Worst J-drama Ever! (*spoilers*)

Post by doink-chan » Aug 23rd, '05, 23:34

What is the absolute worst J-drama you've ever seen and why?

I'll probably have to pick Hitonatsu no Papa e. doinkies only watched this because it had Ueto Aya in it, and, well, Aya and the theme song sung by her was the only good thing about this drama.

This is the first time I heard someone said "summer snow" is boring :P
Anyway, for me, I have quite a long list of bad doramas
pretty girls, hatachi no kekkon, omiai kekkon, family value, yasha, musashi, oishii kankei, hitonatsu no papa e, and more :P
and the worst of those listed above is hatachi no kekkon
because I only managed to watch 2 eps, it's so boring

Woah! Summer Snow is actually the 2nd most voted drama of all time on JDorama.com. By comparison, only GTO has more votes, and it even beat out classics like Long Vacation and Gokusen.

I usually don't consider a drama boring or bad if I only watched the first episode or two because I never gave the drama a chance to mature as the story rolled along. As for my pick for worst drama, it would have to be Loved to Love (TBS). Other than the famous actors in the drama, it has virtually none of the elements of a trendy drama (flying space shuttles, spirits, etc.) I also didn't like Wakaba (asadora drama) because the heroine just didn't appeal to me -- not like Oshin, Asuka, Sakura or Fight.

at least you managed to watch 2 eps, I watched the first 20 min. or so at least 3 times, geez I can't seem to go further than that without thinking that I'm wasting my life again with that kinda *****. lol Now it's sitting on my harddrive sigh..

I thought golden bowl wasn't that great, although the hottie factor and the bowling games kept it alive. There was meant to be romance, but I'm not into married woman + young man type couples lol, speaking of, it was the same thing in yanpapa, and woah that freaked me out too, my naga-kun marrying a 50 year old? I was like WTF??? Especially after seeing the kawaii Yukosomething as his wife in Mukodono, I almost stopeed watching it, except I couldn't take my eyes of tomoya nagase. LOL good thing she died in the first episode.

I used to go by the jdorama voting system....but I guess the system doesn't suit my tastes at all. I can't say GTO was bad, not at all, I enjoyed it quite a lot. But I still think it's overrated. Long vacation wasn't bad, but that one's totally overrated. the only thing that wasn't totally blowed up was Beautiful Days, which I thought was wonderful. But summer snow....ugh lol. I'll watch it just to see why it's #2...someday. The most UNDER rated jdoramas are:

Hakusen Nagashi, Mukodono, Million Stars Fall from the Sky

I usually watch a dorama till the end, like hitonatsu no papa e, or attack no.1
attack no.1 is really bad dorama, i think
I gave up on musashi after 30 eps or so, way way worse than shinsengumi (which is good dorama)

btw, where is this jdorama voting system? can't find it
Long Vacation is old, so it's probably very good at its time (1996)
people tend to remember how good it was, rather than how good it is now
GTO was good, Beautiful Life was good (tho I don't like Tokiwa Takako), Summer Snow was good
Love Generation, Hero, Kamisama, Love Revolution, Brand, Million Stars, so many good doramas :)
I haven't even mentioned jdoramas from last 2 years hehe

I don't remember any J-Drama being that horrible. A lot of them are decent, but not worth continuing. If I was forced to watch them, it wouldn't be bad at all. K-drama on the other hand got some horrible dramas to me. I can't stand them.

Exactly...
Worst jdrama? Hmn, I can probably come up with 2-3 dramas...SOS as the worst...
Koukou Kyoushi 2003 wasn't that bad, I was just annoyed with the ending.
Likewise, if someone asks me to list down jdramas that has to be watched no matter what...the type that doesn't need to be perfect but has the ability to capture the audience's attention and emotions all the way to the end...I would have a very short list as well. All the rest would fall in my "see it" list. Sure, most of them have a good cast, a reasonable plot, antagonists-free, less episodes, cleaner and more creative presentation, meaningful script--nothing to poke fun of, really--but one can happily die without seeing them (symbolically speaking, of course).

