Hi guys. I'm a newcomer here.
Just finished Hotaru no Hikari yesterday.
Is there any other drama like this?
I want it to be funny like Hotaru no Hikari, with romantic scenes, but not too intense.

Happy thanksgiving all!

Hello.

I've seen Gokusen 1-3, My Boss My hero, Gachi Baka!.

Gokusen got a bit too Moral-ish at times... My Boss My Hero was excellent! loved it.

Can you guys suggest any JDramas for me?

You really shouldn't watch dramas based on ratings, but here's some anyway:

14-sai no Haha- 18.55
Bara no nai Hanaya- 18.6*
Change- 21.7
Galileo- 22
Gokusen 3- 22.5
Haken no Hinkaku 20.1*
Hana Yori Dango 2- 21.7*
Hanazakari no Kimitachi e- 17.3*
Karei-naru Ichizoku- 23.9*
Kuitan- 17.38*
Last Friends- 17.7
My Boss My Hero 18.91*
Nodame Cantabile- 18.79*
Proposal Daisakusen- 17.3*

There may be more but that's just from what I have. Stars are my personal recommendations.

How about these:
Nodame Cantabile
Kekkon Dekinai Otoko
Ikebukuro West Gate Park
Tiger and Dragon
Mukodono
Haken no HInkaku (it's an office drama, but a really funny comedy)
Hana Kimi

Can anyone recommend me some Jdrama that are comedy/romance with a plot similiar to Kekkon Dekinai Otoko (I loved how even throughout most of the story the main character seemed odd to the cast, but grew on them and some even started to fall for him)

Not sure what exactly you're asking for (character that nobody likes at first, but grows on everybody eventually?)
but you might try these?

Wedding Planner
Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru
Mukodono / My Husband
Trick series
Otoko no Kosodate (don't remember if it's subbed or not though)
Muri na Renai
GTO / Gokusen / pretty much any Teacher vs. Class school drama

Is that a serious question?^^

You should be able to find them here on d-addicts on the torrent page.
Just search for them per name and then click on the download button.
You need to use bittorrent.

Can someone suggest something similar to Atsuhime?

Post by Chalsie » Dec 18th, '08, 10:07

Hi! I am very new to Japanese dramas and was wondering if someone would be so kind as to suggest something similar to Atsuhime. My grandmother who is mostly bedridden enjoys this show but it only comes on twice a week and I would like to find something else for her to watch. Unfortunately, I cannot communicate with her because I don't speak the language and only understand a few words. I would appreciate any suggestions at all because there are so many shows and to just download random shows for her would not work as she is very picky. She doesn't do much all day and I feel bad every time I go to visit her so if you have anything to add please do. :o) Thank-you for taking the time to read my message. :o)

Everyone who is new to Jdrama should troll the forum first, most ppl added their favorites and why with description as to what kind of drama it is. So I think its best to start there. Sorry if I seem to come off a little rude but everyone keeps asking about dramas and everyone who replies list the same dramas thats on like every page.

I'm not a parent but learnt a lot from Daisuki about raising a child through different age stages, and what it takes to be a good parent. Karina's acting was superb. It's the next best crying drama i've watched since 1 Litre of Tears.
Now I seen Daisuki! It was as good as you said. Thanks for the tip! :-)

And I agree with you, this drama is on par with 1 litre of tears. For my taste this is a clear 10/10 rating.

All the scenes with Himawari was so super cute!

She will probably like most anything from NHK, and particularly other Taiga dramas. There are a number of them that have been uploaded to the tracker, but there may not be many seeders.

Other recommendations that might appeal to an older audience (most of the below are subtitled, but some are not):
Haru to Natsu / Haru e Natsu
Kaikyo
Junjou Kirari (starring the same actress in Atsuhime, Miyazaki Aoi. I'm planning on reseeding this series in early January)
Kita no Kuni Kara series (currently being uploaded by gryzze)
Yasashi Jikan
Chiritotechin
Dr Koto's Clinic series
Ruri no Shima
Daisuki!!
Hissatsu Shigotonin series
Sekai no Chuushin de Ai wo Sakebu
Tomorrow
Haruka naru Yakusoku
Ooku series
Tokyo Tower
Asakusa Fukumaru Ryokan series
Judge
Nihon no Schindler ~ Sugihara Chiune Monogatari
Hotaru no Haka
Hiroshima Showa 20 nen 8 gatsu mui ka
Nadeshiko Tai

Hmm.. a lot of the series I've listed involve WWII in some way or another...They are for the most part sympathetic portrayals, but I leave it to you on how sensitive she might be to it.

