Setting up a new torrent site. Who is willing to help? (take 1) [DISCONTINUED]

Setting up a new torrent site. Who is willing to help?

As stated in the topic Where should uploaders post from now on? a group of persons have been actively involved in setting up a new website, similar to this site! But in order to do so we need more persons on the team!

We are looking for, but not limited to:
1. Programmers.
2. Admins
3. Mods
4. archiveteam
5. Uploaders and other people who would like to contribute what they have stored on their drives.

Currently on board are, xiumeyourdubu (programmer) BaekSoo (Mod), AyoYura (SysOp), mi_sook (programmer & board member), tenkal (uploader owarai), myself (uploader & board member) and in2sky (designer).

In order to avoid any confusion the following is applicable:

Main rules will be:

1. No Movies
2. No Porn.
3. No asking for subs etc...

New site is open to the public, registration will not be necessary to download anything and above all it's all free.

If you're willing to help you can either PM me or send an e-mail to new.d.addicts@gmail.com..

ps dear all we need all asian countries uploaders....as well...

I really want to help. I would be delighted to contribute with some oldies I have stored on various hard drives ( Long vacation, strawberry on the shortcake, ai wo kudasai, iguana no musume etc..). I just need time to sort out the oldest I have burned on dvds, and probably, I need time to buy a much more bigger hard drive.

Since we have the chance to think about what we would want in a new site, is there any mileage in separating out the old and the new dramas? I have (I think) pretty much every drama and special Aya Ueto has appeared in (plus multiple other drama that were interesting at the time), but these go back years. Do people want to slog though tens of posts of old dramas to find the new ones, or should we (even initially) split to an old and a new section? If we restart from scratch, most people are going to post old stuff, as that is what they have on their drives and DVDs.

Old dramas are good to give the site 'flesh', and we should certainly have them, but they are going to be slow to up load and not going to attract a lot of downloaders, as people try and get the current stuff (and lots of people will have grabbed them back when they were current).

What is the situation with hardsubbed dramas? Do we need to reach out to the subbing group that did them (if it still exists) before we could upload?

lordnigelkeavy wrote:Since we have the chance to think about what we would want in a new site, is there any mileage in separating out the old and the new dramas?

There are lots of new people who are interested in the old dramas. People who did not get a chance to get it because of lack of seeds or people who did not know they existed in the first place.

For hardsubbed dramas, I think we can send a PM to the original subbing group and get their permission first. If there's no reply after a few days then I think it's ok to just go ahead and upload it.

PS. No movies allowed as this will attract (More) unwanted action. Basically it's similar to DA.

Great to see someone taking the initiative to build a new site. I'm sure there are many people who are willing to help you with this. But first you should state how the site will differ from DA and what your plan is in general.
How will you host the site and its content (tracker, hosting of torrent files)? What can you do to avoid cease-and-desist letter, legal take down requests? Who will pay for the hosting?

How will the site be organized? I think a forum like DA with categories for old and new stuff and from different countries would be enough. And with some rules for the naming of a thread, finding and sorting things would be much easier. But thats just my opinion.

I just want you to think this trough first. Doing things for the sake of doing things will bring us nothing in the long run.

My external hard drive is suffering from bad sectors so I won't be able to upload those dramas on it. My bandwidth is pretty good so I can help seeding as much as people need to. Just need a tracker. I also have a pretty good seeding ratio at asiantorrent so if there is something missing, I guess I can help leeching off that site.

I do think we really need a public tracker for japanese drama. IMO, the main reason is to popularize a standard format as we currently have several formats, with different timing. And as we now don't have a public tracker, I fear there will be too many formats for people to follow. And it's inconvenient for the subber to keep track of the different timing as well.

Hey everyone

This is my first time posting. I helped saved d-addicts files over a year ago. I'm also part of the archiveteam. We have a archivebot that saved most of the recent stuff i think.

I've spoken to Taido and here is my take on this topic.