It was unfair to say Summer Snow as the worst drama when the 1st episode wasn’t even finished. I, myself, couldn’t fathom its top 2 position even after finishing the whole drama. The leading male may not be a looker, it might have been a little slow paced...but it still didn't deserve your trashings. I dont even know why I'm defending the damn thing when I couldn't remember most of the story anyway, but what I remember is how it gave me a nice melancholic feeling towards the end. I wouldn't really recommend it, nor will I say bad things about it. It'll be a sin to put down such a simple warm-hearted drama.

i watched many dramas good and bad ones, some of the bad dramas are just a waste of time:

- Maria
- Fighting girl
- pretty girls
- SOS (when i watched ep 1 i thought it'll be a good drama but i just cant stand kyoko fukada)

hmm, i cant seem to remember the rest. i'll check my list when i get back home.
People shouldn't dwell on the past. It's enough to try your best in all that your'e doing now.

Its not funny and the storyline makes you wanna fall asleep. This is definitely the drama you should watch if you have trouble sleeping.

hmm.. my version of worst dorama would be..

with love (eventhough there're fujiwara norika and yutaka takenouchi, it really can't help getting the dorama out from boredom)

sayonara ozu sensei (I hate watching the "furuhata ninzaburo" in this dorama)

aoi tori (i know that there're lots of people who love this dorama, but the ending??? please!!!)

I actually have to agree. There are trendy dramas where they start off well, explode with the best writing around the middle of the season, and then spend the last two or three episodes summarizing everything (and doing a lousy job at it.)

Watching hundreds of trendy dramas, one thing I've learned is that generally Japanese writers are LOUSY at writing closures. It seems that these writers read the same Drama Writing 101 book. Why do they throw all of their great stuff near the middle of the series? This is bad because drama fans watch with emotion. With each hop of emotion, it's a bad thing to have the emotion drop as the drama moves forward. In the case of Aoi Tori, I can honestly say you should stop watching after episode 7 or 8 because, as minerva mentioned, the rest is nothing but a lousy excuse for a closure.

In great drama series, writing is like this:

1. You develop the main characters - maybe first two to three episodes.
2. In episodes 2 to 5, you develop the issues - either a conflict, problem, romantic triangle, or whatever.
3. By episode 6 or 7, the writing should have reached its peek so that everyone now knows what the issues are, UNSOLVED.
4. From episode 7 to the end, you solve the issues.
5. The last episode is, for the lack of a better way of saying it, "The sh*t hits the fan!"

Using a cliche... In a lousy 12-episode trendy drama, we already know the butler is the murderer, and he's in prison by episode 7. In great trendy dramas, we don't know the butler did it until the end. If you think about it, great CDs start off with their best song at the beginning, and then finish off strong with a great final track, with their so-so material in between.

Most trendy drama fans will remember the ending more than any other part of the drama. This is the area where most reviewers will decide if the drama hit or miss. So it would be interesting to see if the lousy dramas people list here are a result of bad closure.

Summer So?

Post by JiJi_McPaws » Aug 25th, '05, 19:46

I think it's kind of amusing how a thread like this is able to change topics to an "Summer Snow" thread. I enjoy Summer Snow, but for crying out loud let tikleabubble have an opinion without telling him he's wrong :P

Of all the drama's I have seen and watched through completely, Kimi wa Petto was my least favorite. And as for drama's that I had to stop watching in the middle of, I'd say Yan Papa was pretty boring.

To Heart and Food Fight. To Heart and Summer Snow are the only two jdramas I never managed to finish watching, while I don't have an opinon on Summer Snow - it simply wasn't my cup of tea.

I hated To Heart very thorughly and it didn't improve at all when I set to watch eps 2. So I quit.
Food Fight is the absolutely worst jdrama I've ever watched to completion.

While the above two have a common denominator somewhere, let it be said I liked Strawberry on the Shortcake and Oyaji (or was it Otousan) that had the same ingredient.

I think the worst drama for me was "Soori to Yobanaide". This one had such a great all star cast, but was soooooo boring! Gee, it took me years and years to finish it (I had hopes that if I kept watching it, it would get better!) I also didn't like Dekichatta Kekkon, the pairing of Takenouchi Yutaka and Hirosue Ryoko just didn't match for me (especially since they were in Beach Boys and Long Vacation together).

I think someone mentioned under-rated dramas too. I think Nagura Onna (Boxing Woman) with Wakui Emi is a good drama, but lots of people never even heard of it. Definitely one of my faves.

doinkies liked Summer Snow, even the cheesy ending...

But yeah, Pretty Girls and Oishii Kankei were pretty boring and doinky. Lunch Queen is a much better food-related J-drama than Oishii Kankei.

