howzit, himeko! nice to see you around, finally. i know, yeah? i love the neighbor islands, but i think i could only live on oahu.himekohimura wrote:Hey minna >.<Himeko>.<
I'm originally from Kaneohe/Kailua, but moved to Hilo a few years back. I miss Oahu so much~! Hilo is just too quiet...*sigh*
blueeyed: thanks for all the work, you and the other nya wahines do. mahalos planny!
pretty cool you wen tutor these jp people. at least you putting your mad skills to good use, yeah? how you missed the takoyaki crew in shirokiya's? they always have some jp specialty crews coming in like takoyaki, and even that mr something (not mr donut, but that one that opened up in waiks ???).
sarc: geez, the memory the first to go! how i forgot about makino's?? i ate there about four times in the two weeks before i left the islands. both at the mililani one and the one that took over the eastern garden spot in pearl's. both are good, but i think i prefer the mililani one a bit more. i actually think they're a little better than todai's (i think they cheaper than todai's too).

Well.....they did have me working my butt off. I actually worked in Bookoff...the bookstore that leases the space in Shirokiya. So ya, I was never allowed to participate or go snooping into their wonderful food sampling or buying. I always got off work so late too that there were no food left, let alone buses for me to catch home. (lived on Wilder Ave right off H1). So ya, basically I didn't have a summer that year because I took both summer sessions back to back. 3 months of my life just scramming information in my little tight brain and working my butt off to pay for rent and food. Maybe I'll get lucky the next time I visit Oahu. When do they usually sell them? Anybody know?how you missed the takoyaki crew in shirokiya's?
There is a yakitori restaurant called "Koh no Tori" next to Imanas-Tei by the back exit of UH (Puck's Alley area - in the alley way by the 7-Eleven). The have freakin' good takoyaki year round!Kanpai wrote:Yeah, I stand in line when Shirokiya has their food festivals too. But that's only one or two weeks each summer. blueeyed: can't say when. i don't think they have a regular schedule. it's whenever they can get the jp people to come over and do their thing. the last crew i saw was from a famous store in osaka (in kuidaore). if you go to the famous bridge in osaka where you can see the glico man, there's a famous takoyaki store with a huge octopus above their door. those guys came down to do takoyaki at shirokiya's. the line was frekkin' long.
himeko, i know what you mean. i don't like zippy's, cuz the food is a bit unhealthy, but when you stay out late, what else get, yeah? but now, they sell their chilli in stores, so at least you got that.
i like hilo cuz there's so much things you can do nature-wise, but the fact that there's so few people, and not much of a nightlife would get to me. i'm not a clubber or anything, but i like having options to do something. but i don't mean this to bash on hilo. love all the islands, but personally would have a hard time living anywhere but oahu.

I'm a Kailua-Kona girl myself, born and raised. Used to want to go to Hilo cuz it had the only mall on the Big Island. But KK is growing SOOOO fast now. There's so many people, its crazy. And I used to work at the airport, so I knew the figures on the increase of travelers.
Yah I found it extremly dull and boring at night in Hilo. I couldn't believe how many shops and restaurants were actually closed on Sundays. Made me realize KK did have something to offer afterall. (Especially after hearing all the Hilo peeps talking about making special trips to KK just to visit Costco or something...) Also made me get into subbing with the rest of the Nya!Posse.
Ohyah, and I buy Zippy's stuff from Costco.

I think I'll conceal my identity, but I'm sure after this next bit you'll all have an easy time finding me on the streets with a good eye, besides, it's not that hard to find me online, anyway.

Of course, how many of you knew of that site?

Have you seen my name around this forum or have you caught it on other websites?
You can get to the forum at http://forum.scanlover.com
You're a female, what is your opinion on bikini models and pornography?
Believe it or not, I dislike porn. I'm there for the community and the non-nude models.
Habeeb it.