Running a public tracker (any tracker for that matter) is not an easy task so think it through. As mentioned by @RetroHelix, there is a number of features that will need to be implemented in the new tracker in order to prevent/avoid legal actions. IMO, the best choice would be to run a semi-private tracker.

Here is my list of some of the important features/functions for the semi-private BT tracker:

Tracker’s CORE features

1. Semi-private
2. Can be indexed by search engines (helpful for new comers and members as well.)
3. Basic navigation for guest users.
4. More features (I’ll keep this private for now)

Member features/functions

1. Advance/full site access
2. Uploading/downloading ALLOWED
3. forum access
4. NO Ratio requirement ( Can be modified if needed - lets hope not xD)
4. Guest downloads ALLOWED?
5. More features - New ideas are welcomed.

I think i would start a new "Japanese Series of the Week" section (if it would fit on the new site) and help as a Mod. I don't believe i can offer anything more yet, besides to help seeding afterwards. Good luck with setting up a new site :thumright: .

Yay! This is awesome! The DA community is awesome!

We can look at the current private trackers (AT, JPS) around for ideas. (Maybe save the ratio part. I admit it's really helpful, but everyone on this community has always been helpful when asked to seed!)

About paying for hosting, many have volunteered donating if it were possible, so I dont think that would be a problem. Worst-case senario, JPS has classes among the members, and one class is Donor, which gives them special privileges. I dont think it'll happen here though.

About organizing the old and new dramas, how old is old? How new is new? It would be helpful adding the tag system. We could tag dramas by the years, or even by the seasons/genres/variety, like the fansub map. I think it'd be useful, esp if someone is searching for a drama, but not sure of the title. It seems like everyone's gotten along well without that so far though, so that could be optional?

Also, one thing. Probably not something to worry about now. But what about the subs? DA has been really convenient because both the torrents and subtitles are on the same website. We can leave the subs for DA so this site stays alive, and forbid subs on the new site? Probably something to take note along the way.

I can help with uploading/seeding too. Movies can probably be left to AT. AT isnt the only Asian movie source anyway. What's the diff between Mod and Admin, btw?

Some kind of filter/sorting system.
Like: View All | Cdrama | Hong Kong | Jdrama | J-TV | Kdrama | K-TV | Twdrama | Others ? |

| Complete (used for batches) |

A tagging system will be implemented so it will be easier to find your desired drama by year, country etc.

I'd be happy to upload as I did here. I don't have a lot of backlist, but if some of what I do have turns out to be needed, I can put that up in batches bit by bit (since my bandwidth wouldn't be good enough for the whole thing at once, sadly ;).

Well, to put it in simple terms.

1. Admin. It's like a manager. Being able to manage the server, write scripts to automate the tasks, server troubleshooting and basically have full control of the site / server.

2. Mod or the correct term Moderator. It's like a supervisor. To supervise the people. People who post spam or start flame wars will be banned. To ensure the rules are enforced and etc...

Of course there's more to it but you get the general idea.

I read that HTTPS would help or be better? I don't know.

I think we should have some kind of torrent system like asiandvdclub.org, with a ratio system, among other things... That way, we can reduce or eliminate the number of hit and run leechers.

Hi, I can help with programming stuff (backend), things like:
1. User
- registration
- forgot password
- login and remember me
- roles (admin, mods, user, etc)
2. Torrent
- create (drama cover, title, upload torrent file, etc)
- update/edit
- delete
- download and magnet links (only registered users or guests also?)
- filtering and sorting option (as Keiko1981 mentioned above)
3. Hosting Place
- Heroku, Bluehost, etc.
- 100% uptime (the server must be rarely down)
- VPS, NOT shared hosting.
4. Domain name
- This is the website url name (maybe t-addicts.com for torrent-addicts?)
5. Auto backups
- Back up all the database on different place, using Cron(Auto scheduler worker) or similar to that.

