yes it is possible that it is harmful.

sometimes in these cases, meta-studies are performed where they compare the results from papers that declare conflicts of interest and those that do not. the results of comparing the two groups of papers can be disappointingly different. now imagine the undeclared ones. so you have to check methodology yourself and be skeptical of everything on all sides.

and be aware that the "quackbusters" sites often have huge conflicts of interest.

check out watchdog sites like sourcewatch, and follow the references to make sure ok.
