hi guys, not new to the site just never signed up before :)

thought it was time to join and get amongst it...I need a new show to watch, currently this is what I have seen and been absolutely addicted ever since to jdoramas!

Ikebukuro West Gate Park
GTO
Gokusen (season1 only)
Densha Otoko
Akihabara@Deep
My Boss My Hero (currently watching now)
Kisazaru Cats Eye

I tried Tiger and Dragon, got mid-way through episode one and haven't continued. Can anyone recommend anything along the same lines as these shows? it would be greatly appreciated!

Unubore Deka
Manahattan Love Story
(both because they're written by the same guy as KCE, T&D and share the same kind of humor)

hi^^

I am really looking for jdramas which are good/great but also have a strong ending. I watched most of the old ones already and cant really figure out why are there no jdramas with great endings anymore.

Yesterday I finally watched the last ep of Tsuki no koibito and thought "this ending is really good why are most new drams lacking in the end?"

genre is almost irrelevant except these "harem" school dramas XD

So plz help me where can i find strong endings like in Love generation, Long vacation even wedding planner had a great ending^^

Human drama - Mother
Politics - CHANGE
Crime - Maou / Tantei Gakuen Q / Majo Saiban

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (comedy, romance)
Kurosagi (law, swindling)
P.P.O.I (comedy, school, romance)
Itazura no Kiss (same as Taiwanese "It started with a kiss" and Korean "Playful Kiss" - I recommend one of the last ones, because the Japanese one is quite old and doesn´t have so fantastic actors)
Hokaben (law)

Those are just some that I found from my list.

Hello everyone.

I'm here fishing for recommendations. >_>

I loved Hana Kimi, Hana Yori Dango, Gokusen, GTO, and Kimi wa Petto. Lol, as you can see there is a trend of liking dramas relating to anime/manga, but I also thoroughly enjoyed Stand Up!! and am currently looking for something new.

Having it based in a school setting would be nice, but I'm open to others. Romance is a must (I'm a big sappy person), and I am rather fond of silly comedies. Any suggestions?

Silly school romance based on a manga - Mei-Chan no Shitsuji.
Music School - Nodame Cantabile

Partly school and romance but not based on a manga - Proposal Daisakusen
College and romance but not based on a manga - Orange Days

Romance and somewhat silly story but adults - Love Shuffle

Not school, not silly and not based on a manga. But at least they are young, lol - Tatta Hitotsu no Koi

I just finished Mother, and I can recommend it strongly. One of the best dramas I have seen. Deep, realistic, complex--very emotional and moving. It is definitely not light, casual stuff. The acting is really amazing, the characters multilayered. Keep tissues handy.

Post by netfinds4u » Nov 15th, '10, 17:56

The very first Jdrama I have ever seen was Shimokita Glory Days. I watched that just last week. That is how new I am to this, but I loved it. What other Jdramas are out there that are similar to Shimokita Glory Days? Again, I am seriously new to this. So be kind!

Gosh its so hard to go through all 200 of these pages lol! Seriously ^-^ But all jokes aside, I've been watching dramas for awhile. On and off but mostly on. Wondering what other people's opinions on the best j-dramas or specials from 2005-Present are? Anything OTHER than era, sports, cheese, bad endings or high school (gokusen, gto etc.) is good. Haha I like darker themed, funny, family, romantic (both dramatic and or comedic/romance) and or sad themed dramas. Doesn't have to have all those things but that's just to sort out some of the rubbish. This thread is great btw. Now if only I had the energy to go through all the pages haha PM or write to me on here I guess :D

Ryusei no Kizuna sounds right up your alley:
post-2005? check
dark? check
funny? check
family? check check
romantic? yeeaah a little, check
sad? check
dramatic? check
comedic? check
As a Kudo Kankuro fan, I am obligated to add that it's not one of his best, but it's worth watching anyway.

Hmmm...let's see...you could try Utahime, Zettai Kareshi, Unubore Deka, Mr.Brain, Shinzanmono, Guests of Room no. 0, Maou, Ohitorisama. These are all I can remember for now. You could try My Boss My Hero, it's one of my favorites...I've never watched something more hilarious. But, it's high school. So yeah.

Also, there are a couple of nice dramas, which are pre-2005 but amazing nonetheless - the Trick series and A Million Stars Falling From the Sky. You could try those. ^__^

Looking for some serious doramas. Maybe even Chinese and Korean ones too. I'm tired of silly comedy dramas. I thought Tokyo Dogs was going to be interesting but it turned out to be a comedy too. Anybody?

Hm, a prefered genre would be helpful. But these come in mind right away:
Mother (best drama in recent years imo), Soratobu Taiya (social), Hagetaka (business), Bara no nai Hanaya (love),

Just started watching a kdrama called Thank You today (little girl gets infected with HIV) maybe you'd like that too...

I'm watching Maou and while it has a subject matter that's more up my alley, the acting is atrocious by one of the leads. He overacts sooo bad.

I've watched Million Stars Falling From the Sky (whatever it's called) and 1 Litre of Tears. The latter is a great drama. I might watch Mother some time, but appreciate more suggestions for serious dramas geared towards men.

Maybe try Zeni Geba and Byakuyakou. Both are very serious and dark.

Zenigeba takes the cake as the most intense drama I've ever seen. The music can get a bit overbearing at times, but they get a better handle of it over time. The whole thing is only 9 episodes long and the final episode is crazy. Definitely worth a try, just be prepared to have your soul potentially crushed. XD

I can't think of many off the top of my head.