Even thought I watched it all the way through, MUKODONO was really really REALLY bad, imo.

It was like... SO idiotic! The acting was horrible, and the characters were all superb idiots themselves. I wish I had never wasted my time with it. :-(

I LOVED Mukodono. Thanks to Mukodono I discovered Tomoya Nagase! I am forever grateful to d-addicts for making Mukodono the JSOTW, thanks to all who voted for it! It was my second jdrama. After watching a Million Stars Fall From the Sky I didn't see any incredibly hot people, so I decided to stick to kdramas, but then I saw the Mukodono JSOTW banner and what do I see? TOMOYA NAGASE. So then I started searching for all his dramas, and now I am open to watching jdramas, though I still like kdramas better. Anyway, another drama that wasn't my cup of tea was Long Vacation, another overated kimutaku drama. Sometimes I think his dramas are all on the top 10 list on jdorama is b/c he's in it.

Beach Boys...........I thought after the first 2 or 3 epsisodes it would pick up. It never did so I didn' t bother watching the rest of it. I happened to like Pretty Girls personally and Summer Snow. SOS was the bomb, it was like watching soft porn at some points. Though both generally good dramas I felt both seasons of Kou Kou Kyoushi were a bit too dark for my taste. Love Letter was a major let down at just the 2nd episode.

Ditto on Kou Kou Kyoushi. And here I thought I was the only one. Lots of people love it but I am not one of them. :P Hated the first one so I didn't bother to watch the second series.

Mukashi no Otoko. Boring and they keep flashing back to the damn love scene over and over and over and OVER again.

Kinyobi no koibito tachi e (I think that's what it was called)
Holy crap, the melodrama galore....I watched this many years ago, so I don't remember much about it, but to this day it still burns a hole in my stomach thinking about it. I have no idea why the heck I bothered finishing this one since it was just a whole mess of pathetic female insecurities over a dour, ex-piano maestro turned security guard...Arrrgh!

As for To Heart....I have to admit that some days I like some teeny parts of it (I blame the catchy music), but overall it is just creepy fangirl/stalker city!
"Ai wa power!" my foot! Any self-respecting citizen would have slapped a restraining order on that chick at some point during her obsessive clinging phases...

I'm in the Summer Snow was pretty lame camp as well but I did sit through all of it.
One thing I think should be said is that giving up on a dorama after one or two eps may cause you to miss out on what could become your favorite dorama.

Take OMS for example. After two eps, I was thinking to myself that it was going to be poor scrappy chef assistant Kimtaku chasing the rich princess. If I had quit there I would have missed out on one of my favorite "Holy Sh_t! Did I just see that?" moments. (Not to spoil it for anyone, I'll just say, it's around episode nine and involves a gun.) I also wouldn't have come to love Fukatsu Eri who only plays a minor role in the beginning. I thought OMS would be a mediocre romance at first but it turned out to be one of my favorite doramas. (Anyone with Fukatsu Eri dorama reccomendations?)

As for the polls, I use them less to determine what I might like than I do to see if I'm a misfit or not. In other words, looking at the polls I'll know that if I badmouth something I don't like, as in Summer Snow, I can expect a certain reaction.

My favorite lame dorama is Golden Bowl. I knew it was lame while I was watching it and I still don't know why I like it.

GTO - wanted to give up afterep_2 or ep_3; finally gave up persevering to ep_5, the last ep and the movie. Didn't like the great teacher himself.

Kou Kou Kyoushi- didn't like the story and the teacher's acting was whiny. Love story and acting just weren't convincing.

Love Generation - can't stand the girl. Deleted the series from the hard drive; don't want to ever seed this series for anyone, even though KimuTaku is my top actor.

Summer Snow - watched to the end; wondered why I watched it (because of the ratings and reviews) and felt I could have used the time for another series. Deleted this series from my hard drive, too.

one more for the summer snow haters clan.......

I watched the whole series, and remember thinking at every tur: "Is it legal for something to be this corny?" Personally I was rooting for the doctor, even though it was short lived.... Somehow im happy with the ending....
************SPOILER******************************

Anyone that annoying shouldnt be alive at the end of the drama... I also felt the same way about Ha Ji Won and Jo In sung in WHIB, They just have to go, so even though the drama sucked Im ok with the conclusion because it fulfilled one of my wishes.....
Doing research....

