it's disturbing bcuz it deals with a really 'taboo' subject. i liked it, it's different. info at asiandb. i want to watch it again bcuz there r some parts that i didn't understand.
yeah, there were a few parts that was confusing to me as well, but ShaolinMunky was nice enough to clear up the gaps. not sure if i'd wanna watch it again. gave me enough of the shivers the first time around.
kali, if you post any info on the parts you don't understand, please put a 'spoiler alert' or make the text white or something. maybe someone can clarify it for you.

Maybe I'm a little de-sensitized. I didn't really find this film all that squemish or disturbing as some people say it is. Now, Takashi Miike's Visitor Q or Audtion were squemish. And Park Chan Wook's other revenge film, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, was more distrubing.
I have to say I loved this movie. It is, IMHO, one of the most complete films I've ever seen. Everything makes sense and is in tune with everything else in the movie. It handles the psychology behind the film really well. and even that "taboo" subject is a natural progression of the plot.

as far as i know, he didn't want to kill her. she practically forced him to let her go. as for the guy on the roof, i thought he was just some other guy.kali4niaguy wrote:Spoiler alert wrote:who's the guy on the roof? also, the bad guy's sister commited suicide with his help, right? he didn't really want to kill her.
well, ok, most of mine were answered by 'ShaolinMunky'. when the movie revealed who the girl was, i thought it was his SISTER, not .... well, you know. also, in his flashback, he reveals that he told the secret to another friend - while they're moving. who's that guy? is it the same guy who gets killed in the internet cafe??kali4niaguy wrote:jholic...what were u confused about!?
I Just watched it!! For me it lived up to its hype, Very good movie. I'm glad i didn't know anything bout it b4 i watched it. I know we all have our opinions but, Spike23 might just be the worst critic i've ever read. u don't understand y the movie got good reviews. It's because u don't understand good movies!!
Do not watch Old boy movie!
I just watched the movie Old boy. I was looking forward to it because it had so many good reviews and I never had the chance.
I finally decided to watch it 2 hours ago and I gotta tell you this is a one f**k up movie. It has two f**king incest in it . This movie is so disturbing and sick.
Yes, I agree that the story is creative and original but there's no need to put incest materials in it. They could have accomplished the same thing with other stuffs.
I was watching it with my family and when they revealed the incest twist I didn't even know what to do. It was some f**k up moment I had. I just wanted to get up and break the TV.
So my advice for those who hasn't watch that movie Do Not Watch Old Boy! if you are sensitive to incest materials.

Re: Do not watch Old Boy movie!
Don't tell people wtf to do, let them make their own decisions there are many people in this forum that have already watched the movie and enjoyed it and I'm one of them.haha land wrote:So my advice for those who hasn't watch that movie Do Not Watch Old Boy!
and as atomic says great job in ruining the plot twist
Oh and if the movie sucks so bad, then do you mind telling me why it won the Grand Prix prize at the Cannes films festival???
http://www.festival-cannes.fr/films/fic ... lm=4182985
the only thing I can advise is edit your post to warn about spoilers that you just blatently put up without demonstrating courtesy to the people who read your post
My advise: before you decide to watch a movie with your family you should check the MPAA rating information at IMDb.com to avoid such unwanted surprises.
p.s.: I also color-edited the spoiler part a little.MPAA: Rated R for strong violence including scenes of torture, sexuality and pervasive language.

S/he is just giving some warning to people. Not everyone likes really sick movies. Movies like Bad Boy, Samaria, Happy End and Old Boys are indeed sick and twisted. It's alright for him/her to express themselves and warn other people not to watch it, especially with family.
But I don't appreciate any plot spoilers either. Please refrain from giving away plot details in any posts, unless it's very prominently revealed in the subject header that this post/thread may contain spoilers.
Thanks for the edit job Moerk.
Re: Do not watch Old Boy movie!
My sincere apology to the people who hasn't watch the movie and got disturbed by the spoiler in my post. I was so heated that I totally forgot about that. I am really sorry.
Thank you for the edit MoerkJ.
I am not telling people what to do, it was an "advice" like a suggestion. That movie leave a bad memory in my head and I just didn't want it happen to other people.
As for the Grand Prix thing, if a million people eat my sh*t and say it's so sweet, so yummy and taste like heaven, would you also say the same?
I honestly think old boy is a sick movie and I gonna say it's a sick movie no matter how many award it won.
Thank you for the edit MoerkJ.

