A long shot. Is there some way to make Aegisub 2.1.8 support x265 without having to upgrade to Aegisub 3.2.2 or re-encode videos to x264?
I do not want to use Aegisub 3.2.2 because it's easier for me to see things in the older version, and I'd kill my neck with how the audio timeline is located higher up in version 3.2.2.

Re: Aegisub 2.1.8 support for x265?
I don't know about x265 support but if you want to have the waveform view back just click on icon 18 (http://docs.aegisub.org/manual/Audio) . This will disable the spectrum analyzer mode.
EDIT: It looks like there is a bug with the icon/symbol resizing option. Only the values 24 and 32 worked for me and only sometimes. And sometimes it will resize the icons but not the frame. You have to disable and enable the toolbar to make it look right again. This is how resizing worked for me:
1. Uncheck "Show main toolbar"
2. Enter "Toolbar Icon Size" (24 or 32)
3. Check "Show main toolbar"
4. Press "Apply"
