Welcome Audrey, and thanks for the link.
I totally agree about the duration. I don't see the reason behind it and to put it mildly, it doesn't do any good to the drama. Despite being my favourite, I've always felt the Taiwanese version with its 40-45 min episodes was too short and so its plot was rushed a bit. But what can I say now? I was surprised that it could be shortened and I was shocked that it had been shortened so much. I had high hopes before but after I've seen four episodes I'm not so happy anymore. Either we'll only get rough synopsis compared to the manga or there'll be very big changes in the story. But what about depth and genuineness? Literally there's no time for them.
In my opinion the Taiwanese one had darker tone than the manga which I liked very much. You could feel the presence of fear, dark mystery and unsaid problems. Contrarily the Japanese version has the same tone as the manga or maybe even lighter where you have no clue about the darkness. I wouldn't have a problem with it if the story evolved nicely and I knew for sure that certain things would happen later, but once again, what can be done in 20 minutes?
(By the way, do you guys know how many episodes it will have?)
I think the actors fit their roles, however I'm not pleased with Makio's character either (the same reasons as you, Audrey) and what's worse, I don't like how Kira is shown
Her behaviour is a basic thing for the plot so she can't vary from the Kira in the manga. I wonder it's the director's fault or the actress's lack of ability. Even if one dislikes Barbie Xu, one must admit she was great being Kira (Qiluo). I say, unless you expressly are a hater, Audrey, you should really try the Taiwanese version too. It's a duty for a hardcore fan.
