Korean Music: Discussion

Post by Ethlenn » Jan 3rd, '10, 22:31

OK, I don't think there is a topic for a serious discussion on Korean music industry. I would like for everybody to introduce some new, pehaps, music to everybody. OST are discussed someplace else, but if you like to introduce an artist, feel free.
What is your favorite, what you dislike, and what is just weird

For those of you who are followers of Korean music industry, I wish more good music, and less scandals in 2010!

Music is definitely good. But their dancing seems weird to me. That`s only me, everybody else is enjoying their great performances but most of them are just wierd, in my opinion but I still enjoy them.

My favorite Korean artists are :
Outsider
Big bang
2pm
MBLAQ(one song but I just love it)
Tae Yang(He is from Big Bang but his solo album was good too)
SS501
and, but not so much, Super Junior. Sometimes I like to listen to like Kara, Brown Eyed Girls, cause they have more cheerful music.

If anyone wants to read Korean pop news, scandals and so on in english, then you should visit http://www.allkpop.com/

I like SeeYa. What has happened to their lead singer after the breast scandal?

I know I'm old, but the ones I like are:
Deli Spice
W& Whale
Yiruma
YB
Loveholic
Tearliner
Casker
Epic High
I liked Roora

Still, the main pop:
Seo In Guk (debuted these days, not that I'm a big fan of his, but still)
DBSK (one song)
SNGD (Girls Generation): just one song
Generally, I have troubles to distinguish between girls' groups, really.
And allkpop is a good website too.
Some others:
http://dkpopnews.blogspot.com/
http://www.dramabeans.com/category/kpop-music/
And of course soompi:)

Oh yes, and Seo Taji, but sometimes, not so often.
About SeeYa:
After Nam Gyu Ri left, they collaborated with Da Vichi and JiYeon from T-ara for the digital single "Women's Generation" that gained popularity because of the cheerful music and the motivational lyrics.
In October See Ya announced that they have new girl to made them completed as three members again that is SooMi. They released a new mini album "Rebloom" with the track title "His Voice". They changed from ballads and mid-tempo songs to pop dance song to show their capabilities to sing in various genre. This song is catchy on first listen with a catchy melody line, “Solgit Solgit, Holic Holic, Chullung Chullung.” Its fun lyrics and vocals flow well in this electronic pop number. (credits: soompi)

Well korean music is good to me.
My favourite artists are :
DBSK (so the fact they're having troubles with SM is killing me -_-)
W&Whale
Clazziquai
Epik High
SHINee
K.Will

I don't really like Girlsbands, I've always prefered guys' voices anyways. of course there's exeptions. :)

Nice selection, although Clazziquai has some projects I can't really listen to.
There are rumors that DBSK has disbanded, or is on the verge of it. Hope it won't happen.

No, soompi quoted some Japanese news on Japanese yahoo, but, to be honest, I spent 30 minutes on yahoo.jp and I found nothing, plus, their manager didn't confirm, so, I guess it's nothing. But they have problems anyway.

Only moments ago we reported on male sensation TVXQ, and their plans for disbanding in the new year. The source was from a Japanese article and SM Entertainment has yet to release a full legitimate statement, but things didn't look so good when Japan reported some unfortunate news.

A reporter said that tension within the group has become so high and bad that it's reached its limit, saying that Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu showed more passion to perform than the other two as they seem to have lost the will to go on. Even worse, the reporter stated that, "Currently the three have begun their activities with a new agency and the remaining SM members are forbidden from contacting the other three."

Plans for TVXQ was to apparently begin promotions for their last single BREAK OUT! on the 27th of January, and to release their last album on February 17th with one final goodbye concert in June.

However, SM Entertainment did not give a long detailed official statement but quickly replied to the situation by saying, "The reporter's statements are false. There are no plans of disbanding." But another source stated that, "Nothing has yet been officially decided."

There's much confusion going around and no doubt it's got fans very anxious. But could this be another foreign misinterpretation? Not too long ago, Chinese reporters said many false things about the the Hankyung lawsuit and this could be merely just another false rumor from a foreign country that didn't know any better.

We have previously reported that TVXQ is indeed breaking up, citing a Japanese source. SM Entertainment has denied the claims made by the Japanese article, and now the three members who seek to untie themselves from SME are also denying the claims.

According to Herald Business of Korea, representatives of the three members have stated "We have not heard of plans on the goodbye concert. Nothing is certain yet and we are still carrying on negotiations with the other party."

Thank you for the infos. It doesn't seem that good...
We don't even know what to believe anymore, that's too much. I hope that reporter is wrong.
Could it be the end of DBSK ? I can't believe it and I don't want to. :(

Good looking out. It means you have done well in successfully seeing and redistributing useful knowledge. Stems from the concept that receiver of said compliment has acted like a sentry of sorts and has displayed keen detection skills and prowess.

