I noticed that many of the older shows (like early 2000's) now getting released as DVDrips or TBS stream captures are in widescreen which makes me think that they had to be filmed that way. So I've been wondering when they started broadcasting the shows on air as widescreen?
Thanks!

Kinpachi season 5 is from 1999 and already recorded in HD and widescreen.

Maybe they were cropped to remove the top and bottom to make them widescreen like Dragon Ball Z Kai.

It's an interesting question. I'm mostly interested in older Jdramas, so I'm used to 4:3. I have a few shows from 2002 (Gokusen S1, Pretty Girls, Shiritsu Tantei Hama Mike), and they're all in 4:3 - so I think the shift must have happened after that for most productions.

If it's of any help, Sakura, which started on April 1, 2002, was the first asadora to be broadcast in HD format.