If you havesome time for an interview PM me... It would really help me out:)

I had to back it up and replay it two more times, once to be sure that's what happened and again to get back with the story. I love showing this show to Kimtaku fans, although sometimes it puts them into therapy.

I agree with you on the part about SOS, even a great cast like that can't help this drama from its poor plot and horrible actings. I basically slept through most of the episodes, it was just terribly utterly boring . I'm amazed that I finished the whole drama, though my attention on the happenings in the drama is near zero, lol, not that I need to focus my attention on it entirely to understand what's going on.

Mukodono, Strawberry on the Shortcake and Wedding Planner were all pretty damn awful. I didn't get past episode one on SOS, and Wedding Planner/Mukodono were like peas in a pod in terms of their predictability and episodic...ness. Very episodic, with weak, underdeveloped and cliched characters. YES IN BOTH OF THEM. Nagai is hot and all, but he couldn't help that mess. Food Fight and GTO are another two. GTO had the great manga behind it, but it was excecuted very poorly and so certain characters just grated on my nerves (particularly Matsushima Nanako's character. Speaking of her, Forbidden Love was another horrible one). And I swore towards the end that if I heard that bloody opening song again, I would tear my ears off. Of course I didn't, but still.

Actually, it would seem that I just dislike Matsushima Nanako and so I can't stand any of her dramas. Yamato Nadeshiko was bad to me as well. Antique Cake house, or whatever that thing was called...

Alrighty.

Here's my list.

Mukodono
Strawberry on the Shortcake
Wedding Planner
Food Fight
Golden Bowl
GTO
Forbidden Love
Antique Cake House? Shop? Store?
Yamato Nadeshiko
Last Christmas
Pretty Girls (GAG)
Ace wo Nerae

And I just have to throw this in, the absolute worst Cdrama I've ever seen.

"At Dolphin Bay"

It was the worst, but it was also the best. Know why?
The nuns. It was beautiful.

It was like... SO idiotic! The acting was horrible, and the characters were all superb idiots themselves. I wish I had never wasted my time with it. :-(
Same, I'll go for Mukodono too. And waterboys... yaaaaaawn!

Summer Snow for me. I've loved ALL of the j-doramas I've watched and think they're much much better than k-dramas aside from this. I found the whole thing really cliched (no offense to SS fans) and predictable. I was a bit disappointed after I saw that it was placed #2 on the top 50 jdoramas list and everything....
downloading dramas in secret..... shhhhh!

I haven't seen nearly as many J-Dramas as the rest of you, apparently. I only started watching them recently, after discovering (and very much liking) the show Hero, on the JPopSuki site -- which made me want more J-Drama, which eventually led me here.

The complete list of everything I've watched so far is only: Hero, Trick (1, 2 & 3), Engine, Maria, Gokusen (1 & 2), Pretty Girls, Dragonzakura and Densha Otoko. (And of course, those last two aren't finished yet.)

Out of that list, the only one I've actively disliked so far is Pretty Girls, which was horribly saccharine, shallow and stupid. Every single one of the characters annoyed me, and the plot was incoherent. By the end of the series, I was almost wishing that someone would blow that store up with everyone inside it.

My worst would have to be:

Hero
Pride

Almost anything with Kimura in it - I just don't like (I can't stand his acting)...also in the case of Hero - I watched the whole thing and all the episodes (except for one) was not interesting. Pride - very boring as well - very formula (and yes I'm a big hockey fan and that's why I gave this one a shot) but after a few episodes I stopped watching.

Other ones that I didn't enjoy: My Husband (iboring), Files of Young Kindaichi S1 (only really b/c of my dislike for Domoto Tsuyoshi) and Local News Section 3.

It's true that pride is very formula, most (all?) dramas are very formula anyway. It's KimuTaku is a hockey player/Racing pilote/pianiste/ any sexy job you want, and he's good but facing some difficulties and add a love story on top (at first they hate but it's love in fact). You can do the same with the "I'm in love with someone whos' going to die at the end of the drama" type or the "love triangle" type. Most TV serials are formula, american series too. In fact it's the working principle behind that kind of stuff. I think that's part of the interst of that kind of programs: "how are they going to make something within the canva?". I enjoyed Pride quite a lot but I must admit my wife is same as you: she hates KimuTaku :D . Well, he allways plays the same character so his acting is efficient but quite basic! :P But Takeuchi Yuko was really good in that one, in all the other dramas I saw her, her acting is quite pushy, based on a few "kawai" expressions...

