it's because you're not using a japanese font to display the japanese characters in the subtitles.

japanese subtitles =/= english subtitles

can't play srt subtitles in vlc or gom

Post by dudnaito » Apr 2nd, '10, 05:38

in gom it doesn't appear at all

in vlc, the japanese subtitles appear as squares instead of letters. I've tried every oher player known to man and they either don't appear or are squares.

I'm in japan, my windows 7 is japan regional, so i dont know what the problem is.

Help

the problem is that you don't into the subtitle settings to switch the font to a font that can display japanese characters. that is why you are seeing squares regardless of what your windows is.

i can't read japanese too well.

Could you help me navigate the vlc player version? Actually, could you help me navigate to change the language to english?

Also, is there any explanation for why gom won't even show the subtitles at all?

To change VLC to English, press Ctrl+P to open up the preferences. You should be at the インターフェース設定 (Interface Settings) tab by default. The top option in this tab is 言語 (Language). Change this from 日本語 (Japanese) to English.

Restart VLC and you should be in English.

Further to my last posting, I chose a Japanese font using preference setting and all is oK.
So those that have the problem with a green screen instead of pictures.
1. Download and install VLC version 2
2. Open 環境設定 select 字幕tab, leave the language blank ,Choose ユニバーサルUTF-8 as default encoding, choose DFPMaruGothic-SB as the font.
Shut down and reopen VLC and all should be ok
