what brand of phones they are using actually? it's kind of cool to see their flip phones in the dramas.

I just came back from Japan last month, and I had so much phone envy when I was over there. Some of the neat features that these phones can do aside from the camera stuff and all that we already have in the states....
Electronic Compass.
Tilt Sensor (mainly for games)
Position Locator (It can tell you what cross streets you are near)
Barcode Scanner (almost standard in all Japanese phones).
TV.
Vodaphone has a message system that allows you to send Emoticons through their service to other Vodaphones.
Those are the ones that I can think of at the moment... there are probably other features that I don't know about too.

i need that position locator too. maybe i'll stop getting lost all the time, LOL.
but yeah, the cell phones i see in dramas are hot. i wish i had such a cool looking phone. i recently got a new phone, and while i was trying to decide which phone to get, i'm just like "AHH! these phones are so ugly!" these dramas have sure set my standard high...

yeah, neat features. one comment. when i visited japan a few years ago, the phones were getting so small, you could almost accidentally eat them. but it's interesting that the phones have gone to a larger size because they like the tv/video feature.Psygnius wrote:Electronic Compass.

I have a toshiba W4IT (AU phone). I have no idea about fancy features like tilt sensor, position locator etc. If it does or doesnt have those things I dont really care, I bought this phone because it has a 3.3GB hard disk to which I can rip music CDs. Coolest thing ever I think, since now I dont need to carry a phone and an mp3 player. I dont know about phones outside japan, there are probably ones with hard disks, right? Though if I think about australian prices, they are probably $500 or something.. this phone cost me 10 or 15 thousand yen I think.
As for drama, I saw my model of phone on a drama one time, no idea what show it was though.

That Toshiba W4IT sounds somewhat like the LG Chocolate phone from Verizon. It is basically a music player and a phone in one. I'm not sure how big the internal memory is though.
It's more common to see phones with SD slots than ones with big internal memory though.
Yeah, most American phones are pretty equivalent to 15,000 Yen in cost (probably a little bit more than that actually), but most of them are usually free if you sign a two-year phone plan with a cellphone provider. I personally hate being tied down to a contract, so I usually buy my phone on eBay and switch out my SIM card.
$500 AU for a phone? Nah.... I actually just recently bought an Australian phone from eBay. A Nokia 5140i, it's a cellphone that isn't sold in America yet, and I paid $125 AU shipped, which is less than $100 USD.
Some of you might be wondering why I bought this phone from a different country. Well, here are some of the features of this nifty phone.... electronic compass, electronic bubble level, electronic temerature, PTT (which is not supported by GSM carriers yet), and the basic MP3 ringtones and camera features.

hey is this the function where the cell phone can take a picture of some weird art on paper, and press a button, and it'll translate to a website or something?Psygnius wrote:Barcode Scanner (almost standard in all Japanese phones).
the last time i was there, i was looking at some ad in a restaurant with a small black and white box that looked like some messed-up photo. my friend explained that one can take a pic with their cellphone, then press some kind of button and have it translate to a website or something.
Yeah, you're exactly right, but occasionally, instead of just going to a website, I think it can give you wallpapers from the site or possibly other goodies.
Here's a pic of the square box you're talking about.

yeah, that's the one. so the feature's called 'barcode reader'? if i ask my friends in japan, they would know what i'm talking about? or is the feature called something else?Psygnius wrote:Here's a pic of the square box you're talking about.

Well, I don't know the actual name of it. I just call it a barcode reader. I just found out that the actual name of the square is a Semacode. Not sure if that's what the Japanese call it too, but hopefully that'll help.
If you want to download that feature onto your camera phone, the cellphone apps are at http://semacode.org

If you actually go into a phone store in australia to buy a phone outright its a little different though. Last time I checked (about a year ago) you could buy a decent phone with an SD card reader etc for AU$200 or $300 i think, higher range phones were from $400 to $800. For PDA+phone models, there were a couple that were $1000 + !Psygnius wrote:$500 AU for a phone? Nah.... I actually just recently bought an Australian phone from eBay. I dont know about other places in japan, but out here in the 'countryside' (himeji) there doesnt seem to be much choice when it comes to phones and contracts etc. you can buy a phone to use with prepaid, but only crappy phones seem to be available for those options. if you want a good phone, particular phones can only be bought if you sign up with that necessary provider. eg i could only buy my phone if i signed up with AU. so yeah i am on a contract for 1 year, but i can break out of the contract any time for ~2500 yen fee, and pay no extra on the phone. there are heaps of 1 yen plans with average phones, most of the good ones seem to be a few thousand yen. 10000 yen plus seems rare. most expensive one i saw was 40000 yen, and the phone was ugly...
Wow, 2500 Yen to break the contract early? That's pretty cheap!
Himeji, that sounds very familiar. I was in the Kansai area back in July, and I'm pretty sure I've heard that name a couple of times. Maybe I'm just thinking of the castle.
Yeah, when I bought a prepaid phone when I was visiting Japan, I was rather disappointed compared to the other cool phones. I went with Vodaphone, and their prepaid ones are not the flip phones (clam-shell type) ones. It was one of those "candy-bar" ones. Plus the one I got wasn't in English. They really should make the prepaid ones available in both languages, since those are probably what the tourists and visitors would buy anyways.
Yeah, $200 to $300 AU sounds about right for a new phone in Australia.

