Ok, some picutrus of my trip in 2000.
I just love the mountains in Japan, this was at lake hakone

Of course getting up the mountain can be fun, both sides are the same road, the view is from the bus as it went around the corner.

A nice waterfall.

I've been to Mt. Fuji 3 times, I've had beautiful weather all through my trips except the days on each trip I went to the mountain. This is the best view I ever had of it, one morning at about 6 am.

I went at the hight of the school trip season so there were school kids every where.
These kids were standing on one side of the road, while we, a group of westerners were stand on the other. They took out picture, so I took theirs. They then came up to me and talked with me and had me sign their school project folder, and gave me some origami cranes.

Some Schoolgirls tying fortunes to a tree at a shrine.

Some girls burning incense at a temple, I think the one in back is suspicious of me.

At least I wasn't mobbed like I was here, I walked past the kids in the first picture holding my camera, and the girls just posed on their own, so I took their picture, and then chaos ensued.

The stone walls of Osaka castle, I was really drawn to how these walls looked, so I have many pictures of stone blocks.

And the castle itself.

Look a Japanese McDonalds. Some of the people on the tour ate in here, so I came in and was standing at the table talking to them, when a girl from behind the counter came over and brought me a chair. Now that's service. Actually I have ate at McDonalds in Japan to see what it's like, and some of thier fair is quiet good. Especially the ginger chicken sandwich, but I still prefer MosBurger.

While they were in McDonalds, I ate here. Takoyaki for the win. This was in Osaka.

The gardens at the kyoto imperial palace were very beautiful.

The Shinkansen was really a fun ride, amazing how when you would meet another one how fast they went by each other.

And lastly, the view outside my hotel window in Tokyo, thankfully they turned out the lights later in the night.

Here's some from Maiko, at the Akashi Kaikyo Ohashi. We go to Kobe a couple times a year. The middle one I took from Goshikiyama next to wife's parent's house. The last one taken from the bridge promenade.

I stayed in Tokyo for two weeks, and just came back a couple weeks ago. I had a blast! I took over 800 pictures, so rather than weeding out the good and bad ones, you can just check out my entire album. Let me know what you think:

Wattstax, no, i didn't see any construction going on while i was in Japan. Sorry! Tokyo DisneySea is not worth going but i didn't have a choice at that time. My trip in Tokyo clashes with the long holiday in Japan. At 9am, there were like more than a 1000 ppl queuing up to purchase Tokyo Disneyland entrance ticket.Wattstax wrote:@ superfatpig: I love those Signs. Have you pictures of the construction work signs? I forgot to shoot them
The bicycle is also nice. But that's the kind of picture I wouldn't dare to take. I'm afraid of people that get angry.
jellybean: the 'one piece' stuff was inside of the fujitv bldg. i think it was sankai (3rd flr). there were some ainori stuff, chibi marukochan and hey hey hey music champ. pretty cool place to visit.jellybean wrote:wow jholic - where were those places with the one piece stands and that crazy R&R stage?
the R&R stage was outside of the fujitv bldg. apparently, it looks like a mini fair. several booths for the various television shows. stages with performances, ainori van, etc. i thought it was a one-time thing, but apparently, it's always there?!?!

Took these pics while I was in Japan for job interviews this Oct.-Nov., which explains why I was by myself most of the time.

Really nice pics Very similar to the ones I took when I went in the summer, especially the Osaka ones. So what's your favorite city so far? Mines maybe Osaka, maybe more than Tokyo. I'll be going again this February so I'll be sure so visit many more cities and take many more pics. The one city I really want to visit is Yokohama, and more Kyoto..tUrtleAE86 wrote:Took these pics while I was in Japan for job interviews this Oct.-Nov., which explains why I was by myself most of the time.

So what were you applying for? Have they told you if you've gotten the job or anything yet?
Hopefully it went well.
Kimonos and Plastic Food - A fine combination
Here are a couple of pics I took in Japan. The pic of the girl in the kimono is from a Temple in Kyoto. It was taken during the yearly girl's day festival. The pic of the plastic food is from a shop in Kappabashi, Tokyo near Asakusa temple. Enjoy If you like the pics and you want the high resolution version PM me or post to this thread. Enjoy

Thanks! I got the job, so I'll be working in Yokkaichi (Mie-ken) starting in March or so, which is 30 mins away from Nagoya. And, I'll be a field service engineer for a company that designs semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Congratulations on your job That's really great news! I am also in the IT field and really want to work there. But I have a few questions though. I'm a little scared I might not get a job there. Did you start working for a company here, in your case Canada, then are going to transfer to Japan? Or did you just apply directly to Japan? Any language barriers or requirements? Is it temporary? Sorry for the questions but I'm just curious as to how you accomplished this. Thanks again.

Actually, I got the job through a job fair ("Career Forum") that I went to in Los Angeles during September. These job fairs are for English/Japanese bilinguals who are completing or have completed a university degree. Some companies have intern positions, might be worth looking into.albertoavena wrote: I'm a little scared I might not get a job there. Here's the website:
http://www.careerforum.net/
These Career Forums are pretty aggressive. You apply online from around a month in advance, and initial screening tends to happen before the event. Most companies set up interviews beforehand, so that you can have 2nd/3rd round interviews if time allows. But, it's still okay to approach a company cold, and you still should be able to get an interview.
They hold three job fairs in the US each year:
- February: NYC (~30 companies)
September: Los Angeles (~40 companies, technical positions only)
October: Boston (~170 companies)
No matter what you do, there will ALWAYS be a language barrier. But, dealing with it confidently is the key to succeeding. I learned this the hard way.
It's possible to get a job for a few years, or to get one permanently. Traditional Japanese companies (i.e. Fujitsu, Toshiba) see their employees as long-term investments. And, if you leave in a few years, they feel that they are losing their return on investment, so they are less inclined to hire people knowing that they are only temporary.
But, most non-Japanese companies with branches in Japan are a bit more flexible. There are a substantial number at the Career Forums. That said, still apply to the traditional Japanese companies, because there is a lot that you can learn from the interviews.

