Special thanks to: Rokonoko for Japanese subs (ep 1-3), gryzze and Kzaru for providing raws

Notes from translator:

Episode 3
There are some things that are just impossible to translate in this episode. I should say first of all that the opening scene with Saburo and Kensaku, I don't know exactly what the hit and miss is all about, but whoever lost the little game had to pick up the check, obviously.

For this next section, if you don't know about the writing system for Japanese, check out Wikipedia for kana and kanji.

Now the title of the book that Riko is writing is very difficult to write in kanji. Saburo first rewrites the title in hiragana, but Riko insists he write it in kanji. The title of the book is:

憂鬱な薔薇

(Yuuutsu na Bara) These characters have 15-29 strokes each, and, except the first one, are not part of the standard set of kanji that are taught in schools, which is why Saburo has a hard time with these.

Names are also difficult in Japanese and hers also contains a less than common kanji in the third character ri:

高見凛子

but is used in the word:

凛々しい

(ririshii), which means gallant.

I guess it's worth mentioning at this point that we have been using the Japanese order of family name first since the beginning of this series.

If you can't follow this or have specific questions that arise from this in the episode then please post on the thread, but make sure you hide it so you don't give anything away.
Episode 7:
When Riko asks Saburo to go buy her the continuation of the book she is reading he buys the third part of the book. The reason for this is that he thinks there are only two parts to the book.

Japanese publishers will split up long works into smaller parts, usually 2 or 3. When they are split into two the are marked:
and which correspond to Part 1 and 2 in English
When devided into thirds the are marked:
上 , 中 and which correspond to Part 1, 2 and 3, but part 3 is marked the same as the end of a two part novel, so when he goes to buy the next part of the novel, he thinks it's a two part book and buys the conclusion.
We respectfully request you not upload these subs into streaming sites. It will probably get done anyway, but we're still asking, so give us a break.

Not sure why this got left out, but as the translator I'm making the following request:

Please limit your comments on this thread to relevant input on the subs themselves. Please do not leave thank you comments or any frivolous comments. We will not respond to requests for updates or timeframes on releases. General comments and opinions about the show should be posted on the discussion thread. Thank you for your cooperation.

@ oni I was about to post that I was setting up a poll for our viewers to use instead of thank you posts to help cut back on that, but it looks like furransu has proven that fans don't seem to know how to read the thread. Maybe if it were in an srt file it would sink in.

On the issue of updates, sinc onidzuka has graciously handed me the reigns of this project, I will actually be giving updates on the project periodically, but that does not mean that there will be responses to inquiries about the status.

@ furransu No, the subtitles are now being done under the roof of my group, BadAsSubs. Until you butchered it, BadAsSubMission seemed like a clever thing to call our releases.

Thanks largely in part to the graciousness of zeldAIS of Skewed Studios (and a memeber of groups too numerous to list, apparently) we will be releasing the series as hardsubs.

With all that said, the first release is estimated to be June 15/16 depending on where you are at in the world.

so sorry to ask this, but just to clarify---there won't be any more softsubs to be released for this drama then? unless i am misunderstanding your post...just so i would not download the raws anymore in the future in case only hardsubs will be released by your group. thanks so much and more power!

Such silly rumors!

This is a softsub thread, so obviously softsubs will continue. I'll make sure to crack the whip with the translator for all the betas out there.

Thank you for the translation. This is a minor enhancement as it took me a long time to work out what scold means in this context and the word is rarely used in England and USAt. I am looking at episode 4 translation:-

414
00:23:35,141 --> 00:23:44,810
"For some reason, the expectation of other things tomorrow
would scold me to sleep."

In Japanese this is :-
何となく 明日は よき事あるごとく
思ふ心を 叱りて眠る

This meaning of these sentences is : whatever happens tomorrow there will be goodness. but the person is too pensive in expectation of tomorrow, this prevents the person from sleeping and the person should give up thinking about the things of tomorrow and go to sleep and let things be as they are beyond control. The 叱り translates to scold but scold is not often used in English as it is too strong. It is better to say telling me off to go to sleep and not think anymore of tomorrow.

Should this be translated and not follow the literal translation: As there will be goodness tomorrow somehow( or whatever happens), the thoughtfulness is telling me off as I should switch off and go to sleep.

How do you think?

This sentence repeats again later :-
459
00:27:45,166 --> 00:27:54,720
"For some reason, the expectation of other things tomorrow
would scold me to sleep."

I disagree in your assessment of the word scold and would consider 'to tell off' to involve more confrontational language.

