Taiwanese Woman Almost Loses Eyesight Watching Korean Dramas:
A 40-year old Taiwanese woman almost lost her eyesight after watching too much Korean TV dramas, it was reported today by Taiwanese local media. According to the report, this woman had recently watched Korean TV dramas for three straight days with only two hours of sleep in between. After realizing her eyesight had turned blurry, the woman rushed to the hospital only to find out she was diagnosed with malignant glaucoma that could possibly make her go blind.
The doctor who diagnosed the woman said, “If you watch TV or stare at the monitor for long hours, your eyes could feel excessive pressure that could at the worst case result in loss of sight.” He added, “I’ve been a doctor for over 20 years, but I’ve never seen a patient develop malignant glaucoma after watching TV dramas for over 70 hours straight. I’m sure this is the first time in the world as well.”
Hey, we all know K-Dramas are fun and addicting, but at least try to take a break in between! Now I wonder what drama she was watching made her go crazy!
So, What Kdrama are you currently watching?
There is a bit of unseen dramas in my computer: NToG, The Man Who Can't Marry, What's Up, Fox!, 49 Days, Dal Ja's Spring....theres more but I cant remember them but I will get around to watching them but for right now I'll start with Tamra Island. I will try and force myself to get some sleep. I read this article from Soompi and busted out laughing because its happened to me but I forced myself to get some sleep within the 24hrs :
@esmer
yep, I read that and got scared. but I am no where near that woman. I still have my sleep and time off my laptop.
do watch Tamra Island and tell me what do you think of my KID. I am re-watching Tamra myself. I can't help it. when I need something to cheer me up, Tamra Island and IJH to the rescue.
ps. Ignore the 1st 25mins of 1st ep and start from where life on Tamra starts. team Park Kyo all the way.
as for me, I am watching Scent of the Woman and Protect the Boss on weekly basis and I love and adore both. want to start on both this season's sageuks but after above news, I feel that I need to give my eyes some break.

I probably shouldn't laugh at this since it might be me in 10 years. It is a bit funny but sad. My mom used to always tell me not to stare at the tv too long or sit to close or I might go blind. Never thought it might actually be true! I guess I should start listening to mommy dearest's advice.
just finished: city hunter, pasta, once upon a time in saengchori, i need romance. All were good(real good) except I hated ending of i need romance. Still fuming.
currently watching: myung wol the spy, heartstrings, protect the boss, scent of a woman, my love by my side, tws drunken to love you and love keeps going and I am about to start the princess' man and chuno. I have put tamna the island on hold at ep 13.

Currently struggling with You've Fallen for Me... don't ask me why I watch this. >.< I know for sure it's not Park Shin Hye and the story. I should really stay away from school dramas, never liked them.
Also, I'm taking break from 1% of Anything... that's one challenge to watch, I tell you. But one day... one day.
And waiting for last subs for I Need Romance.
I'm really hoping for some good drama for the end of the year... I'm really frustrated with current ones. Some good melo please. ^^

I have had glaucoma for many years. Probably from childhood and never discovered until much later in life. Horrible headaches now and then. Had lots of surgeries and laser treatments etc. I have never heard the words 'malignant' glaucoma. Either you have glaucoma or you don't. If you have it then it is a lifetime disease and must be treated, usually with eyedrops, and eventually with surgery and so forth. Bright light is painful and suglasses are a must. I do aggravate it with watching dramas but my own doctor tells me that TV watching will not be harmful. I didn't tell him how much and how long I watch of course... Same thing with computer screen I suppose. You can definitely tell when you have used your eyes too long and then it's time for sleep.
Right now I am watching Scent of a Woman....Just finished Miss Ripley...just for the two male leads. One good young one and one good older one. Then I am watching the one about the Prince of Gogoryeo. It is one long ferocious battle from start to finish so far. Must say the Korean battles and duels are very vicious but mostly the main leads recover from the most deadly sword slashings very quickly !
Also have a couple of 1988 Japanese taigas on the go. Marvellous historical stuff. Plus I try to get into some of the variety shows. Not enough hours in the day are there?

Finished up Heartstrings, now watching:
Ikemen Desu Ne
Ouran
Drunken to love you (in short bursts...while it's good i think they draw things out).
Romance Town
Babyfaced Beauty (on epi 12 and I just can't push myself to watch more...)
And i have downloaded and want to start watching:
Princess's Man
Protect the boss (will start tonight probably)
Hayate the Combat Butler
Zenkai Girl

