An introduction to and history of D-Addicts

Post by Keiko1981 » Jun 19th, '20, 02:21

D-Addicts was founded in November of 2003 by Ruroshin. In the beginning it started out as only an open tracker, a couple of months later a forum was added. DramaWiki and FansubWiki were both created in spring of 2005. As the years went by the site's popularity and amount of content grew, all thanks to its uploaders, fansubbers and DramaWiki editors. In November of 2014 the founder decided to close the torrent section, and in September of 2018 a new owner under the same name took his place.

No announcement from the new owner, instead I had to say something, which I think is wrong.

Thank you for this capsule history. 17 years is a good run for a website like this, and I hope it has many years ahead of it -- because, selfishly, it is my go-to site for dorama news and subs. While I get the feeling that we're in a transition period now, as a number of long-time fansubbers cut back and new ones have yet to take their place (but perhaps this is just my impression), the base of fans and contributors remains strong. Many thanks for everything you and so many others are doing to keep things up, running and constantly improving! :salut:

Indeed! Thanks for this history
I'm fortunate to remember D-Addicts back in the old days when it was a super busy tracker

Here's hoping there's a bright future ahead too

Oh really? I joined here Feb 28th, '04. [old account] I had no idea it was that new when I joined.

I love the old interface. I'm sorry, but can I change to the old one. Black hurting my eyes. I think you should make it as an option. Thanks.

I'm sorry, not with the current style. It's not something I'm able to change. I've contacted @Ruroshin and asked if an optional light style can be added.

If you're able to change the interface, then other styles will be listed under these settings.

See the mini-menu under your name at the top-right.
Control panel -> Board preferences

Yeah, there's no option to change the style in board preferences. Hopefully it will be added soon.

Anyway, thanks.

It´s almost like the owner wants to scare people away with this color scheme ... goodness me. Ugh, sorry.

Agree with minispace. This is a shockingly bad layout that hurts the eyes.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's the contrast between black and yellow? It does tire the eyes . . . .

And I'm also thrilled to see that D-Addicts has reached 20 years. There's now an incredible archive of subtitles for dramas spanning many decades (far more than 20-years old) and I still find subtitles for an old gem that I've never heard of. While the J-drama community has expanded to other platforms and to social media, one still has the ability to search back in this site for anything that's been previously subbed. And I don't mean to talk about it all in the past tense as many still utilize D-Addicts on a daily basis. Its forum style fundamentally differs from social media in creating an easily searchable record of conversations about current and past dramas with the direct interaction of the subtitler. I look forward to its continued relevance in a rapidly changing online landscape.

Happy birthday, D-addicts!

Although I kindly ask the people in charge of this sort of thing to get rid of this ugly color scheme. When I pulled up the site earlier, I thought D-addicts had been hacked because it looked so alarming and different, and I was very hesitant to log in. The color scheme makes my eyes swim, and the border at the top makes me think of caution tape and yellow lines on the road and all other manner of things designed as a warning. This is definitely not the look.

The theme is inspired from the famous now defunkt Haçienda nightclub as stated by the creator here

@Ruroshin Could you please revert back to the previous themes, that are easier on the eyes?

Very interesting! How would you describe the current state of D-Addicts?

As I am writing this, it says on the bottom that there are only 5 registered users online. Is it normally like this nowadays?

@LuxAeterna It's been like that for a number of years. You can use the Wayback Machine to see what it looked like earlier.
I do think the forum, DramaWiki, and Fansub Maps still serve a purpose today.

@Keiko1981 I just had a look through and it does seem like it's been that way for a while now.

I also believe the forum, DramaWiki, and Fansub Maps are still useful too but I was just curious.