@haha land: Ha ha, now your family thinks you're pervert
Just kidding, I can understand how embarrassing that would have been for you.
First the color in your face turning pale white; your family starts staring at you, you turn bright red and rage in you head: 'YOU EVIL FILMMAKERS!!!"
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
I have not seen the movie but I think that revealing that the movie has a major plot twist so important to the plot that when given away it spoils the plot is kind of a spoiler as well.
Thanks for the warning, I might ignore it though, but thanks anyway

Come on, give it a break...I can understand why you opposite this movie. But i have to admit that this movie reveals the darkness of human haha...Who know how far we can go....Actually, alot of what you call "sickness" happen everyday. So....take it easy !!!. This movie is a masterpices of mind hahaha....Don't you see it's so sucessful? Cuz it makes you feel that way hahaha....

I just don't know what to do when some unexpected sex scene shows up when I'm watching a movie with parents, and it's just like... dreading every second of it, wishing it'll end as soon as possible. Remember watching Othello, and there was a fairly long sex scene w/ loud noise and my mom asked me, what is this? a porn film? LOL, anyway, haven't seen Old Boy myself, but thanks for the warning haha.
Visitor Q, wow that is a great family movie!!! I loved it. Brings new meaning to milk mustache. This is NOT a Disney movie kids. It's a Takashi Miike Mouse movie. He he.midnightblue wrote:Disney doesn't only make cartoons but also nice family movies. You might consider watching 'Visitor Q' the next time with your family; it's not Disney but a nice wholesome movie anyway.
OLD BOY is just a movie. If it shocks you, DON'T WATCH IT.
FYI, if you're watching a movie with your parents, and you know that they are sensitive, or you are sensitive to certain adult subject matter, don't watch an R, NC-17 or Cat III rated movie. Please don't be angry at the movie, it was your own failure to police yourself. You should have read the cover (or if you downloaded the film you bad creature, you should have at least looked it up on the internet). The cover clearly warns that it has content not suitable for all audiences.
I hate all these people who say you can't show this, you shouldn't show that. Well, don't protect me -- I'll protect myself. FYI the "secret" in Old Boy is pretty much common knowlege at this point. You may have been the only person who didn't know.
The ancient Egyptian royalty felt that they had to keep the royal line pure, nothing new there.
What about that Ryoko Hirosue film Himitsu (aka The Secret)? It deals with this subject.
And anyway if you would have finished the film, you would have seen Oh Daesu's act of contrition. It's not as if he revelled in his act. He was devistated by it.

Hey, two things, this movie is supposed to be a psychological thriller... it makes you think... and I'm not going to add spoilers. If you are not open minded, better stop watching movies. I don't suggest you reading Stephen King's books Anyways, yes, if you dont have an open mind then don't watch "good" movies. This movie was so damn good and it made me think from minute one until the last minute. It didn't damage my brain at all, you know why? It's just a MOVIE, only a movie, not real life people. Probably if I would find somebody I know doing stuff like that, then I would think it is sick and not moral. But this is just a god damn movie, a movie that actually makes you think, something I really really like. Most movies are just, sit in your damn chair or bed, watch it and bleh, doesn't exercise your brain. So people, just watch this movie because its DAMN GOOD, and be prepared to use your brain because that way you will enjoy it more ^__^.. Hurray for the ones with weak hearts!!!

Old Boy remains as my favorite Korean Movie to date. It is absolutely brilliant; the acting, script, directing and production is all brilliant.
I've seen Visitor Q, it was my first Miike movie, and I couldn't digest it well. I can't say I'll be able to watch another Miike movie, but I'm tempted every-so-often. Recently, i grabbed his silver movie...but i dunno if i'll actually watch it

Oldboy is an incredible movie.
Yes, it is disturbing BUT
it is an
ADULT!!!!
movie.
It does not pretend to be otherwise and they make it very obvious.
Only person you should be blaming is u'reself for watching it with your family.
Shoulda been more careful. I double check all movies i allow any younger
family members to watch. (within my control of course)

Haha very true indeed MoerkJ. I remember a couple of years ago, my friend got mullholland drive from me and decided to watch it with his entire family (parents and younger sister). I dont have to mention what an embarassment that was!
Anyway, I think Oldboy is for harcore serious movie viewers. You really have to get pass all the social constraints in order to view it. It is very well done and nobody should miss it. But it is certainly not the type of movie which you can watch and surf web at the same time heh.

