Mio confessed to Yuuki sensei. But somehow, knowing Mio's character, I'm not believing it too much for now.
yeah i think i heard "suki" haha! but she gave him a bento? but yeah you never really know yet when it comes to mio
OOOOOOH. Me too. Takuya Kimura would be FTW for Mao's skills. And not to mention that it would be kinda awkward too because Mao admires SMAP, doesn't she? XPPP
ahaha! i would love to see them working together. she definitely has the talent!

majide!? it's that easy to break one's acting career? haha! but i don't know mao definitely has the talent. i don't think anyone would let that go to waste. she is a serious actress. and if her portrayal in this drama doesn't get her anymore roles or anything. i think the japan ent industry is really :| but it's still too soon to tell. we'll see next week.

but i don't think it's fair to put all the blame on mao though. i still choose to believe that some outside factors affected the ratings of the show. XD[/spoiler]

ahaha yeah i need to do that. but i'm speaking generally like most jdoramas have been featuring manga adaptations so maybe people got used to those kinds of stories. it's like a fantasy world. XD oh, i love those kind of stories too but when they suddenly encounter dramas such as first kiss they'd think it's boring (and don't appreciate it as much like we do) and i thought maybe the problem lies there. they got so used to the manga-fied world. XD

question about the drama
what did kazu do to make banba that angry at him?
it was actually :-( to see him begging banba to take him back

I listened to this three times (and I can listen to it on repeat forever :D) so I'm pretty sure I've got it all right.

some words I left unchanged (to Kanji) because they are usually written that way.

It should be pretty easy to translate. Try first, and then I'll check for you.

It can make you even more popular, like what happend with Ito Misaki in Kiken na Aneki and with Masami Nagasawa in Proposal Daisakusen, but it can break you big time like what happend with Nakama Yukie in Tokyo Wankei (saved thanks to Gokusen 2) and Ito Misaki with Sapuri and even Kamenashi Kazuya.[/quote

:-( I would hate for Mao's popularity to suffer. Her acting (and everyone else's really) is so believable. Let's hope that the next episode will gain higher ratings.

I think any drama would have affected her popularity. Her popularity was at an all time high, and probably could only go down. I think it is hard to tell how good of an actress she is because she has mainly been in Hana Yori Dango and nothing else major. No one really knows how well she can act a different character or not. I think 2 things are going against her:
1. She'll probably never get a perfect role in such a popular drama ever again. (I don't think many actors/actresses ever do)
2. She is kind of type cast now. Every drama she does, people will be thinking of her Hana Yori Dango character. She needs to find a way to break away from this. I think the Harry Potter kids will have the same troubles.

I see her having a good career, but never being as popular as she was during the Hana Yori Dango era.

Please keep in mind that there was a major earthquake on Monday where several died and hundreds injured not long before the airing of the drama. I'm sure that many tuned in to the news coverage and that impacted the ratings dramatically

Fair argument. There's a 50/50 chance this drama could affect Mao's popularity. It's probably true that her reign from HYD will never quite match up with her future roles. And although she may be type casted as "Makino" she is trying extremely hard to break away from that character. Besides First Kiss, her other projects are heading toward a more serious direction. (Kaidan, Hanaikusa)

I hope Mao's career will survive the obstacles the future will throw at her. She is too talented to fade away. Who knows? There might be another break-through role coming along.

Oh, and about the ratings.
yamapinku-rabu mentioned before that there was a big cup game and news coverage over the terrible north-east Japan earthquake[/b] on the day the second episode premiered. I'm expecting an average 15-16 % rating for the following episodes.

