Synopsis
One day, 46-year-old full-time housewife Aizawa Chinami is suddenly asked by her husband Hiroshi to give him a divorce because he wants to marry his classmate from junior high school days. This woman is his first love, Moriyama Haruko, now the editor of a popular female magazine. They had reconnected through social media and he wishes to start life over again. And so, Chinami loses everything that she has created as a housewife because of her husband’s infidelity. Then there is the issue of custody of thier son, Kakeru. While in the midst of a difficult divorce settlement, a depressed Chinami indulges in alcohol at a hotel where she has memories of happier times with Hiroshi and gets absolutely foxed. The next morning, the person who had tended to Chinami anonymously introduces her to a cleaning job at the hotel. This person is actually Takaoka Yusuke, the young general manager of the hotel. Almost two times younger than Chinami, Yusuke is the son of the owner of the global chain of hotels, Hotel Takaoka International, and goes by the nickname “Prince”. Is anyone else watching this? What do you think of the letters to the anonymous benefactor as the catalyst for Chinami and Yusuke's relationship?

I've watched the first two episodes, and then the fourth. It sounded like an enjoyable premise, and also very like a Korean drama in the hint of an older woman-younger man romance and the possibility that his cold, dark heart gets thawed.

From the comments on the official site, a lot of viewers agree that it is like a Korean drama.

I've enjoyed the acting by all the performers, especially the leads, so I differ with you on that. But I also don't see the sparks flying. I think that has more to do with the pacing of the story rather than the acting. How it changes to a romantic one so quickly in episode 5 is something I'm curious to see. Apparently alcohol is involved? Ah, liquid plot device....

I think they get better as the show goes on. I liked the part where Chinami had an indirect confrontation with Haruko and how it rocked the two of them to their core. The portrayal of a woman having to start life again at 46 feels realistic and I enjoy seeing how spunky Chinami is despite having her world turned inside out.

Alcohol gets to make a reappearance as the handy plot device. First Chinami in Ep 1, now Yusuke. He's known her background all along, so I believe Ep 5 is where she gets to learn about his complicated family and why he is not open with people.

Chinami's situation is surprisingly realistic! It makes her character very sympathetic, because she acts like a woman who has been betrayed but is determined to make the best of a bad situation. The confrontation with Haruko...the attention to the shoes made my heart pound with sympathy. And the lipstick-stained tissue! These details put me right in Chinami's position, feeling the same sense of defeat and humiliation.

I hadn't thought of that! You are right. It's interesting how Chinami and Yusuke, though seemingly very different, have a kind of balance. I'm beginning to see how they could have a fling despite the age difference, though I'm still not convinced either of them would be happy about it the next day.

The lift and letter cliffhanger!

The last two episodes solidified my perception of Yusuke as a poor little lost boy craving for affection and a soft touch deep down.

This reads like a Korean soap opera! And his m.o. appears to be cut losses before he sinks in deep. Everything around him is rather transactional. The drama has been entertaining.

On the other hand, Chinami's husband deserves a couple of kicks but so does Haruko for their selfishness.

Yusuke just breaks my heart. I really don't see how he can get a good ending in this, but maybe the scriptwriter has a trick up his sleeve. If it keeps following a K-drama pattern, then all bets are off.

I wish I knew! I've been reading Japanese bloggers in order to figure out the parts I'm not understanding. I'm half tempted to buy the book of the story in hopes of being able to read the letters exchange.

Is there a particular site where they post episode summaries? This isn' the typical drama I usually watch, and I don't know any of the actors, but I am interested in trying something different. The acting I've seen has been really good.

I loved the kitchen confrontation between the women, and cheating scum's call being put on handsfree.

Loved the scene too. But I couldn't hear the conversations clearly or even the expressions because the real-time screen quality is bad. Wouldn't it be funny if the women became good friends?

I don't think there'll be happy ever after. It seems too little time to deliver that with just 3 eps to go unless Chinami discovers that her letter writer is Yusuke in ep 7 and not some old man as everyone seems to think. Maybe a new state of self by the end of the drama?

I loved the scenes with Chinami and Haruko today.

I'm wondering if Yusuke's issues are going to end up conveniently forgotten, seeing how Ep 7 has developed. The big reveal looks like it will be next week and they still need to tie up the other ends.

Usually with these older female younger male dramas, the female is someone like Ryoko Shinohara, and um, who isn't gonna fall in love with her? But Chinami isn't particularly beautiful or confident, but nor do I feel like she is "lucky" that Yusuke has fallen for her. It's refreshing.

Yeah, first time I saw that, I was like

. Oh, Google, always translating Japanese into porn. It's really my main inspiration for taking Japanese classes, because I somehow never believed that a recipe should be translated to include steps that require handcuffs.

Language aside, Yusuke and Chinami have really great chemistry. NHK's drama has become more refreshing than ever, sadly no one is willing to put his/her efforts to sub these gems. Just look at Tsurukame Josanin's thread, it seems the only d-addicts' member commented there just doing monologues

. There's even no thread related to Makete Katsu

After doing some skimmings (ep.1 only), I think this drama is really promising. Looking forward to watch this drama after the subs are available

Even without subs, this drama is great. The relationships are easy to follow if you know who the characters are, and the actors all have to ability to convey complexity without someone having to actually say what emotions they are conveying. Oh, thank you, excellent actors!

I haven't looked at Tsurukame Josanin yet. I'll have to give it a try. I am liking the NHK doramas I've seen so much this past year. There's so many I want to go back and watch, too! I want to see all the Drama 10s and the Yoru Dramas and the drama specials! If only I had more time!

NHK is always so slow to capitalize on these things. There are so many requests for the soundtrack and for a DVD for this series. If they would release a DVD with even just Japanese subs, I would be parting with my money.

I've enjoyed this story so much. I suppose that I'd be disappointed with any kind of sequel, but I can't help wishing to follow the story longer.

I had a look around but couldn't find anything but I don't really know where to even look for Japanese subs. Not that they would help me LOL. I have the RAWS of this & it really does look super interesting.

Between the raws and doing my best to read the Japanese bloggers' summaries, I've mostly been able to figure out what happens. It helps that the acting is so good, and that there are a lot of scenes where the meaning is transmitted through expressions rather than words. I think I've watch each episode three times now, and plan to watch them all again. Someday, maybe I will be able to catch most of what is said!