SOO TRUE I AGREE WITH YOU. i thought old boy was an awesome movie! it executed the idea of revenge in an extreme and complex way.. i thought it was interesting especially the portrayal of guilt etc... and all the other issues that arose in the film.. it delves into realistic issues that does occur in our society today... we shouldn't shrug it off, but take it into further discussion and examine the message that the film was trying to send to its viewers. i'm a girl and didn't think it was disturbing, i've seen worse.. what's important is that this movie calls for deep analysis and its portrayal of an issue is one of the reasons why it won its awards.
anyways, i always PREVIEW movies by myself too to see if i could 'watch it with kids or family' And if the movie is decent then i'd want to share it with them! next time take precautions to prevent from encountering such an embarrassing situation
haha!!midnightblue wrote:Now that you mention it, it IS a family movie, it just brings a whole new meaning to the termwakopin wrote:Visitor Q, wow that is a great family movie!!!
I also think its is one frigtastic movie!! if it disgusted you so much, then i don't know what to say its only a concept. The two things that popped into my head when i was watching this is, "This movie is SICK" "Why didn't i get it when it first Came out?" I'm not old as hell, a genius or psychic, but i can practically guarentee that Any thing you can think up has been done before!! ANYTHING!!
Ahaha, I would shut it down right away if there's younger kids, but with parents or adults, it's more of a "what will they think?" It's just more awkward when you're around people watching a sex scene. I can deal with it and find it more acceptable when watching by myself or with friends of the same sex... went to a screening of A Clockwork Orange at school not too long ago, and for those who has seen it, there's not "pleasurable" sex, but more like artistically done sex crimes, but still whenever nudity shows up, I get uncomfortable and look around, wondering how the person next to me sees it or should my response be like their response... it's like you're trying to find what's "right" by examining those around you. I don't know, maybe I'll insecure...midnightblue wrote:Most of the time you get some kind of warning ahead, so then I go:' Anybody else wants some coffee?' These days It's hard to find a movie that you can watch it with your family and comfortably enjoy it together. I know there are a lot of movies out there without xxx scene but it's hard to fine one that attracts all memebers (old & young) of the family. Old boy has so many good reviews and none of them mentioned the "thing" so it slipped though my fingers .
I don't know you guys notice it but lately there are a lot of butt naked guys in movies. If I remember correctly sassy girl, 3 iron, old boy and I am sure there are a lot more. I can't remember the rest because whenever I see one I just turn around and try to take it out of my head . Yeah, I know you are naked when you take a shower. There's no need to show me your butt, geeze . I am sure I am wrong but I think Jackie Chan is the guy who started it cuz I remember seeing him butt naked in a few of his pretty old movies. His butt is the first butt I ever seen on TV . He's like a pioneer in butt naked thing.

Well you couldn't be more wrong!
I admin the some of the ending is alittle touche but it's a good movie - by far the best of all the Korean stuff they had on the festival where I saw it.

hahaland: i had mentioned oldboy in several threads. it's similar to a love/hate relationship. i love the movie for what it was - exciting, suspenseful, intriguing, etc. but i hate the fact that they had to 'go there' (you know what i mean).
that being said, i do admit that i was LUCKY enough to have seen the movie w/o my family. i don't think they would have taken it as "well" as i did.
yet, i cannot agree that it was a junk movie. you have to admit that american movies often try to avoid taboo subjects. just because the writer was willing to go there, doesn't mean we should fault it as a bad movie. it was a great film, but certainly one that should come with a huge warning sign - "NOT A FAMILY MOVIE"

internationally recognized film
although Old Boy was internationally recognized I find way to creepy for my taste. I couldn't get the film out of my head for a long time. I felt deeply disturbed just watching it. ... I know so many people who dig that film but as for me, never again.
Oldboy was a very interesting movie to watch. At times it was painful to watch, but it was never boring. The movie deals with contraversial issues; but I don't think it's any reason to turn a blind eye to it. The movie was recognized internationally. There are much worse things on the news than are in this movie. Children starve in third world countries while J-Lo argues whether Bentley or Rolls Royce is the best car. I don't think watching this movie will make anyone more morally evil. Get Real; it's just a movie.
I still don't understand why the title of this thread is "Do not watch the movie"; the starter of the thread says it's a great movie...

Get real?
Dude, no one said that the movie will ruin us somehow or that it's evil. Let me speak for myself when I say its creepy. I would rather be seriously bored than disturbed... And please, don't reduce us to tabloid reading bimbos just because we didn't enjoy the movie. As for the ghastly scene of starving children..?. THAT is surely not worse than forced incest! Controversial issues? Seriously dude, how often will find someone in a situation remotely similar to that of "old boy"? I can watch a "starving child" from CNN for a few minutes but come on!! that movie really messes with your head!! That's why it was so "interesting"!! It's interesting alright but don't tell us to get real when we're here to just discuss our reaction to the film.

