Of this CURRENT SEASON, what dramas are you watchin'??

Post by lordViN » May 6th, '07, 05:46

simple question, stay on topic, discuss and recommend JDramas of this current season. :thumleft:

I'am Currently watching:

Proposal Daisakusen
LIAR GAME
and Jodan ja nai!

For me Proposal Daisakusen is the most appealing drama of this season an that is mainly because yamapi and Nagasawa Masami (I loved them in Dragon Zakura  ), I still have to watch Bambino!, Hanayome to Papa and others for a more complete view but for now it is like this.

Bambino and Hotelier are my two favourites this season.

And I'm also watching Proposal Daisakusen and Hanayome to Papa. Also Liar Game, but I have not started on any episode of it yet. Have to give that tokku tanaka 3 go another chance too. apparently it gets better in episode 3.. I got turned off by the 1st episode.. And I believe that's it so far... any more shows along with the american dramas I'm currently watching and I'm going nuts.

Watashitachi no KyouKashou - dark but so good, my fav. so far this season. The subs are top-notch too.
Proposal Daisakusen - light-hearted and very interesting.
Liar Game - the 3rd episode really became a lot more exciting than the preceding two.

It really gets a lot better at end of the episode 2 and at the episode 3 it really becomes very interesting and exciting. I'm waiting anxious for the next episode.

Watashitachi no KyouKashou - I am in love with this series! Dark and full of mystery! The subbers are doing afantastic job with it as well!

Bambino! - I love Jun Matsumoto so I HAD to watch this!!! I really like it so far and I look forward to the rest of it!

(No other shows are really grabbing my attention based on the premises but I will probably catch up with them later when I am bored and I see the final reviews from people here on the board. )

watching all the new jdramas this season except for that aya ueta's or whatever her name is drama. Koki's new drama has to be my favoritiest one. Least favorite is Proposal Daisakusen even though Pi is my favorite....

aishoni2 - Watashitachi no KyouKashou is a pretty good dark drama. Kind of suspenseful too, I recommend watching it.

In my opinion the best series thusfar:

Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Go - excellent cast. Surprisingly good performance by Koki who plays a character that is patheticly inept, annoyingly **** but kind at heart with a good moral compass. You can't help but cheer for him (unlike Jun's portrayal in Bambino).
The writers clearly took the time to create interesting supporting characters. e.g. Kei (Tsukamoto) who has one mother (duh) but 5 potential fathers and remains a virgin who will only date women who are serious about marriage and share his monogamous ideology. Tsukamoto and Akiyama do an excellent job portraying "tetsus". Akiyama is clearly a comedic genius. The chemistry (or intentional lack thereof) between Koki and Chiaki is absolutely hilarious. Chiaki's reactions to Koki's antics (esp phone calls) had me rolling on the floor with stomach cramps. The cinematography and production is top notch (reminds me of Nobuta, Gal Circle) and the OP kicks serious ass. And oh yeah, Kato Rosa and Kuriyama Chiaki are both fine as hell.

Proposal Daisakusen - if the Butterfly Effect were a romantic comedy....
The timeslip plot isn't exactly revolutionary but to me ithis version is different enough to seem refreshingly original. The characters aren't nearly as interesting as in Tanaka 3 but are likeable. Ken (YamaPi) despite his initial boneheadedness always manages to surprise you with his ingenuity in the end. Was never a huge fan of Nagasawa (Sailor Fuku was dreadful) but she is quite a good actress and her infectious charm is beginning to grow on me. Eikura Nana did such an awesome job in Dance Drill but her character in Proposal is rather boring. Hopefully her character will evolve as the series progresses. The music/soundtrack is stellar and i have absolutely no complaints.
This is definitely one of the best dramas this season. As entertaining as Tokkyu Tanaka but not as strong when you analyze depth of character and quality of acting.

Hanyome to Papa - Ishihara Satomi basically plays the same bumbling character she played in H2. She tends to overact but she is sooooooo damn cute (what am I saying, she's freaking HOT) that you can't help but like her. Especially since she has such a ridiculously overprotective father. Tokito Saburo does an award-nomination worthy comedic portrayal as Satomi's dad ("Boku wa kimi no otousan janai !) Taguchi Junnosuke tries to take the title of most effeminate looking JE male lead from Kamenashi Kazuya but overall i am quite impressed by the way he portrays his character in this series. A romantic comedy i don't mind taking the time to download.

Liar Game - Haven't read the manga. The plot is very intriguing. Didn't realize how exceptionally BAD Toda Erika is at acting until now. (Loved her in Nobuta but it's been all downhill since then. Zero emotional range but pretty to look at.) Entertaining b/c of the story. With a better cast it could have been much better. Still worth dowloading.