We need to use git to be able to work independently overseas and also we need to decide on what programming language we will use. Unfortunately, I only expertise in Ruby on Rails, I'm not confident with other languages :P

Also if there're front-end developer (basically the job is to make the web page design in html, css, javascripts) it'd be greatly a help. :-)

I'll sugest more features:
-Allow using external trackers. Allow DHT/PEX and magnets, as ratio is not used.
-Publish public backups of the torrent database (not user info, just torrents). Make it easy to fork (if needed).

I can help as a mod, to review torrent descriptions (ie. look for incomplete ones or with basic info missing).

Great, Just what we needed. Taido will contact you.

Backend is a MUST for a BT tracker!. As for hosting, I don't think we can go with something like BlueHost due to their popularity which makes them vulnerable to copyright take downs. We don't want our site closed by surprise. http://heroku.com looks promising though.

Here is what I have suggested. http://xtreme-webhosting.net/

Cheers,

I'm not sure if allowing DHT/PEX will be a good idea since it will be a semi-private tracker. This mostly so that we can protect ourself from the copyright trolls. Everything else will be taken into account.

Thanks!!!

I can help seed the J-dramas I have. I'm a tech noob, but once I figure out how to create torrents, I can probably upload a few videos too.

I would avoid anything that mentions torrents. If the 'Powers that Be' google 'torrent', we don't want to be top of the list and draw attention to it.

Ratio - I'm 50:50 on it. I appreciate the need to encourage giving back, but it can be a pain if you take stuff that no-one else wants (how to get the ratio back up). Points system helps to restore a ratio, but a pure ratio and ratio restrictions can be more of hindrance to users than a help.

I'm in.

Will it be one person running it? Will they be willing to devote as many years as Ruroshin has? What about the legal issues? d-addicts wasn't a tracker so I'm still confused with what happened (maybe downloadable links are now illegal?). I hope Ruroshin can talk with the new site creator if at all possible. Probably still safer making a new index versus a new tracker.

Things I'd like to see:
1. A more organized way of knowing who is uploading what in LQ/MQ/HQ for the current season. More organization = people will not be worried about stepping on other uploaders' toes.
2. Categories that d-addicts had, with an additional LQ/MQ/HQ category.
3. A projects section. We could have a torrent project for each year. An NHK taiga project. Ah, there's a lot we could do.
4. Yes! Tags!
5. Having Rules, Registration, and an Uploading Tutorial in different languages, particularly Asian languages. We could have a foreign language section of the forum, too. Torrent descriptions should (with exception of other language hardsubs) be in English, though.

Cool but I'm okay without:
1. Torrent bookmarks.
2. Rewards system? For various things - filling upload requests, reseeding, winning contests, etc.
3. If there's a new forum, embeddable video. A bigger inbox. Large images automatically resized to fit the browser window. But I actually really like the simplicity of these forums. It always runs smoothly and loads quickly. I don't want the new site to be bloated...
4. When logged in, settings that let me automatically filter torrent results. So for me, I'd only see jdrama torrents.

Please don't make it private. I love my private torrent sites and have no issue with ratio, but public torrents play a huge role in keeping dramas alive.

I might be able to help populate initially cdramas, sgdramas and twdramas that I have uploaded in the past. That said I might not be able to seed all of them. I can also upload batches of most of DoReMii's complete batches too. I just don't have as much access to new raws as I used to.

I am a little concerned there has barely been a mention of these since the torrents were removed. It's all been kdrama/jdrama concerns. Makes me sad.

Also I would like to see a "Thank you" button of some sort ala asiatorrents on each upload, that can be clicked and will add a person to a list of peope saying than you for a torrent or something.

Nice initiative, I hope it all works out, I have many classic doramas archived so I could help with uploading and seeding some major doramas of old!

But what guarantee do we have that the same thing that happened to DA won't happen to the new website?

I agreed.. nothing that mentions torrents. It could be N-Addicts for "new" and also no first letters such as A-Addicts (to easy to find).

make sure the domain is outside the USA. no dot.com or dot.net

I don't see a need for a new forum. keep using this forum (without torrents its safe)

Yeah I agreed. We can still use this forum, it's not like we're abandoning DA. and maybe can post the torrent link in DA forum?

