Not exactly "hardcore" but pretty close, have you ever heard of "Boris" ? I saw them play in Tokyo and left with a black eye.

We are using the loose definition of hardcore: Never represented in the Oricon 100 ;^)

Guess that excludes X-Japan! Haw haw!

So, wait, all bands not on Oricon 100 are the "good" bands? Sorry, but there are lot of really talented bands that did make it there too. Like L'Arc, Luna Sea, Siam Shade. I mean jeeze, Daita is a freaking AWESOME guitarist. And I'm pretty sure all of them have made it onto the Oricon.

He didn't say that all bands NOT on Oricon 100 are good, he said all the bands ON Oricon 100 don't count.
Most likely because they're big-name over-produced crap, and to learn about them you certainly wouldn't need a post on a forum since they all have billion-yen publicity budgets.

Uh, strange reasoning you got there. So bands that dont reach the charts are automatically hardcore? Even these?

Why Onmyouza isnt hardcore doesnt take long to figure out.

1. They make themes for animes

And they have been in the oricon and done really well there, their last album GARYOTENSEI went straight to the 8th place for example.

Try Sigh (black, death metal).

Their album released last year absolutely sucks but their back catalogue are some of the most respectable music you'll find for somewhat experimental groovey black metal music.

I'll post up a few a mp3 sampes later. I particularly recommend the album Imaginary Sonicscape.

Are there any japanese bands with really good guitar play?
And I'm not talking about the typical power chord play of most bands.

Well, Chabo Reichi is a great guitar player, but his albums suck!!

Thinking about that, it's sorta the same with David Lindley and Ry Cooder... they can play anything, but their albums all suck suck suck.

Basically, guitarists should not be allowed to produce their own albums...

I wasn't applying that there wasn't good guitar play or guitarist in Japan. Just asking if anyone knew of others I may not have heard of. On the flip side, there are just as many simple chord playing bands that don't hold my interest here in American as there are in Japan. My favorite rock band in the world is The Brilliant Green. Ryo Matsui is an awesome guitar player.

What do you mean by "Real Japanese hardcore." Is it like the traditional music that's being played or new music that isn't very popular?

Does Jinkaku Radio and Naitomea count?? >_<;; *runs and hides* I don't follow Oricon so I have no idea what they're 'status' is... they're just two bands I randomly found while out searching for new music.

And also Head Phones President, pretty good band too....
