One day, he desperately enters a lottery, trying to make enough money to pay for his child support, but his sense of self-disgust kicks in. However, his curiosity gets the better of him, and he later discovers that the ticket is a winner, turning him into a millionaire overnight. --Tokyograph (http://www.tokyograph.com/news/id-3349)

Message from your subber lzydata:
I was surprised to see no one interested in subbing this drama, so I'm doing it. Ep1 subs will be uploaded soon, definitely within the week. In the meantime, I'd be happy to hear from all of you out there who are interested in these subs (or not). Thanks.

Update 1: お待たせいたしました。Ep1 is up. If all goes well I will stick to this release schedule of uploading on Thursday.

Update 2: Ep2 up! I finished it early because I have something on tomorrow. Enjoy!

You may also like to know that Tachibana's mock blog featured in the drama is here (Japanese). You can even leave real comments.
Update 2.99: Sorry everyone but I've been kind of busy this week, so Ep3 subs will be available by tomorrow instead. Gomen!

Update 3: OK Ep3 is up.

Update 4: Ep4 up! Things are speeding up...

Update 5: Ep5 up! Sorry for the slight delay.
Update 5.99: Hey everyone, sorry but I'm pretty busy so I may have to delay the release of ep6 subs till Friday or (most likely) Saturday :salut:

Update 6: OK Ep6 is up!

Update 6.99: Due to changes in personal life circumstances, it looks like a Saturday release schedule from now on will be more realistic. Think of it this way: a longer wait but a better sub! haha. Thanks guys
Update 6.991: Hmm, it looks like our friends doing the Korean subs have also been delaying their release, so I have not managed to get the timings yet. If need be, of course, we can do them ourselves, but I'd prefer to wait and see rather than duplicate the work. So ep7 release is indefinitely postponed. Sorry guys.

Update 7: Finally, it's done! Sorry for the long wait. I am hoping to get ep8 done up by the weekend.
Update 7.99: Hmm I was too optimistic again: sometime this week. Btw it's been confirmed there are 10 eps, so final episode screens 5 September.

Update 8: Ep8. Ep9 should come next weekend.
Update 8.1: Updated guest cast list for the whole series.
Update 8.2: Realized I forgot to credit jdrama.cc for the transcript; sorry!

Update 9: Ep9; almost there! Some comments on this episode and the subbing below to preempt any possible feedback or complaints:
You may notice that this episode's writing is uncharacteristically sloppy and there are some major inconsistencies and puzzling areas, such as Kinoshita Ayano's behaviour, what Kakei-san thinks about the business venture, what Yoshimura Senior thinks about Kakei-san etc. etc. All of a sudden the production team seems to be in such a hurry to wrap up that they didn't really think things through. All I can say is I have tried to render everything as faithfully to the dialogue and text as possible, so it's not my fault! :P

Some more comments on specific terms:
Conclusion or epilogue 最終章 saishuushou: note that this is not the same as the 最終回 saishuukai last episode, which is ep10. This is a form of somewhat deceptive advertising that I think is becoming the trend among many dramas.
Archaeologist 考古学者 koukogakusha: of course, this should be paleontologist 古生物学者 koseibutsugakusha; possibly an intentional error.
San'oku Jiro 三億二郎: a cute pseudonym lost in translation, so I didn't attempt it in the subs. San'oku of course means 300 million, Jiro a common name with the Ji meaning "two."
Update 10: Finally, ep10! I hope you have enjoyed this show as much as I did - which I can't really say since I thought the last few episodes were disappointing. Well, here's hoping you at least enjoyed yourself on the whole

Also added Sakamoto Makoto's name to the guest list.

Thanks for all your hard work!

May I ask: why are you doing this if you can already understand it? Just for the sake of making a lot of people happy? If so you're succeeding :)

Also, how long does it usually take you to do this? Despite a few grammatical errors here and there, the quality is amazing! Is it a one man job or are you doing it with other people?

All interrogating done, thanks again!

Interesting questions from chris, above, especially how long this takes, and whether you do iit all solo.

Like others, I am really glad you picked this up. I have downloaded the first two eps, and tried watching them raw, but my Japanese is not really good enough to fully understand, and I miss so much.

I like softsubs, too, because once I have watched the show with the translation, I can turn them off and watch it again to really practice understanding without the crutch of the subs.

So, thanks for taking on this project! I look forward to future shows

Hi cassiopaeia and welcome HisNameIsChris!

