hmm... if the video is 704 x 368 jus add the borders to make the movie 720 x 480, for example:

top: black border 56 pixels
left: black border 8 pixels
right: black border 8 pixels
bottom: black border 56 pixels

that should contain your movie within the screen's limits.

your dvd player will not support one or maybe more of the following:

1. divx files over 720p or 704 x 396
2. the file may have a different codec, even if the file says avi, it could be encoded with x264, or something that is not divx supported.

why not purchase a divx dvd player? they're readily available and cheaper than buying a video ipod. most can play avi files with divx codec 6 and below, no conversion needed so backup and play (but have yet to find a dvd player that will play mp4,mkv).