I highly doubt one bad rating will demolish Mao. The first season of Hana Yori Dango had a couple of rating drops (Due to other popular tv programming) but it still was immensely popular, leading up to a sequel.
Asian dramas:Yamada Taro Monogatari
American Dramas: Ugly Betty (can''''t wait for second season!), House, Gilmore Girl reruns

but i know she's also known for her role in kids' war in japan but if you're talking about gaining popularity even overseas then i can see that that's the problem. although i am quite sad that her popularity might not exceed that of her hana yori dango days but i'm sure she will never fade away. she's a great character actress. (as belleza once said) and i guess her agency is also shaping her up to be more of a serious actress than an idol.

although people may at first see her as that hana yori dango girl but i think as they watch her they will forget about that since for example in this drama, she totally immerses herself in the character and it's what the audience see. no signs of makino.

but all in all, i hope to see her in more projects. it will be a shame. she's one of the more talented, likeable and believable actresses out there.

and who knows? as remoted said, there could still be another breakthrough role for her.

i think it's what really affected the ratings at some point.

and i guess basing her career on this one episode really is a bit  haha we'll just have to see next week.

also, i would think for the most part scriptwriters would want actors that could truly portray the characters well and make it believable. and based on her performance here, there is no doubt she can do just that.

The football match and news coverage did affect ratings a little but the degree of drop attributed to it should be around 1-2%. Heyx3 and SmapxSmap which aired prior to and after First Kiss, and also clashing with football & news only registered 2% drop from previous week. The total tv-viewer ratings went close to 81% in total on Monday, highest over the last 3months compared to an average of 70-75% on a Monday night. The huge ratings jump registered by football & news were made by people who wouldn't have watched First Kiss anyway and didn't watch epi 1.

A 6.5% drop in ratings the largest epi 1 to 2 drop registered by a Gekku drama over the last decade. Understandably, the production team and cast will be under some pressure right now, probably to the extent of changing the intended flow of the drama. The intended framework according to the scriptwriter's notes was to continue the light-hearted tone, Mio being a brat for the first 6 epis then with a dramatic turnaround by epi 7. Perhaps they'll make Mio less bratty faster or something.

Personally i enjoyed ep 2 immensely but kinna figured out where the potential problem could lie. I'm not sure if anyone noticed but the framework & setting of epi 2 is very sitcom/ theatrical play based, quite different from the usual epi setting of a usual dorama where it's telling a story. For epi 2 of First Kiss, it felt as if i was watching a play. For most of us here who've watched our fair share of American sitcoms, it probably wouldn't be an issue but for an average Japanese viewer, it might be a turn off.

Since epi 2 is usually the lowest rated epi in 50% of japanese dramas. The worst could be over, but rather than looking at the ratings (cos you do have seasons where ratings are just generally low), think Fujitv would be looking at the relative rankings of dramas instead. If First Kiss doesn't secure at least a top 3 ratings this season, it's a failure. Hana Kimi appears to have stabilised around the 16-17% region... same goes for Yamada Taro 15-16% after 2 epis. It's be interesting to look at how Hotaru no Hikaru rates tonight since it had the 2nd higest opening of the season and generally feedback's been very good for this in 2ch and Mixi.

Even if First Kiss flops, don't think Mao chan will be that badly affected. Her acting isn't exactly faulted here (unlike Misaki Ito in Sapuri or Nakama Yukie who was demmed as too cold for a renai drama). The sucess of a drama is more than just about the cast, usually TV stations measure the star's ratings power by the opening epi cos it's usually the primary factor that attracts viewers to try out a drama. Decision to continue viewing after epi 1 will very much depend on the storyline & production standards. With the exception of Kimura Takuya, there's probably no one in the j ent industry who is able to generate good ratings with a lousy script.

i still believe that Mao is packaged as an actress, much like Shinohara Ryoko, so even if First Kiss becomes a flop, she can definitely bounce back with another project. :thumleft:

@kokitty

your long post made me curious enough to finally watch it.

I can understand why it got the rating it did. You don't know where this drama is going. You don't know WHY you just spent that 45 minutes watching this. There's no beginning, no ending, no "completeness" to each episode, and to the whole drama.

