Looking for a translator to finish last three episodes!
Hey guys. According to episode 8, Hachi-One will air until July 19th which means there are 11 episodes. I want you all to know that I will be subbing episode 8 but I will not be able to sub the last two because I will be on a trip and don't want to make you wait. I did intend to sub this whole drama but because of the unexpected off-week and unknown number of episodes I can't. Regular watchers, don't worry because I'll find someone but I want to let you know. Potential fansubbers, you don't need permission from me. Just do it. I included a small how to subtitle post.

SBK is hardsubbing this drama too: http://fansubs.shibukai.net/

Summary:
http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Hachi-One_Diver
Basically, it is about a guy who is trying to become a pro Shogi player. He is also surrounded by mysterious and cute girls.

Learn about Shogi:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shogi

Episode 1 Notes:
The Shogi pieces he has in the bag is called 退会駒 (Withdrawal Pieces). Basically, when a rising Shogi player who is aiming to become a pro at the Shogi foundation withdraws (does not graduate) he or she receives these. It serves as a symbol of frustration and setback. <-Is explained also in Episode 2.

Episode 2 Notes:
真剣(Shinken) means True Sword (as opposed to an unsharpened or wooden sword) but it also means "serious" which is the modern day definition. This drama often uses a pun with this word and in the Shogi salon it is said to cover up the fact that they are gambling. When you hear 真剣(True Sword) in this drama, it means a person who is gambling with Shogi unless it is used as a type of pun.

Similar to Karate, Go, etc. the players are ranked from weakest (15 kyu) to strongest (9-dan). A professional is 4-dan and up.

A huge thanks to Rokonoko for providing the Japanese subs!

Translated Interview with Soyo ("Akihabara's Champion")/Miruku (Maid) Nakashizu's Role played by Riisa Naka:
Translated from: http://wwwz.fujitv.co.jp/81/index.html

--The roles you perform: Akihabara's "Challenger" [Soyo] and the business trip maid [Mikuru] are totally different. What things do you have to keep in mind?

If they were similar people, I think it would be hard but Soyo and Miruku are totally opposite in looks and personality. Makeup, costumes, hair styles are also completely different. I don't think "I need to change my feelings" because when I change into each costume I become that role. When performing, I must be careful of my voice. When I am in contact with Sugata (Junpei Mizobata), Soyo uses a low and sharp voice like "Comeback!" but Miruku says "Master~" in a sweet voice.

--When forming your role, it seems like you used your own ideas.

When playing Miruku, I thought "If I were a boy, what kind of girl would I want to come to my room?" I've never been to a maid cafe or seen a real maid but I thought a devoted younger sister would be good (LOL). Besides the tone of voice, I did small gestures so that if even a girl saw me she would say "Cute!" and think of me like a little sister. I even had the wild idea, "I wish I was this type of girl." (LOL). I am the eldest daughter so I was pretty relieved. If I had to say it, I would say my personality is close to Soyo. Miruku is made up but when I am Soyo, I feel like I can just act natural.

--Were you resistant against Miruku's maid clothes or the big breasts setup?

Actually, I wasnt against it, I enjoyed it. (LOL). From the start, I was attracted by cosplay so being able to wear Miruku's costumes makes me very happy! I get pretty excited! There is emphasis on my chest but it's a drama so it's fine.

--Even though your breasts appear, it's not erotic. Mr. Junpei Mizobata (Sugata) said that is interesting. What do you think about him?

I'm a shy person so I don't really start conversations with other people but Junpei-kun is also 18 years old and we both came to Tokyo so because we have those common characteristics he is easy to talk to. Our tastes don't go together though. LOL. For example, he likes traditional Japanese music but I like western music. He likes dubbed movies but I like subtitled movies. And we always fight, "No, this way is definitely better!"

--It's like you are the older sister and he is the younger brother.

That might be right. Actually, Junpei-kun has an older sister so he is a younger brother and he might get mad that I say this but he's kind of like a little brother to me.

--But, when you are filming it's a complete change and you two get serious.

Shogi is really interesting. I watched TV Shogi lectures but in the screen the atmosphere is different. There are sound effects and various lines that are violent so it's some serious Shogi. At one look, it looks like a boring game but it actually is quite intense. If I face the Shogi board, I naturally become tense.

--Even during your breaks, you and Junpei sometimes play Shogi. Do you remember the rules.
At first I didn't know the rules at all but while watching I came to understand. The rules are quite basic but in 10 seconds a Shogi instructor can imagine hundreds of place to move but I can only think of one move when I try my best. So I definitely can't read ahead in the game. LOL. But while playing, the instructor taught me about various movies like "This move is called the badger," so I learned.

--It is said that you can tell the strength of someone just by the way he or she places the pieces. Did you have to bear that in mind when playing the remarkable Soyo?

