Crushes on Seniors

Post by Yorokobi » Jul 8th, '07, 12:55

You often see in mangas and dramas how a junior girl will have an undying love for a senior boy at her school. I thought this was just something the put in these stories because it appealed to the romantic youth.
However recently I came to live in Japan and work at a school helping out in the english classes, and I have discovered after making friends with some junior girls that its not just fiction. A large majority of the junior girls at my school have these huge crushes on senior boys, and just like in manga and dramas they are always thinging about it. But unlike in manga and dramas they are mostly to embarrased to try anything, most of them never even talk to the guy the like.
Anyway I was wondering if its like thing in other parts of the world or just in Japan. I never noticed it at my high school in New Zealand but I was wandering about other places. So if you want to let me know about your country or just want to discuss this kind of love. Post here!

I think that's fall into the category of "attracted to the much older ones?" :-)....

Yup...that is happening here too.I bet in every part of world.Older guys look better than one old as girl is. Always greener, right?
I was so in love with one guy (I was younger then) but I did never try to talk with him...as u said I felt embarrased...because I was younger ,I guess....

I remember having a crush on a sempai, I actually avoided seeing him, meeting him, talking about him, listening gossips about him, In fact everyone thought I hate him or have no interest in him, the truth was oppossite, but I knew that I'm no good, and he's not gonna spot me anyways... so since the begining I gave up and tried to kill my love for him... (I know I'm weird)

Just a wild guess here, but, could all this be because of an old saying that went something like, "Older men has experience and money to take care of their woman, while men of same age or younger does not have that experience to support their woman."?

I think... many of those "crushes" (at least in Japan) are from peer pressure rather than the girl really FALLING for the guy.

Like a girl would see her friend almost fan-girling over another guy, and so she gets her own guy to fangirl. It's not like the guy actually is hot. He's just an existance to make her fit in with the majority.

Just my two cents plus some personal experience.

If there is a particularly hot senior, then all the girls in an American school will like have some sort of attraction to them. However, people mostly date people in their own grade and social status.

It really depends on the guy, his social status, and if someone is willing to make the first move.

well, for me it wasn't money nor the experience that attracted me to him... I just needed to feel attached to someone... the fact was that I wasn't accepted by the people in my class and what was natural I had to fight with almost every member in my class so he was the one that spoke to me without being sarcastic or ironic... but then I started to avoid him, b.c I was afraid that he'll change his mind about me and become as my classmates were... it took them 3 years to see the real me :glare:

A junior falling for a senior? How much of an age difference are we talking here? If it's, for example, 3 years apart then, sure, that seems like a great difference when you're in your teens, but later you can end up dating someone who would've been your senior in school without even batting an eye. :lol

Anyway. Personally, I think that in falling for a senior the "beyond reach" factor plays a great part. Admiration from a distance might not be that fulfilling, but, on the other hand, if a girl has convinced herself that it would be impossible anyway and doesn't even attempt to approach her crush, she's not risking anything. There won't be any rejection because there'll never be a confession in the first place.

Just my thoughts on it. Hope it made some sense. :D

During school last year, I had a crush on this guy who was a senior. I never thought that I would like him that much, since I already knew that he will graduate before me. But after he graduated, I started to like him more and more. I feel a little stupid right now, I always pick guys who I can't have. D= The sad thing is, I've known him for at least three years, but then started to like him at the end of his last year.

I've known plenty of people in America that like people in higher grades then them. Like senior/sempai's is normal but I think it's rarer for people to act on them becuase they think they have no chance or know their senior will graduate soon.

As a freshman I really liked this senior. He was on the volleyball team I helped manage, funny, smart, goofy, and cute. He was always really nice to me but I never really talked to him. I don't know why I started liking him but I have never liked a guy as much as I liked him. I never bothered though because I only started liking him late in the year, he was graduating and he was polite but never showed too much interest in me. Although it hurt I figured it be better in the long run not to try.

...but then my friend's first (and current) boyfriend ws a senior when she was a sophmore. I think they got really close though because he was her mentor for an art class she was taking so she saw him all the time. :|