Perfect, just what I would like. But 50 episodes... I'd die.Ethlenn wrote:Damn, too much to watch for me. And Thousands Kisses started yesterday, aww^^
I feel like I'm giving up on new/airing dramas. Maybe I haven't found anything very good. But, for a while now, I think I have struggled to watch dramas. Am I getting old or something?
Im only watching "Protect the boss" , not interrested in any upcomming dramas (thanks God ), I have my eyes on old ones , Im currently downloading "Rebirth-Next" never heard about it before or read any review about it , Im not comfortable about the cast , and Im not sure I'll like it but I want to watch it so badly because it seems so interresting , confusing...and short!
It's the same for me. These days I'm struggling to get even past the first episode. I haven't finished a kdrama since The Greatest Love, and the only other drama I've finished this year is White Christmas. At the same time I've finished jdramas in just one night, so it's not that I've gotten tired of dramas entirely. I just must be in a kdrama slump right now.Neliets wrote: I feel like I'm giving up on new/airing dramas. Maybe I haven't found anything very good. They are realy trying my patience here by adding episodes. I want to start Warrior.. but not before they end it! Tried Scent of woman but too depresing and borring, have phase on historical staff with lot of fighting so started Return of Ilijame.. (Lee Jun Ki was more fun..) and wuxia (far, FAR too long this dramas..)
I went with Cinderella's Sister. It's a bit too melodramatic at times, but I'm at episode 19 and I have to say that this one feels more satisfying to watch eve when comparing it to Secret Garden or 49 Days. I'm not going to say that it's better than those two, but the depth just easily surpasses those other two.LSky wrote:Finished 'That Fool' yesterday. Going to figure out what's next.
I just finished Return of Iljimae, and Secret Garden,I'm currently watching Athena,Goddess of War, Crime Squad and Chuno. I dropped Myung Wol The Spy,because it made unconfortable since episode 08 and I'm thinking of starting New Tales of Gisaeng. But right now I'm getting lost so... I wanna finish what i started
Finished You've Fallen for Me and I Need Romance. I didn't fall for You've fallen for Me but somehow ended up finishing it... I Need Romance then again was awesome from the start but got messed up closer to the end and the ending was just... well, who have seen the end knows. I didn't ship that decision...
Dropped 1 Percent of Anything. It took all my willpower to watch even that 13 ep I managed to do. I really don't care about the rest 13 episodes. Not even for Kang Dong Won. Defiently the most dragging drama I've ever seen.
Thought about trying Scent of a Woman and Protect the Boss next.

right now, I am so envious of others because I can't even catch up with few airing ones I am following.
trying to keep up with
Warrior Baek Dong Su
Protect the Boss
A Thousand Kisses,
oh, and started Creating Destiny but am stock on ep5 for weeks.

Yes, indeed, it's written and played very nicely. But... somehow it doesn't get to me It's probably just me. I feel a little bit tired of dramas, I think. But at the same time I want to find something very, very addictive, something that would make me skip school to watch it. Just like it used to be in the past.Ethlenn wrote:I know, I was just trolling^^
Capital Scandal is good, really good. But kind of bitter under those suits.
I have downloaded He Who Can't get Married.
Oh, I just remembered - I am watching Protect The Boss, too. It seems a lot better than Lie To Me and The Greatest Love, because I don't plan on dropping it
But I seem to get affected and addicted at the beginning(recently) but then... it just disappears. Pow! And I'm thinking of dropping the drama. Am I even sane?
No, the drama starring Shin Min Ah and Uhm Tae Woong. Watched the first episode, good stuff so far. I know it's also known as Devil but my dvd's onscreen title is Lucifer so that's what I call it.Ethlenn wrote:Lucifer? As the MV by SHINee? Well, it's nice, but short, not even 5 minutes. Just to warn you^^

Yes, I suppose there is. As far as I know. Drama's title is 마왕(mawang) and I suppose it's from christian mythology, because 악마(agma) means Devil, too, but the word Mawang had some connection to Lucifer(which comes from christian mythology(the fallen angel of something), if I am not totally mistaken(not a christian)).shiofmedea wrote:if we are so into details, just for my interest, is there specyfic world in Korean for devil from christian mythology and it was used for title? If not is it just world for "evil force" from domestic one?
I think Ethlenn could answer you more precisely.
EDIT: And Ethlenn did answer already. Ahh, my slow fingers And yes, the drama is awesome! Writing, acting, Shin Min Ah, Uhm Tae Woong.... just great.
악마 (惡魔) is usually translated as evil spirit, the same as japanese akuma. There is also 마귀(魔鬼): magwi (jap. magi), translated as "devil".
There is a such a mess with names of evil spirits/kings and hierarchy, but this thread is not such a place.
And although mawang does have some christian provenience, agma (akuma) does not.
Oh, and Lucifer (meaning "light bearer") is thought to be The Satan, once the most loved by God among his angels, prior his falling from Heaven. But some other sources state that it's a reference to the babylonian king.