I dont't think KimuTaku is a great actor. He's not able to play different kind of roles since he's allways acting in the same way. But sometimes it fits really good like in Beautiful Life or Engine (2 of my all time favourites). He's been in a lot of good dramas, but that does not make him a great actor.

Btt, here's my list of the worst J-Dramas I have seen:

1. Good Luck!!
2. Kimi wa petto
3. Kou kou kyoushi 2003
4. Maria
5. Virgin Road

I've seen that Kimura always plays a troubled person...with lots of inner angst, as a result he uses a lot of the same facial expressions. Long Vacation, beautiful life, OMS, he plays a mysterious person. But then again, actors always get the same roles if they get popular playing a certain type of role. Even my Tomobaby always plays gangster loudmouths now....if not gangster than loudmouth! He used to play a bunch of mysterious roles, but I guess he looks more like a gangster now :D. Except in Mukodono where he acted soooo kawaaiii!!! (still a loudmouth though lmao). Anyway, I'd like Tomoya to be given a greater variety of characters to play, because he's the Best of Japan. ICHIBAN~!

How did I start rambling about Tomoya? ...ja

What is the "OMS" drama to which several of you have referred? I gather it's got Takuya Kimura in it, but I can't find anything called "OMS" (or even using those initials) listed among his credits on JDorama.com...

Wow, it's been a while since I've looked at this thread so many good posts to respond to.

1. Hey what's so bad about SOS? It has that great ABBA music to carry it! javascript:emoticon(':P')
Tongue

2. 20centuryboy - Thanks for the reccomendation. I watched Odoru a little while back. It wasn't bad but I was hoping for more.

3. Tao Libra - Two words for you; Watch Long Vacation! (I guess that's three isn't it?)

4. tikleabubble - Do you know where I might find White Love Story? (and you're right, I don't care who the guy in it is javascript:emoticon(':D')
Big Smile

5. danyowrong - I agree with taihou shichauzo. Beautiful manga to mediocre anime (I liked the 4 OVA's though) to terrible dorama. I was hoping it would be good when I downloaded it but I had a feeling it might suck. I'm glad I was prepared.

I think I replied to everyone I wanted to. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Has anyone heard of a show called Loved to Love?
This was recommended to me because it has Kuroki Hitomi in it. When I read the plot summary I got the impression that it's one of those stories that people will either love, hate or laugh at. Something about Japan's first space shuttle, time warps, and of course romance, made it sound to me like a show that would fit in this thread.

yeah i just remembered other jdrama i disliked:

- food fight (too bad i like kusanagi tsyushi, but this drama was way too cheesy..)
- To heart (wasnt anything special, just a boring love story...although dhomoto tsuyoshi can act)
- Golden Bowl ( i watched ep 1 and gave it up, although my bro has the whole series :S )
People shouldn't dwell on the past. It's enough to try your best in all that your'e doing now.

If you read my earlier post in this topic (4th post overall), Loved to Love was my vote. I apologize to the D-Addicts race for even uploading that drama. I killed all the torrents once it was finished. It's that bad!

Sorry about that. When I first read this thread I had no idea what the show was so it went over my head. I heard about it a couple of days ago and when I came back today I only read back as far as my last post.

So with all the torrents gone, how can I get a copy of it? Saying "It's that bad!" only makes me want to see it even more. BTW the person that recommended it to me seemed to like it but didn't get to watch all of it when it was broadcast on TV.

Funny...I didn't like Food Fight either...lol...though I do like Kusanagi's acting. Fukada is pretty much annoying to watch...her sad face looks exactly like her happy face...expressionless.

Overall, I think quite a bit of people are much more lenient about the quality of a show once Kimura is in it. I don't know why...

When I very first entered the Japanese drama world, one of my very first questions was: What's the big deal about Kimura Takuya?

I think it has something to do with the following:

1. The Johnny's Juniors agency. It seems that this agency has the kind of promotional power that you don't see in the West. If you're a young, skinny Japanese dude with dyed, uncombed hair, with even SOME talent you could be brought into the Johnny factory and become a mega star. It all depends on which group within the factory you're stuck with. Kimura was fortunate to be a part of SMAP.