And... earthquakes in Niigata is nothing new. Sorry for sounding so cold, but they have earthquakes, landslides, floods, everthing year round. (Yeah, don't ever live there)
People felt the shake in Tokyo, and so they turned on the TV to see some info. But it's not like 9-11.
I can't believe Fuji would risk with Ageage... NHK got so much bashing because of it.
I also think they shouldn't have had Mio sing a random song when the theme song was playing. At least they could have used the same song... That really bothered me. Oh, and the Christmas theme too... of all seasons. Christmas?!
And lastly... I can't believe they'll overlook the time difference. That's just carelessness.

The episodes are weak and I agree that there isn't a "completeness" to each episode. It feels more like they cut it to fit within the limit of an episode. I would say that it is clear where the drama is going from the very start and how things will be set in motion by the interactions between the characters. For me it just feels more like a merry roundabout dance to the end. Interesting but not engrossing.

Well for me, I don't really feel that the episodes lack "completeness". I do think that the story flows so far and there's like a little conclusion at the end of each episode that's carried on to the next episode.
Like in the first episode, when Kazuki decided that he wants to help Mio find a boyfriend, this story is continued in the next episode, when he sets up a goukon for her. However, he soon realises that love shouldn't be forced and he doesn't really understand Mio's feelings. He also realises another thing he could do for Mio (and himself) and that was to continue with his dreams of being a photographer.

So judging from the end of the second episode, the third episode is likely to go in 2 directions; Kazuki starting to understand Mio's feelings a little more and letting love takes its own course, and Kazuki attempting to redeem himself from Banba.

The latter is very distinct Inoue Yumiko style. In Good Luck!! and Engine, we've also seen two male leads who had encountered problems when realising their dreams. However, both of them were encouraged and inspired by the female lead (GL) and kids (Engine) and were able to realise their true passion for their dreams and thus, not giving them up. For First Kiss, it's clear that the catalyst for Kazuki is Mio.

With regards to what kokitty mentioned, I really hope that the production team would be able to stick to the original plan for the show. I'd really hate to see the show turning dramatic too quickly and Mio's character taking a huge turn too suddenly. :-(

i agree. i don't want it compromising the flow of the drama. sometimes when they want to cater to the exact needs of the audience, they tend to forget the quality of the script. i hope the changes they decide to do won't be anything drastic. and i don't want it to turn too dramatic. i enjoy the light comedy they have going on here.

I think the most entertaining and refreshing part of the script is the fact that Mio is a brat and that the focus is on her relationship with her brother. If the low ratings force them to change that and focus on a love relationship between a dying girl and a doctor, I will be screaming bloody murder. Its nice to have script that doesn't focus on romantic love. Brother and sister relationships are equally entertaining (even more so). I like how Mio is Kazu's catalyst.

I seriously want Mio to continue to be a brat for as long as possible.
I mean, at the beginning of episode one, when she was going for an operation, she was still strong spirited and had the air of a spoilt brat. and this is supposedly two months after she goes to japan. So no way can they change her character. It would ruin everything.
I don't think inoue mao's popularity will be affected. I mean Masami's sailorfuku to kikanjuu was a serious flop and she was cast still in proposal which brought in high ratings [I fail to understand why cos eventually I just gave up on it.]

Plus people, remember that there will be a HYD movie out in 2008. Inoue Mao's Tsukushi will be back and she will again ride the popularity wave. I like her mio better than tsukushi anyway. Mio is so much more in your face than Tsukushi and I think Mao has put a lot more effort into this character, or it feels like she has to work harder to make this character work.
I wonder where the story will go in general. Do you think they are planning to focus on Kazu becoming accomplished and Mio and Yuuki sensei falling in love?

i don't want them totally forgetting the kazu and mio bro-sis angle. it's what i love about this drama. their relationship! they're too cute! makes you want to have a brother like that XD well, not the lost aspect of his character though hehe... but i would really like to see some mio-akio sweet moments XD

i know what you mean. mio being a brat is really what's different from all the usual female leads. i like how she makes you want to hate her and love her at the same time. XD

is the hyd movie confirmed?? :O
i think it will probably head towards that direction. mio and kazu both growing and learning from each other. i think kazu has already been affected by mio. but it will take a little more time to touch mio since she's already affected by the fact that she might just die... and mio and akio rabu-rabu? why not? XD

