what's a good real-life, relationship type of series?
for example Great Teacher Onizuka and Orange Days dealt with personal issues and relationships in a very well-executed way

are there any other superb series such as these?

I also don't like the super-slow sad sad dramas

If you like GTO how about Yankee bokou ni kaeru? I thought that was pretty good.
Another serie I would like to recommend is Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, it was my fav
from last season. I dont really know if it could be called real-life relationship, but
I guess maybe, but with a humour twist.

Another one that can probably suit your need is
14 no haha. Its about the girl becoming a mother at the age of 14. So far there are
2 episodes but seem very promising. I'm not sure that some people might view it
as a super-slow sad sad drama. but for me it would be more like a touching and
heart warming drama.

Hope thats help.

most high school based dramas have romance elements. Hana Yori Dango is one of the most successful school romance dramas in recent memory

Anyone know of some good, mostly funny, partly cool dramas I could get into?

I haven't really seen very much, and I'm pretty knew to this whold J-Drama world... so Im fairly ignorant on what's good, what isn't, so I'd really aprreciate some suggestions!

So far I've only seen....

Great Teacher Onizuka ~ it was a tad cheesy... but really fun to watch...
H2 ~ Not as funny as Adachi's stuff... but I loved how it was filmed, and the music....
Lunch Queen ~ Hilarious. I love it!
My Boss My Hero ~ One of the funniest things I've ever seen....
Gokusen ~ Somehow the Yakuza + School = Wacky Hijinks formula seems to work for me every time.... :P

...And of course.... Nodam Cantabile, which is awesome beyond belief.

~____~

Anywho, basically I'm looking for something funny and well-acted... preferably something "in line" with what I've seen and liked (and so listed) in the past.....

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

~and in the meanwhile, I'll start reading through this MASSIVE topic..... ~___~

My HD is big enough to watch ~all~ of that, but I've started d/ling Attention Please and the Last Christmas batch torrent.

However.... many of the Attention Please torrents have zero seeds... so if anyone who has 'em feels like seeding this week, it would sure make me happy! :)

I've heard about Orange Days before... so I'll check that out once I burn a bunch of stuff off my comp.

Thanks for the suggestions!

People says that you can cry alot in {1 litre of tears} BUT I cried more in {Kami wa Saikoro Wo Furanai} which is even better!!!!

I also think that {Attention Please} is good becuase it is funny but also it shows how Misaki Yoko (Ueto Aya) changes.

yay, another Kami wa Saikoro Wo Furanai fan, I thought it was one of the best jdramas of that season. However, I think it stalled a bit towards the end.

I think it's only been about 3 years since I first started watching J-Dramas. My very first series was You Are Under Arrest which was OK but it spurred my interest for more. Thanks to D-Addicts and JEM sites, I've been able to get a fill-up for the addiction that we all seem to have. The happy ones make me happy and the tragic ones make me cry but all of them have become my preference to what's on the local tube. All of these have been made possible because of the hard work of the fan sub community. To them I thank so much. My favorites are below:

H2 - sports drama with love story. it has nice love triangle (more like square)
Hana Yori Dango
Orange Days - well not really teenager.. but college so close enough
Sekai No Chuushin - depressing
1 Litre of Tears - depressing; love between a man and a woman is not really the main focus but it does have it.

You should check out the sentai series. They are where the power rangers come from. Tho many are sci-fi, but lots of them have magic elements.

But since live action FX are expensive to do in a level that would satisfy an adult audience, they are not often in nighttime drama. However, in recent dramas, Saiyuuki comes to mind

J-Dramas without Moralistic tone

Post by Hydex » Nov 14th, '06, 00:49

So I tried a few dramas (DragonZakura, Kurosagi, My Boss My Hero and a few others), and I often enjoyed the first few episodes, then I got bored for a few reasons :
Romance (I don't mind romance in general, but for instance in Kurosagi the good girl who always tries to change the hero ... made me mad, it was too much :salut: ), and moral (Work Hard ! in DragonZakura, and "Bad Boy Yakuza becomes a good student who loves working" in My Boss my Hero).
The humour was good in my boss my hero, but the moralistic tone was too much , and i hated the ending.
So do you have any series I should appreciate? Something that doesn't have dumb romance (e.g not something where you can guess what will happen just loonking at the first episode), and is not moralist?
Or is it impossible ? :cussing:

Thank you !

And please, excuse my bad english, as it's not my native tongue ...

Judging from your list, it seems like you picked pretty mediocre dramas (no offense intended :lol).

If you like humor, then I suggest Trick (all seasons). I found that to be the funniest series in recent memory. I also liked Tiger & Dragon (stars same lead as My Boss, My Hero), but it may be difficult to appreciate that one if you don't understand Japanese or if the subs don't capture all the humor.

If you want action or suspense, try Unfair. Rondou is also pretty good, but it also has romantic elements, which it seems you do not like.

I'm currently searching DramaWiki for these series :) Thanks!
Concerning romance, it's not that I really dislike it, it can be interesting when the girl isn't dumb and when there is at least a bit of suspense, so that you don't know that the girl will end with the hero at first sight...

Edit : Well I'm not sure if the change of title is really appropriate  ...

my recommendation would be Ikebukuro West Gate Park (IWGP), it's more or less about gang life in Ikebukuro (Tokyo) and not really moralistic (I think).

I would recommend Ame to Yume no Ato ni. In my opinion it has what u're looking for. The trials the lead characters go through and strengthen their bond. It's very beautiful.

Yeah, you're definitely watching the wrong dramas.
People praise the dramas you've seen just because of one or two actors/actresses like Yamapi.

