Soulmate (MBC, 2006)

Post by Ssang » Mar 14th, '06, 07:47

Here's a smart and sexy show. A Monday sitcom about various 20 and 30 yo singles, veterans in the dating scene, looking for their other halves or making sure. Think of the movie "Singles" or something like that but in Seoul to get a basic idea. First episode is out and can be gotten at various clubboxes which I'll post later. I don't know for how many episodes the show will run, and not that it's always possible to gauge the quality of a show from a single episode but the first has been quality to me. I like the writing, dialogue, cast, direction, and acting, as well as the music. Very nice OST so far.

MBC sitcom, 2006, airing Mondays from March 13-??

Cast and characters (as posted at soompi):

Shin Dong-wook (currently the mc for Show! Music Core): He plays the role of a music coordinator who is a sweet player.

Lee Soo-gyeong (played the character SeulAh in the drama 'Dear Heaven'): She plays the role of a reporter for some news company. shinDongWook and LeeSooKyung will show a shocking appearance as a couple.

Choi Pillip (He debuted by having a similar resemblance to BaeYoungJoon): His character went out with SooKyung for five long years...but at one point...he gets seduced by Min-ae....and gets into a different love feeling.

Jang Min-ae (appeared for a short moment in the sitcom 'New NonStop aka Rainbow Romance' (I believe): She plays the role of a girl who has a strong image that can seduce any guy.

Sang-Ah.

They skipped a week, so episodes will resume next week.

OMG again at pic #6 and #11... :O

Somewhere down the road, I hope there will be a subteam that will sub this show. :-)

Too bad I'm clubbox illiterate, but I shall wait for this on DA or wherever else.

Thanks Ssang for the info!

It's 소울메이트 in Korean which is literally "Soh Ool Meh Teu"

I get all episodes from creidesca's box, which I linked in the first post.

Episode 8 was really nice. Love this show.

Soulmate is anything but boring.

This week's episode (ep 10) was awesome..

I still don't know how many episodes this show is going for but it looks like it's coming to a close soon.

A few reasons why this show is really cool:

1) Besides the awesome soundtrack, all the characters are their own. Hong Yujin's character, for instance, speaks in a goofy but archaic, Chosun-era sort of Korean. Her bespectacled friend is a neurotic but hyper nerd with love ambitions of her own, and it plays out to comic effect, sometimes touching, sometimes sexual.

2) The editing is like nothing I've seen in a Kdrama. The narrative structure and the way the story folds out isn't linear. Consider how each weekly episode can have up to 2 "episodes". Ep 10 goes up tp ep 18 story wise. More than that, the way each weekly episode deals with its own issues ties things together, all at the same time progressing its larger story... which turns out to be about 2 characters among the 8 main characters. Those 2 are the "soulmates" but they don't know until later.

^ I hope someone subs it too for those who don't know Korean.

Next week is the last episode of Season 1. I don't know what goes on in Season 2. There might be an entirely new cast or something but it's good to know that there's a definite end point to the story going on right now.

So that's 12 episodes all together for Season 1, and, trust me, this show is good. There are some mystical elements in it too- dreams, prognostications, telepathy, destiny, sychronicity- that supposedly happens between soulmates, and in the show it's been played out to a great effect as far as the overarching story goes between two of the characters.

Ep 11, this week's episode, rocked.

Oh it surely rocked. This show is really addicting. Thesedays, it's rare to find a drama that has effect of totally pulling me into the show. I've never been more glad about understanding korean which made me able to fully enjoy this show. I just finished watching episode 11 and i barely started watching like 5 days ago. I'm so looking forward to watching the last episode of first season. Hope the second season come out with a solid story as the first.
By the way, thank you, Ssang to recommend this wonderful show. I wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for you.

Man, I hope that they DO follow up with a Season Two. This is honestly the only Kdrama that I've been able to watch repeatedly and still enjoy.

I didn't know that Korean shows did seasons. Don't they just go continuously, in episodes until the series ends?

from the episodes i have seen i have to say, this is really an outstanding series
compared to the other, more mediocre kdramas i have seen lately, this is a real highlight

if the show keeps up the good pace and style, i see "soulmate" becoming one of my favouorites.

and this one girl is so cute : ) the way she talks makes me laugh every time

^ Katostar, the song is "좋은 사람" ("Joheun Saram" or "A Person I Like" ) by Toy

The song is from Toy's 5th album from 2001. After watching that episode I like the song a lot. :-)

I'll upload an mp3 of it to megaupload:

Even if in the 2nd season there are going to be different characters, I think we won't have issues on get used/grow fond of them, I mean, with such a great way of fold the storyline, I'm dying to see it *ç*

nope no laughing track or studio audience. the way i see it, it progresses more like a comedy-drama than a sitcom.. this is really good, intelligent, witty stuff.. and the soundtrack consisting of mostly english songs is awesome too... what is inexplicable though, is why such a great drama isn't getting more attention!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SHOW!