2. SMAP. When I first heard one of their songs in the late 1990's, I really thought it was a prank of some sort. I was wrong. I discovered that this group was the biggest selling boy group of all-time. I found out later that Japanese idols - both boys and girls - do not actually have to sing well or even carry a tune for that matter. It's all about looks, looks, and looks, along with Johnny's magical formula for instant promotional success. Even with my favorite girl Sakai Noriko - when she first started out, she was still learning to sing. So it is very fortunate for Kimura Takuya to be a part of the almost insanely success SMAP has achieved over the years.

3. Idol first, quality second. In Japanese culture, promotion is EVERYTHING. The youngsters of today are wheened on promotion. It's almost like they've been brainwashed into believing everything they see. I've found that the Japanese's strongest sense is sight, which is why when it comes to investing their money or time in various products and services, their eyes will work much much stronger than their ears. SMAP is a fine example. Since the formation of this group, virtually EVERY venture the members participated in spelled instant success before the ink on the contract was even dry. Just look at the download numbers for ENGINE... It's HUGE - and it isn't even a manga or anime. I guarantee you a large majority of the downloads were SMAP or Kimura fans. Kimura Takuya's success, in my honest opinion, is PURELY through association. Even Shingo's association with Shinsengumi! helped the taiga drama win almost every drama award out there (and NHK taiga dramas are supposed to be boring and geared towards old folks). And because of Shinsengumi's success, NHK decided to invest in yet another Johnny's Junior for this year's Yoshitsune. I tell you folks - kabuki actors are OUT of taiga dramas, and Johnny's are IN.

4. YOU, the fan, is buying the hype. It's a Japanese cultural thing. Young Japanese are so much into the "Hey, look at me! Look at me!" business. And you see this in many kid-based Japanese dramas, where you have a kid who isn't fitting in with his classmates, and therefore does things that are unlike him, such as dying his hair, buying a cellphone, or singing karaoke. This "I want to fit in" idea is a perfect petrie dish for building hype. You're aren't anyone unless you like so-and-so, or are watching this-and-that. And it isn't just the Japanese who are doing this... Beginning Japanese drama fans are falling for the hype. They hear things like, "If you haven't watched Long Vacation, your opinion on any drama isn't worth the consideration. You have no foundation... You have no baseline! You don't know dramas until you have witnessed the greatest thespian that ever graced the small screen!!!!!!" Oh my GAWD, I must watch these ESSENTIALS of Japanese dramas so that I can fit in and be liked and accepted by everyone else. And the list consists mostly of dramas starring - you guessed it - Kimura Takuya. Which is why on JDorama.com, I even made a joke game called the "Six Degrees of Kimura Takuya" because it seemed that it was very vital that even other Japanese drama stars had to appear in one of his works.

I could go on and on about all of this.... Watch for my book to come out at a Border's soon! LOL!

For those of you who don't go to JDorama.com for one reason or another (I have my own set of reasons), here's the Top-10 list of Japanese dramas, as voted on by its members -- yeah, people like you:

1. Great Teacher Onizuka
2. Summer Snow
3. Long Vacation
4. Beautiful Life
5. Love Generation
6. Good Luck!!
7. Gokusen
8. Pride
9. Hero
10. Mukodono!

Is it just a coincidence that six out of the ten has Kimura Takuya (probably acting as Kimura in all of them)? Oh, the dramas in bold stars him. So now I can see why some people on D-Addicts don't agree with this list. Gotta love one quote I saw on the list:

"I watched [Good Luck!!] just cause of Kimura-san..he looked very good in the pilot uniform..but the Dorama was so not that special"

If you don't like Kimura for one reason or another, this list just isn't happening for you...

And along with this, but sorta unrelated. Has anyone seen Tokyo Tower yet? Again, I really wanted to like it because of Jun...

That's funny, because despite opinions here my absolute least favorite drama was "A Million Stars Fall from the Sky". I couldn't stand either of the male leads and twist was something I could see from the second episode. Not to mention the ending made me roll my eyes at how melodramatic it was.

Well, it's not that I dislike Takuya Kimura... Rather, I dislike what he symbolizes (hype, promotion, associations, etc.) You should see me at my weekly drama roundtable dinner Friday nights ranting over Ueto Aya's popularity (same reasons). I'm doing much better though... I've cut my ranting down from one hour to about one minute. We're now more into flaming Korean dramas, but that's a different subject in itself.

