I did quite a bit of java, using GUI and stuff (Swing is a b*tch, but GUI is always ugly, except in matlab, which is not a programming language). I have since worked with C/C++ and a few other languages. While java is easy to work with, your end product is not as nice unless you put in twice the effort as you would with another language. I also used to teach the intro programming class in java.

Still a student, so no full time job yet. ^^

Hmm... servelets and JSP, the only useful parts of java, I suppose. I skipped that because when I interned for the web dev company, they were doing C/C++ back end with Ajax/Javascript/PHP for the front end. It worked out quite well, but is rather more complicated (in my opinion).

Lol, maybe you have a bug or a bad plugin? That just sounds weird.

It depends on what kind of job your looking for and what field you want to work in.
Altough if you want to stay on top learning C# is a good choice for a programming language and one that will be enforced upon many fields because Microsoft wants it that way (Silverlight for webdev and XNA for game development)

I also have worked with Java but never really studied it, I'm a C / C++ programmer and can mostly figure out most programming languages it just takes a while longer than if I would code it in C++.

I don't know if I'd endorse learning C#, particularly. I think in industry, C++ is definitely the most useful language by far, and it's fairly straightforward to pick up other languages once you have a good base in programming languages (i.e. object-oriented, strict typing, functional, and a bunch of others...). Let me put it this way: I haven't been limited due to lack of C# knowledge, but I am also a student so they expect me to know a little and learn a lot.

I am a Team Leader for a major computer technology company. I work on application support for mainframe (os/390) technology and some midrange technology (as/400). I bet not many people even know what a mainframe is.

Yeah it depends on which field but I'm telling you up front that C# is really going to be pushed down everyone's throat by MS, especially in fields like web design and game development, I've sat around the table with peeps from MS trying to shove it down my throat, lol. I own a software company so I ain't telling lies, I might end up hiring a couple of you guys and girls and knowledge of C# ain't that bad of a choice, it's a better choice then Visual Basic or Lingo. If you really want to go back to basic and hardcore learn Assembly :D

But C/C++/C#, Java, Assembly, all good languages to learn.

but aiming to become a research/clinical scientist or a doctor. =D
Most likely to be the former though..but still, a long way to go!xD

...and becoming a cleaner/waitress is still likely given the state of the economy atm (where research grants and funds are sooo limited! @_@).

I am the managing editor for NewPages and I also work at my local community college as an in-class tutor for developmental English and math classes (they give it a fancier name, but really all I am is a tutor teaching people older and younger than me basic math - it can give a person nightmares) :P