If she likes Atsuhime, you could try Hana Ikusa. It's in the same style, but it's pretty much a one shot deal. I usually watch more of the comedy/romance genre so I don't really have more suggestions. Sorry! The only other slightly more serious one I can think of is Tiger and Dragon, but it is also a comedy. Good luck!

As sure as I am of the fact that on one of the 142 pages there's this drama recommended, I know that there are plenty who don't have the patience to read them all...
So, I'll say this again:

LIAR GAME - The most inteligent drama I've ever seen. It doesn't surpass the Death Note's creativity, but I bet 100 milion yen that you'll like it :thumright:

If you need something fun and that will make you feel good, watch "Be Nice to People" that is being seeded right now since it is the JSOTW. I just finished it and I can't say enough good things about it!

Also, Akihabara@Deep is a classic that I seriously love as well.

Finally, Ame to Yume no Ato ni. Super good, though a wee bit dark in places since it has ghosts involved. Loved it though, esp the way they did the ending. Of course it helps that I have a huge crush on Ikki Sawamura. ^_^

Check out Code Blue-> I just watched that...its good pace with interesting view to hospital drama, although not really the best!

Seems you watched mainly school drama, you can try Edison No Haha, The Queen Classroom aka Jyoou no Kyoushitsu and Nodame

i like dramas with Yamashita Tomohisa and Kamenashi Kazuya

If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend 1 Pound no Fukuin (1 pound gospel). It stars Kamenashi Kazuya as a boxer who falls in love with a nun and it is a fun romantic comedy.

"Bara no nai Hanaya" was very good recently, but it's a series as well...

As for movies, "Hana Yori Dango Final" of course. And I think "Kimi ni Shika Kikoenai" was really sweet.

"Go" has romance too.

The only good romantic movie I've seen is HYD Final as someone already mentioned but the story happens after both seasons of the drama so you should watch that first.
I also liked Cyborg Girl.

Currently watching Liar Game, Ryuusei no Kizuna, and Puzzle.. with that said I'm looking for something a bit different.

I was wondering if someone could recommend one to me along the lines of My Boss My Hero and Hana Kimi, something putting the comedy first and with some romance on the side. Both of the shows had a really "feel good" quality to them and were really fun to watch.

Hopefully something to cheer me up, when dreading having to go back to school in a few days :( + bonus points if it's in a school setting.

Yeah!! I totally agree with YUKAN CLUB !!!

It's very funny and entertaining. It's silly and fun much like an animé. We watched it in one sitting. I did wish though that something developed between Yuri and Miroku, even if it's just an inkling like the story between Noriko and Seishiro.

We loved Gakko ja Oshierarenai too. It's like the Japanese version of American Pie with a twist. It's a realistic depiction of teenagers today, transcending even culture and language. It's hilarious and entertaining but surprisingly tackles deep issues like pregnancy, abortion, suicide and homosexuality.

I'm currently watching Yume wo Kanearu Zou. I was only planning to watch the SP because of Oguri Shun. The SP was just "all right". Then I saw that Shun made an appearance on the first episode of the renzoku so I watched that too. While waiting for him to appear, I found myself amused and entertained by the series' lead. Her story and rapport with Ganesha is much better than Shun's. She's hilarious especially in episode two when she attended a group date. She's really great!!!

We'll watch Nodame Cantabile next.

kharst wrote:I'm into comedy but if you say that its good maybe its worth a try!