Post by Filmfan » Mar 8th, '07, 07:03

Okay, just finished the kdrama show called, "Soulmates", and I'd like to say--Awesome! For those who haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it. Here's why:

Korean dramas are usually predictable, formulaic, melodramatic and so very, very, very long--and I should know I've watched just about umpteenth of them. But can you blame me? First they hook you with a good beginning: something light, funny, possibly a great start to an interesting romantic comedy (Am not into drama/romance). Then about 5-7 episodes later it shifts and goes into just what I don't want to see--Drama/Romance! And you're thinking, "What the? I've been bamboozled!" And there's nothing you can do about it cause you've basically argued with yourself that you've already invested time and effort in this thing anyway, might as well know how it ends, but then it hits you, "What, friggin 24 more episodes to go?!" Can I really stand all the crying in this thing? Seriously, I swear these Korean actresses have had their tears milked to the last drop that one of these days I won't be shocked if I saw them promoting the prescription drug Restasis [prescription drug for dry eyes] on tv. Instead of having to feel their pain and cry with them, I have a tendency to laugh instead.

But then all is not lost. Life has not ended. Korean drama has redeemed itself and I am actually feeling all giddy inside with anticipation for the next season. Finally! Goodness, how many kdramas I had to undergo to find this gem.

GOOD THINGS ABOUT THE SHOW:

1. Quite original. Has a lot of unpredictable moments. Definitely not what you would expect from the everyday run-of-the-mill kdramas. The writers definitely took "the road less travelled" on this one.
2. Funny. Yes, there are actually funny moments and witty dialogues in this show.
3. The dramatic moments were justifiable, unlike other shows that made you want to just shake those girls to come into their senses and stop themselves from constantly crying, and crying, and crying, even when they shouldn't be crying. (Buckets, anyone?)
4. Characters were well-defined considering this was an ensemble cast. And that's not an easy thing to write especially since there are so many characters and subplots that must be taken cared of.
5. It wasn't the usual plot of: Boy meets girl; girl likes guy; guy has someone else; some other guy likes girl, but girl only has eyes for guy but uses some other guy as crying post, yada, yada, yada.
6. It's short. Thank you! Since this is what, a half-hour show, it makes it more easier to digest and less time consuming. The makers of this drama has definitely taken their neighbors and drama-producing counterpart--Japan's--motto of: "Let's keep it short and sweet--Heck, let's not even cook our fish cause we don't have the time for that either!"

THE BAD
It's not really that bad, but there are some cheesetastic moments, mainly from three characters, sometimes it's a bit overdone, but then again it calls for a more comical plot.

All in all I love this show, the soundtrack was well-chosen since it practically mirrors their lives, and the songs are not the sappy ballads nor the over-the-counter pop songs either. I actually can't wait for the 2nd season. Please producers of "Soulmate", if you're out there reading this post, I'm begging you for a 2nd season, and I've never begged for any kdramas to have more before...and that's a big thing for me.

Just finished watching the first two episodes, and in one word.......WOW!

This series has turned out to be highly entertaining so far, and I know I said the same thing about Fantasy Couple after two episodes (which became quite boring after that), but I have a very good feeling about this one - I know it won't let me down :)

Anyone know who that girl is with the hot body and luscious lips? Man...her lips are so kissable! <<----- I actually said that out loud while watching it with my wife. So.... err....yeah, hopefully the couch is comfy tonight :lol

Not sure if there's another version, but the first two episodes I saw were both one hour each in duration. Perhaps it felt like half an hour because it was so fast paced and fun? 8)

I second that request......and I've only seen 2 episodes! It really is THAT good.

fantasy couple bored me after 3 eps :lol rest assured, this is a much better show!

according to the wiki (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Soulmate), the actress' name is Jang Mi Ae. i actually wondered about her because in the show she's supposed to be a total hottie and every guy's fantasy but she looks kinda plain to me :P maybe it's a guy thing?

apparently each hour long episode actually contains 2 half hour episodes.. or something like that... which explains why it states 24 eps on the wiki..

i can see how those pouty lips & hot bod can be attractive to guys :lol

i wonder how were the ratings for the show in korea? that would probably play a big part in deciding whether there's going to be a part 2.. i think this show is under-rated because the actors/actresses aren't really famous?

According to some people in the Soulmate Soompi thread, it didn't rate very well. They didn't specifically state what the numbers were, but usually "bad ratings" pretty much means anything below 15%. It would be great if someone could post the actual figures.

A slightly lesser known cast could be one of the reasons for its low ratings, but I personally feel this type of series isn't embraced yet by the Korean public. They're just not ready for a contemporary drama with sexual innuendos and intelligent humor, but instead, rather stick to the tried and tested historical dramas and series based on terminal diseases, contract marriages and love triangles. It's a shame really, because Soulmate has taken k-dramas to a new level, but seems to be punished for doing so.