First stretch the muscles along your back and making them stiff. With the way to place the pieces, Sugata did it manly and slammed the pieces down but Soyo did it ladylike. Make your arm stiff and place it down cooly. Recently, I think I can place them without becoming nervous.

--Finally, is there anything you want to say to the people who watch your show?
Personally, the thing I want you to look at is Miruku's costumes. I want you to look at them why saying "Even though she is a maid, why is she playing Shogi?" And then there is the drama's entirety which is Sugata's turn-around. While he gets stronger, how will he turn out and how will everything develop? I look forward to it and I want a lot of people to watch!
Episode 2 subs released in one day. They are translated, properly timed and edited by me. Enjoy.
Episode 3 subs posted. This episode gets a little perverted. :lol The only thing to take note is that I use the Shogi notation from Wikipedia so it looks weird but you can pretty much ignore it.
Episode 4 subs up! Just a side note but I wrote a "4 part story" but you can read more about the details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kishotenketsu Doesn't really matter though. Don't forget to give me some love on the forum!
Episode 5 subs are out! Big thanks to the person at Jdrama.cc!
Episode 6 subs are posted. It's starting to get interesting!
Episode 7 out. I thought this was a pretty good episode so I decided to get it done. Almost to the climax!

Episode 8 is out. This episode has a little lesson on Hanakotoba or Flower Language in it. You can read the details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanakotoba

Thanks a lot for subbing this, I actually used the Google translator on the Japanese subs because I didn't think anyone was subbing the series and I liked the first episode even when I watched it RAW. I'm really looking forward to seeing it with good subs!

Hikaru no Go is what attracted me to this drama, not the girl in the maid costume, NO REALLY it was Hikaru no Go, but the maid is a definite plus 8)

Thanks burento5 not only for the great job on the subs but also for the interesting interview with Riisa Naka. I really want to learn more about Shogi. BTW if you haven't already heard about it Hikaru no Go is a really interesting anime about GO.

Hey guys. I am going to wait until Rokonoko provides the Japanese subs because I can make sure my translation accuracy is great and it's much faster. So, give it a day or two after he releases the subs.

In the meantime, answer the poll.

I started to watch this drama because of Shogi, but if the story and characters didn't grab my attention it would have been just a single episode, so while I voted in the poll for The girl (Naka Riisa), it's really 3 things after seeing the first two episodes
1) Naka Riisa
2) Shogi
and I am a D-Addict!

Thanks for subbing this series and sorry for all the Emoticons but I really am enjoying this show. :w00t:

Haha, for SBK subs, I've started translating by ear. Its so much harder with the yakuzas rolling their tongue and not having closed captioning script to tell me what they're saying. XD Oh man, ep 3 is gonna take a lot longer than expected.

I understand your pain, burento!

OK! I made an interesting discovery when I had trouble with one line. This time around I asked tianj for the timings (which some of you might know come with the Korean subs). The interesting thing is these Korean subtitles. If you plug them into http://www.excite.co.jp/world/korean/ which uses the Amikai engine and translate them back to Japanese, they are almost identical (sometimes the exact same) as the Japanese CC. I feel as if a Korean fansubber plugged the Japanese CC broadcast into Amikai and then simply edited it a little.

Didn't notice at first but by the 2nd episode the series showed a good resemblance visually to Liar Game, seems like they both had the same director.

Yes. I noticed this too. The camera moves looks very similar to Liar Game in order give the drama suspense and action. Like you said, one of the directors and the screenwriter is the same.

I have requested for subs from jDrama.cc. Hopefully the subs will be captured.

Thanks for episode 4!

burento5 wrote:Episode 4 subs up! Just a side note but I wrote a "4 part story" but you can read more about the details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kishotenketsu Doesn't really matter though. Don't forget to give me some love on the forum!

The Japanese original of the example quoted on that page is much better if you can read a little Japanese:

起 : 京の五条の糸屋の娘
承 : 姉は十六妹十四
転 : 諸国大名は弓矢で殺す
結 : 糸屋の娘は目で殺す

Talk between Shibata Yokusaru and Watanabe Akira

Postby takodori » Fri Jun 06, 2008 1:43 pm

Good sub-reading material if you like this drama.

You can find the talk between Shibata Yokusaru, the writer of manga version and Watanabe Akira, professional shogi title holder translated from Japanese into English in DAILY YOMIURI linked below;

"A meeting of shogi minds 'Hachiwan Diver' manga artist plays against a master"

I will download that episode and try and fix the timings. Thanks for telling me!

Episode 6 will air on Saturday! That's why there is no RAW out.

If you need some Riisa go to this page:

Click Next and Back to go through the pictures. There is also an arrow down towards the bottom left that will let you see previous weeks.

Ah! I totally forgot. I'll try it out.

Also, episode 7 has not aired yet. That "Episode 7" on the torrent list is actually episode 6.

Will start translation by tomorrow.
