I haven't been keeping up, but just recently discovered High and Mighty Color. A pretty new band out of Okinawa. They do an interesting meld of styles. They really took off after the addition of the cute lead vocalist, a cutey not unlike Mochida of ELT, but I think she sings better, and moves marginally better. Anyway, her singing is in typical Pop style (actually better than a lot, but that maybe studio work, haven't heard them live yet), the rest of the band backs up with a mix of sounds from classic rock guitar, snippet of J-rap, a little techno, rifts of what I call angry music which I dig & is what caught my attention (vocal & guitar ala Zombie, Static X, etc)

hmm... R&B, huh?

Chemistry, Crystal Kay, and Amuro Namie (a.k.a. Suite Chic) come to mind if you're looking for R&B artists to try out. Crystal Kay isn't even a japanese singer actually... she's practically the same as Amerie (half black-half korean)... but she sings in Japanese. The songs I like from them that come to mind are "It Takes Two" by Chemistry, "Koi ni ochitara" by Crystal Kay (this was the ending theme for the japanese drama with the same name starring SMAP's Kusanagi Tsuyoshi), and "Just Say So" by Suite Chic

I don't listen to Hamasaki Ayumi much so I dunno which of her songs sound R&B-ish...

as for Utada Hikaru tho, you can't go wrong with her first two albums but they sound more pop. Deep River started abandoning the R&B sound but you can still hear some traces of it in some of her songs. If you haven't heard it already, "Blow My Whistle" feat. Foxy Brown, produced by The Neptunes is a good song... I wonder if Hikki's new album with have any more R&B flavor to it... She's shedding her r&b roots, but at the same time, when I hear songs like "Passion" I can't really complain.

If you've got an open mind, you might wanna check out BoA's korean albums as they sound much more R&B-ish than her japanese albums. Her K-Pop Selection album really has some great songs, like "Day", "Realize(stay with me)", "Come to Me".
If it must be japanese, I suggest "Mega Step", "the Love Bug" feat. m-flo, "Feel the same" (everytime I hear this song I keep remembering how she cried in her L&H concert dvd during this song =/), and "Some Day One Day" feat. Verbal (of m-flo)...

Inoue Yousui is my favorite Japanese musician.

On a rather timely note, if you are interested in exploring the various types of
Japanese music, I suggest downloading and watching NHK's kouhaku utagassen.

Most of the famous musicians should be there, divided between Red team (women)
and White team (men). It's a loooong singing contest, I haven't seen the end yet so I
don't know which team is going to win this year :p

hmm... for japanese hip hop this may be of interest:

last month, Bathing Ape(BAPE)'s sponsored hip hop group called Teriyaki Boyz which consists of two rappers from Rip Slyme, Verbal (of m-flo... woohoo!), and some other guy, released their debut album "Beef or Chicken" (what a really cheesy title). What's more interesting is that they employed alot of big producer names to make the beats, like Just Blaze (Fabolous's "Breathe", Cam'ron's "Oh Boy"), Neptunes (need I give an example -__-;;; from Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback girl" to Jay Z's "I Just Wanna Love You" to Utada Hikaru's "Blow My Whistle"), and DJ Premier[a.k.a. Primo] (B.I.G.'s "Kick in the door", Jay Z's "Bring it On") to name the more famous ones. Some sites got Cut Chemist confused with The Alchemist (Nas's "Book of Ryhmes", Jadakiss's "Still Feel Me") (grrr!!!) in the production list and got me hyped up for nothing about that -__-;; I dunno if I can recommend it actually, but it's interesting to note huge japanese MCs spitting on tried and true producers' beats like from the ones mentioned above... oh yeah... On the Neptunes track, Pharrell spits a few bars of his own... give it a listen and u'd SWEAR he's doing his *best* Jay-Z impersonation. I could be wrong, but I smell a ghostwrite from Shawn Carter. They're signed to Def Jam Japan so I wouldn't be surprised.

for some awesome m-flo sampling of as KRS-ONE would say "real hip hop" give m-flo's "mindstate" featuring Sphere of Influence (LISA raps in this one under the name UNIKA.... no singing! =O), and "incognito" a listen... probably two of the best songs you'll hear with an american (mid 90s-ish old school) hip hop-influenced flavor (I think "incognito" was made pre-LISA underground when Verbal and Taku weren't signed by rhythm zone/avex yet). man... did Taku really produce these beats? man that guy's a genius... street, pop, intergalactic(lol!) this guy's got versatility! As much as I still like the new m-flo, god I miss old school m-flo too =(

I like the Teriyaki Boyz, all of the producers are amazing! and well the mcs can rhyme even if i dont understand half of what they are saying. They have a pretty good flow.
I am not a huge hiphop fan in general but i do like a lot of the old school stuff, and "beef or chicken" has a similar feel.

I was also thinking about kahimi karie, Takako Minekawa, Pizzicato 5, Buffalo daughter, and cibo matto, oh and also deerhoof (the singer is japanese i think the rest of the band is american).
They are all amazing! and for the most part women, and pretty experimental.
Kahimi Karie sings in french and english a lot, and her voice is the sweetest thing ever.
Takako is kind of like a dj and has some really fun songs and some very touching songs.
P5 is kind of like KK in that they like english and french and have been hugely influenced by music for the 50s and 60s. Its fun to dance to.
Buffalo daughter is 3 ladies who play with moogs and other stuff, i dont want to say electronica but i guess that is how i would classify it.
Cibo matto are two adorable women who i think moved to new york and make sometimes angry usually endearing songs a lot of the time about food.
and deerhoof is indie pop and has lots of weird lyrics and high pitched singing set to strange and wonderful instrumentation. I would recommend the song "bunny" and anything off of "the runners four" (their latest album).
ok so all of you know, i guess i would be called an "indie kid" if you were to classify me by my musical tastes, but i have a really ecclectic sense of music.
hope this makes someone listen to something and brings them happiness.