slight hijack.. how does the text messaging system in Japan work with cellphones? I've also seen that they don't automatically come with dropped call messages... and no one seems to have the "answering" machine function on their cellphones as far as I've seen where the owner can leave a message for the person to call back, etc...
So to the first, which numbers do what?
To the second, do some Japanese phones in Japan have an answering machine voice recorded message function? And if not, anyone know why?
/hijack

I heard there was this service from one provider in Korea, pre-written text messages are sent to the caller automaticallly when you can't or don't want to reply right away..
probably with hitting one button..
Yeah I definitely made a good choice...well I was stuck between getting the 703SH or the 803T and I did some sort of research and it seemed the 803 was better for me..plus I like the fact that it has the dictionary built it yes! It's definitely a good phone.gougz wrote:very good choice, i have the same, it's a good phone!Showtime wrote:I own a Toshiba 803T Vodafone. Probably the best investment on a phone I've ever made. Uh.. ok.. wierd. I was positive I posted a reply in this thread already about japanese mobies and text messaging... ? I guess it never got through or .. whatever. Or got deleted? Anyway if it appears I have doubled posted this, for whatever reason, for me my old post doesnt show up.
Anyway, as for all that Kim Yunmi said, my phone lists dropped calls and has voice mail. So do the phones owned by other people I know. Text messaging works by email, which is highly convenient. That way you can give someone the ability to email you but not call. Also you can email to or be emailed from the internet which is also useful since you can contact people in other countries etc directly from your mobile.

I should clarify. I meant what characters appear when you hit what numbers in what sequence? And how does one intiate Kanji? Does that make more sense.Aulcard wrote:Uh.. ok.. wierd. In another words to get a hiragana "ga" you hit X sequence of numbers, to turn that in to "perfume" you hit x key to convert it.
Or does it differ by phone making it confusing?
So I wanted to know how one can text message by phone by hitting what keys. Specifically in one show I saw a character uses a certain sequence of keys and I wanted to know if it had any significance. And also general knowledge.
Since there are 3 different writing systems and I've seen text messaging happening, I wanted to know what did it for what. If there is a chart online I'd like to see it.
Oh and thanks aboput the missed calls. I do wonder why some of the shows make a huge deal out of it though since I would think it's standard. I also find it funny that many shows also show that almost no one leaves a message, but just hangs up and the other person doesn't seem to see it... O.o;; What's up with that?
usually when you type in the hiragana, for the word, it will give you a drop screen to select the kanji that you want the word to be. The phone I was using when I was in Japan allowed you to change from hiragana to katakana and English. So there are 3 different types of writing available on Japanese phones. It's kinda like switching between all lowercase, sentence structure, and all caps on American phones.
Ok I get what you are saying now. As for hiragana input, its similar to an english phone. Each key represents one column of the hiragana chart. Eg 3 is さ, so you press it repeatedly to choose from さ し す せ そ. Except for 1 which is あ い う え お. Also 0 is わ を ん ー and some punctuation.Kim Yunmi wrote: I should clarify. As for kanji it is like the other poster said. You press ok on a word you have entered, and various kanji selections show up to choose from. For my phone, there are two kanji modes. One lets u select from recently used compounds, but if you press another button it will change to proper dictionary selection.
May I know wat phone is Yamapi using in Lunch Queen? I didn't catch that drama so I'm just curious to know wat phone he's using inside. I'm quite a fanatic myself when it comes to electronics and gadgets so I like to play with cellphones also, and I'm using a japanese keitai myself too.MinaPi wrote:Since I´ve noticed how Yamapi loved his mobile phone in Lunch Queen I just became envious! Yup, I have the same black Sharp 903sh by Vodafone in the show same as Yamapi. As Vodafone is the one of the sponsors for this show, alot of their phone models were featured in the show. Maki Horikita is using the NEC 804N in the show also by Vodafone.

I want the Sony Ericsson Z610i. It's such a Japanese lookin' phone. Not sure when it's out in the UK though and knowing my luck - it won't launch on my network and I'll have to wait months until it's available on it. I'm due for an upgrade and want this phone NOW! *lol*
The phone I need in my life
It's available on import - though it's a bit pricey. But I want it so bad - I may just fork out!

It's also available at yesasia.
Yeah, It's been on yesasia for a while.
I only saw it for the 1st time in a cellphone store on Saturday, but it's exclusive to this ONE particular store for the time being and they've only got it available in pink and as fly as the pink looks, I'd rather have the black. Shame it doesn't come in white.
Also, I'd wanna get an upgrade and pay the additional money on top for it and I wouldn't be able to do that through this store I saw the phone in - because I didn't start my contract through them.
(Damn! Gotta get that phone!)

So if any of you have a Japanese phone in the US, I hear there are problems receiving MMS since they use an email system for messages instead of MMS in Japan. I guess the only way to fix this is to put Euro firmware on there instead or a hybrid mix of Euro and Japanese firmware. Or possibly get Chinese firmware instead.

When Kurosagi was airing, the Vodafone 705T wasn't even released yet by Vodafone. The Toshiba models that were featured in the jdrama were only models like 903T and 904T. I have that one Blue. I've waited 4 yrs for a decently "japanese-looking" design to be released *^^* I'm very pleased :333JC wrote:I want the Sony Ericsson Z610i. It's such a Japanese lookin' phone.