Hahaha! So true! Even the Japanese restaurants are named after some one. Miyo's, Miwa's, Satsuki's, Itsu's(or did they go out of business ). Ya, it's like they name their restaurants after the owner or something because everybody pretty much knows everybody else. It's like, (a figurative scenerio):SHD wrote:

B: "Yah, why?"
A: "Da owna is da kine, my uncle cuz"
B: "Ho! fo' real? I love his food man!"
Ya, Hilo is SO small it's scary. It's like the person sitting next to you in school is somehow related to you. Or worst yet, your BF/GF is your cousin and you never knew (knew a friend that happened to him....he was dating his first cousin or so and never knew it)
Oh yah, if you ever want good sushi in Hilo....I'm SO still on the sushi topic....(I blame all the boys talking about sushi over there in oahu...making me so ono for good sushi too~ ! ,go to Tsunami Grill/Ocean's Sushi Deli in downtown(same company, located right across the street from each other). Their sushi is SO ONO, BROKE DA MOUTH! Us Nya! girls absolutely just LOVE the place to death. After our Nya! nights we would pile in my truck and drive our hungry butts there just for sushi and their other yummy food. (I personally like their Tanuki Jiru a.k.a Pork miso soup with veggies with a Rainbow sushi) But they're usually packed and I think they close at around 9pm, so gotta go early. I SO can't wait for Setsuna to come back to us. Our Nya! outtings are just not complete with out the three of us.... *sniffle* Hayaku modotte ko~i!
Hahaha, I guess you shouldn't go there, then. ScanLover is tagged as an "Asian Idol Appreciation" site, but in laymen's terms, it's a porn site. However, our vision is to encourage intelligent discussion and a friendly community, so people are often surprised at the quality of the discussions.
Of course, I'm just a guy trying to defend his image and the site he supports, which isn't easy given the content.
Oh well, life goes on.

Hahaha...I just took a peek. Just looked at your opening page with all the contents and stuff listed. By the looks of it I figured it was a "dude's fantasy world page" but with class. It's cool. I totally respect it.
In fact, my brother's friends run a porn site too. Never went there since I know the dudes and always hear them bickering about how they were going to clean the pictures and make them more "ranchy".... I guess that's the word to describe it. I wanted to see their work since they were so proud of themselves, but by the convos they were having I never could bring myself to check it out.(let alone when I found out what kind of site it actually was)

Man I notice by your posts that I'm probably the youngest person in this thread, or at least one of the youngest. Feels a bit strange, but whatever. I've only gotten into one drama so far, but I have yet to finish it. That'd be Shimokita Glory Days. I'm waiting for the subtitles to be released before I watch episodes.

Cool! That's where I earned my bachelor's back when they were still called Hawaii Pacific College. Guys - if you want to go to a school with literally HUNDREDS of F.O.B. Asian girls, THIS is the school for you. Join the various cultural clubs, get a room at a co-ed dormitory and you'll be living the dramas you watch.freezingcoffee wrote:I'm going to be going to hawaii pacific this fall, so I'll see you guys there

Nah, KK is way more expensive than Hilo. There was talk about having Costco come to Hilo, but it got rejected because of all the sovereignty stuff. Too many Hawaiians protested(no offense), so they never were able to bring it.(something I heard through the grapevine...wonder if it was in the papers? ) Instead we have a Cost U Less store. Similar to Costco, but no membership needed. It's smaller and it doesn't have a good selection though. Still it's better than nothing. When ever I want stuff from Costco, I simply grab a friend with a card and kidnap them to Kona. Recently it has been Setsuna and Hime Gotta love friends.jholic wrote:

My parents could pocket a quatta million if dey like fo sell dere house in da boonies, but dey no like cuz everyting else stay more 'spensive. It seriously looks like Hilo is a dying town, and Kailua-Kona is on its way to being the next Maui or someting. If I remember correctly, the population of incoming haoles move to Oahu, Maui, and KK as the top three places in the state. And in KK we have an intersection by Borders that I believe is near the top of the list for most traffic accidents/fatalities in the state.

