[Discussion] Oh! My Girl!! - Hayami Mokomichi / Kato Rosa

Post by tsurashi313 » Sep 5th, '08, 05:11

I hope no one did this thread yet, if so just tell me. :]

A new Fall 2008 NTV romantic comedy is called "Oh! My Girl!!" ( オー!マイ・ガール!!).
Yamashita Kotaro (Hayami Mokomichi) was living a peaceful life as a publisher part-timer pretending to be a mobile phone novelist until two females suddenly appeared in his life. One is his six-year-old celebrity niece and the other is the little girl's stern manager. As he is forced to live under the same roof as the little prodigy, their differences soon manifest and disputes ensue. However, through co-habitation, Yamashita slowly comes to appreciate having a family and the warmth it brings, all the while developing a love-hate relationship with Takamine Mineko (Kato Rosa), the manager.
Other casts include Yoshida Riko, Tomosaka Rie, Okada Yoshinori, and Furuta Arata.

EDIT: This drama will probably be premiering on October 14, 2008.
EDIT 2: Massuki Fansubs will be hardsubbing this drama. Very awesome!!

I'm a big fan of Hayami no matter what I think of his acting. :D I'm very excited to see how it's going to be. And I'm hoping he doesn't have long hair like what he had in Zettai Kareshi. D: I personally like Kato Rosa because she looks so cute. I love her smile and I think they would have a pretty decent chemistry.

I just think his acting is kind of stiff. I mean compare to other Asian actors, it is pretty decent.

@Rori: I know what you mean, I hope I can watch this without dropping it. I dropped Zettai Kareshi (and so much more).... :-( because it wasn't really my taste. No matter how much I like the actor/actress, if the drama loses interest I just stop watching. D:

Sun, September 7, 2008 (1:47am EDT)

Popular duo Kobukuro will be in charge of the theme song for NTV's drama series "Oh! My Girl!!" The show was announced last month with actor Hayami Mocomichi in the starring role.

First, thanks for starting the thread. Very looking forward to it. It may not be interesting to the masses, but watching a hot guy tortured by a 6 year old brat is very my kind of fun!

Mokochan has improved tremendously, if this thread was started 2 years back, u have every right to make fun of his acting in the FIRST post and I wouldve agreed, but after ZK, even if it's not to your taste, he played a stiff robot perfectly well, and as u said, he is pretty decent as Asian actors....so dont u think it's kinda too much to feed into the stereotype of him being a 'bad actor' in the first post of his new drama when it hasnt even aired and we havent got the chance to see for ourselves and make judgements?! Dont you think?!

and since you r watching Hataraki Man, he came across nth stiff but a kinda annoying but super hot newbie at the office, right?!

^ dude, you opinion is yours, but my opinion, it's tacky to put it in the first post nonetheless, why bother feeding in the stereotype, ne? I'm not tryin, I'm just quoting some your conflicting words.

You do put up a very good argument, but I don't think it should really bother anyone unless you're the actor himself. I think it's tacky how people are always bashing on U.S. for whatever reasons but it's never going to stop. And everyone always have opinions on other actors/actresses.

My opinion about Mokomichi is like a regular comment. Since I created the thread, it is true that it's weird to have my opinion about it on the first post and it gives out a wrong start, but where to put it? It could have not been said at all but I did it anyways... It's true that the drama hasn't even started yet so I don't know how his acting will be but it's my opinion of him right now. I'm sorry if I offended you or that I am offending the actor and you don't like it. I'll delete that comment.

I don't think it's wrong at all to be honest. If you want to tell one person off for putting something "tacky" in the first post then you might as well send pm's to just about everyone who has started a thread on this forum. It's an opinion, by all rights, disagree with it, but that's all you can do. It's pretty damn nice of you to delete your comment for the sake of one person, if it was me, well it's my opinion and I'll stick it where I like whether people disagree with it or not.

As for Moko, I've heard a lot about his acting. How it was sucky before (I've seen him Gokusen 2, ZK) and am currently watching Brother Beat - where I don't think he's too bad, and certainly not stiff from how I see it. He's not the best, but he's pretty decent. As for this drama, I'm not a huge fan of any of the cast but I usually check out almost all the new Jdrama's of the season and decide whether I should continue watching from the first episode. I could as well drop this series as soon as it starts. Neither Moko, nor his acting has any impact on whether to give this a try or not.

^Okay, can't people just go to the wiki and read exactly what you just pasted down...? More convenient, I know, but then again I kind of did that too, but not as extreme.