Oh I can be uploaders. I have several old (90's/early 20's) drama, and I can help reupload them :)

hmm im also currently working on a torrent repository site using mvc.

have managed to get caching to zoink/torrage and magnet working on upload.

will most likely be just files list with comments support.
with editing/deleting of entries.

user groups (moderator to manage files list)

biggest problem will be hosting costs in Europe. either convert all links to adf.ly or add paypal donation.

Like others here, I've been a member of DA for a long time, even before I registered, so I have a lot of dramas burned onto DVDs. So, I can help with some older (and newer) shows. But my connection isn't that fast, but if it will help....

I'm ready to upload there.
But do we need to start uploading completely from scratch?

if there is a new torrent site I would like to join, but it is not that simple. I know someone who recently opened one for movies and it took months.

while a wonderful long term goal why not post the torrents you already have somewhere-anywhere, so they don't die. the trackers do not need to be changed.

the important thing is that people can continue their series with minimal interruption. btw, many older series are up on the various download sites. google the series you want.

I've been on d-addicts for so many years now, and would like to see if there's anything I can do to help your new project. I am definitely not a programmer, but would like to know what 1) admins and 2) mods do?....I am hoping that I can do something to contribute. Please let me know. Thank you very much for your efforts.

thanks @taido and all moderator in here, thank you very much to create new web.

i'm kinda confused using nyaa, so very glad that there will be new web just like d-addicts. :D :)

i am willing to help as uploader and seeder. for uploader i have several old kdrama that i got from Asiatorrents and other places. if need money to donate, i will be glad to help too.

thank you and thank you :)

ps : can i request . for new web, please make a new section for seeding request or shoutbox . i love d-addict because whenever i am asking a seeder for old kdrama & jdrorama , then there will be someone will help me asap and finished the torrent. it will be so much awesome if new web get new place/section for seeding request too.

also for new web, please make it simple just like D-addict, do not make it like asiatorrent. i like d-addict because the simplicity of these forums and the community. AT is kinda too many rules, too strict and no community ( different with DA).

thanks to all :D

i highly recommend adding a donation section
and maybe a monthly goal to pay for a server.
this system would be perfect.
or implanting some xdcc for dramas.
you guys are the hope of millions...

i still can`t believe this lost, it is same as megaupload...

I recently decided to stop uploading torrents because of the dailymotion arrests and such, but I wouldn't mind uploading some things to get the new site started. I have quite some drama's and variety (and I can get basically anything) on my hdd's, so I wouldn't mind filling in the gaps. :-)

I've been musing on the situation with old dramas (which I'm going to define as anything that people got a complete copy of, before the torrent section went away. could be from DA, could be from elsewhere). I see a few problems -

1) We don't know what people have that they could share.
2) While the External drive manufacturers would love us to buy new drives, I don't have a spare port to plug it into, or space on internal drives to hold lots of dramas.
3) I already have a lot of inactive torrents trying to build ratio points elsewhere. I don't want to plug another 200 inactive torrents into my client.
4) If you are after a 2009 drama, do you really need it to start immediately? I think you can wait a week, as long as you know it's coming.

Soo,
1) Let's take this time to build a list of what people can share, either from DA or elsewhere, and get something like the subtitle list (http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/subtitles.php). If it's not in the list, you have no hope of getting it, so no need to ask. A step too far may be to have a backside list of who has volunteered for what, so if they give up uploading, their files can be removed and no-one waits for a torrent that will never start as the only seeder is not playing anymore.
2) Important information for me is resolution, is it RAW only, or hard sub or sub files (can we include subfiles in a torrent?). I don't DL dramas where there are no subs, even though I would like to see them.
3) If the drama is in the list, check the torrent section to see if one already exists. If it does, down load it, try and start it. If no seeds, put in a seed request.
4) If no torrent, put in a 'create torrent and seed' request.
5) The person who then has the files can move them back to active on their PC, seed and (potentially) take them off their drives once done to free up their space again.