Seigi no Mikata (about two sisters) was really good. Other than that, the only show I can remember is Yasuko to Keiji (younger sister, older brother... Yankee Comedy). I never finished it... it started out real good, but each episode tended to end the same way. (little sister ends up in a warehous surrounded by thugs, brother saves her, ends up staring and love interest w/ crazy eyes).

Well, it's worth a watch, certainly. While I never finished it, what I saw was definitely pretty good, if redundant.
Cyborg Ninja wrote:Looking for some serious doramas. Maybe even Chinese and Korean ones too. I'm tired of silly comedy dramas. I thought Tokyo Dogs was going to be interesting but it turned out to be a comedy too. Anybody?
Personally, I find the best dramas tend to have funny moments. Not silly, just... light.
Anyway, you've already got some good recommendations.

Personally, I'd avoid 1 Litre of Tears. It's... depressing. Most serious shows tend to go in the "tragedy," direction, but there have been a number of pretty good ones.

I'd recommend....

-Shiroi Haru (Abe Hiroshi is the lead, so you know it's good).
-Orange Days
-Jin (modern doctor warps back in time to the Bakamatsu. Medical + Mystery + Drama = Good)

That's quite the list. I don't feel like cross-checking it, but here's MY crazy-long list of shows I've seen and really liked. Virtually all of them are winners, so if you spot any that aren't on your list, give 'em a try.

Trick (3 seasons + 1 special + 2 movies... 3 movies? 4? I dunno)
Shiroi Haru
Orange Days
Hero (Kimura Takuya stars)
Attention Please
Dream Again (really fun)
Gonzo ~ Densetsu no Keiji
Good Luck (romcom)
Kekkon Dekinai Otoko (a "straight" comedy w/ Abe Hiroshi... VERY GOOD).
Last Christmas
Seigi no Mikata (only manga-based anime I think is really worth the time)
Shinzanmono
Kisarazu Cat's Eye (silly/absurd humor)
CHANGE (...a heartwarming political drama about a kindergarten teacher who becomes prime minister? starring kimura takuya? That much info alone should make anyone want to watch it).
Jikou Keisatsu (really... oddball police/mystery show).
Satorare

Hi all, I'm doing a school project about bento and how it has affect Japanese culture.

I'm looking for recommendations on specific episodes of drama that mention bento at all. (Please tell me the name, episode and where the scene is in the episode) Thanks!!

XD
Thanks for the recommendations. I watched Zeni Geba and it is an excellent drama. It's well-acted by everyone, the direction is great, and the show leaves a permanent impression. There is a lot of symbolism there that has left me going back. One example is when a little girl lets go of her red balloon while money comes drifting in from the sky. I can't give any more examples without spoiling the show unfortunately. Thanks again for the excellent recommendation.

I have no idea about how to search jdrama based on genre - but you can look through the recommendetation threads.
My recommendation:
Stand Up!! - it´s even funnier than MBMH and well you have to see it to understand how great it is :whistling:
Yankee-kun to Megane-chan - I haven´t watched the jdrama yet, but I´ve read the manga - and it´s awesome

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Zeni Geba is terribly underrated so I try to recommend it whenever I can. It's not your typical trendy drama at all. It's not afraid to take risks and I agree, it leaves a lasting impression. Spread the word! :D

I need recommendations on more funny and touching family show... currently watching At Home Dad... and little chef... I like Abe lead role dramas... they're really good dramas...

I also need some recommendations on more comedy shows... I've watched My Boss My Hero... damn funny... and also Moteki and Kekkon Dekinai Otoko...

I also need some recommendations with psychological terms shows... such as Liar Game or Kaiji or Quiz Show or Maou... makes my blood boil... lol...

please do not recommed dramas that have too much romance and talk talk dramas... very boring...

thanks before... :)

Thank you Just Me. I will try your recommendations and will keep posting after watching.

I haven't watched Atashinchi no danshi yet. I heard it is a good show and it has got Mori hehehe I liked her when she was on Densha Otoko...

Give Hero and CHANGE a try.

I wouldn't call them touching, but they have a nice balance of emotional bits with comedic bits with... I dunno, "feel good" bits. It's impossible not to love either one.

Both, coincidentally, feature Kimura Takuya and Hiroshi Abe (whom you saw in Kekkon Dekinai Otoko).

And if you haven't already, watch Trick. It's also got Abe Hiroshi, along with Nakama Yukie (in probably her best role) and is... pretty much the best comedy/mystery show Japan has ever produced.

Cool. Thanx Mwulf. Will try Change and Hero.

I've watched all seasons of Trick. Pretty good stuffs. Nakama Yukie was ok, not really my favourite actress. Abe is still good though... hehe definitely my favourite actor. :)

I think Buzzer Beat's a really good drama for those who are looking for romance. I'm currently watching Keizoku 2:SPEC which is quite good!

Not sure if there's a categorization for it, but looking for recommendations on "hot-blooded teacher" jdramas. Preferably ones with english subtitles available.

I seen GTO, heard of Kinpachi Sensei, but seems there's no eng. subtitles for it.

Also, some jdramas set in the Edo period. But not historical drams where it acts out the historical events, but rather fiction stories that just happen to be set in the Edo period. (kind of like Jin)

I like Medaka, although she is not that hot-blooded. There are english subtitles for kinpachi 6, check on livejournal.

With fictionalized drama set in Edo period, actually almost all historical dramas are fictionalized anyway...

JIN - modern doctor sent back in time. Near the end I think it veers more towards the political and human drama, rather than the medical stuff. Very good drama tho.

Nurse Aoi - somewhat light-hearted medical drama, if you like GM Odore you might like this one.