@ yamapinku-rabu : I'm pretty sure its confirmed. People were screaming in joy some while back and I think that on Jun's work schedule, he actually has HYD movie in 2008 as an item. So if jun is back, how can they not have mao? It would be against everything anything ever stood for if a different actress took it up. No matter how talented she was, my eternal bias would forbid me from ever saying a nice thing about her. It would be "she's not better than mao. only mao is tsukushi. mao mao mao." :D.

I like the lost aspect of Kazu's character. He's lost, but he's very very sweet to Mio. And he's trying to overcome all his character flaws for her. Its very cute.

:D yeah kazu's really sweet to mio. mio too to kazu. in her own way XD that's why they're so cute! i love the opening song! with them holding the polaroid camera!

Oh well, my opinions are somewhat like loydian's. I'm not as harsh as to call this episode lacking in completeness. Least on the Kazu's side, he managed to get on a closer level with Mio's doctor and is trying to embark on photography once again. Kazu did "accomplish something" at the end of the epi. The only thing was that they probably wasted too much time on the less important stuff esp the go-con bit which was a fun watch in itself but didn't do much for the general flow of the story to warrant the amt of time spent on this for this epi.

I guess we're trying to conjure possible reasons for the huge ratings drop. The fact that we're even interested in discussing it probably means the general positives of this drama still outweighs the flaws. Honestly i never liked Inoue Yumiko's recent works aka Good Luck, Pride, 14 sai Haha. Only thing i liked from her was Shiroi kyoto but that was an adaptation so you can't really screw it up badly anyway. Having said that i was rooting for First Kiss to do well cos it's an original script, don't want all 3 top ranked ratings this season to be all manga adaptions (though i must admit that those 3 have been fun gulity pleasure viewing so far). Would prefer to see some variety in the kind of dramas conjured up by the various stations every season, having 80% of dramas being manga adaptations this season seems bad, dread to experience a future season where everything is adapted from shoujo mangas.

The thing I like about Inoue Yumiko is the way she creates each distinct character and links them together, creating relationships that are very enjoyable to watch. Hence, most of her shows are pretty 'human' in nature. I also admire her ability to create tailor-made characters for specific actors/actress, eg. Kimura in Good Luck!! and Engine, Shida Mirai in 14 Sai no Haha and now, Inoue Mao in First Kiss. You just couldn't imagine more suitable actor/actress to potray these characters.

I'm not a huge fan of manga adaptions as well since most of them try to sell the drama by using idols, so I'm definitely rooting for First Kiss to do well this season.

I love Good luck and Engine. They are my two favourite Kimura takuya series. But Good luck pretty much tops my list in most things. I love all the characters. I love the relationships. Floydian is right, the relationships are very skillfully created and she has a talent for creating characters that are perfect for her cast.

Speaking of which, I want more Mio and the photography teacher interaction. The Mao and Naoto [this guy is so good at being mean and he's so funny] scene in the first episode was so awesome. I want more. MORE!!!!!

That entire scene was cool. But my favourite has to be:
when mio purposely wrecked the relationship between some random couple. I was laughing so hard when she was running away and the guy was trying to go after her and she was saying 'its useless no whatever he says'. She so evil, but i love her.