Got it now? 8)

I just got some of their music. I am curious to ho the sound. I am pretty picky about my hip-hop. Drunken Tiger, T, and Jinusean set the bar pretty high. But hey..let's see what they got.

Try Delispice ( yes, I know, I'm such huge fan of theirs, and YB, and W& Whale, especially their last single, it's sooo hypnotic).
You can try Last.fm for listening to different music before downloading/purchasing^^

OK, I have to make a confession (Gobaek, the most famous song of Deli Spice, no... wait, what was I?...), since yesterday I've been hooked onto three first songs from G-Dragon's "Heartbreaker". Dammit! Boy's got talent. And I did watch the videos.
I'm helpless...

I've been downloading a lot of korean music and music videos lately. I really like some of the new bands like B2ST and bands that are making a comeback like U-Kiss. I love all the upbeat music that makes me want to dance to it.

All I can say right now is:

Naega neol tteonagandaedo (ay)
Naneun jeongmal gandago (ay)
Jalsanabojago (ay) (lovers and haters)
Jigeutjigeutjigeutae
ppigeutppigeutppigeutae
Naesarangui bigeuge no way

And yes, It caught me so unprepared. I don't like boy bands, and that pop stuff (I'm not against it as long as it is good), but if I had to choose, I'd rather choose boy bands, cause I'm unable to distinguish girls bands. They have the same voices, looks, and music. And maybe it is my fault? Maybe I'm deaf and blind^^

Lee Soo Young

I grabbed her album, My Stay in Sendai, completely at random about four years ago. After listening to it for a couple of years, I realized how amazing it was that I still liked it just as much. Last weekend, I finally decided to grab a couple of her other albums.

It's weird. Not knowing much about Korean music, I figured Lee Soo Young was not well known. But last weekend I was reading that she was the number one ballad singer in Korea. Did that happen over the last four years or has it always been that way? And since when did I become a fan of "ballad singers?" :lol

I'm not that knowledgeable on Korean music, but I know a few artists that I have an affinity for:
- Clazziquai (catchy beats and perfect harmony b/w Alex & Horan)
- Yoon Do Hyun Band (love rock music)
- Loveholic (Ji Sun has a distinctive voice- too bad she left the band)
- Casker (easy listening music)
- Rollercoaster (catchy melody, jazzy melodies)
- Jaurim ( live performance of "You and me" is spellbinding)
- Epik High (nice beats and Tablo is hilarious)
- Drunken Tiger ("8:45" always gets me teary-eyed and made me a DT fan for life)
- Wheesung (he has a powerful, wonderful voice)
- Younha (Who doesn't like this cutie-pie?)
- K.Will (love his live performances; similar to Wheesung)
-Urban Zakapa (R&B songs are smooth)

As for boy bands and girl bands, I'm aware of them but I'm not a hardcore fan. There's just too many to keep count and my preference in music is different compared to the majority. It's not like I don't listen to them, but I don't put in much effort to learn more about the pop bands. They sure do have some eye candies in the boy bands though :p

@beardpapa: you wrote some nice list. Among all of them, Urban Zakapa is slightly not my taste. And after Jisun's leaving, we have Loveholics? Have you listened to?

I could add W& Whale (I just love the music imagination of W)

And actually I'm not a big fan of boy bands. it just happened I saw Heartbreaker by GD. And this is it. I'm not going to acknowledge myself in other boy bands though.
and as I mentioned, all girl groups look alike to me.

@ Ethlenn: Oh yeah, I listened to a few songs from Loveholics and it's good. But I still miss Ji Sun's voice

I just noticed your list on page 2 and I will definitely check it out. Thanks for the recommendations b/c I'm always curious to hear new, different music. I checked out W&Whale and they are really cool!! I'm a new fan :lol

As for GD, I was surprised too that I find his songs kind of catchy. His songs are good for workout music. I think my favorite from his album is "Butterfly" b/c I tend to like ballads over pop music.

"And this is it. I'm not going to acknowledge myself in other boy bands though. "
(kekeke) Really?!! Not even Big Bang or the handsome TVXQ?

"and as I mentioned, all girl groups look alike to me."
Uh-oh. You better watch out for the fanatical SNSD male fans. Run Ethlenn! Run!

Sort of advertising my site for all of you Korean music enthusiasts. You can download Asian Music on my site by clicking on image on my signature.

I'm a fan of all genres: pop, rock, alternative, urban, hip hop, dance, electronica, ballads, R&B, indie bands, ok all kinds of music.