Anywho, I'm thinking the drama will be starting on the 14th of October from what I can tell from the official website. :D I might be wrong, so correct me if I'm wrong. Mark your calendars anyways. xD

Not sure what the rules are for this forum, but normally thread-starters are quick reference points and will therefore list out the cast info, synopses, charts, links to caps, d/ls and the likes.

Anyway, there's going to be a PR video of this drama at the end of "Gakko ja Oshierarenai!" tonight, (22:00~22:54) which I presume will be airing their last episode either this week or next.

I don't have any feelings towards Kato Rosa. But I didn't find her acting very outstanding. But I'll check it out to see Moko ^^; The little girl looks kind of cute too. I would be all over it though if they casted the little girl from "bara no nai hanaya"

I don't consider Rosa an actress yet, she was decent in CHANGE with the role just suitable for her just being her pretty sweet self. She was horrendous in Jotei though didnt have enough/any teeth in her character as the lead of the pack there.

but in this drama, I don't think she needs to be dramatic and feisty (I hope) All that will be on the little girl's shoulder.

Cant wait though for the joyride!!

^ thank you thank you xento!! :) You are soosoo awesome to have saved and shared those clips!! I must say I was a bit put off when I saw those press con pics, Moco looked very drained and tired, but on film, with better lighting (and his gorgeous smiles) he looked much better! :) His voice is VERY attractive too in those clips!!

And yup fr your caps papamoco and little riko looked sooo adorable tog! Again reminded me of that chicken king show, moco seems much more closer to riko than rosa (whom I assume will have a bit of a romantic arch in OMG?! )

The chicken show... I love how he picked her up and sat her on his lap...it just all seemed so natural...and choosing the lil girl when asked to pick between the 2 wives. =P

There's no need to 'act surprised' -- low rating is a fact considering the time-slot, Moco's zilch pulling power and popular Batista airing concurrently. Perhaps it's more 'surprising' that you would bother leaving a comment when neither of the 2 leads interest you. :3 <____<

Hayami Mocomichi (24) attended the press conference on 6th October 2008 for his new dorama, Oh my girl!! in Tokyo! The drama airs on the 14th , Tuesday nights at 10pm.

He stars as Yamashita Kotaro, a guy who was living a peaceful life as a publisher part-timer pretending to be a mobile phone novelist until two females suddenly appeared in his life. One is his six-year-old celebrity niece and the other is the little girl's stern manager. As he is forced to live under the same roof as the little prodigy, their differences soon manifest and disputes ensue. However, through co-habitation, Yamashita slowly comes to appreciate having a family and the warmth it brings, all the while developing a love-hate relationship with Fuji Mineko, the manager.

When asked about the childish side of his personality, Mocomichi revealed that he likes toy figurines, and that he has over 100 of them at home.

In case you were wondering, that cute little girl with the dog is Yoshida Riko! She's freaking 9 years old.

Just finished the first episode, and it was cute! It's not the strongest first episode I've seen this season, but it was solid and enjoyable. Not a bad start to the series. I'm glad that Kato Rosa's character didn't annoy me.

My favorite relationships so far are the ones between Koutarou and Ann and between Koutarou and Yasuno (Tomosaka Rie). They seemed to be the scenes with the most heart. I like Ann a lot so far; she's pretty sweet for a "spoiled" little star. :lol I got a good laugh out of Kaga Takeshi's character too.

Does anyone else wonder:
If Hinako is seriously ill or dying? She really seems to love her daughter considering the flashback and her choice of who she trusts to care for Ann. Missing Ann's birthday all-together and not taking her phone seem rather worrying by contrast.

Yes, I do agree it's solid and enjoyable, but when dramas like LF r in vogue...ie scripts with frustrating plot twists thrown in for the sake of shock/entertainment. The script of OMG seems to be a bit lacking in drama.

I do like the last scenes in ep 1at that aquarium (same one Naito and Riiko went on double date with Soushi and his ex :) ) That was quite moving.

ryoko, I also sensed a melo drift in this drama. I was expecting it to be hilarious, but it tried to steer in a more touching direction than I expected.

some caps (vid fr massuki subs) of the first meeting of Koutarou and Anne:

Since LF wasn't my cup of tea, I'm okay with that difference. (I have a low tolerance for frustration in my dramas. *chuckle*) I really enjoy character driven dramas and many plot driven dramas, so I don't worry which is in vogue at the moment. Promo seems like there might be a bit more drama next week.