Another cute moment is at the beginning when she's telling the doctor how useless her brother is and she tells Mio to breathe in, hold her breathe and breath out and Mio does all that and speaks at the same time. Kudos to Inoue Mao for pulling that off spectacularly.
I like how mio is also a catalyst to mend the relationship between the trio, in a sense. I mean, Ichiru has probably kept all his unhappiness about them freeloading off him for a very long time. Without Mios appearance, it might never have blown up. Now that its up in the air and at its very worst, it can only get better. This way there will be nothing between the three once this problem is solved.

mao is such a cute brat haha! she is evil. i mean the couple did nothing wrong. she just felt like making trouble for them. XD ahhh just love her acting in this drama!

ooohh... you're right mio is pretty much the catalyst for almost everyone. since with akio i'm guessing he'll change in some ways too. XD and of course, everyone she encounters does something for her too!

i feel so bad for ichiru he's such a good guy XD but i remember in the preview for the 3rd episode, there's a scene where mio seems to be wiping his mouth or something.
i've never seen any inoue yumiko dramas. but i always hear they were good!

I second this!! I love book/short stories adaptations better. Most of my fav dramas were book to drama adapts etc IWGP.

@floydian
My general dislike for Inoue Yumiko works these days is admittingly a little on the irrational level, something to do with her making me fall big time with Kimura Takuya in Gift, Good Luck was allright and destroying whether little affection i had left for him in Engine. I can't even recall what i hated so much abt Kimura in Engine but the bad taste in Engine led me to dislike Good Luck when i tried rewatching it again.

Do believe that a good story is worth re-telling so i've got nothing against manga adaptations in general nor the over use of young idols which comes along with it. Having said that, it's the trend of over-relying on manga adaptations that has gotten me uncomfortable. It's healthier for the industry to have a good mix of genres and sources every season.

Back to First Kiss, i'm randomly reading through some of the intial casting gossips. Word has it that they had difficulty casting Kazu's character, approached a couple 27-30yr old popular actors, the production team tried convincing this certain Johnny's actor for the longest time, Hideaki Ito himself took the role only after rejecting it once initially. Kazu seems to be a very endearing character so far, fairly challenging for an actor to enact the interactions with the sister, wondered what is so wrong with it that led to the various rejections from actors.

Kazu seems to be a very endearing character so far, fairly challenging for an actor to enact the interactions with the sister, wondered what is so wrong with it that led to the various rejections from actors.
eeeehhh? :O rejected? :O wonder what IS so wrong! wonder who that johnny is?

@kokitty
I'm actually enjoying a couple of manga adaptions this season like Hotaru no Hikari and Juken no Kamisama so yeah, I do agree with you that some of them are worth watching.

Wow, that's pretty interesting news there. Any word on who exactly is this Johnny? Judging from the age, it's most probably someone from SMAP? If so, I can only imagine Kimura Takuya pulling off that role... well, just maybe Katori Shingo as well. The only reason I can think of, with regards to the rejection was most probably the fact that the Kazu character seems to be too much of a loser on the surface. But then again, we all still love him, don't we? :D

Before the drama aired, I was actually a little skeptical when I read that Hideaki Ito got casted in that role but kudos to him for doing an excellent job so far.

....well, I have few ideas.

Tachi-san, who has played so many detective roles in the past and established himself as the "sunglasses-cool" character is now bouncing around acting like a high school student. He keep saying over and over how, if he does a bad job here, his acting career is over. Yet he is doing a great job because he manage to get people to LAUGH with his new field of acting.

I think whenever actors challenge themselves with a new field, it's gets a little dangerous.

And seeing Pug and Chihuahua... I think their acting career has basically ended. I stare at the screen like :blink

@floydian
there is no definitive agreement on who the Johnny's actor is on that thread. Judging from the age profile and reason cited for the unsucessful attempt on the gossip thread (this actor's agency has rejected other proposals from various tv stations flat out too since beginning of the year, possibly due to health issues). The SMAP guys are possible names, personally i don't think it's Kimura cos he's too big a name to take second billing, Shingo... haven't heard of him being sick though. It could also be people like Mabo, Nagase (who was indeed sick for a while), Okada etc

I find Kazu absolutely endearing! He's a bit of a loser but i'm sure he'll turn out all right in the end. Hideaki Ito is a capable actor to be honest, personally i'll rate him better than the SMAP guys in acting (okay, runs away from SMAP fangirls).

