[Discussion] PRICELESS (Kimura Takuya, Karina)
Synopsis
Originally a mid-level manager (Kimura Takuya) with a promising future in a big corporation and loved by his subordinates, the life of this elite employee changes dramatically one day. Having for some reason attracted the attention of the senior management, he is framed for a crime which he knows nothing of and forced out of the workplace. Even after that, he is assailed by a series of surprises and in one day, he loses his house, wealth and handphone until he is without a cent to his name. At his wits end, he comes to a park where he encounters two children. Learning from them how to survive even if he does not have money, he somehow weathers this crisis and discovers the truly important and priceless things in life. The good thing about him is that his carefree personality amazingly does not shift. It is not resentment and bitterness that become his driving force, but the love and help of the people he meets that enables him to keep go forward step by step. --JDramas

Same here! But i also like Karina . The story seems very interesting. Kimutaku has mostly a role as a "hero" or at least as a smart guy. Maybe his new role is more like a poor fellow?ilovejdramas wrote:Will watch this because of KimuTaku!
"he suddenly becomes the scapegoat of a crime he didn't commit. This results in him losing his job, family and money and he has to learn how to survive in such difficult conditions"
I would appreciate this kind of role. I remember an interview with Kimura where he said that he would like to act in an unusual manner.

Repost here the news that I read:
[RUMOR]
Takuya Kimura as a Poor Man in PRICELESS Drama is Unreasonable
August 24, 2012 by anon2805
SMAP‘s Takuya Kimura will be starring in an all-new drama this fall, titled: “PRICELESS“. The story revolves around a normal salaryman who suddenly finds himself fired from his job, losing everything he has, and starts living in streets. Kimura, who has played countless of roles, such as: Public Prosecutor, Prime Minister, and race car driver, will find himself playing the role of an impoverish man.
The drama is yet to start, but it has attracted negative reactions from fans. Even if it just a drama, fans think that it’s unreasonable for someone of Kimura’s caliber and superstar status to play a poor man‘s role. Fans are also worried if televiewers will be able to empathize with Kimura’s character since it’s a well known fact that Kimura is a millionaire and lives a comfortable life.
“He still commands millions of Yen for CMs. During his days-off, he goes out with his family for some surfing, or he can be seen playing golf with Goro Inigaki,” a person who knows Kimura stated.
Furthermore, some are wary with Karina playing the heroine. In fact, rumor has it that even Kimura showed disapproval when Karina got chosen. Although the reason is unknown, some speculates that it has something to do with Karina’s small face and height. Moreover, Kimura was vying for Ayase Haruka to play the heroine, but since Ayase has a full-packed schedule, the role went to Karina.
Lastly, whether the viewers will love the poor man KimuTaku, it’s yet remained to be seen.

I will see this drama only for KimuTaku , but also the plot seems good and see Kimutaku in a such role it will be funny. For the heroine I too would have preferred Hayase Haruka (Don't kill me now)
P.S. Sorry for my english

Kimura san can play this role with his eyes closed. He has played a poor man before with great effect. His samurai in Bushi no Ichibun was a lowly food taster and he was dismissed after becoming blind from tasting poisonous fish. This was one of his best roles. He is an actor and whether he is a millionaire or not it has nothing to do with acting.
I fail to see what his private life has to do with his professional appearances. Most well known actors and actresses are wealthy but it has nothing to do what roles they tackle.
Nakai has just played an autistic man in 'Ataru' but he is actually a very sharp and clever host and actor and MC of many variety shows. Also a very wealthy man.