Is that what Beard Papa is?! I had no clue what that was until your post, thanks. I thought it was some shave ice place! There's been renovating at Salt Lake Shopping Center for months now and apparently, there will be a new Beard Papa near Long's (next to the new Coffee Bean). Haha, open-minded is good, because you really don't know what you're getting from a Korean movie! I think this is the first Korean Film Festival in Hawai`isarcasstik wrote:Any suggestions? but I was a bit disappointed in these selections simply because I'm a fan of action cinema. Shiri, Oldboy, and Bittersweet Life are my top 3 Korean Films, all have some good action scenes (and funny enough, I've seen them all at Dole Cannery at a film festival). But I have some other favs too, not jus action.
If you haven't seen many Korean movies it might be better to d/l or rent some kmovies especially because the tickets are between $9-$10. Or better yet, if you have digital cable, 118 is AZN TV and 546 is Imaginasian TV sometimes they air Kmovies on Sundays and reair them on Mondays.
For this festival, I have tickets to see Forbidden Quest. The director, Kim Dae-woo, also directed Untold Scandal which I liked a lot. Untold Scandal is based on the novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" and the similar to the more modern Cruel Intentions movie except the Korean version is set in the 18th century. The costumes and sets were absolutely beautiful, so I'm hoping the same is displayed in Forbidden Quest. If you're interested in this one, AZN Television (digital channel 118) is airing Untold Scandal tomorrow at 6p. They reair the same movie throughout the day and even once on Monday.
The only other movie I'm thinking of watching is You are my Sunshine, but after reading the synopsis on the HIFF site, I don't think I will. But the caps look good. http://www.hancinema.net/korean_movie_Y ... nshine.php Many of the Korean films I've watched change moods halfway or so through the movie, Sex is Zero and Juhong geulshi a.k.a. Scarlett Letter are examples. The synopsis seems like it something in the end will not be what I want to see atm.
FYI, if anyone wants to watch "...ing" Imaginasian TV (546) is airing it on Sunday 2p. This was a good movie, and it has one of the typical endings to expect from a Kmovie.
Since I'm talking about the other Asian Channels we now catch in Hawai`i and some of you might have found it yet digital channel 80 is KBS America/World and KBFD 2. I think they share in the programing as KBFD commercials and older subtitled dramas airs during weekdays/nights now.
Hopefully in the Fall Film Festival when they include other countries and we'll see more variety.
lol! yeah, more safe posting that in this thread--you know, local style, no talk stink about anybody, cause you neva know. well to each his/her own--i enjoyed it alot, i think part of the enjoyment was if you were following it as it was being released. thanks to some incredibly fast subbing and cooperation it was like being part of the online community in the dorama.sarcasstik wrote:Speaking of jdramas, did anyone else find Densha Otoko extremely overrated? pucca, thanks for the film festival link. not long ago HIFF was just about the only thing going but with the internet and etailers, it's becoming that films brought in are old news. i'm tired of the "Korean Wave" popularity--way past time to judge films on their own merits not because of their country of origin. still, there's one or two i'm interested in catching.
and those Beard Papa puffs--they fill them when you order so the pastry is slightly crunchy on the outside, spongy inside and a light cream. danger if they're close to your house!

LOL, "dey goin' fo' broke" as far as the Korean Wave is concerned. I wonder if it will ever slow down. I was surprised when Blockbuster started renting kdramas and when I saw Borders selling Korean dramas. Movies are one thing, but Korean dramas, it must be a bankable market. But now, I'm not really surprised at all the Korean drama things all over the place. Except Morning Glory! WTH, they all disappeared except the the Mililani store =( now I have to go online to buy all my pucca stuffs!SHD wrote:pucca, thanks for the film festival link. not long ago HIFF was just about the only thing going but with the internet and etailers, it's becoming that films brought in are old news. i'm tired of the "Korean Wave" popularity--way past time to judge films on their own merits not because of their country of origin. still, there's one or two i'm interested in catching.