As for my favorite artistes, they're all 1990's stars seeing that period is my personal preference (the golden NGN years of trendy dramas when Fuji-TV dramas were subbed). Also, I pretty much watch dramas based on subject matter and the screenwriter, rather than who's starring in the drama. So I tend to like dramas that are depressing.

Guys:
Eguchi Yosuke
Sorimachi Takashi
Fukuyama Masaharu
Toyokawa Etsushi
Oda Yuji
Takenouchi Yutaka
Karasawa Toshiaki

Gals:
Sakai Noriko
Matsushima Nanako
Suzuki Honami
Koizumi Kyoko
Wakui Emi
Takashima Reiko
Tokiwa Takako

I don't blame people...all that hype with Kimura Takuya. If I could I'd replace all those dramas with Tomoya Nagase dramas, regardless of the minor guilt I might get from that :lol . I totally disagree that Mukodono isn't better than GTO...I mean....it is totally better than GTO. It has the best characters (especially Sakuraba Yuichiro) of all the characters I've seen in jdramas.

I totally disagree that Summer Snow is #2..... :glare:
Beautiful Life is definitely better than Long Vacation (what's so great about long vacation??)

There are many lesser known dramas that beat those on the list in terms of plot and acting...but rating dramas is like rating music (as someone has said b4). When it's popular it's #1, when something new comes up and it's the hottest at the moment, then we get a new #1.

Not a surpirse that there are so many kimutaku dramas on the top ten, after all, isn't jhe the hottest thing in Japan right now?

9. Hero
10. Mukodono!
What's even more disturbing about this list is that, with the exception of GTO (which I still think is waaaaaaaaaayy highly overrated), ALL of them, star a Johnny's member as the male lead. But I guess these dramas tend to get a lot of popularity here b/c:
1) This poll is on an English-based board, so it's kind of a vicious circle, but
a. Even without subtitles, most of these stories are simple enough to get the gist of what's going on without understanding exactly what the heck the ppl are saying.
b. That being said, a lot of these on the list were among the first to be subtitled, so ppl have actually seen them and understood what was going on...Enough for them to think, "wow, that was great! what else should I watch?" and go to an English based board for recommedations...They see the poll, they watch, and the cycle continues...
c. Ppl always have an inflated view of their first exposure to these things. The more you watch, the more mundane most stories become, but by that time, you've already cast your vote into the expanding pool of votes for the same dramas...

2) No offense to anybody, but generally ppl like shallow, light entertainment. Let's face it. For most ppl TV and TV dramas are a form of escapism. Most people don't watch dramas for their own edification or anything. These dramas are specifically designed as feel-good features to appeal to the masses. And they work...

3) Eye candy always helps ratings too...and we all know how fangirls can be.... O_o;;

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy (almost) all of these, but there are also much better ones out there, hidden in the deep, dark, untranslated past...and future...:fear:

I agree the list isn't very happening to me, with the exception of GTO.

Yup it's really easier to catch Kimu Taku's dramas than others. My wife hates him but we saw most of his stuff because it was easy to get.

I think that KimuTaku does his one character very, very well. It's with an acting style that you really don't see with other actors. He doesn't have any range, but like American actors such as David Hyde Pierce, if you put him in the right role, he really shines.

As for worst drama... I don't think I've seen a worst drama, but the ones that really don't match my taste are:
-- Fugou Keiji/Millionaire Detective: A constant study in overacting and recycled jokes.
-- Keiji Ichiro/Detective Ichiro: A series that threw away its plot in episode 7 so it could wrap up and go off the air in 9 episodes. (Watch the earlier episodes and compare them with the last three. It's night and day.)
-- Wakaba: I'm still watching it, but only to see the acting of Yuko Tanaka. All the other actors are one-note stereotypes of themselves; the plots are way too predictable; and they always hit you over the head with the moral of the episode by repeating it about four or five times.
-- Yume de Aimashou: I'm sure that Akiko Yada fans will love it. I am not impressed with her. But the main problem is that the writing is terrible. Each plot is wrapped up in the same episode (even the ones that probably should have been several episodes long), and they all turned out exactly the way I predicted. Also the acting of the minor characters (especially the love interests) is the worst I've seen since Wakaba.

But it's a little allways the same recipe. Like " what he's gonna be next time?" astronaut, fireman, snails-tamer etc... and there's allways that part when he lectures everyone like "don't gave up your dreams kids etc...", crappy stuff of that sort! :D but most of his stuff is watchable!