Juken no Kamisama is an original story drama though. Hotaru no Hikaru does look very good if the momentum of epi 1 is maintained, but least they're not going towards the very animated crazy route aka the Hana Kimi + Yamada taro. Nothing against being all crazy + hilarious though, i had fun watching Hana Kimi just for the sake of getting cheap laughs.

@lsqB
LOL!! My sentiments exactly! I'm seeing both actors in whole new light after the Pug and Chihuahua act, just couldn't believe my eyes when they actually dared to do that again in epi 2.

aww man, im gone one day and whoa! the thread explodes, its almost catching up with Inoue Mao's thread, well i really liked Ep. 02, it made me laugh so hard!

i really liked the scene in which Ikki/Kazu kneeled down so Mio could get on his back and Mao just walked around him and then Ikki did it again and this time it seemed Mio would get on but she just shoved him to the ground, AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!

there were so many parts that i liked like the rapping/beatboxing part, the toilet paper part, the party part, the 'stupid ****' part, the Ikki chasing the doctor and doctor hitting Ikki with her bag part, the porno part, the ruining the couple part, karaoke part, Mio singing on the bed part, the pizza part! so many funny scenes!!!!!!!!!!!

i have a question when Mio went for her check up in the beginning when she was already leaving she came back real quick and told the old man something about Akio, can someone tell me what she said... i bet it was something really humiliating!!!!!!!!!!!! the face that Akio made is just engraved in my mind!!!

looking forward to next episode there seem to be lots of things happening, looks like Ikki is getting another chance at photography, and Mio is getting hooked up with another guy! and what! Mio telling Akio that she likes him?!!! whoa tune in to find out!

yeah i feel so bad for Ichiru, there's this one scene in which he throws out the trash and you can just sense his frustration, they should have seen it coming...

did anyone notice that big guy that came out in the first episode that Mio went to and thought it was her brother, yeah well that guy did any of you notice him in the second part when Ikki went to the store??? he even patted him on the back!!!!!

yousei, youre so mean! i actually thougth that you were done with episode 01... i like your gif, umm what program do you use for gifs?

@kokitty: I'm actually thinking that it could be Nagase as well. But he's sort of being type casted as a Yakuza so it'd be kinda weird seeing him being bullied around for once. Personally, I do quite enjoy SMAP's acting, eg. Nakai in Suna no Utsuwa, Tsuyoshi in the Boku series, Kimura in Sora. They're definitely the best bunch of actors in Johnny for me.

I'm not enjoying Hana Kimi and Yamada Taro very much since they're just way too crazy for my liking. It doesn't help that I don't feel much for the characters as well. Guess I got mixed up with Juken no Kamisama being a manga adaption. The characters are very endearing to watch for sure!

Mio was telling the man to be careful about getting a jab from Akio since he might end up with a swollen arm.

Yup, I noticed the fat boy when I was rewatching that episode. I wonder if he'll continue to appear in random episodes, like the marathon runner in Pro Dai? :D
BTW, I'm just wondering if anyone knows the reactions in 2ch for the second episode? Maybe we'll have a better idea as to why the ratings dropped so drastically.

Definitely not SMAP, because even the youngest smap member is in the mid 30's. V6 and Arashi fall more into the age range 27-30.
edit: yeah, just saw the post theorizing, he's probably most likely

Yeah, I kinda realised that as well, auroragb. But still, I would have chosen to believe that they had originally chosen a SMAP member, as opposed to a member from V6 or Arashi. Honestly, I just don't see anyone from the two groups capable of filling in the role of Kazu.

The youngest member of Arashi is 23 years old (and he just had a drama with Mao), but I can't picture any of them for the role of Kazu just because they all look too young for it. :lol I love them and their goofiness but none of them would have been right.

When kokitty said there had been a Johnny considered, I thought of Nagase?

searching around a couple of keywords... I read that Nishikido Ryo was suppose to be in one of the drama this season, but he turned it down. Don't know if that has anything to do with this though.