Actually, I was planning to watch Oldboy a couple years ago when it aired at a film festival, but I couldn't get tickets. I think I'm gonna have to rent that one at some point. I guess the Densha Otoko's whining just got a little too annoying for me. Although, I loved Jinkama. That role put her in my fav actress list for sure. Imperial March... too funny. I agree though, it was awesome how fast it got released. I guess in some sense, it's not as professional as some of the other subbing teams (as far as consistency and the fancy shmancy effects), but I guess it was still pretty cool. Like "by the fans for the fans" kine feel. The same thing sort of happened with T & D, which was a project I was helping with. The translator got busy, but some other people decided to help out and finish it up, and I'm glad for that.SHD wrote: lol! yeah, more safe posting that in this thread--you know, local style, no talk stink about anybody, cause you neva know. well to each his/her own--i enjoyed it alot, i think part of the enjoyment was if you were following it as it was being released. thanks to some incredibly fast subbing and cooperation it was like being part of the online community in the dorama.
blueeyed & setsuna: i guess i shouldn't be too surprised at the cost of housing. was bound for go up in those places eventually. i always thought getting land out in hilo and kk was a better value. there went that idea. at $650k, i can kiss that idea goodbye. i hope the housing market eventually comes back down to earth.

well, because of our tourist-based economy, there's currently lots of work in the service area. in fact it made the papers recently that some businesses are reducing hours and services because of lack of staff. unfortunately, the wages are low and the cost of living here is high--so hope you've got housing and maybe a scholarship. on the other hand you'll probably have an opportunity to meet a lot of asians--which by being on this board, you'd probably not mind.freezingcoffee wrote:I'm probably going to need a job when I'm on the island, what is a good place for a freshman to work at?

coffee: if i remember correctly, you'll be at hpu, right? i would guess that they would have in-house jobs for students that would work around your schedule. since you'll also be in downtown, there is a lot of opps for internships, p/t jobs at one of the restaurants, or even working at ala moana or restaurant row.
you could even consider a job as a waiter. i couldn't believe how much my friend was making in tips.
will you be a full-time student?
good luck!

Yeah, I'm going to hpu and I am a full time student, only 12 credits though, so I should have some spare time. If I recall, did you move to the NoVa area, thats where I am from.jholic wrote:coffee: if i remember correctly, you'll be at hpu, right? i would guess that they would have in-house jobs for students that would work around your schedule. since you'll also be in downtown, there is a lot of opps for internships, p/t jobs at one of the restaurants, or even working at ala moana or restaurant row.

Right on, thanks. I may make it out there one day to see what they have but I so suck at driving around town. I finally figured out the Nimitz, King, and Dillingham recently. I get lost so easily on those three roads!sarcasstik wrote:Nah, still get the one on Keeaumoku yah?puccakiss79 wrote: Except Morning Glory! WTH, they all disappeared except the the Mililani store =( now I have to go online to buy all my pucca stuffs!
@jholic: I drove by that Family Drive-In you were talking about earlier. Sorry to say they are currently closed down. There wasn't any sign saying they were closed for renovating but that whole shopping center is actually being renovated. They just opened up some new stores recently like Starbucks/Jamba Juice, Yummy's, GameStop, and I think soon they will open a Panda Xpress and Koa Pancake House. Maybe the Family Drive-In will relocate to one of the new spots. The spot I thought you were talking about is actually the other side of Nimitz near Byron's (closer to Lagoon Drive side). They have Starbucks over there as well!
coffeeHow about a job at a video store =) Watch movies and play video games for free. ^_~
eh, you local! how you can say that?? nah, i pretty bad too, sometimes. i hate when i gotta go somewhere on s king or s beretania. they both one-way, and i always end up being on king when i gotta find something on beretania, or vice versa. i always forget which part of the street stay on, so i gotta drive like five cross-streets down, just so that when i go back the other direction, i no miss um.puccakiss79 wrote:....but I so suck at driving around town. yikes! i hope it's not permanent. and hopefully, they no need raise their prices either. if you go about 11am, you can get three different sizes of pre-made bentos ($3/4/5), or their lunch special ($5.50). i ate there couple of times a week. i miss them pretty badly.puccakiss79 wrote:@jholic: I drove by that Family Drive-In you were talking about earlier. coffee: i like pucca's suggestion of a video store. you could always try the bookstore in chinese cultural center (close to hpu) - or if you don't mind the traffic, go work in waikiki somewhere. even better, work at one of the many karaoke places in hawaii. unfortunately, i don't think any of these jobs will pay too well.