Crystal Kay is half African American (her father was in the military) and half Korean, although her Korean is self-admittedly pretty much non-existant... ^_^;;;
I don't remember exaclty, but she went to an International School (or something on a US military base b/c I remember her talking about the abudance of military helicopters always flying overhead

)...

She has a personal blog too that, last I checked, was in 3/4 english, 1/4 japanese..

Yeah, like mizune said, she's half african-american, half korean. So she's no different from Amerie, like I said in an earlier post. There seems to be alot of mixed-race Japanese in the Japanese music industry this past decade and a half. Amuro Namie (Italian/Japanese), LISA (formerly of m-flo; Columbian-Japanese), Monday Michiru, AI (Italian/American/Japanese) One of the dudes from WaT is half white/half Japanese. Arashiro Beni...
As for the speaking english well... I've noticed several of the newer ppl and up and coming artists in the Japanese music industry either are from an English speaking country, or went to school there for a period of time. The earliest artist I can think of is Utada Hikaru (but by no means is she probably the first) who was born in NYC. Manhattan to be exact. Two of the guys from Homemade Kazoku have US connections, Micro grew up in Kentucky (his english still sounds whack to me), and Kuro who was born in Chi-town (his english sounds good b^__^). hmm.. who else... Of the m-flo crew, VERBAL went to school in Boston, and DJ Taku Takahashi went to school in LA and did DJ gigs there too. Prior to that, they both went to the same international school. Dunno LISA's background, but it's more than obvious she speaks impeccable English. More recently, Itou Yuna, is from Honolulu, Hawaii. AI is from LA. Heartsdales duo Rum and Jewels grew up in Hartsdales, NY (Rum was born in NY). The white dude from DEF TECH is from Hawaii. list goes on and on...

Maybe in the next decade engrish will be a thing of the past....

oh yeah... melody speaks perfect English too... I think she's from Hawaii. speaking of blogs, she also has a blog that's written in english, then re-written in japanese below the English. Verbal of m-flo has a blog too. You can comment on both their blogs... Give em a shout out in English and they'll get the message loud and clear.

My fave J-Pop artists are Utada Hikaru & Namie Amuro.

Namie Amuro won me over STRAIGHT away with "WoWa" and I'm now obsessed!

Utada Hikaru's just in a league of her own. I love all of her music. Her english album "Exodus" wasn't brilliant, but still had a couple of great tracks from it: "Exodus '04" was amazing and I loved "Devil inside" & "Let me give you my love". Her song "Passion" for Kingdom Hearts 2 is great too - can't wait to hear the English version: "Sanctuary"

Koda Kumi's pretty cool, but very inconsistent. She drops a really hot track...then lots of crap. But she's damn sexy though!!! Her videos are just *Whooo....*

I can't stand 'em (too manufactured for me) - But...I do REALLY like 2 of NEWS's songs: "Cherish" & "Akaku Moyuru Taiyou".

I like the beat and lyrics to KAT-TUN's "I like it", but their voices sounds awful on it. The only KAT-TUN track I like is "The messenger" - because it is SO Japanese.

I just love the melody.

There's a few torrents around of a radio show called "Nippon Music Champ" that is mostly brand new hardcore stuff and is all excellent. Search isohunt to find it.

I've not found a band yet that I really really like, I listened to some Porno Graffiti, Dir en grey and miyavi which I wasn't really captured by, I've got Asian Kunfu Generation - Sol fa which I haven't got in to at all yet, the same with B'z - the best pleasure II and The brillian green albums -- none of the tracks have really caught my attention..

The ones I do like are l'arc en ciel, Hyde and Gackt and High and mighty color (though I've not listened to it a lot yet)

Does anyone have any others that they think I might like?

I don't really want anything too extreme rocky (like Dir en grey) but something more indie .. but not pop though I am thinking about trying out Utada Hikaru

So can anyone recommend some artist - maybe by picking out a single song so if I like it I can get the albums

I like Porno Graffiti. Something about 'em. I like when they do more elctronica stuff as opposed to hard rock though. My fave song from them is "Wakusei Kimi".

Gackt is aight...I guess.

He's good a really good voice. The one song by him I like is "Vanilla" - 'cos it's just straight-up funky.

You should check out Hikaru Utada.

Her latest 2 singles are really good: "Passion" and "Keep tryin'". As for her albums - I'd go for her last 2 Japanese studio albums: "Distance" and "Deep river". Another song from her which is really good is her theme track for Kingdom Hearts 1: "Hikari" (Japanese version) - "Simple & clean" (English version).

Namie Amuro's pretty cool too. She's more R&B. Her album "Queen of Hip-Pop" is pretty cool. She put out an album under the name Suite Chic. It was called "When pop hits the fan" and was a collaboration album with alot of Japan's more well known R&B and rap producers.

I have two of Gackts albums his first and his latest (Diablos) I think diablos is really good - though I didn't expect it to be his first album I didn't like much but some of it is growing on me..

I've heard a few songs by Utada (First Love, Dare ka no negai ga kanau koro (Casshern OST which rules) and Be my last) all of them are pretty good so I'll definitely be getting something of hers..