Some people hated the movie because they thought it was apparently sick, you guys act like its real, understand one fact, that its all FICTION
Don't you guys see the genius of the movie? That it was done so well that it convinced some of you guys that the scene depicted was infact real and you felt disturbed in doing so.
Thats the beauty of film ladies and gentlemen that it has the power to convey and evoke the emotions that the auteor wants to convey.
in the same light how a romantic movie makes people all warm and fuzzy in the inside and how a comedy makes you laugh out loud(Why else are you guys watching all these dramas? ). Old Boy should be given some respect because one movie (that I might add, is not even real and is just a bunch of moving pictures in a box) some how managed to bring forth a darker side of humanity into prespective. Well ladies and gentleman the world is not exactly perfect, as demonstrated by that movie A Moment To Remember because dammit you'll never know how cruel the world might turn up to be

Re: Get real?
I didn't realize I was trying to reduce anyone to tabloid reading bimbos... but anyway, (SPOILER)none of the incest was forced. Sure they were dupped into doing it but that's not the same as incestuous rape. Sure we might be decensitized to starving children, but at the end of the day (SPOILER) The character in the movie got messed up in the head when he realized what he had done, but the children die of starvation. Sure it was an uncomfortable movie and it's difficult to sympathize with the main character, but, I can think of much worse things whether I'm desensitized to them or not.ladyroake wrote:Dude, no one said that the movie will ruin us somehow or that it's evil. I think the movie was well done. I think it became a little predictable (SPOILER)when you discovered what the villain was all about, but, I think it would have been harder to do it any better. The big fight scene was really great I thought.
The movie's definitely unique when compared to most Hollowwood anything. In my opinion a lot of the blockbuster Korean movies seem to be trying to mimic Hollowwood. This movie deserves praise at the very least for going its own way.
I guess what you're saying is the movie contains stuff that isn't the usual explicit sex orviolence that most people are used to. I can understand that.
I won't tell you to get real if you don't tell me not to watch movies because it wasn't a normal movie It's an art film, and I think we can all agree there are forms of art which aren't supposed to make you feel good. Texas Chainsaw Massacre didn't make me feel good at all.
Was the movie creepy and twisted? Yes. Would I watch it again? I might not, but, I definitely recommend people of not so faint heart watch it because it is fairly different from the regular run of the mill movies; it was still well done despite such a creepy and twisted theme.
Consider what else Korea puts out. How many sad, winter, december, november, sonata, tales are there? They're good, but, this movie is unique.
"Old Boy (2003)" Korean Movie; Your thoughts and s
I just saw this movie and i think it is very good. Never a dull moment and everything unfolds nicely and at a good pace. Anyone else see this? What do you think and any recomendations for other movies like this or just as good?

From a storyline pov i thought this movie was very original and suspenseful.... However, it was too dark for me!!!.... Many might disagree ... but I think korean culture has some kind of obssession for incestual relationships....a bit gross for me ... nevertheless, I can understand why people love it so much...I myself was completely taken by every detail of the movie... from the acting to the cinematography... the lighting...the set... basically everything.... i guess it's one of the best one alright... ... this Park Chan Wook certainly has some geniusly mess-up brain cells!!!!
If people like his style... certainly check out... Three - Extreme Measures... one of the stories was directed by Park!!!.... another quite interesting tackle on human relationships under extreme situations...not bad at all!!!

aside from the subjec that this movie deals with, I've noticed that alot of korean dramas/movies as well as japanese ones deal with relationships with much older people. (like older men and high school or fresh out of high school girls). Is this a very common thing over there? Recently alot of american stars have been w/much younger people too but I only noticed it happening recently..

Yup, i agree with those guys saying that this is a sick movie. It definitely met its goal to make you "never forget". I bet those who watched this thought about it for quite a while.. just like me..
Anyway, i'd also like to ask the same question.. why are koreans fascinated with incestuous relationships? Sorry if Im generalizing.. but so far, most korean movies i've watched deal with such kind of relationships..
Just wondering... Anyway, it's still a movie i'd recommend for you to watch.. it will keep you on your toes for an hour or so.

I LOVE the scene where the bad guy *care* for his sister' nipples. I don't have any sibling so I don't think I'm weird for loving that scene.
Overall the movie is amazing good in a weird way. So much detest acts between brother and sister; father and daughter.
I was taken by surprise at the end that after he found out who his real daughter is. He stll wants to live with her as a couple: "I know I'm worst than a beast but don't I deserve happiness?" here is my answer: "No you don't, you freak! She's your daughter for god's sake"

It was extremely shocking. It's no wonder many people consider Asia to be a producer of "extreme cinema."
The only thing is, it shook me so much that I have not rewatched it since. I just have the DVD hidden somewhere. I can't even share it with my family, which I do with my other Korean movies, because it will not be well received, especially by my parents.
