[Tutorial] How to convert .OGM files to MPEG (VCD/DVD)
Tutorial: How to convert .OGM files to MPEG
This tutorial was originally written by mt877.
The tutorial describes how you can convert your .ogm files to .mpg to create VCDs or Video DVDs. It just describes how to create VCDs but creating Video DVDs is very similiar. (You just select DVD Video profile in TMPGenc and burn it later as Video DVD in Nero).
In a similiar way you can also convert other file formats (e.g. avi, mkv, rm, rmvb, ...) to MPEG. You just have to extract the audio and video data and transcode it into a format TMPGenc can handle.
Tools & Filters required:
Ogg Directshow Filter - Allows playback/access to OGM/OGG files with DirectShow capable clients
official homepage: http://tobias.everwicked.com/oggds.htm
VobSub / Directshow VobSub - Allows subtitles with VirtualDub or playback/access with Directshow capable clients
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VobSub.htm
OGMDemuxer - Extract all data from an OGM (wrapper) file
http://cyrius.bunkus.org/ogmtools.html
dBpowerAMP converter - Audio converter tool (download the dBpowerAMP ogg vorbis codec as well)
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm
TMPGenc - Transcode avi to mpeg1 (VCD), mpeg2 (SVCD), or mpeg2 (DVD)
http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/index.html (download the freeware version)
Nero Burning ROM
http://www.nero.com/us/index.html
Note: All applications / filters I refer to are freeware except Nero Burning ROM. There is also a pay version of TMPGenc which has no time limit on SVCD/DVD transcoding. If you need that version, pay for it or be "creative".
Install everything listed above. You may need to restart for the filters to load properly after install. (usually you don't need to)
First extract all data from the OGM wrapper, you need OGMDemuxer.
It is a command line tool, so hope you know your way around a command prompt.
Drop OGMDemuxer into the same folder as your OGM file or add a path in environmental
variables for universal access. I won't discuss environmental variables, if you know what it is then great. Usually after extraction you'll have an avi without sound, 1 or 2 ogg audio files, depends on how many language audio tracks the ripper added in. There may also be 1 or 2 subtitle files, in .srt, .smi or .sub format, the number depends on how many languages the ripper added in.
If you have multiple audio tracks, play them in WMP, after confirming which track you want to use rename it to match the avi file, except the file extension. If you have multiple subtitle files, open them in notepad or wordpad to check the language. Rename it to match the avi file except the file extension. While you have the subtitle file open, you should also check for typos and grammar mistakes. This is your chance to make needed corrections before you permanently hard-code them into the video.
You should now have abc.avi, abc.ogg, abc.srt.
Right click the avi file and check the properties for the video frame rate. It should be 29.97 (NTSC), 23.98 (NTSC Film), or 25 (PAL), remember this for later.
Run dBpowerAMP Converter and convert the ogg audio file to uncompressed WAV format. Same name as before except use .wav as the extension.
Run TMPGenc, navigate to Option menu, Environmental setting... click the VFAPI plug-in tab and look for DirectShow Mutlimedia File Reader, right click the number in the priority column and set it higher, like to 3. Click "OK" to close the the window. Exit TMPGenc and run it again to make sure the change takes effect. You only need to do this the first time you setup TMPGenc.
You will find many tutorials on how to use TMPGenc on the web. Here's just enough to get you going.
Run TMPGenc, open the Project Wizard if not open already. Select NTSC, NTSC Film, or PAL under the Video CD heading. Click Next button. Load in the avi for Video File, load in the wav for Audio File. Click Next button. Click Other settings button. Video tab, set Motion Search Precision to Highest Quality (very slow), Advanced tab, set Video arrange Method to Full screen (keep aspect ratio). Click OK button. Click Next button. Select the type of media you will burn to later. Click Next button. Name the file to save, encode immediately... and wait for the VCD mpeg to be created. If you had subtitles and as long as it was named exactly as the avi file, DirectShow VobSub should load and the subtitle will be hard-coded into the video. You should check for a curved green arrow to appear in the Windows taskbar somewhere near the clock, this indicates that DirectShow VobSub is active.
Ok, done transcoding to mpeg format? Fire up Nero, select NTSC or PAL VCD format, select the mpeg file and burn to CD. That's it you're done. Ok, view it on your DVD player, does it work? Yes? Now you're done, sit back and watch the moving picture show.

Just like extracting the video, audio and subtitle streams from ogm files, you need to do the same for mkv files.loveforever wrote:helppppp... Could someone help me to convert MVK file to MPEG?I had dowload a few EP. of Sweet 18 . I want to make them to VCD. I had dowload all the program that MoerkJ
said but I did not know how to use for mvk file. I did good on avi file. THankssssssssssss
You'll need mkvtoolnix to accomplish that task. After you extract the data streams, then you should be able to handle them like normal.