Ep 01 did go a more touching direction than I had thought it would too, but it did it well. I particularly enjoyed that scene at the aquarium too. There were a couple of developments that really surprised me in this episode, but they were pleasant surprises. I think the romance might progress differently than what I'd expected, and I like the way it seems to be hinting at the moment.

It was a decent start, liked it enough to keep watching. Rosa's character kinda annoyed me but I guess she's supposed to be a bit rough considering she's a manager in the series hopefully well get different sides of her character so that she'll become likeable.

Also have to say I liked the cellphone messages scene towards the end that she left for her mother. :-(

Gosh! I watched the second ep.... I must say some of the tad bugging excessive gestures of Mocochan were miraculously gone and he's almost perfect as Kotaru now. Gosh, he pulled the actor him out of somewhere! I was VERY pleasantly amazed. Annechan is superb too, and I must say they gave a bit more beef (still not enough though) to Rosa's character.

This is my kind of drama, not angsty, not frustrating, just like a cup of hot cider in a cooler autumnish nite! :) I'm a happy camper!

I got the chance to watch the drama after I figure out that massuki provide DDL..
It's really an enjoyable drama, the first Ep was really nice, Koutarou & Ann were really cute who they argue together.. The girl Ann is really not easy to deal with , I'm anticipatin more from the drama, it seems will be my best Jdrama from this season.. :lol

But wanna know is Ann's mother his real sister?

Hi there lucky kiss:
Ann's mom is Koutarou's stepsister, but they are not related by blood at all.
I do like this drama the best too this season, it's just the right balance of cute, touching and heartwarming characters for me without ever being over the top in the plot.

I'm still thoroughly enjoying this drama too this season. (I watched 02 raw, since I couldn't wait.) And it's near the top of my favorites list presently.

I think the characters are a big draw for me, and their relationships seem to flow well. It feels more natural than the other "cute kid shows" I've watched. It's able to use some pretty common plot elements for these kinds of dramas, but it manages to not take them to that cheesy, saccharine level that so many family dramas reach.

That hot cup of cider comparison really fits here for me too. It's just a drama that feels good to watch, and I'm loving that about it.

the drama is quite nice, even thoug i don't think it is that good. it is all thanks to mokomichi and an's secretary (dunno name) this works out (along with some others) but it sure is not the storyline.

mokomichi is just so great **** nude-scenes please!

PS: just kidding -.-

^ I think it depends on what perspective, this is not a plot driven, keep you at the end of the seat drama, nth is that dramatic, it is a bit cliched, but it is done well and with a very nice control. It is a drama that will give you a slight hug just when u thought nth is happening, as I did with both eps 1, 2. the ,'mundane'/ 'lack' of drama iscrucial for me to enjoy it since it kept the characters believable abeit some holes in the script.

I do think mokomichi has shown a lot of improvements in his acting even fr ep1 to 2. Riko, who is playing Ann is also superb, it's VERY easy for them to overact and make this into a total mess, but so far it's all good. :)

Yeah it may not be the best out there, but for me, it's the most enjoyable and heartwarming. I mean most of the drama this season has a heavy dose of melo in it. So far this is still a light joyride.

I have an uneasy premonition on y Ann's mom left though and put her in the care of Koutarou....
maybe she has some sorta terminal disease....that's y she wanna put Ann's care to the only family she trusted but never in contact all these years?!
I hope I'm very wrong, coz I like the tone of the drama to be kept consistant.

AND.... HAHAHA u have your wish heard (and many other girls'), maybe we've all been good. :alcoholic: Mocochan did have extensive topless scene in ep3:

I like this drama a lot this season, and it's refreshing after so many melodramas. (Not that I don't enjoy some good melodramas each season.) We have plenty of plot driven dramas this fall, and it feels a lot more balanced for me to follow some character driven ones as well.

One of my favorite things about Oh My Girl is how it can take a cliche for the genre but not play it up into a cheesefest. For example in episode 2:
We get plenty of warning signs about Ann-chan being unhappy and not eating. She even has moments where she's subtlely testing Koutaro, like when she tells him that she only eats that shark-fin soup from Roppongi. We already know from episode 1 that she didn't really eat that soup. Most likely that restaurant is a place she associates with her mother, so what she's really hinting at to him is that she misses her mother. It's done nicely through character actions that flow consistantly from one episode to the next. They don't clobber us over the head with it.