Haha, totally same here. Even Kapiolani is pretty bad. Impossible to make left turns sometimes. When I first moved here, I was renting near town, and it was such a pain to drive anywhere. So many one way streets. My excuse is I'm from Mauijholic wrote:eh, you local! how you can say that?? nah, i pretty bad too, sometimes. i hate when i gotta go somewhere on s king or s beretania. they both one-way, and i always end up being on king when i gotta find something on beretania, or vice versa. i always forget which part of the street stay on, so i gotta drive like five cross-streets down, just so that when i go back the other direction, i no miss um.puccakiss79 wrote:....but I so suck at driving around town. And btw, I watched "...ing" SO GOOD I seriously liked it way better than "My Sassy Girl" as blasphemous as that may sound.
WoW!
Just found this website recently and am still trying to figure out how to download and watch what's available.
I grew up in Hawaii and moved to the Mainland, but what I miss was all those subtitled dramas that I used to watch on KIKU TV. My mother was cute! She started watching the Korean dramas and encouraged me to watch. Had to explain to her that unlike Hawaii, the Korean dramas in LA are not always sub-titled. However, through the Internet and (sigh!) breaking down to actually buy the DVDs, I was able to watch certain shows although it was a strain on the pocketbook.
When I saw the variety on this website, I was excited!
Anyways, have a wonderful day!
A hui hou!

Aloha Willx24601. No time to watch drama? =( I'm overwhelmed with dramas at the moment!
Help?I'm looking for some help from a Hawaiian Language Student or someone who might know/remember because I forgot.
Anyone can translate this name to Hawaiian? "The righteous hawk that rises from the turbulent sea?" It's a name so I don't want to translate it to a sentence form, so far my Hawaiian Dictionary and my sister help me get "ke `io pono e ala ana ke kai `ale`ale." I'm pretty sure I'm missing a locative marker "i" between ana and kai, but if anyone might know if this is correct or way off, any assistance is appreciated. Mahalo. (I wish we really had a shaka emoticon).

howzit, mimmi: nice to see you drop by again.
eh, Will, great to see you here. hope you get more time soon. must be pretty busy if you cannot even watch all your dramas. geez, couldn't believe they let a movie like snakes on a plane out in theaters. was it even worth the money?
hey, pucca. as for the hawaiian translation, you tried calling UH hawaiian language dept? gotta have some grad students or professors that would love to opportunity to help you.
"The righteous hawk that rises from the turbulent sea" - translated in pidgin is "HO!"

East Oahu checking in
Doomo!
Lived in Manoa last 6 years, now in East Oahu. Too hot...and bad drivers!
Lived in Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Kauai.
We should have a get together sometime, so we can all watch dramas together.
Then we can shout out translations!
Good places to rent asian DVDs in town?
I used to like to get the ones at SuperConnected Nuuanu Shopping Plaza, but they closed down...
Selections seem limited at Aloha Video, Japan Video, Nippon Video, and Casper, all town locations.
Video Systems on Kapiolani has a lot of asian movie dvds, but they are all chinese bootleg types, so the quality is poor, buggy, and some of them are even in mono audio!
They may as well have shadows walking across the screen!