Hello mt877!!!!!! I had read the web that you gave to me, but I could not understand it, I was confusing. I think that I will dowload agian some avi files, Forget about MKV file. but anyway thank you a lot ...... Now I had a problem, could you help me please!!!!! I have problem with TMPGenc. When I load the video file into TMPGenc to transfer them to Mpg, but the picture is not real . I just only saw the black colors. Because I had reinstall TMPGenc again that why I think that I make some mistake. Could you tell me to fix this problem? I want the real color in the file when they put sub into it. Thanks you!!!
Hi loveforever,
Avi files are funny because it is a file format, but there really is no standard for encoding the video or audio streams. For instance you
can have an avi with divx/mp3 or xvid/mp3 or divx/ac3 or dv/pcmwav and the list goes on.
First can you play back the avi in Windows Media Player? You can also use GSpot to check the avi and your system for the
proper video and audio codecs needed to play the avi file. So maybe you are having a codec issue with the avi file you're trying to convert.
You said you reinstalled TMPGenc, so maybe something is not configured correctly.
At least do this:
Run TMPGenc, navigate to Option menu, Environmental setting... click the VFAPI plug-in tab and look for DirectShow Mutlimedia File Reader,
right click the number in the priority column and set it higher, like to 3. Click "OK" to close the the window. Exit TMPGenc and run it again
to make sure the change takes effect. You only need to do this the first time you setup TMPGenc.
One setup in TMPGenc that is often overlooked is the preview option. It is under 'Option' menu > 'Preview option' , make sure 'Display
with thinning' is selected. If 'Do not display' is selected then you will have a black video preview window during the conversion and could be
fooled into thinking that TMPGenc is not working correctly.
Anyway, my best guess is that you're having a video codec issue, so make sure to use GSpot to analyze the avi and your system.

Help....
Thanks mt877! I had done all the step that You told me. Now I have a problem. After I use Nero to burn the movie file out, then The Disc get stuck. When I put it on DVD playe, I watch the movie near to the end that the picture could not move for a few second and continue to play. Run until the end of movie then they could not move and just stand there. I had thrown a few DVD disc because of that problem. Did I make mistake in something. Do I need reinstall Nero Program again? When I copy disc to disc, there is the same that problem. Could you help me to fix it? Thanksssss
I must assume you made a VCD or SVCD mpg from avi.
If you converted avi to VCD mpg, then in Nero you must select vcd video cd and select the mpg file and burn, also make
sure to always choose the same video format that you used for converting in TMPGenc, NTSC or PAL. Also vcd should
only be burned to CD-R / CD-RW not DVD media. When you insert the CD into your player it must display VCD on
the tv screen.
If you made a SVCD mpg, then select svcd in Nero, also correct NTSC or PAL. Also only burn to CD-R / CD-RW not DVD media.
When you insert the CD into your player, in this case, it must display SVCD on the tv screen.
Since you say you wasted some DVD discs, then it sounds like you burned straight DVD data discs, so I think you have to do
what is written above for VCD or SVCD.
I hope this fixes your problem.

help...
Thanks mtt788 ! I fix this problem. Thank you a lot. But I have a problem right now in Sweet 18 Ep 8. Because The video file and sub that I dowload in different file then i put the sub of Ep 8 inside video file by TMPGEnc. There is no sub appear. Could you tell me what happen and how to fix it. Thankssss
Check the file names, they must be the same except for the file extension...
Example: Sweet_18_ep08.avi , Sweet_18_ep08.srt
If they are not the same then Direct VobSub will not load the sub file.
If you can play the avi and get subs to display using Windows Media Player,
then you should not have any problems with TMPGenc. Please read the top
tutorial message again, and use the info about file naming, and Direct VobSub.

help
when I rename the smi file to srt file, it will appear the Korean sub not English sub. so do you know what wrong is this ?
1. The time codes in the smi file must be slightly out of sync. There are various tools at videohelp that can be used to adjust the timing for the smi file.
2. You can't just rename smi to srt, this will not work. You have to convert from one subtitle format to another using tools you can find at videohelp. If the smi does not use complex font color and text position tags, then smi to srt conversion should be easy. But if the smi has complex font color, size, selection and position tags, then conversion from smi to srt will be very time consuming and manual corrections will need to be done to get a correct output. Better in that case not to convert, unless you have plenty of spare time and patience.

I've never done this before, so I hope this message is in the correct place...
question, I have an .ogm I can play it fine, after some new installations, but I can't get the TMPGEnc or any other editor for that matter to read the avi file that the OGMDemuxer utility creates. I have followed your insturctions to the letter and nothing on my pc can access the avi it spits out. everything else works as expected, the .srt files etc. What's up man. this is also the first time for me trying the utility, so maybe I overlooked something simple, but the proerties of the avi also do not show FPS. It does show dimensions, and Vid Sample size though.

I'm lotech so is trying to opt out for a simple way. Found this in google search:

Has any1 used this program? (Avi2Dvd) is it any good? I'd like to use a simple program but not compromising on quality (sorry I'm asking too much? )
Had to ask this as I bought cucusoft to convert avi with sub to VCD but I loose out on quality as the picture can get blurry sometimes so settle back with good old free Virtualdub!
If no1 has used Avi2Dvd then I'll have to ask some noob question later as I tried Moerkj instruction but got a bit stuck...

Sorry, never ysed the program but my suggestion is to use Nero Vision 3. It's a great program and you can create your own menus when burning as DVD. As well, if you need to shrink, use DVD Shrink. it helps out a LOT.Learner wrote:I'm lotech so is trying to opt out for a simple way. Found this in google search:
