gbbaker thanks for the links will check them out! thanks again.
BTW, i've read that there is a new research finding that says multilinguisitic people e.i. those who speak/read/write 2 or more languages has a lower chance of having alzheimers later in their life. so better learn a new language now.
:salut: :D

I knew it! I knew that my language wouldn't be included in the choices. I guess many other Asian countries don't even acknowledge our nation's existence huh?

Well, anyhooooow

- I can speak Mongolian , my native language ( had to learn, without a choice)
- Russian, fluent I guess lol
- lil Japanese ( started forgetting, ever since I started learning English at the age of 13)
- and obviously English
- lil German

Hope to learn Chinese one day!

Boo, not many choices for other people  I need subtitles too! But they don't necessarily have to be English subtitles.

Unfortunately I can't speak any asian languages. I've just went to a few Mandarim lessons in my school, but my schedule is incompatible with it. So, I can speak Portuguese (which is my native language), English, Spanish, French, can understand Itallian, and a very few words of japanese =P lol And I guess that's all.
So the answer would be: "None of Above (must rely on subtitles)" lol

- Portuguese (mother tongue)
- Spanish: can't pronunciate the spanish R (peRRo)
- Catalan: same as spanish xD
- Japanese: i've been studying for 2 yrs or so. (had to stop because of university entrance tests) don't have to rely on subs anymore (dict needed for some shows, specially when some tech vocabulary pops up), but i'm not fluent yet
- English: read/write, but cannot speak (my pronunciation sucks T_T)

Wish I could learn either Korean, Mandarin or Thai... :D

English - I speak at home, in school, with my friends, my pet doggie (hahaha) and basically everyone... so im pretty fluent in it.

Cantonese - my mom and a few of my close friends speak Cantonese to me.. when I was younger, my Cantonese sucked. but now, as i grew up, im now way better in it already =)

Malay - it's compulsory to learn the Malay language here in msia.. lolzz

Hokkien - i cant really speak Hokkien... im trying to pick up from Hokkein shows though.. but i still suck at it.. hahahahha. i speak a lil Hokkien with my parents and my grandmother..

Mandarin - i understand Mandarin but im not really good at speaking at it.. currently conversing wif a couple of my friends in Mandarin to improve it,,hehehe

Korean - learning it by myself. :)

I know none of the languages placed in the poll so I obviously chose to vote None of the Above. I have to rely on subtitles. :-(

Otherwise the languages I know are as follows:

Latvian - native tongue --> Sveiki visiem! (means "Hi everyone"!) :D
Russian - seeing as it's a post-Soviet state a lot of people know and speak it here
English
German

I love studying languages so I hope to learn either Japanese or Chinese when I have the time and the means. But I should really put some work into my poor, almost non-existant French before that. :lol

I speak and write Tagalog, English and Norwegian. I can understand a bit Danish, but only when it's written, and I can communicate a bit in Swedish. And now I'm trying to learn basic French (self taught, for now. But would seriously push through with it when I have the money to attend a proper school :P ). I took one year Nihongo when I was in college, but totally forgot it now... and I regret not continuing it

Mandarin, but I don't always understand their slangs and rely on the subtitles for that. I really do want to learn Japanese, though.

Finnish is my first language (surprise, surprise - I live in Finland!) but I can also communicate well in English, Swedish, German and Japanese. I also know tiny bits of other languages, too, for example French and Spanish, but I probably wouldn't be able to hold up a whole conversation - just say a sentence or two every now and then :')

At the moment I am trying my best with my Chinese self-studies, but it's soooo hard XD

German, English, Latin, Old Greek, Hebrew, the littlest bit of Japanese, some French, some Swedish, Italian readable.

The prettiest of them so far is Greek, though I'd really like to spend more time learning Jap.

I'm german so I speak german fluently
I can english, too...but with some mistakes (my grammar isn't very good)
I can better read to understand than hear/speak
because of that I can better understand something with english subtitles than english dub

I learn japanese by selfstudy and I can read all Hiragana, almost all Katakana, some Kanji and can understand some words and sentences

French - forced second language by provincial law
Italian - I have Italian roots so I learned it as another second language
I want to learn Japanese but I'm too lazy to read and too cheap to pay for lessons

Unfortunately, I still need the subtitle to watch all those nice wuxia movies.... ;-(

Interesting... I didn't expect more than half of the users here to rely on subtitles. I moved from China when I was less than 2 years old, but I speak fluently and can read most of the subtitles.

And I really attribute a large amount of proficiency in Chinese, especially reading, to watching dramas. By the time I stopped going to Chinese school, my reading skills were leagues above the rest of the kids, mostly just from watching dramas and reading the subtitles.

For anyone interested in improving their Chinese, I really do highly recommend watching dramas. Without subtitles if you can get by, or focusing at least ignoring them as much as is possible.

Oh, and my languages: English and Chinese fluently, French proficiently enough to have a conversation, read novels, write etc, though watching movies is a bit of a struggle sometimes for the slang.

first native language: korean
2nd native language: english
somewhat fluent language: japanese (still learning can get by somewhat without subs but still need subs to understand fully especially technical jargon however reading and writing sucks since my kanji knowledge sucks)
should know because of the number of years spent studying but can still only barely scrape by in: Mandarin & French

i'm quite surprised at the number of people who don't speak any of the 3 asian languages of the dramas found here. wow there must be a lot of nonasians here too. i'm quite surprised that asian dramas are so popular outside of asia. sort of proud too :P

since i'm fluent enough in english and korean to translate directly when someone is speaking it makes me think that i should move my lazy butt and become a fansubber...and yet i can't stand korean dramas...so i don't think i would be able to watch it long enough to translate it...hahaaa.. :P

I´m learning Japanese, but I still need to relay on subtitles.

I also speak fluently Estonian (as a mother tongue) and English.
I speak (but not so fluently) Russian and French and I understand German.
So it makes 6 languages.

(I hope to be able to speak in 10 language one day )
