The 52nd NHK Taiga Drama is

八重の桜 - Yae no Sakura

Drama Wiki
Official Website

From JDramaWeblog
Date: From 8.00 p.m., Sundays, 6 January 2013
Station: NHK
Cast: Ayase Haruka, Nishijima Hidetoshi, Hasegawa Hiroki, Goriki Ayame, Kuroki Meisa, Matsushige Yutaka, Fubuki Jun, Hasegawa Kyoko, Kudo Asuka, Ayano Go, Inamori Izumi, Tamayama Tetsuji, Ikeuchi Hiroyuki, Saito Takumi, Kitamura Yukiya, Nakamura Shido, Nishida Toshiyuki, Kanjiya Shihori, Ashina Sei, Ichikawa Mikako, Shirahane Yuri, Akiyoshi Kumiko, Koizumi Kotaro, Murakami Hiroaki, Furuya Kenji, Namase Katsuhisa, Ichikawa Somegoro, Kosakai Kazuki, Sorimachi Takashi, Kato Masaya, Kikkawa Koji, Odagiri Jo, Katsuji Ryo, Mizuhara Kiko, Tanimura Mitsuki, Oikawa Mitsuhiro, Takashima Masahiro, Matsukata Hiroki, Oguri Shun, Okuda Eiji

Synopsis: Niijima Yae (Ayase Haruka), who grew up in the Aizu domain, was a spunky girl despite her mother’s wishes that she be feminine. Because of anecdotes of how she barricaded herself with 500 women in Tsuruga Castle while being beseiged during the Boshin War, and fought with guns, she was acclaimed as the “Joan of Arc of the late Edo period”. After the Meiji Restoration, she became the wife of Niijima Jo, who had returned from America. She soon joined the Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War together with her Aizu comrades as Japan’s first volunteer nurses, going from warrior woman to Japan’s Nightingale.

Excited about this. After Taira no Kiyomori, maybe this drama about a strong woman will bringt the NHK Taigas back on track? I wonder why there wasn't a thread, yet. If you have any info you want me to add to the first post, don't hesitate and tell me!

It seems to have a nice visual look to it, which is my main complaint with Taira no Kiyomori, at least in the earlier episodes where they made everything look filthy dirty. But on the other hand I am worried about the strong accent they have Ayase Haruka speaking with. I hope they at least tone it down as it progresses, or I may not be able to bear listening to her speak.

The trailer is pretty watchable, hopefully it means the taiga will be good (haven't seen the first ep though). Taira no Kiyomori was boring even in the first few episodes.

The strong accent takes getting used to, I wonder if that's the Aizu accent? Happy to see Nishijima Hidetoshi  And Ayase looks good as the gun-toting Yae.

It's a Taiga drama. It will get English subs at some point. First it will need clean raws though

We're doing English translations for the manga, but...
A 50-episode commitment though... *shudder* Too much for me.

Thanks so much for starting this thread. I enjoy taigas in general, and this one looks very interesting (of course, I love this period in Japanese history, on the cusp between ancient and modern). Hope it gets some subs, but as Castellan pointed out, 50 episodes is a hell of a commitment!

I hope someone do the subs... If not I'll have to wait one year to understand japanese with no problem (after I get into my japanese classes which is in September/October) :'(((((((
I'm really looking forward to this drama... I started to watch Gou but still haven't finished because... it's long haha!
I really hope it get subs soon :')

I can watch most dramas without subtitles and understand basically everything, but this one is different. Their language is beyond my Japanese capabilities.

I really hope someone provides subtitles.

Episode 1 is up, with Chinese and Japanese subtitles. So if anyone is familiar with either of these languages, you can give it a shot.

It's a Taiga drama. There's a new Taiga drama every year. And it lasts the whole year.

I have no idea if this is any help, but I did find this: http://o.x0.com/m/9147
Sadly, my limited Japanese is of no use to do anything with it. Sooo... there you go!

It is my understanding that the NHK that airs in Hawaii broadcasts the Taigas every year, along with subtitles for the non-Japanese-speaking audience. I am pretty sure that this version will get uploaded here. It generally starts about four weeks after the Japan air dates.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

This drama is already being shown on Channel 480, which I thought was NHK...(Cox Cable. Southeern California) but minus subs unfortunately. Even tho the background history is known it would be much easier to have subs. The action is good but the various conversations don't quite come through at times. I think tonight was the third episode. Possibly the fourth ?

They updated the website and it says the first episode (with English subs!) will air on Feb 23rd!

I hope someone manages to upload it online, I'm really interested in this drama but it's way too difficult to understand.

The person who has this tumblr account writes a weekly synopsis of each Yae no Sakura episode. Today she posted for Ep 9. If you don't understand Japanese, but want to watch it anyway, I would recommend reading what she wrote before viewing each episode.

http://misaki-toyodome.tumblr.com/

This site seems to upload the episode just for watching each week.

http://video.fc2.com/en/content/2013030332qa2c0w/

This is the person who had provided raws for viewing each week. It should be easy to find each of the nine episodes on their page.

Episodes 8, 9, 10, and 11 of Yae no Sakura are available now, and have been for some time, on the usual Chinese torrent sites, with Chinese/Japanese subtitles (do a Google search to find, using the Chinese name for the series 八重之樱). Japanese subtitles are particularly useful for this series due to the heavy Aizu-ben. Nobody lately has been uploading the Chinese-Japanese-subtitled versions to D-Addicts, so you need to use the Chinese torrent WWW sites directly.

The NHK program explaining the background of this drama, the real historical Yae, is now available on D-Addicts as episode 133 of the program "Rekishi Hiwa Historia" posted to the j-tv RAW area. The real historical Yae was an amazing person, so you can immediately see why NHK focused on her for this Taiga drama.

Hey folks
Malfunction. I was only able to get an incomplete rip. Need the first 7 minutes of the show with hard subs for episode 14. Does anyone has the TV rip version and can post

I thought, lets try here as well

I just finished watching episode 18 and I am astounded that there is no mention of the role of Sakamoto Ryoma in bringing about the alliance of Satsuma, Choshu and Tosa, especially in view of NHK's Ryomaden from 2010. It's as if we are viewing a history of an alternate universe where Ryoma never existed.

I'm now watching this series. Another drama from Bakumatsu period. I also like the other Bakumatsu taiga dramas like Shinsengumi, Atsuhime & Ryomaden. :)

Plus the lead is Ayase Haruka! She's a great actress.