Wow, what a post! Thanks a lot. So you got your job through a job fair? That's actually the way I want to try to get a job, well, when I graduate. I think I'll maybe just apply after I graduate instead of applying for the intern positions. That's actually a really helpful site, I've been trying to find something like this for a while. I like the fact that it's aimed towards bilinguals.
But approaching a company cold is a good idea too. I'll try both. I just really want to wait until I get my bachelors degree since I hear that Japanese companies are only taking 4+ years of schooling. I could be wrong though. Also, I hear that the Japanese job market doesn't really deal with foreign applicants that well. A very closed market. Again, I could be wrong. That's a lot of Japanese technical companies. I wonder if the job fairs that my school offer have any have that kind of support from Japanese companies..
I understand about the language requirements. So having a resume in English and Japanese is pretty much a must. I like the way they have practice interviews. I really want to try to go for this but I have to study Japanese really hard in order to do so. Like you said, I have to deal with it confidently. So since your going to Japan to work until March, are you working for them now from Canada or are you working for someone else?
As for the temporary situation, I'm actually relieved that they prefer a more permanent person. I was a little afraid that it might be just that, temporary. Also, on a side note, Fujitsu is the company I really want to work for, but we'll see how that goes. I wonder if they help outwith such things and permanent residency and eventually naturalization. I'd like to do that eventually. I apply to a traditional Japanese company and hopefully everything will turn out have. Again though, I still have like 2.5 years until I graduate so I have plenty of time to iron out some details.
Thanks again

HOLY CRAP...u guys are so damb lucky man...my only wish is to visit JAPAN, i seriously wanna go, so badly, but no way in hell would my father who doesn't even let me go to the store with my best friend, ever let me visit Japan, by myself, my father wants to go but he says we need more money since it very expensive.....i get really mad when people say, "why do u wanna go to Japan", or do u know that many people say Japan is baised and racisit...." i hate hearing that ****..i want to punch someone when they say it, i always say, "SO WHAT! who gives a ****....Japan is not the only country in the world who's baised and racisist, countries like ours (U.S) and European countries are the same, even worse....!" I just hate it when people make assumptions sbout a place they never visited.....I don't care if Japan is baised, i still want to go, because i can tell it's an aswome place and seems very safe and has nice people....I love a country where u can walk around and feel safe without thinking, OMG is someone following me, or beeing so scared to walk somewhere alone at night...and i know Japan is not a perfect place and has some violence, but i know that the violence is never compared to the violence in U.S and Europe.......I live in the U.S i know what i am talking about, at night i get freaked out to even go outside, and my father is always checking if the windows and doors are compeletly shut and locked and he even in the middle of the night looks out the windows, to see if anything seems weird or suspicious. last week cops in the middle of the night caught a van will criminals in our parking lot...so for once i wanna travel to a place were this kind of stuff is not a normal daily occurance...if get wut i mean...

You ridicule others about making assumptions about countries or places they have never been to, however you do the exact same thing in your post.
While statistically Japan may have low levels of crime(There are reasons why a lot of crime is not reported), such violence exists in all countries and such security checks similar to the one your father does, are done by many families in Japan as well.
Human nature is human nature, and location does not change that.
Besides the thought of Japan being an dreamy Anime castle in the sky, many people tend to believe that there is nothing wrong with the country, but nothing is flawless..
Please try to stay low on the hypocrisy.

Ah, the Golden thingamy, we didn't go there. Our Goodwill Guide said that it and the Silver one were a favourite with the furriners, so we went to the ones which had more signifiance to the locals. We went to a really really long wooden temple (Sanjusan) and a large one with masses of wooden supports (Kiyomizudera). They were certainly alot less shiny!
In just over 3 weeks I took 1,700 photos which didn't get culled and my brother 2,700, though that was a bit excessive. Still, I've learned that if in doubt take a photo, or else you'll regret it and won't be able to do anything about it.

Sorry, if you misuderstood me....I never said or believe that Japan is perfect and I know it's not, however i know it is safer than the U.S. Every country has it's flaws and Japan is like any other country, they have there good and bad, however i like Japan, so I would like to visit. I never made assumptions about everyone, but mostly everyone whom i have talked with have said the same thing about Japan being biased, adn I am just saying every where is baised. I would be a hypracrit, if i said Every country is biased, but not Japan, also I never said Japan is a "dreamy anime castle in the sky"...LOL my first time hearing that phrase. The reality is everywhere has crime, however some countries have lower crime rate than others and i was just trying to say that Japan is one of those countries. I pretty sure u know Japan has a lower crime rate compared to the U.S. And mostly everyone else does too. I am not being an hypocrit. I am just stating my opinion. I know what violence is...I come from a country where violence is every day life.....SO sorry that u believe i am being an hyprocrit....