Watashitachi no Kyokasho - Great drama with an excellent cast though Itoh Atsushi tends to overact when portraying scenes of frustration. Takes an "Afterschool special" topic (school bullying) but executes the storytelling well. Not as controversial as Shida Mirai 's 14 Sai no Haha but still socially germane. Just about to watch episode 4 raw when I finish this post.

Worst drama so far: Bambino.
Not terribly bad, but completely lacking originality using every cliche in the Jdrama book.
Jun was great in Kimi wa Petto and HYD but the level of overacting in Bambino is utterly ridiculous. Very weak acting by such a potentially strong cast most likely due to the fact the characters are so bland and uninspiring. I can see how this show could garner high ratings/reviews b/c of all the teenaged girls that blindly worship anything that Jun (or any Johnny's Jr) does but COME ON?!!! This "drama" has a cookie-cutter underdog plot with no intersting "twists" or compelling displays of acting ability to elevate it from being completely generic. Not worth 5 Kb of space on my hard drive.

I've only watched 1st half of episode one of sexy Voice. Had a lukewarm appraisal of what i saw. Is it worth watching? What else is a surprise quality show that is under the radar so far?

Thanks, NHK9.
Actually, I just finished watching Watashitachi ep 04. Miho Kanno does an admirable job but it's hard to take this drama seriously. One thing i noticed is how they always focus in on a main character's emotive facial expression and segue with the overdramatic theme song like they did in Boku no Aruku Michi. Pretty cheesy but at least Boku no Aruku Michi had an awesome story. Watashitachi no Kyokasho is starting to get pretty ridiculous plotwise and with its side-stories.

But yeah, i highly recommend Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Go if you haven't watched it yet. It's really well-written a la Kekkon Dekinai Otoko but geared towards a younger crowd. The introductory 1st half of episode one might seem boring at first (and Koki overly irritating) but watch at least the 1st 2 episodes b4 making a final judgement. I also like how it exposes aspects of Japanese culture that are so overtly and distinctly peculiar to Nihon.
It gives a picture of how alien japanese life can be (well at least in Tokyo).

doubledown11 wrote:In my opinion the best series thusfar:

Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Go - excellent cast. Surprisingly good performance by Koki who plays a character that is patheticly inept, annoyingly **** but kind at heart with a good moral compass.

Proposal Daisakusen - if the Butterfly Effect were a romantic comedy....

Hanyome to Papa - Ishihara Satomi basically plays the same bumbling character she played in H2.

Liar Game - Haven't read the manga. The plot is very intriguing. Didn't realize how exceptionally BAD Toda Erika is at acting until now.

Watashitachi no Kyokasho - Great drama with an excellent cast though Itoh Atsushi tends to overact when portraying scenes of frustration.
Worst drama so far: Bambino.
Not terribly bad, but completely lacking originality using every cliche in the Jdrama book.

I've only watched 1st half of episode one of sexy Voice. Had a lukewarm appraisal of what i saw. Is it worth watching? What else is a surprise quality show that is under the radar so far?
I have resumed it, gome!! :P

posts like this are the purpose of this thread, is people opinions and popularity of the series what people are seeking, specially since there are a lot of series per season and so few disk space in our hands.

returning to topic, I'm really enjoying Proposal Daisakusen, until now is on the top of my seasons list, LIAR GAME is interesting and all but is just another drama if you know what I mean, and I think I will drop joudan janai just it isn't my type.

I have not seen Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Go and Bambino yet but as soon I get some time I will watch them. :P

'Sexy Voice and Robo' is my favorite drama series this season by a mile, but I also think it could be one of those ones you either love or hate. But here's what I think of it:

Both, Ohgo Suzuka and Matsuyama Kenichi, give great performances--Ohgo has a very naturalistic acting style while Matsuyama does an excellent job at portraying an overly-energetic otaku. Their teamwork is great from the start, and seems to improve as each episode progresses. The supporting cast is also great, as they really do 'support' the main leads who are still inexperienced at playing lead roles; I feel that they help to tie the loose ends together.

The drama itself is great too. Each episode has a fairly interesting story (for the most part, the episodes have not connected too much so far), and as a whole, it's humorous, weird, but also invokes tears at times. Each episode has its own message and/or underlying meaning, and I like how it presents this to the viewer without going out of its way to shove the message into his or her face.

However, I unfortunately felt that episodes 4 and 5 (the two more recent episodes) didn't hold up as well when compared to the first three, as they seemed to be weaker in presenting the message factor. However, with that said, they were still entertaining and had their good moments. They were good--but they just seemed to be lacking the one little thing that made the first three episodes great. Anyway, I think 'Sexy Voice and Robo' is worth giving a chance.

