Japanese (Original) Subtitles for Japanese Dramas

Hi, everyone!

As you might have noticed I started posting original Japanese subtitles for Japanese drama.

In this post, I’ll be providing the links to my releases. I'm going to finish all the series for which I post.

Using this opportunity I want to thank RAW providers for making it all possible.

rokonoko: i am disappointed more people have not shown appreciation for your subs. as i see it, there are at least two audiences that can immediately benefit. japanese hearing-impaired individuals, or even older jp people who cannot hear well. AND students studying jp that want to READ and SEE kanji rather than just listen to it.

btw, i tried opening the japanese subs into subtitle editor programs, but it wont work~~ can this be fixed?? anybody could help me?

I think these can be a big help for translating purposes and also for people studying Japanese. Thank you for posting these subs.

I looked at the subs for Lost Time Life and they seem to be exact word-for-word subtitles, rather than abbreviated subs. Does that seem to be true for all the subs you're posting?

They're a great help, since my reading skills are so much better than my pathetic listening skills.

Abbreviated subtitles? The description in the individual drama posts imply that these are the Japanese broadcast close-captioned subs and would therefore contain word-for-word dialog, similar to American CCs.


Edit: I've discovered VLC isn't very good with subs, these work great with Media Player Classic and ffdshow. Also, my attempts to add ruby destroyed the time codes, which was the problem. But, then I don't really need the reading for 'haha' that much... Notepad always works as a .srt editor. ^^;

The files are in Unicode 16 bit Little Endian (UTF-16LE) encoding. VobSub renders them just fine (my version is 2.23). If you want to edit them it's better to convert them to SHIFT-JIS encoding. For this purpose I use MadEdit (http://madedit.sourceforge.net).

As the origin of the subs which I am posting is TV closed captions I wouldn't say they are exact word-for-word subtitles. You see, already in CCs there are sometimes diffierences with the actors words. But they are usually minor and subs are almost word-for-word subtitles. Just check subs for Chiritotechin - I was very impressed by how close subs are to the audio.

W-w-w-w-wait... Are you saying you're able to extract the CC signal from these RAWs? We've always believed that this signal was lost in the ripping process. Care to share how you do this?

Wow! Very well written! Some questions and thoughts:

1. You need to basically be in Japan to receive 1seg streams from the Japanese TV networks? Or are you receiving the 1seg streams from the Internet?

2. I thought you were pulling the CC stream from the RAWs on D-Addicts because earlier you thanked the RAW providers for providing the RAWs. That made me think you were actually using them.

3. If you record the Japanese TV shows to DVR or rent videos from a video store, would you be able to extract the CC stream from the sources? At least in the U.S., when I play a DVR'd episode of a show, I can stil read the CC. Wondering if it is the same in Japan?

Yes, you'll have to be in Japan. 1seg is a form of digital terrestrial broadcast.

Sorry for confusion. I thanked the RAW providers partially for giving me something to sync the subs to and also for the fun I have by watching the dramas. Without it I wouldn't be interested in Japanese subtitles in the first place ; )

First, if you rent a video from a video store you get a dvd. And some dvds have subtitles included. But some don't have.
And in Japan, if you record a TV show to DVR, you basically record an encoded mpeg2 stream. And you can watch it only on a DVR (don't sure whether it should be the same one on which you recorded it). There is that copyright protection scheme implemented in Japan which limits access to the raw mpeg2 stream. Maybe the RAW providers managed to bypass it, maybe not. It would be great if someone of them commented on this issue. Here is a little more about the protection:

Once again, rokonoko thank you very much for a major contribution to the subtitle community.
I assume this will be of benefit to many people for both timing (haha take that Chinese timers now we get timing a few days earlier J/K tianj ) and translation aspects as well as for the hearing impaired.

Sigh unfortunately I wasn't too successfull with my new fansub-group Google+WW(edits).
LOL that would have been funny/horrible... but google-trans is harder to edit then I expected.

@rokonoko: You mentioned you watched Chiritotechin while testing the subs... Coincidentally that's the show I tried to google-sub!

Oh and thanks for the excellent 1seg tutorial!

@furransu: I assume you have figured out how to edit/view the subtitles already, however,
I had no problem viewing them with Aegisub. However I had to save as .ass not .srt. SubtitleWorkshop did not work for me. Neither did copy/pasting into a asci text file. VobSub worked fine for viewing.

This is absolutely amazing. Although my drama isn't listed (yet), I did a test run on another one. It can't be loaded into Subtitle Workshop as is (I read the solution), but that's besides the point. As a visual learner, having the text like this is such a joy.

Let me also express my appreciation to you for uploading these subs. These are especially helpful to me because my problem is unusual: my reading skills are improving faster than my listening skills. With these subs I can attach accurate meaning to sound without mentally switching back to English. As you know, Nihon-go has so many homophones (words that sound alike) and I'm still slow in picking the correct meaning from context, sometimes even combining separate words or breaking a single word into two or more. But when the kanji flashes underneath I know instantly what was meant without having to read the entire sentence.

I have just one question. Are you located within the continental US (not Hawaii or Guam)? If so, can you tell me how you capture terrestrial Japanese network broadcasts? I have the receiving equipment (1eliptical, two round and a round spare if necesary). I just need to be pointed at the correct bird. I have been trying to find it for months.

No, I am actually located in Japan. And the TV broadcast format from which I get the subs is a local one. It doesn't utilize satellites.

if u use subtitle workshop, here is the way to open it, open the file in text, save as ANSI, then choose Shiftjis in subtitle workshop, and it shows up xD

Do you have to OCR the 1seg subtitles? If so, I wonder if that is the reason why certain characters are consistently not recognized. The characters 一 and 口 are missing, else your subtitles are quite accurate.

That's an interesting question indeed. I don't OCR the subs. I extract the subs in text form. The reason why some characters are missing lies in the concept of 'gaiji'. There are some characters which are missing in Japanese encoding. And during broadcasts such characters are transmitted in form of graphical information rather then text. I don't know why such common kanji (the two you've mentioned) are transmitted as 'gaiji'. Sometimes they are transmitted as normal text. One reason maybe that it's some kind of watermark protection scheme applied to text. But that's probably just me being paranoid : )))

I would not be surprised if it is just NHK. NHK is seen as the authority of Japanese culture throughout Japan television (which is why they probably receive more complaint phone calls than all other TV networks combined.) If they were to compromise even closed captioned kanji for the sake of simplicity and/or compatibility, it would deviate from their purpose in life. I haven't seen these subs yet, but I would figure that they would at least add some furigana for those gaiji characters.

Awesome. Thank you so much for providing the Japanese subs. When I watch with English subs, I tend to zone out the spoken Japanese, and basically learn nothing, gain no effective listening practice from it. This will be a huge help towards actually understanding what's being said, particularly for the jidaigeki like Atsuhime.