I like the idea of something other than the shoutbox, so that someone can say they will take primary responsibility for completing a seed request. I'm expecting that we have the same drama from different sources that are slightly different and getting multiple people to provide different versions of a file is confusing. Before, we had 1 primary seeder who provided copies that spawned out.

Current dramas are kind of what we had anyway, but old dramas I see as different.

I suggest you wait with all the lists. When the site opens and you want to upload something, make a search to check if it's been uploaded already.

Preferably post batches if you have a complete drama, don't post single episodes.

I'm looking at it the other way round. If someone wants an old drama, how do they know we even have it? Only other way is for everyone to create torrents of what they have and then wait to see if anyone does a seed request? Or have a general request box where people can ask if someone has a particular drama?

I think a lot of us are in the situation where we have dramas, but do not have the drive space to just leave them sitting somewhere in case someone wants them at some time. I certainly can't. But if I could make it active for a short time and then remove it again, that's more do-able.

My upload speed is only 350K but I have more than 6000 hours of K-dramas with english subs on DVD, mostly ~700K AVI, but I changed all the names so there are no credits to the original uploader or subber. I've been saving almost all of the dramas with subs. Keep me informed if you can use them.

Plus I have the original torrent files for almost everything I've download over the years.

godane's Web ARChive is from 2013-11-15. I'm not familiar with Web ARChive format. Does anyone know it it's possible to extract the torrent links? I see a text file with the Zoink links but that wouldn't be very useful without some way to match it to the contents. Also we really need the Torrage links because there will be some missing torrents on Zoink.

File structure
A torrent file is a specially formatted binary file. It always contains a list of files and integrity metadata about all the pieces, and optionally contains a list of trackers.

A torrent file is a bencoded dictionary with the following keys:

announce—the URL of the tracker
info—this maps to a dictionary whose keys are dependent on whether one or more files are being shared:
name—suggested filename where the file is to be saved (if one file)/suggested directory name where the files are to be saved (if multiple files)
piece length—number of bytes per piece. This is commonly 28 KiB = 256 KiB = 262,144 B.
pieces—a hash list, i.e., a concatenation of each piece's SHA-1 hash. As SHA-1 returns a 160-bit hash, pieces will be a string whose length is a multiple of 160-bits.
length—size of the file in bytes (only when one file is being shared)
files—a list of dictionaries each corresponding to a file (only when multiple files are being shared). Each dictionary has the following keys:
path—a list of strings corresponding to subdirectory names, the last of which is the actual file name
length—size of the file in bytes.
Erm, if we reuse all the old torrents, they will all match back to the old announce servers, not any new ones. And we should exactly match the torrent file back to the drama file, or I think it will go wrong.

Don't know about you, but I don't save the torrent files with the files I download. If people can accurately match the two, OK, but not sure it will happen for old dramas.

Me too, If someone can make a manual for upload. But my up-speed is just 3M. Don't know if I can help much.

Man I love you guys. I hope this goes well!

I can't do much but seed whenever this site gets up and running but I'll do my damn hardest to help out and spread the word to other people I know.

Some comments:

RATIOS:
I don't like ratios for D-addicts. Ratios are always hard to fulfill and there are very few uploaders for D-addicts. I think even without ratios the D-addicts community was very helpful.

REGISTRATION
Yes. Registration. Should be required. The torrents section should not be publicly accessibly without entering in your login and password. This also might help prevent the torrents section from being indexed by search engines.

SECURITY (encryptions, protocols and otherwise)
A more tracker should be more secure.

HOSTING
Should not be in the United States. Preferably a hosting site that has a good reputation with trackers.

Thanks.

Btw, will the wiki.d-addicts.com still be updated regularly?
It really helped me decide what to watch each season.

If not, there needs to be something like it.