I also collect music videos on youtube since seeing the actual artists sing makes it believable. As well as variety shows, though most are idol groups because there are more subbers for them. Ahh yah, I need subs to understand these songs so I'm just spreading the love for Asian music to other English speaking countries.

The music is definitely good. It's addicting. Plus the Kpop industry's conquering a lot of other countries charts. An evidence of how good their music is.

Still, the music is great, but when we talk about music industry in Korea it can be a little dangerous. I mean the mainstream, not bands like Deli Spice or Casker. It bonds the artists, and can turn their lives into hell. High music industry in Korea is a monster. Still, we owe it. Sadly.

OK, I don't like BEAST, I'm fed up with boybands, but just the video. This is how a modern video of this kind should be made.
I turned to Asian (well, OK, Korean, with few exeptions) music industry because they still know how to make a good music video. I think it's not true that MV is dead. It's because Western music industry run out of fresh ideas. I mean, come on, every European MV is so predictable either in dullness, or overexposing the sexuality. I've had enough.

I watched it sober and with the volume turned up!! :D So I'm still not a big fan of the boy band genre, but that video was decently cool.

Does this one qualify as a high-quality original video from Korea? I love watching this video! 8)

yeah, the best part: monster fixing his belly, mehehe. Even my imouto who knows nothing on Asian music laughed at Wannabe and High Technology^^

Another good site with Asian music:
Honeyjoo
What's most important - links are in most parts mediafire, not MU (which everyone not VIP hates).

Maybe this should have its own forum topic, but since we're on the subject of Korean music videos...

There's this one I've been trying to remember. (Possibly it's Japanese, but I really don't think so.) It is very, very reminiscent of a Lee Soo Young video with a dramatic storyline... even the video style is similar. So in the video, I think it's like a Daddy Long Legs story... with a secret benefactor and all. The girl keeps receiving dolls from the time she was young until she is grown from a man she doesn't know. The dolls are kind of creepy IMO, so I at first thought the MV was about a stalker... but no. I can't remember whether or not the Daddy Long Legs succumbs to a sickness in the end... maybe not.

Anyone recognize this video? It's driving me nuts.

Honestly, I like boy bands, but not the new ones that have been debuting. I haven't liked anything from B2ST, F-Cuz (WTH is this supposed to stand for?) eehhh there's more aren't there? Like you can tell which groups or singers I like by looking at my MV lists in youtube.

So many video subscriptions, but have to be choosy as to which Asian artists I should advertise. If the sound, rhythm and lyrics are typical, I'm inclined to just ignore that group for a while until they can show me their worth. Good example is After School, ignored them for a whole year until they came out with When I Fall. Catchy beat and lovely lyrics. Still though, their live performances are a bit weak.

About the mediafire VS megaupload, I think megaupload is a lot faster than mediafire. No you do not need VIP to download from megaupload. However, some countries are being blocked from megaupload. And there is a limit to # of downloads for megaupload.

@chrysanthemum: I don't think I know the video, but I'll ask around^^

Boybands aren't that bad, but recently they grow like weeds after the rain. F-Cuz stands for "focus", though I have no idea on what am I supposed to focus. I still like few songs of Big Bang and DBSK, they keep my mood up at 2 am in the night when I need to finish writing something.
Neighbors have probably other opinion on Korean/Japanese music, mehehe...

But, Epic High and Run!!

Video reminds me of Placebo "Bitter End" (if anyone wants to insult Placebo, refrain because I will find you!!), and Tablo had never so much make up. Dammit, I still love those guys^^

Boys have what they need to make it great. Just like that.
And just like that they were banned few times by radio stations, hehe. After a hesitation, I gave their new album 7.5 in the scale from 1-10. It's not [e], but what can I do?

Copied from PopSeoul:
Popseoul
60 girls to be exact, were rushed to the ER!

Why, you ask?
They fainted!
That’s right, folks. 60 over zealous fan girls exhausted themselves at the Big Bang concert on Jan 31st in Seoul.
Luckily, there were no serious injuries and the girls are just fine. Unfortunately for them, they missed out on a big portion of the show and made headlines for kissing the floor.
Although if I was this close to GD, I would feel faint too.
But not enough to hit the floor.

he he.

If I find a decent copy of it, I will upload it. Only if you want to...
( I love to tease you, mehehe) :whistling:

Alright, I'm not sure if the torrent has any seeds, but for DBSK fans: a concert.
If anyone wants, I can attach every week a torrent for Melon Charts or Bugs charts (with, like 800 Mb of brand new music), since it's not allowed to put music like this here, and I'm not going to interrupt my blog like this.
First:
Last Mellon Charts from April 30.