You have any suggestions for romance/comedy...?
These are what I've seen so far:
1. Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (Ikemen Paradise) -- I loved this one. It started me on a whole downloading rampage. It's about a girl named Ashiya Mizuki who disguises herself as a boy and enrolls in Ousaka Gakuen -- an all boys school for hot (ikemen) guys. She does this to inspire her idol Sano Izumi to go back to high jumping. He quit because he got injured. Although he has properly recovered, he still didn't want to return to the sport. It's hilarious and outrageous and funny and romantic. You'll surely fall in love with the characters -- Ashiya, Sano, and the third wheel, Nakatsu. The entire supporting cast is a force to be reckoned with as well. This is a guarantee!!! (12 episodes + sp)
2. Zettai Kareshi - This is about a girl who's unlucky in love. In a fit of desperation, she signs a contract with a robotics company who gave her a prototype "perfect boyfriend" robot. At the same time, she finds love and success in her career. In the end she had to choose between the "perfect boyfriend" and real life. (11 episodes)
3. Yume wo Kanaeru Zou - You have to see the SP first before the series. It's about a person (guy in the SP, girl in the series) down on his/her luck and in desperation strikes a deal with Ganesha (Hindu god with many hands and elephant face) to grant his/her dream. The catch is, Ganesha will not snap his finger to grant the wish but teaches the wisher personality "tools" to achieve his/her dreams. The SP is just all right but the series is really funny. (sp + 13 episodes)
4. Itazaura na Kiss - This is the Japanese version of the Taiwan ISWAK (It Started With a Kiss). This came first. I didn't see the Taiwan version but I saw the animé. I'm guessing it's basically the same. The jdrama's premise is basically the same but the details are different. In the jdrama, Kotoko has been in love with Irie since their first year in high school. In their senior year, Kotoko decided to confess her feelings in a letter to Irie which he publicly refused to accept. That night, Kotoko and her father's house was burned to the ground leaving them homeless. They were taken in by Kotoko's dad's friends which turned out to be Irie's parents. So they live under the same roof. Romance ensues. (9 episodes)
5. Yukan Club - Six big shot students of St. President's School band themselves together to ward off boredom by solving mysteries. This is funny and ridiculous. It looks like an animé. (10 episodes)
6. Gakko Ja Oshierarenai - Touai High School used to be an all-girls academy but hard times force it to accept boys. Within the first few days of the school year, the first male enrollees (5 boys) get themselves in all sorts of trouble just by being regular teenage boys (translation: perverts). They are recruited by a polly pollyana teacher Aida Mai (Mai-chan) to join the Social Dancing Club she is forming by promising to grant them one wish (wish: she'd wear a sexy thong). Mai-chan also invites 5 girls (school outcasts) to pair with the boys. In every episode, we learn the baggage each of the members carry. This series tackles serious issues in a light, comical way. (10 episodes)
7. Hana Yori Dango - This is an extremely popular series. It has 2 seasons, a special and a movie. It's about a poor girl Makino who attends a school for the ridiculously rich. The school is ruled by a group of 4 extremely rich and powerful boys led by Domoyoji. Makino stands up to them in defense of her friend and subsequently gets harrassed by them. She is declared the enemy but inadvertently gets the romantic eye of Domoyoji. (S1 9 episodes, S2 11 episodes)
8. Gokusen 1,2,3 - An optimistic teacher, Kumiko, tries to inspire her students to better themselves. Instead, the students get into all sorts of trouble and bully her to make her quit. What they didn't know was that Kumiko was the heir to the Ooedo Group, a yakuza clan. All's well that ends well -- she earns their respect and she got them to graduate.
9. Binbo Danshi - This is about Koyama Kazumi who is a total knuckle-head when it comes to money. He gets into a huge debt because of his naiveté and has to borrow from a loan shark to pay back his credit card. The loan shark gives him alternative ways to pay back his loan by doing odd tasks. Along the way he helps out other people to get out of debt. This stars Oguri Shun. If you watch Hana Kimi and Hana Yori Dango before seeing this, you'll be shocked at Shun's transformation. (9 episodes)

I have downloaded a host of other renzokus but haven't had the time to see them all. I'll update the list once I finish watching.

Looking to watch something...

Post by ajennell » Jan 5th, '09, 13:18

Ok, I need some suggestions! I just watched two dramas in a row that just weren't what I was looking for and know you guys would have a better eye than I. I'm looking for something to watch either like Gokusen (I love the funny, kickin' butt, and secrecy) or something like Hana-Kimi, Hana Yori Dango, and Lunch Queen.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!