I cannot speak for dialects in England, since I've not been there for any length of time, but I feel I could safely say in most dialects of American English 'to scold' would not be considered archaic or excessively strong and in fact the connotation of the word to me is that the person being reprimanded is a child who is being admonished by someone who is irritated, or something resembling that situation. I would say that the word might be less common than a generation ago, but the language in the tanka would predate even that since in modern Japanese 思ふ is written 思う and the author died in 1912.

Having said that, I do think the translation of the poem could stand to be improved as indicated by the note for episode 4. I had planned to do that for before the hard sub version was released, but hadn't had a chance to do so. Once I finish ep 8 I'll be sure to go back and look at them more carefully.

How about this? The song 石川啄木[悲しき玩具] goes:-

「何となく明日はよき事あるごとく
思ふ心を
叱りて眠る。」

The English :-

「Whatever happens, tomorrow brings goodness
Contemplation and mindfulness
Scold me to sleep or (Chide me to sleep)」

Chide may be more suitable for 100 year old poetic expression.
Thanks for the subs , great job in racing against time.

I had considered chide, but went with scold because it was more common, but now you think I should go with the less common word?

And here 歌 actually means (tanka) poem rather than song.

By the way, I'm not altogether certain that the word is being translated right at all, so this could be a moot point anyway...

On second thoughts I think 叱 means "shout at". It is an expression that the mind has voices in the head (= expectation of goodness tomorrow means tomorrow does not come soon enough) it has the effect of shouting at you to go to sleep as sleep is what is between now and tomorrow's goodness.

So:-

「Whatever happens, tomorrow brings goodness
Contemplation and mindfulness
Shout at me to sleep」

Here is what I draft , for the excerpt of 「一握の砂」= "A handful of sand" at the end of Episode 4 ("Sand" in this context means The passing of life is in search of things (sand = things that people seek) and when one grab at the opportunities they slip between one's fingers :-

「いのちなき砂のかなしさよ」
「さらさらと」
「握れば指のあひだより落つ」

The sadness of life as the passing sand
"Sarasara" and ...
When it is grasped, slips between my fingers

(sarasara = rustling sound of sand which also means murmur hence the sadness)

Download an episode of the drama, then download the relevant srt file. Use the same filename for both. When you view the drama avi file with a player like Zoom Player, VLC, MPC etc. the srt file will show up as subtitles.

Quick update for those of you waiting for ep 8 (and 9)

Our translator is reviewing the subs for 1-7 before they are hardsubbed. Once that's complete we should be back on track or maybe he's going to alternate between the two, but either way this will slow things down a tad.

Subs are still coming. I direct all questions, and comments to Oni's signature.

Good luck with hard subbing those 石川啄木verses will be hard to translate, I have a couple of suggestions above.

OOH! Double-shot subs today! Thanks!

I'll admit, I'm quite enjoying this version (and I've seen and enjoyed the Korean movie). Though I can understand the bad rap it's getting from viewers (and apparently it's tanking in the ratings), I really think the characters are engaging. Love RENA TANAKA!!!!

Just a quick question. Is this a drama worth downloading to watch?

Thank you for finishing the subtitles for this drama. It was a lot of fun. While I can see why some people have criticized this drama (the main flaw I think is that it should have ended at maybe 9 or 10 episodes), I really enjoyed it. I especially liked the "Love Letter" part in episode 10. Truly touching and you translated it very well!

Thanks again!

in the usa we would say lulls. here is the dictionary definition: . lulled, lull¡¤ing, lulls
v.tr.
1. To cause to sleep or rest; soothe or calm.
2. To deceive into trustfulness:
but the sentence would be more understandable like this. "for some reason, the expectation of tomorrow's outcome, would lull me to sleep.
thanks for all your hardwork.
surplusletterbox wrote:Thank you for the translation. This is a minor enhancement as it took me a long time to work out what scold means in this context and the word is rarely used in England and USAt. I am looking at episode 4 translation:-

414
00:23:35,141 --> 00:23:44,810
"For some reason, the expectation of other things tomorrow
would scold me to sleep."

In Japanese this is :-
ºÎ¤È¤Ê¤¯ Ã÷ÈÕ¤Ï ¤è¤Ê¤¢¤ë¤´¤È¤¯
˼¤ÕÐĤò ß³¤ê¤ÆÃߤë

This meaning of these sentences is : whatever happens tomorrow there will be goodness. but the person is too pensive in expectation of tomorrow, this prevents the person from sleeping and the person should give up thinking about the things of tomorrow and go to sleep and let things be as they are beyond control. The ß³¤ê translates to scold but scold is not often used in English as it is too strong.

This sentence repeats again later :-
459
00:27:45,166 --> 00:27:54,720
"For some reason, the expectation of other things tomorrow
would scold me to sleep."
