There is a free unrar utility by Alexander Roshal. But I think .7z is better than .rar. I have started using the 7ZA utility by Igor Pavlov sometimes instead of the ancient pkzip 204g that I have always used.

For understanding roughly 50% of the dialogue I think your estimate of 300-400 hours is accurate. Of course it depends on how hard one works during those hours and also the particular drama.

With Opera 9 I have noticed that after watching something on youtube the video file can be found in the CACHE4 directory (either with .flv or .tmp extension) so in other words it is downloaded and saved to disk automatically.

I'm not sure how the client decides how many peers to connect to (maybe it's configurable on some clients) but if there are 600 peers you really don't need to be connected to all of them. Having that many connections would be an inefficient use of bandwidth.