When she collapses, it doesn't lead into a big cheesy... "OMG. I must drop everything because Ann-chan collapsed" revelation moment either. Koutaro asks if it's serious, and when he knows she's not in imminent danger (and Mineko is there afterall), he continues his work before going there. While Koutaro is wrong about a lot of things in this episode, this is one case where I support his action. Working families have to delegate sometimes when a crisis isn't imminent. It also shows that differences aside he trusts Mineko when it comes to Ann's safety. It's a nice grey area of the drama that others can interpret differently too.

When he does arrive, Mineko is horrified at his not having rushed immediately to Ann's side. Her whole job revolves around Ann-chan's care, so it's hard for her to view it from another perspective. Unable to see his point of view and knowing that he's certainly contributed to the problems that have led to Ann-chan's collapse (such as his stubborn refusal to move into Hinako's apartment for Ann's sake), Mineko starts a fight that makes the situation worse.

It's not a world in danger kind of conflict, but for a series where the story goal is the illumination and development of characters and the bonds between them it's a well chosen conflict that was foreshadowed and given a solid payoff. And the fight isn't punctuated by unnecessary scenes to drive home what viewers already know.

When he does realize the error of his ways, Koutaro rushes off to the hospital. Again you get the danger of cliche, but instead of big crying scenes full of long monologues the drama uses restraint. Koutaro expresses his realization succinctly and sincerely, before heading off to correct his mistake.
OMG's able to use the cliches of the genre without making me feel.... "Ugh, what a cliche." It's not a drama for people looking for sensationalized plots. It's great for people who want a more heartfelt story about people, with a few trapping of the family/romcom genre included.

Episode 3 was my favorite so far.
I like how Kato Rosa's character got some needed beefing up. Her acting was much better in this episode for me. I loved how they pulled together early in the drama, so that we got to see the how supportive the people in Mineko's life (particularly, Koutaro and Ann-chan) are. Too many dramas just concentrate on long scenes of failure when a character is being watched by a worried parent who wants them to come home. This was more fun.
I think somebody out there has a charm for topless Mokomichi scenes, because it looks like there'll be another in episode 4:

I do agree with ryoko11 that part of what makes this drama enjoyable is that not everything needs to be spelled out.

Besides the budding father-and-daughter relationship, my most favourite sequences are between Kotaro and the chief editor. Despite the boss always seemingly in a foul mood and screaming like a madman, it was hinted in ep 2 that he sees something special in Kotaro that others fail to see. This was even more apparent in ep 3 when he sent Kotaro on a challenging task and guided him along. Tomosaka Rie's constant advice also reminds us that Kotaro has been treading through life all on his own, so both he and Ann who grew up fatherless were quicker to realise Otousan's love.

Am thoroughly looking forward to ep 4, especially the bath scene with Tomosaka Rie's addooorable son.

Preview looks soooo sweet

Hi xento, haha I missed u!! :)

Ryoko, that is a sharp, insightful review!! Thanks for sharing! I missed that detail on the shark fin soup ...and I have to admit I was almost ready to just watch OMG as a droolzfest. But for some reason ep2 was very endearing for me, yet I didnt spend the time to think more into it. Now that u've pointed it out, I do appreciate the drama much more consciously, before I was just unknowingly tugged emotionally, and I'm going to fess up I do tear up for some tiny stuff every ep, nth too strong a pull, but sth other than Mokochan is stringing me on.

And now I realize how well thought out and honed to detail this drama is. Everything is progressing in a very smooth steady determined pace, fr the plot, to the character's development. It may be cliched, but it is very well done that it was kept genuine throout yet not weighing the tone of the drama or the character. It's still light and a bit mindless, but we can choose to enjoy it with more depth if we wanna!
I do like the development of ep3, and the growth of the characters individually and the minute deepening of their bonds and understandings. What I appreciate most though is the characters still stay true to their premise, there is no abrupt sappy lightbulb moment like Toutaro will all of a sudden become totally considerate and caring, but we r seeing the development. The characters r not as cardboard cutouts as it appears if we spend the effort to the details. Annchan is a princess and understandably so, yet she is caring and loving too in a kid's kinda way when necessary. Toutaro is as xento said treading thro life alone since his parent's death. I cant imagine how devastating it was for him, yet although he's still a binbo, struggling, everything almost never goes his way, he is grounded and working with the cutest optimism towards his aspiration. (that must be the sparkle boss and Rie sensed) He's also prompt to admit his shortcomings when he realizes it, will try to think of ways Toutaro style, asks for advice to improve (luvluvluv).