While this time I'm doing the translating, subbing and editing myself, many other people and their efforts go towards making my work and other subbers' work faster and easier. For instance, timing the dialogue would normally take pretty long - and it's boring to do too - but somehow subbers in Korean are able to get them done so fast that I only need to borrow their work. Another great development, rokonoko's technique for capturing the Japanese transcript through the CC feed and now done by the former siantut at jdrama.cc, means that even difficult dramas can be subbed by people who are not really fluent but know enough grammar and have good dictionaries, and that even imperfect subbers like me can be sure of turning out 99%, or, if I get lucky, 100% 'accurate' subs - that means no stupid mistakes in comprehending the spoken Japanese. And of course, without people like toyotaku and Kzaru uploading the raw video, we would have nothing to watch or sub. I thank all my collaborators, whether they know it or not :P

(Speaking of this, I just realized that I've forgotten to credit tianj in the subs for always sending me the timings; I'll do it starting from ep3. You may notice that she's also the one who uploads 'sample' timings for the pilot episode of most of the dramas for people to try their hand at subbing it.)

How long do I take? Well, the release schedule I've adopted is about a week after the episode is broadcast, so it gives everyone involved enough time to come around: the raw, the transcript, the timings and even the Chinese sub from the usually quick people at Subpig, which I also refer to as a way to double-check my work. With all that, the actual subbing doesn't normally take more than a day. Also, I've recently modified and adopted a practice I read about in, I think, Stephen King's book On Writing: I come back to my 'first draft' a day or so afterwards so that my mind is cleared and I can better pick out any mistakes and inadequacies. Honestly, if I didn't do this, the subs would be only 85% or 90% correct, enough to get the gist but still frustrating to watch.

I imagine a native speaker or a very fluent one given all the resources I have can do the actual translation in half the time and with less mistakes. Which is why I say, if you are such a person, please consider helping out with the dramas with no takers yet!

As for my motivation, I suppose it's my way of trying to give back to the d-addicts community that regularly provides so many raws and subs for me to feed my drama addiction. On the surface it certainly looks like there are lots of contributors, but if you look closer you find that many dramas are unsubbed or else the subs aren't up to standard. (Engrish, many mistakes etc.) So I like the idea that hundreds of people now can appreciate Lotto 6 whereas you might've just skipped the drama and went off to watch something else otherwise.

Of course, I also do this for personal reasons. Subbing allows me to find and learn new vocabulary far more than if I just sat back and watched, being content with an imperfect understanding. It can't beat the rigour of formal Japanese lessons, but it's far more enjoyable  A big reason other people do it is to honour their idols, especially the Johnnys.

Ok I've blabbered on long enough.

Ah, thanks a lot for your reply, Izy! I now understand at least some of the behind the scenes work that I normally wouldn't think about. Thanks again for the sub, though I now understand I have to thank people such as toyotaku, Kzaru, tianj and others as well. thanks for giving those details! Certainly not blabbering :)

I'm hoping to learn Japanese myself once I finish school in a year's time - for now, its putting my head down and studying my school subjects. I kind of regret not picking it up as a school subject when I had the chance, but incase I suck at it I'd rather not risk my UAI (an Australian percentile rank for getting into university courses).

Though I now understand your Japanese actually isn't perfect yet, if its not too much trouble could you tell us how you got started? Was it just through formal lessons or did you get a start elsewhere?

Thanks from me, too, Izy!

I would love to help do subtitling, and that is actually a goal of mine for the future. Ima ha, muri desu. Jikan ga nai. So instead I am trying to learn what I can in the time I have--improve my Japanese, find out about how subtitlers do their craft, learn more kanji. Currently I sub for my own amusement, but nothing has been polished or finished enough for sharing on d-addicts. A big time-sink for me has been in trying to transcribe scripts. My Japanese is not good enough to pick up all the words. So, thanks for the tip about jdrama.cc.

OK guys Ep3 is up. Sorry for the delay. Lotto 6 is getting more and more unwatchable... by which I mean, of course, that Tachibana is turning from bad to worse :glare:

Oh, will it ever be 'perfect'? :P

Formal lessons have many advantages. One, they will probably be structured around some textbook, workbook and other materials, perhaps even an exam, so it's better than looking up something only when you come across it. Two, you (preferably) get a native speaker who can guide you on things like pronunciation, correct your mistakes, and practice with you. Three, it can get lonely studying by yourself, so you'll appreciate the company. These lessons can be expensive if taken privately, but I was fortunate that my university offered such courses, which could go up to around the JLPT 3 standard.

On the other hand, there are some things that you'll still need whether you have the benefit of formal guidance or not, things like patience (set realistic goals for yourself), perseverance (hang in there!), and the courage to make mistakes. For instance, you'll probably be expected to learn and master the hiragana and katakana alphabets by yourself. It's a hurdle you just have to overcome by yourself, as boring as it may get. A lot of what you'll do in formal lessons is rote work, but practice does make perfect.

(To be honest, I have some interest in learning Korean, but I haven't been able to overcome that same hurdle of learning the hangul. I find the phonetics tough.)

While formal lessons can benefit you tremendously with their structure and intensity, you'll also need constant practice just to have something to learn from, and also to keep up your enthusiasm. I think you'll really appreciate knowing the language only if you apply it outside the classroom in some way - dramas, manga, anime, native-speaker friends, whatever. If not it'll be useless to you, and you'll forget it in no time.

Hope this helps!