The best advice is to stay away from all school dramas, they will suck. Try watching the really weird and wacky ones.

If you don't like too moral drama

Not all school dramas are bad, although I must admit that I haven't watched many. I liked Nobuta wo Produce enough, and watched it purely because of recommendation. Didn't know who the actors and actresses were either when I started to watch it.

Try Kemonomichi, although there aren't any English subtitles available. It isn't exactly yakuza, but I also like the yakuza theme and this drama hangs around that genre.

Otaku in J-dramas

Post by yukisaru » Nov 19th, '06, 22:49

Does anyone know of any J-Dramas (apart from Densha Otoko) which portray Otaku (men)? I'm really interested in how they are represented on J-TV.

Any suggestions welcome? :-)

Regarding trendy dramas, Densha Otoko was really the first one I know of. Otaku do play supportive and minor parts in others, but Densha Otoko is the leader. There are a few other that followed Densha Otoko, such as Akihabara@DEEP, so you may want to try that drama, although I'm not sure if there are English subtitles for it.

well, there's this new jdrama from tv-nihon called Akihabara@deep. The story is about an otaku group tryng to save their city. This one is a comedy type of drama.

Thanx you guys - I will take a look at Akihabara@deep. I've never heard of this before! It seems to me Otaku are positioned in comedy more than any other genre. I wonder why?

What I also find fascinating is the idea of Otaku(ness) & Otaku masculinity. Not sure if you have any thoughts on this?

I'd like to see more J-Dramas with Otaku in so I can compare. If you know of any other J-drama which feature Otaku, even if they are minor parts, then I would be grateful if you could let me know.

Thanks again!

In summary, otaku isn't exactly something a person would be proud to be. In the West, people are almost "proud" to be otaku (Hey man, I'm a treker!!!) In Japan, being an otaku isn't exactly a lifestyle to be proud of. From what I've observed over the years, most parents of these people eventually "give up" on them, and allow them to pursue these obsessive passions for certain things. Some of the parents even fund these otaku obsessions - even when these otaku are in their 20s. Otaku males can be masculine just like other men; they just have that one mental problem where they can totally consume their mental and physical time with a certain hobby. One other thing to keep in mind is that otaku aren't just males; there are also female otaku.

This is why otaku are used in comedies; they're really a joke. There really isn't anything serious about them when used in a storyline. At least I can't think of any non-comedic scenarios. Maybe if one is found beaten up to a pulp at a back alley on Otome Road. :lol

Anyone wanna recommend me some good sport/romance dramas?

After watching Sawajiri Erika in two typical "dying girl" dramas, I feel I need a change in genre. (I also just finished watching Pride, and H2)

You might like the Trick series... There is a lot of humor, but there is also a lot of mystery and suspense. Along the same lines would be Odoru Daisousasen.
The Ooku series are purely about plots and court intrigue in feudal Japan.
I've never actually gotten around to watching it, but Koi ni Ochitara might more accurately fit the description you posted.
You might also try Rondo, which ppl often compare to a Japanese version of the Infernal Affairs HK film series...

If you don't need english subs, then I'd also recommend something like Kemonomichi or Koori no Sekai...

Personally, I thought Attack No. 1 was one of the best sports dramas ever made...
Even though the conflict gets pretty weird and artificial, it somehow escaped being totally campy (and you can't really blame them for that since it is based off of a shoujo manga... ^_^; ). No dying girls in this one... :whistling:
And there's always Waterboys...

Joou no Kyoushitsu (aka Queen of the Classroom)
Nobuta wo Produce
Stand Up!
Kisarazu Cats Eye
Orange Days?

Can anyone recomend a feel-good/comedy/school/teen related jdrama... with no sick/dying girl/guy...
I've seen most of the previous recommendations, ie: gto, gokusen, hana yori, dragon zakura, my boss my hero, attention please, nobuta produce, etc...

Hi all, i wanted someone to suggest me some movies to watch. I did look through some pages in this topic but not all(50 pages  ) so maybe someone already answered the same question.

I'm interested in drama, romance. Not comedies. Something that would give me a feel of what life in japan and its people are like, their life, troubles etc.(classics are okay too) Appropriate too :)

(one more question)
Why there are no Japanese MOVIES on this site, only series. I mean for some very well known movies there are even no dead torrents here.. (?)

Thanks

P.S. I watched Kikujiro just yesturday, i liked that one a lot.

This topic is for Jdramas, meaning televisison programs. Please use the Recommended Jmovies Thread for movies.

As for the reason why there are no movies here, it's plain and simple. This site is dedicated to Asian Television. There are plenty of other sites that cater to people interested in movies. You can get more info on where to find those places in these threads:
Links of Interest
Asian Movie Torrent Links

The No Movies Policy originally came about b/c of a couple incidents with the MPAA back in the early days, and we came to the conclusion that it really just isn't worth the hassle when we really want to focus on television anyways. So there is a ban on uploading movie torrents to the tracker. No posting of direct download links (or any other filesharing method) to movie torrents either. You can let ppl know about sites or sources to find them, but that's about it.

The torrent search only finds torrents on DA's tracker. But we don't hold a monopoly and there are other trackers out there too, you know (most notably JTV and Jem)... :roll
Links are all on the lefthand sidebar.

And just for the heck of it, here:

i don't know if this counts but.. Gokusen? theres not much stuff about the yakuza in it, but she does kick some ass from time to time.
Youve pretty much seen all the ones I could think of.. (MBMH, T&G, IWGP)

for comedy.. you should try..
Kisarazu Cat's Eye