And, a tiny report,
"It was reported that the outdoor shooting was met with hot weather, 23-san (a pun on Kimura-kun's character's name... xD) was sweating. Suddenly he walked towards the reporters on site, asked if they felt hot, then went back to the staff. Shortly, staff brought cold drinks to the reporters."
Note: Kimura-kun's character's name is Kindaichi Fumio, which is written as 金田一 二三男.

wow! thank you so much, Iris Zephyr, for so many updates about the drama so far.
I really can't wait for tomorrow's night....always love Takuya's acting <333
BTW, just read this on a SMAP's forum. Hope it's ok to share it here, quite an interesting thought about Takuya in comedic role.
(Credit: rz-jocelyn)
"Where professionals Osamu Suzuki-san and Tsunku-san, and a panel of the women's channel LaLaTV staff take a look at how the dramas in the previous season have matched their expectations, and rate their expectations on the upcoming dramas (including "PRICELESS"):
According to the panel, their highlights of the drama are:
1. Captain returning to Getsuku.
2. The pairing of Captain and Karina.
3. Captain in a comedy drama.
4. How Nakai Kiichi (a veteran actor) will add to the dynamics of Kimura Takuya and Karina, the two actor and actress of a younger generation.
5. (Hopefully) Captain will have some "kakkoii scenes" even though he's playing a homeless person.
I especially love Osamu-san's comment. To quote, "Kimura-kun's biggest weapon in his skills as an actor is, I feel, actually his comedic talents. It is actually very rare to find someone who excels in comedy, like don't we always comment that actors/actresses are really bad at it, but he doesn't get many comedic roles... "HERO" was a somewhat comedic role... There's been very few lighthearted dramas, so... And, since Nakai Kiichi is also really good at it, so I'm really looking forward to the exchanges ("yaritori") between them.""

I'm only one episode in and so far I like the drama but it really is bugging me how unrealistic the whole thing is (same as Keikan stated earlier):
Another thing is the granny who cares for the kids. Why does she have to look like a witch from an old bedtime story? I bet she will be the "good ghost" showing Ebenezer Scrooge the right way.
Most times I like the new comedic touches they make to every new drama but I get he feeling Japan's doramas are transforming into american comedy (the shows with the live audience laughing about everything).
Ill will watch this till the end since the first episode was quite entertaining and Kimura Takuyas acting is a joy to watch.

Continue watching and you will realize there's a reason behind it. But this type of plot reminds me of Korean dramas rather than Jdramas. I'm sure you take my hint if I mention stereotypical kdramas.quandary wrote:I couldn't even make it through the first episode.

Ok, but there are some inconsistencies that could have been easily avoided. Anyway I really enjoy watching it. Just saw the second episode and had to laugh out loud when I saw the Shomuni scene. Only the cat was missing^^ There series itself reminded me of Konna Koi no Hanashi althoug there are no real resemblances.
To anyone who really stopped watching the drama after the first episode: Give it another try!

Priceless has really met if not exceeded my expectations. Up till now, it has good mixture of enjoyable characters, enjoyable actors, nice story, "heartwarming" moments but without beeing TOO dramatic. Also, the story arc is quite interesting up to now and I am really looking forward, to what will happen in the next episodes.
Another big "plus" to me in this dorama are the actors:
- Karina is "ok" for me. I'm not a fan, but I think she fits the role she is playing quite nicely
- Kimura Takuya has accompanied me through the years of watching Jdramas. He starred in the main role in one of the first five doramas I've watched (Pride) and I guess I've watched one of his doramas nearly every year (not in chronological order though). Engine is still one of my favourites. I simply like him quite much.
- Nakai Kiichi was one of the biggest discoveries in the last months to me. The moment I saw him in "Saigo Kara Nibanme no Koi", I liked him. I really took to him in the first few minutes, and I LOVE him in this role. And the character he plays is also really nice.
After having watched the first few episodes, I'm really looking forward to the next ones.

I enjoyed watching Priceless very much so far.
Although there're some parts where I had questions like some of us here, I'll wait to see how the story unfolds till I judge it. Plus, I think it's the scriptwriter's intention to include many absurd scenes to create a comedic effect. I literally laughed at many scenes even though I had some question marks in my head while watching those scenes....haha
The balance between comedy and light-hearted family drama is very good so far. While many scenes called for a good laugh, at the same time there're several scenes that made me feel all warm and fuzzy.
Other than the story itself, the cast is a big attraction in this drama. I especially love the chemistry between Takuya and Nakai Kiichi. They can fine tune their comedic rhythm with each other so well. Both of them are very natural in carrying out comedic scenes, truly the star of the show! Love all the other cast in the show as well, awesome cast!