Anyway, other from this, I am watching several other series: 'Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Gou,' 'Liar Game,' 'Proposal Daisakusen,' 'Watashitachi no Kyokashi, and 'Joudan Janai.'

'Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Gou' is probably my second favorite this season. I think it had a somewhat slow start, but really started to take off starting at the end of the second episode. As doubledown11 wrote, Tanaka's character really makes the viewer want to cheer him on in his attempts to make Terumi his own personal 'Heroine.' I feel that the story has quite a twist when compared to the typical romance/seishun drama, and the relationships between the various characters really help to pull everything together.

'Liar Game' and 'Proposal Daisakusen' are both pretty good in that they keep you entertained, but they also seem like ones that viewer will eventually forget about after having finished the series. Both definitely had the potential to be better, as they both have pretty mediocre acting. With that said however, 'Liar Game' has a very interesting story that keeps the viewer wanting to see the next episode, and 'Proposal Daisakusen' is 45 minutes of relaxing fun.

I'm a little behind on 'Kyokasho' and 'Joudan,' but overall, 'Kyokasho' seems like it'll keep me on the edge of my seats, while 'Joudan' seems pretty 'blah' in everything from its premise and comedic situations.

Koki's drama is great. I really like the whole thing with the train fascination, it's different and too hiliarious. My favorite drama this season. Somehow the ratings are so low. ; ;

doubledown11 - evil! But you speak the truth. No matter how crappy the drama is, I have to support them Johnnys. Like ProDai is really boring & average but I am only watching it to check out Yamashita.

I'm watching Liar Game, Proposal, Hanayome, Joudan and sexyvoice.

I'm dropping hanayome and joudan (even if im a ueno juri fan) because they are not very interesting.

The very best so far is Sexyvoice and Robo.
This drama is just different and the main characters are absolutely fantastic in it.

I'm watching ProDai, Bambino and Hotelier this season. I wasn't going to watch Hotelier, but I was bored one day and watched the first episode, and
decided I needed to watch the second, and after seing that I was hooked. But I might just jump off again if it doesn't keep up with my expectations.

Bambino, only seen one episode so far, but it's looking good.

ProDai is my favourite, mostly because of Yamapi, but I like the story so far, and episode 4 was amazing, I hope it will continue like that.

Just finished watching up to episode 5 of Sexy Voice & Robo.
I'm glad you encouraged me to persist with this series. I agree Suzuka and Matsuyama Kenichi are great in their roles. Suzuka seems mature beyond her years. She also reminds me of a friend I kmow. Okada Yoshinori also adds hilarious comedic relief. Considering so many Jdramas follow previously successful yet trite/threadbear blueprints it's nice to see effort made to come up with something unique/different.

Still it has yet to supercede Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Go for best drama this season. Definitely in the top 3 though.
Although you could argue TT3G is somewhat formulaic:
1. JE actor (Tanaka Koki)
2. Otaku theme (Tetsu's: train otakus)
3. Underdog courting girl clearly out of his league

I would counter that this season, no other series thusfar has spent more effort in creating such detailed, dynamic characters. Sexy Voice and Robo does a great job in portraying the humanistic side of the "antagonist" but I think TT3G has done a better job of fleshing out the complexities of the main characters' personalities.
Both shows place alot of attention to detail. Both series are character driven with emphasis on dialogue and storytelling (substance) over "sexy" characters and flashy cliffhangers (style).
Although TT3G appears over-the-top in its humor (similar to My Boss My Hero) it has a lot of subtle, quiet moments that just bring a smile to your face.
TT3G doesn't have a gripping plot but I can't overstate how excellent the storytelling is in Tokkyu Tanaka 3 Go. The performances by Kuriyama Chiaki, Tsukamoto Takashi, Akiyama Ryuji are also outstanding. Although Tanaka Koki seems merely to be playing his real-life character/personality, he does an excellent job with the lead role and hjave no complaints with his performance thusfar/
This show has been doing poorly from a ratings standpoint. It has a subtle greatness that goes over the heads of most casual Jdrama viewers. It doesn't bother me that the JE teeny-bopper crowd isn't supporting this series but I hope that TBS isn't dissuaded from making quality shows like TT#G in the future despite the poor ratings in Japan.

Proposal Daisakusen
LIAR GAME
Bambino!

LIAR GAME is my favorite so far. I love Shota in it. But MatsuJun is pretty darn cute in Bambino! too. It's change from his haughty character (although he was sweet in HYD too) in HYD and I love his adorableness. :)

I've watched a bit of Sexy Voice & Robo, and I'm keeping up with LIAR GAME :3 Both are good, though I need something faster to keep me going, so I'm enjoying LIAR GAME better. As people have said, the casting and the story could've been better, but it's entertaining enough.