Well as far as i know there was no (angel) Lucifer in the beginning and it was just a translation-error from Hebrew to Latin(Lucifer was a babylonian king, who saw himself as a morning star, who will rise in heaven above all the other stars and was bashed in the end). So originally are Satan/Devil and Lucifer not the same being.
But then again this translation-error happend so long time ago, that its kinda deep rooted in the christianity, so that in the christian mythology are Lucifer=Devil=Satan.
All versions of this bestselling fantasy-novel ever(also known as the bible) are written by humans, so you can't say that one version is more true than the other(hence all of them are fantasy-books). Its just different. Well and the christian religion is based on the christian version of the bible, so its true for christians, that devil=Lucifer(at least this is my opinion on this matter and a lot of people would argue).

So in fact Devil title is just western mitology application to original title. So Lucifer as another intepretation is not so bad either (higher ranks kind of thinking here and guy was not so bad with his plotting, , this one was difficult - I couldn't decide on which side to be..)
BTW J-drama version (not so bad either) was called Maou so used the same way of separating meanings with akuma usually used for more common demons.. I love mitology

so were they made as response to expose to christian devil? it's interesting. I wonder why in this case they are not more simmilar to one from Europe or are they? Holland and Portugal roots maybe? but still if there are writen in kanji isn't it a little strange? I do not know how korean language deal with words from other languages..
Why strange? Every European country can be written in hanja (kanji). Hell, Australia as well.
As for the devil (Devil) I think it's just a borrowing of the concept, the etymology of it is also proves that as The Devil is the ruler, mawang and maou in their characters' meaning signify exactly this. Both Korean and Japanese demonology (especially the classical one) is very rich in terms of naming the evil spirits and beings. And, of course, after being exposed to the western ideologies, some of the concepts were adopted as well. Or translated into languages.
Truth be told, I never found even a one example of what we call the Devil both in Japan and Korea. The concept of the "fallen angel" is deeply westernized (Judeo-Christian to be precise).
So no, in Asian lore there is no such tragic demon as in Lermontov poem.
Read that.

we got sidetracked but thanks it was interested.. poem as well. I always liked one part of Paradise lost where Lucifer is stating his reasons of making revolt and later choosing Hell over praying for forgiveness.. I think Lermontov read it too.. I am here on Lucifer side but lost sides had always special appeal for me.. national character I suppose
I know I said I will start Protect the Boss and The Man Who Cant Get Married but last weekend I just shoved all those away and started What's Up Fox?. That has been on my list to see for the longest time and I just decided to go ahead with it. Only two more episodes to go then I'll catch up with the latest episodes of Princess Man and WBDS.
Startet to watch "Scent of a Woman". I'm not a fan of "serious"-terminal-illness-dramas and started this because of of Kim Sun Ah, Uhm Ki Joon and Seo Hyo Rim(yes i know she has almost just minor and mostly negative roles, but i like her). And i must say, this drama is very good and not overmelo, like other dramas in this genre. So thumbs up.
Also started Hooray for Love. I must say, that Le Tae Sung's acting surprised me. I saw him just in Playful Kiss and there her wasnt really good (or his character wasnt written too well). But i like his acting in Hooray for Love. Yes he overacts alittle bit, but in this drama its fitting.

I am watching Snow White. It's a drama from 2004. The quality really sucks(video quality). But the drama is quite light(at least for now) and fun.
And I found Top Gear Korea episodes. And you know what? I love it. The base of the show is the same as Top Gear. BUT, many say that Top Gear Korea is the best(of course right behind the British Top Gear) from the rip-offs(not really rip-offs but something like that). Top Gear Australia sucks, USA, too. They don't have any fun in them, but these 2 are quite good.

How come you like Top Gear, you are a woman after all
Some say....
Well, my brothers used to watch it religiously and I uses to hate it. But one time sat and watched it with them and got hooked. My brother saw Richard Hammond one time and I gave him hell of time for not getting his autograph for me.
Ps. They also got me into martial arts and sword fighting movies.
Crime Squad- I'm about half way through and I like it so far its really good but umm do they continue to kill people off for no reason? I mean first there was that traffic cop who was on the poster then they just killed her friend who joined the special investigations group are they going to kill his ex-wife or the reporter next?
Currently watchin "Can you hear my heart" , I thought the story was quite interresting but the acting really really got me from the beginnig that little boy (Kang Chan Hee) so cute and you can't tell that it's his first time !Jung Bo Suk doesn't stop to impress me ,hat off for this actor!
Nam Goong Min , wah his voice is irresistble , very charming !
I'm half way but not bored a all , I loveee it so far!

I started watching Joseon X-Files, which is pretty interesting (plus the lead is super handsome and bad*ss), and I'm thinking about starting Life Special Investigative Team. I'm trying to deviate from my usual rom-coms, and comfort myself with the fact that shorter dramas actually exist! Both of these have only 12 episodes and Joseon X-Files is only 45 minutes per episode. Yay!
Also, I'm still watching A Thousand Kisses. That's 50 hours of my life I'll never get back (hope it will be worth it!).

I think those who liked "Thank you" will probaly like"Can you her my heart:", both stories are very melo if you think about it but watching them give you warm and happiness!