It's hard to imagine how someone would prefer a sappy drama over this gem. but perhaps u are right that the general public is still unable to accept this sort of intelligent humor or content that is a little more risque than in the usual kdramas. Such a huge pity! how could anyone not like soulmate? :lol

Name of the song

Post by Filmfan » Mar 13th, '07, 17:19

Does anyone know what the title of the song and who sang it in episode 9 where the Dong-wuk comes to pick yujin and her boss up from work, then he sees su-gyeong and he walks over to her and they stare at each other for a long time. The words are, "Don't turn, turn away. You're miles, miles away. Cause I, I can see you. Don't turn away, tonight..." Thanks for any help! Cause I tried to look at the soundtrack for Soulmates and some of them are in Korean, and sad for me I can't read it. And if anyone knows where i can listen to this song or any of the songs from the show's soundtrack online. Thanks again!

So agree with you furelise and kobe23. Really is too bad that the masses haven't embraced originality...perhaps one day, but here's to hoping that the producers still make the next season and not listen to the masses cause there are a number of us--especially the ones outside of the country--that really love this show. Hopefully they cater to the minority even though it might not be "commercially viable"...yet. But it will with enough publicity and word of mouth. I've already gotten quite a number of people to watch it.

Hi!

I just finished watching this drama and i definitely agree with you all! it's a totally different kdrama from what I am used to watch. I found it wittily funny! I really hope Season 2 will be produced! I read from another thread that it may be broadcasted in Summer or Winter this year (if it's to be produced)

As for the title and artist of the song it's called 'Don't Turn Away' by Peking Laundry! I also love this song! I also like 'Fly me to the Moon'! by Olivia Ong. All songs played in the drama are on this drama OSTs (there r 2 OSTs) which can be dloaded from D-addicts Torrents.

Ok, quickly off the top of your head, name me one k-drama in which you enjoyed each and every single episode? That's right.....you can't. Well, neither can I. Thank god for Soulmate then, because it has achieved the seemingly impossible -- to entertain the viewer for its entire duration.

I'm actually not quite sure why Soulmate is officially known as a sitcom because it plays more like a comedy/drama with plenty of character and plot development. Perhaps in Korea the interpretation of a sitcom is totally different because there is very little in common with American sitcoms I'm used to. This could be a good thing or a bad thing. In all depends on what your expectations are.

To me however, Soulmate is really fantastic stuff. It's something I've never experienced in a k-drama before. It's modern, witty and daring, but more importantly, retains the good things we love so much about k-dramas, such as realistic acting (for most parts anyway), beautiful cinematography and even a bit of melodrama. The pacing is really good also,. and is actually the first k-drama where I did not touch my media player to see how much time was left until the end of an episode. Although I must admit, the final episode did feel a bit draggy with numerous needless flashbacks and is really my only major complaint about this series as I felt the finale was a bit unsatisfying.

The cast is largely unknown (to me anyway), but did a great job most of the time especially by the four main characters Shin Dong-Wook, Lee Soo-kyung, Choi Phillip, and Sa Kang. There were at times some annoying, exaggerated acting by the supporting cast but generally everything was at a high level.

The OST is definitely one of my favorites so far. Some really meaningful songs played at beautiful moments in the series. The songs on their own aren't that nice to listen to, but during the show it really managed to convey the mood and capture the moments extremely well.

It's been quite a long search for me to find a drama which I enjoyed not because I loved one of the cast members (eg. Song Hye Kyo / Full House), but when it comes to Korean dramas, I think I have finally found my soulmate. (8.5 out of 10).

Actually, as far as I know, Soulmate scored rather good ratings - considering it was a sitcom. Sitcoms don't score nearly as well as dramas do, so it seems like Soulmate did, in fact, not bomb.

I also have to mention that I was in Korea last summer and that I saw the Soulmate DVDs at nearly every DVD store I checked out - and that's saying something, since the smaller ones usually only carried the 'big, trendy ones', like Goong, My Girl, Dae Jang Geum, MiSa or Winter Sonata.

And yeah, I have to agree with everyone - Soulmate is my single most favourite Korean TV show, for all the reasons you've mentioned.

from what i recall, soulmate never made top20 rating. but i don't know if that means it's unpopular. it might have done well for its timeslot, but i don't know much about it. i could easily be wrong.

also, this show was never popular over at korean boards or at soompi, or even here. but i'm sure it has its following of fans. i suspect they're underground.

as for good kdramas, well, 'sharp' was great. oh yeah, be strong geum soon was great despite being like over 100 episodes long. those dramas are well worth watching. loved them, felt like a part of the characters' lives etc etc.. but i'm aware of the fact that most people haven't seen them. resurrection and dae jang geum are other favorites. they're subtitled and have been released here but they're always worth noting too. :)

^ did you download it from asianosts.cjb.net ? If yes, then you've got the wrong version. I got it from there too and realized a few key songs were missing. You'll need to grab the OST from the torrent section here at d-addicts. I'm not sure where else you can get the correct version.

I just saw 30 mins of the 1st episode... wow! I simply have to get the rest of the episodes and finish watching it.
I think this is one of the most creative series that I've seen in a long time and yes, it's daring!
Problem is, it took me 3 weeks to download 1 episode via torrent :(
Anyone know of any direct download sites for HQ files? I know it's kinda hard to get, since it's such and old series.