Love all the other cast in the show as well, awesome cast!

its too comical in reality, but im enjoying it.. kimura and the others did well, but certainly not kimura's best drama.. his gf's father seem an interesting new character..

don't forget one thing, dramas have simple plots that everybody can understand. they are written by oyajis and their main audience are obasan. I can imagine them watching the show while cookingdigitalcoconut wrote:im enjoying it, but its too comical..

How too comical ?
If you see a funny scene it has been written that way so the actors play it that way.
Good for the actors. It will then bring more emotion and pathos of any serious scene when that comes along.
If you want REALLY comic you might watch the Korean drama 'OOLALA Couple' Now that is comical verging on slapstick. But it is funny, as it is supposed to be. Very racy for a Korean drama.

I'm definitely into the comic side of this show.Peggy wrote: How too comical ?

I think there aren't enough funny hysterical shows anymore, like say,
My Boss My Hero, Tokkyu Tanaka 3 go or Yama Onna Kabe Onna...

i think editing mistake on ep06. the journalist suppose to see the new thermos before the electrical shop withdraw the sale, not after..

I think the electrical shops boss said something like "We have to remove them from the shelves tomorrow". The reporter was strolling through the shop in the evening, before it closed its doors. So I don't think that it is an error, I think they did it on purpose for more "suspense", so taht the reporter can find this thing literally "in the last seconds".digitalcoconut wrote: i think editing mistake on ep06. the journalist suppose to see the new thermos before the electrical shop withdraw the sale, not after

The working Japanese husbands normally give their monthly salaries to their wives and get pocket money in return, from what I know. Of course, it might not be the reason, but the wife (and daughter) werent very happy with Moai in the first place, so... it's a drama anyway. xDzorkaz wrote:How the hell can Moai san now be pennyless...?!
It was outrageous when I saw the news that fans were angry and demanding that KimuTaku cannot play the role of a poor guy. But when I watched it, I felt that he was too good and... civilised/cultivated(?) looking to pull off the look well for me. But of course, I'm not going to say no to eyecandy on screen.
Kimura san was a poor guy in Bushi no Ichibun. Nothing wrong with that role or performance. Good samurai attire. Lost his jpb as food taster.
Just because he is wearing a modern business suit he can still be poor after being fired from his job this time around
Some people in some audiences have no idea what acting is all about.
I think they think it is real life and they will bump into Kindaichi down the street one day.
Lol, that was just a personal opinion. I can see that many people are still enjoying the drama. It just didnt work as well for me. And it wasnt just because he's in a suit. Not like he was in a suit during the whole episode anyway.
I still love KimuTaku, just that this wouldnt be one of my favourite works of his. That's all.

I think it suits the plot though. Kindaichi wasn't born poor, it just so happened that he one day suddenly became penniless. Originally, he's a man who lived quite a decent life, having a secure job and good pay. So, I don't think it's gonna make sense if he'll suddenly look like a complete rag once he fell into homelessness.kangxy67 wrote: It was outrageous when I saw the news that fans were angry and demanding that KimuTaku cannot play the role of a poor guy. And if you consider the fact that he actually has a place to live and take a bath, etc., it's gonna be even more ridiculous if he looks like any normal homeless you find on the street.
Also, it's not just Kindaichi though, if you look at all the residents in that whole Happiness apartment, everyone looks too good to be a penniless (in your interpretation)
Thank you for a polite reply/explanation.taiyaki-kun wrote:I think it suits the plot though. Kindaichi wasn't born poor, it just so happened that he one day suddenly became penniless. Yea, that makes more sense. For some reason, I've had an impression that Kindaichi is going to look like a complete rag despite being just fired.
