have you encountered any problems at the airport???

Post by kdraemae » Mar 18th, '08, 05:36

HI everyone,

Just want to share my experience at the airport with you guys and want to know which airline would you prefer.

My family have been back to Vietnam for over 10 times. All the airlines that we chose are pretty okay, except United Airline at LAX. This morning i had a worst experience ever in my life. Guess what was happened??

The flight was at 12:10 p.m. I drove my dad to the airport at 9 but we got there at 11 b/c of traffic and we couldn't find the parking. When we got there, nobody told us where to go. THey basically didn't even bother to check my dad's ticket and they sent us over to the self-check in, which they should sent us to the other counter for the international. checking. When we got there, didn't know what to do with the self check-in and i asked them. They ignored me. And finally i figured by looking at other people. If i wasn't there, my dad totally didn't know what to do b/c no English on the screen. There were all kinds of different languages, except Vietnamese. We finally got the ticket, and the baggage stickers. The United Airline agent came over and weigh the baggages. Do you know what she said? "I hate doing Saigon (Vietnamese) bag?" I was like "hello, i'm your customer and i can understand English you know." Afterward, she finished her work, she told us to wait for a different agent to check the passport and the visa. I was like waiting and waiting and waiting. The other agent was like talking to the other travelers about the seat and other ****. She kept repeating herself over the same stuff to the white guy. I was so mad and she just smiled at me and asked me to wait. I went over to the different agent and asked him to check the passport and visa for my dad. He did and he told me to go over and get the baggage receipt. And yes, i went over and that lady still ignored me. She told me to wait for her until she finished with that man. It took her 30 min to finish the instruction. Finally she came over and apologized. She offered that she will let someone escort my dad upstairs. I thought everything will be done and guess what? She looked at the ticket again and finally she said "it's late! we only have 20 minute. The plane is probably took off. Sorry we have to rebook the ticket" I was like what the heck is that. That's it!! I've been waiting for 30 min just to hear that from her. Wow...and guess what else she did. She started saying "sorry" and then she took the box from inside and pushed it out to us. She then ran out and grab the cart and immediately put it up for us. I kept asking what she was doing and it was her fault. Why would we have to leave. She was like "sorry mam, there's nothing we can do. You should come 2 hours before the flight." Omg, she totally blamed on us while she kept saying that was our fault. I kept explaining and she like didn't even bother to listen and kept trying to push our cart away from the counter. I was too upset and mad b/c she didn't listen. She kept blaming on us. I was nearly having heart attack and passed out. Thanks goodness, that my dad was yelling and asked to speak to Vietnamese agent. LUckily there was one guy and he talked to us. He finally spoke and understand human language. He accepted that he was his fault. He did his best for it, but somehow kept defending the airline.

And guess what? We got nothing from it. Well, we got a discount of $150 for next flight. Yea, and they think we would choose the airline. Keep dreaming. I couldn't believe we give in. And if it were you guys, what would you do? I feel this is like totally discrimination here. Do you guys ever experience this kinds of problems or something more extreme than that? Please share and let everyone know what to do if they encounter it.

That was really annoying!!! I cant believe these days such an important company hire this type of person.

I never had troubles like that. Only one time when a plane didnt go out because the pilot was ill. But all my combinations were re sheduled without any recharge.

I dont think this is a discrimination but most of the times they search twice my things and clothes and passport. Im arabian descendant and you know... all the Osama and Saddam facts. So I understand.

Most of the airlines are excellent. I cant say the same of the land companies like bus or train but this is another story -_-u

I know exactly how that feels like, it's happened to me many times. It's so frustrating, but there's nothing you can do and they know it.

I have been travelling since i was 5 - so more than 22 years now
I am white(caucasian) but have been travelling a lot to Africa so I have encountered such behaviour though not at my expense
My dad used to work for an airline (regional manager for West Africa) so from that point of view here's the advice I can give : whenever you feel you are being disrespected by the ground staff, ask IMMEDIATELY to speak to their Superviser/Manager
One thing that is certain is that they **** their pants when their boss is called coz
1. it's a SERVICE industry after all and the last thing their boss wants to hear is passengers complaining about the quality of the personnel
2. with all the cuts in working places in the airline industry, no one's job is safe

So when you do that, remember :
1. the name of the person giving you trouble(badge)
2. describe in detail why you felt disrespected and remind them that's not how your travel was supposed to start
3. ask for an immediate refund of your ticket ! - VERY IMPORTANT
4. DO NOT GET ANGRY AT THE BOSS - show restraint - works very well
5. do not let the person you had problems with interrupt you - if they try tell them they had the opportunity to be polite earlier, now they should keep quiet

I can guarantee this works coz I know very well how airline managers think (my dad was one lol) and also I have personnally tested it in another occasion and i'm pretty sure the guy got fired (mostly coz I was precise - I have a very good memory - and remained calm)

Hope this helps you should you have similar troubles in the future, and not only with airlines !

While I would mostly agree with flaesh, sometimes the managers are the worst. I know that's not how they're supposed to be because I have friends and family who work in the airline industry, but some people take their positions for granted.

That's a very good advice. But too bad, i didn't know about that. They just made me so mad that i can't remain calm anymore. The thing was when i asked them for their manager, nobody came. All they did was pull me aside and told me that the manager will talk to me. I demanded not to leave and my parents demanded for a Vietnamese agent. There was one came and the next was the supervisor i supposed. She came and whispered with that guy. She wasn't helpful at all.

If this was the case, what else can i do? I did research about United Airline. They received a lot of complaints and they didn't do anything to solve it. They just like "we'll give you the coupon." That's it! Any suggestions???

Anyway...thank you for the advices. I'm glad that you guys understand this, and hopefully no one would ever encounter this situation like i do.

Yes so annoying!!! Once I was at the airport in Beijing and they didn't have the drink I wanted in the premier lounge! And a slice of lemon is that difficult to find?!? Oh and the smoking rooms in those lounges, they are too small.

But most annoying are the Security checks and when your luggage is delayed >.>