I teared up at the scene at the bus stop, of just a short exchange of Toutaro and Mineko's dad. It's subtle, it's exactly what Toutaro will say, nth overthetop, but o so touching for me. Mocochan did great acting in that scene... he got around to me that longing and missing he has for his dad, again without too much sappiness. awwww
and isnt it sweet to see Toutaro, Ann and Biwa side by side?!

I also love Toutaro and Rie's relationship. It was again shown to us very subtly, but thinking of it, Rie is always looking out of Toutaro without being intrusive (and spending way too much time in the smoker's den as a nonsmoker). It must be some of those motherly protective instinct to look out for this young guy bumping along in this world. Yet u can tell though she's a senior to him, their relationship is easy and casual...that may lead to more. And what a cool independent lady! She kept things to herself yet bold and proudly stated she's a divorced single mom nonchalantly. hehe and any mom who is not frenzied fangirl of a Kstar....very cool!

The relationships between the characters are really nicely done. And the dynamic between Koutaro and the chief is very enjoyable. They have done a nice job showing the chief's mentor-attitude beneath the blustery exterior. (I have a soft spot for Furuta Arata in dramas anyhow; he plays so many funny roles!) The rivalry from Ken makes me grin. And the relationship between Koutaro and Yasuno lends some interesting possibilities to the plot.
I didn't really expect any potential love triangles going into the series, but it's very interesting the way they incoporated this. Yasuno is very attentive towards Koutaro. You can see her watching him in the office to notice that he's yawning and getting him that coffee in episode 2. She frequently encourages him about his cellphone novel, or is the one to give him the things to help him. And, wail, I made a similar joke about Yasuno's frequent appearance in the smoking room on my LJ, so it's great to know I'm not the only person noticing that. :lol

At the same time, they've been rather vague about whether Yasuno's feelings are attraction or maternal interest. According to a character info post I read on wordpress, Koutaro does have a mild crush on Yasuno. Some of the looks he gives her reinforce that to me too. So the whole thing adds an unexpected complication to the plot that I like very much, and from which I can see several possible outcomes.

Since the main premise revolves around his cohabitation with Mineko and Ann-chan, I expect the main romance to bloom with Mineko honestly. But whether Yasuno becomes a love rival or a dear friend with a sidestory of her own, it seems like they are pacing the story well presently and incorporating some nicely complex relationships.

I like it when the extended cast gets development in a drama, and an ensemble cast can be really great.
I'd expected this to be more of a kiddie drama with flatter characters to appeal to a younger audience before the series started. It certainly has some points that would appeal to a young audience (attractive young leads, adorable kids, some silly humor), but with so much being subtlely implied or written between the lines and the story direction so far... it's really not a kiddie drama at all.

On the subject of Hinako:
The possibility that she could have a serious or terminal condition has been in my mind quite a bit too. It would be a very logical in conjuction with her not bringing her cellphone and suddenly tracking down her estranged family to leave her daughter with. She seems to be a very loving mother in Ann-chan's memory, so it seems like she should have a substantial reason for whatever is going on.

Maybe she's going to have another illegitimate child and is in seclusion as a result, but I would think she'd have at least told her agency and Ann-chan in that case. Hinako is a bit of a mystery right now.

Tomosaka Rie's son in the drama is unbelievably adorable! No wonder she wants to work hard to see that smiling face. What mother wouldn't?

I watched Ep2 & 3 yesterday.. Ep3 was the best really :-), After each Ep, I can't wait to watch the next..wanna know why the neighbor ( the mother & her son) keep spying on Ann?
Ep4 seems really interesting but will Kotaro fall for Makiko.. I thought he'll fall for Mineko, or it's my imagination cuz I'm watching too much korean dramas?? :P

This is a good series. However...I hope we don't have to wait till the end for romance for the two main leads to happen. There really hasn't been any sort of indication that it will happen.

Arsenal, what I like about this drama is exactly it didnt push for relationships to happen. Toutaro and Mineko hasnt really known each other long. He's warmed up to living together with Annchan in ep2, then 'suffered' through the inconveniences with Mineko(and her dad) in ep3. He has bigger issues he is pondering (what is a 'dad' to a kid?! what's the 'job' description? What is family?!)

So, I'm enjoying Toutaro to explore those more urgent q first before romance set in. :)

I suppose you're looking off the DramaWiki for this series. I think that's only temporary for the moment. A drama will usually have between 9-11 episodes per season.
