Re-Timing mini tutorial.

Get a free download of aegisub and edit the subs. Click on the logo below. (MAC OS X and LINUX Supported)
Imagewww.aegisub.org

Image
Select Timing then click on Shift Times

Image
The above example shows 1.00 second shifted forwards
(Selection onward and Start and End Times must be selected)
Key in the timing and Click OK
Save the file.
It may ask you to save it to file extension .ass
remove the ass and type in srt and save the file. Overwrite? click yes.

Or go ahead and save it as file extension .ass
Make sure to remove the other srt file.
.ass file still works the same.

If this pops up...

Click OK (UTF-8.)

Look in the audio display when the first voice appears and note the time. Look when your asynchronous subtitles start and calculate the difference between the times. The difference is your time you have to remove/add (shift+/-).

It depends. You can retime a selection, in case the timing is off after a commercial or something. Or you can shift everything. Just try it out, you can't damage anything.

It doesn't work. :( The timing required is to delay it by 2 seconds but no matter what I do the subtitles still display according to old timing. The only time you see a difference is when I delay it by 4 seconds and then the subtitles become to slow. :( Help.

Thank you, blessed be the wayback machine. I did try to use it, but wasn't able to find this thread. It's possible I looked too far back in time.

When I try to combine the .ASS file I created via Aegisub the DVD program (DVDFab) didn't keep any of the font size & color changes I made. I tried doing an "export" instead of "save" to .ASS but still the same result... any idea how to export and retain your custom font settings? Thanks

Don't know if that's possible. I've only heard people used plain SRT files.
ASS files is usually used to style subtitles and the fonts need to be on one's computer to be viewed properly.

File menu -> Save Subtitles as... (if you want them as SRT)

looks like you are trying to hardcode subtitles? if you created .ass files with custom formatting you can mux them with the video using mkvtoolnix and saving as a .mkv file.. or use a player that accepts .ass files... like vlc player and load video and your subs.

if you are trying to hardcode the subtitles with formatting and encoding the video.. you'd need to use a program like megui that uses avisynth scripting. then used the textsub () command in your script. it should retain the formatting and hardcode (embed) the subs while encoding the video.

Ah... so it sounds like to retain my own subtitle formatting I'd have to have my video go through another coding pass, thus losing a generation of quality.
I'm trying to do lossless VOB rip from a DVD that has no subtitles, to making a NEW DVD with my subtitles.
Yeah, I figured I could always make an .mkv file with whatever subtitle style I want, but the DVD creation program I'm using (DVDFab) isn't very flexible as far as adding titles beyond an .srt or .ass file.

Thanks so much for your help.
