Joshi Deka! [Eng Subs] (Complete)

Postby henna_juna » Tue Oct 30, 2007 3:01 am

Sapporo_girl and I are pleased to present english soft-subs for the "Joshi Deka!" series.
Timed scripts were provided by tianj

update: episode 10 subs posted (10:10 2008/04/24 GMT-5)

Done! Thanks for your patience! I hope you all have been able to enjoy the dorama better!

Translator's and Editor's Notes:
(2008/04/17, ep 9)
Kagemusha, literally a shadow warrior, is actually a decoy, not some fancy warrior. I could be wrong, but it may be a modern word born from Akira Kurosawa's film of the same name set in the warring states period, not actually a word from those times. In the movie, a commoner is trained to impersonate a dying warlord to make his enemies believe he is still strong and in power. If someone is more knowledgeable about this, by all means share :P
(2008/02/07)
Sapporo_Girl explains about the resort hotel: "The hotel in question is a government resort hotel that can be used by ALL national officials, including the police. So it's a social welfare hotel."
(2007/10/29)
This drama incorporates many flashbacks (E). If your player supports tags, then flash-back text (and internal monologue text) will be italicized (T).

Unless it is crucial to the storyline, we will not indicate the individual detective ranks, with Aoyama and Sakura being the exception (E).

Yoroshiku onegaishimasu (greeting) could be considered "Please take care of me" (E) as in a courtesy to the people you will be working with (T).

The Keishichou refers to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (MPD in the subs). The Keisatsucho is the National Police Agency (NPA in the subs), which is akin to the FBI in America. The special agent in charge of the investigation is called the Kanrikan. In the subs, we will refer to him directly as Kanrikan instead of "general manager," which is the literal translation (E & T).

Sakura calls Aoyama "Aonegi" because he's tall and thin like a green onion (E).
Katahira Nagisa has been portraying a female private detective for a number of years (E).

In their first car ride, Sakura uses the word "tsukkome" when she's lying about her age. The word originated in a two-man stand-up comedy routine. One (Sakura as Boke) makes a far-fetched statement and Kurumi (as Tsukkomi) is supposed to point out that the statement is stupid. The routine progresses this way (E).

Gendo Senki is a Japanese anime film loosely based on the third and fourth books of Ursula K. Le Guin's <i> Earth sea </i> series (E).

Thanks, I've just scanned through the first episode and the
subs look great. Nice work translating!

I also like the subs timing. A mistake some timers
make is to believe the subtitle should be on the screen for precisely
the length of time it takes the character to say it, which often is
not enough time to read it. These subs look to be timed for
someone, like me, who has not taken a speed reading course.
Thanks again.

I can't take credit for the timings, but I did try to tweak a few lingering ones from the template...the template must be made for korean-tv or something.

i'm glad you enjoyed it though! thanks for the feedback!

Tianj did an excellent job on the timings! Thank you!

Translation is more of an art than a science. Sometimes a stuffed mouthful of colloquial Japanese might only be a small bite of colloquial English. Unfortunately for poor subbers, in order to get things done, they need to weave between the two languages. Japanese/English "inversion" is grueling. I don't know how they do it. Henna_Juna and the others are amazing people. I can only function in one of the languages at a time.

Thanks very much for subbing this series. It appears quite more complicated than it seemed at first glance... Just 2 remarks: maybe it would be convenient if the links to the subs could be accessed via the HennaJuna Fansub Group page; and if there could also be some release status on this page, it would be wonderful. Such info updating is regularly done by many teams such as Doremii or B.O.N., and it is quite convenient for us fans :)

I'll try to keep your apprised :P i'm close to 2/3 of the way through episode 2. i'm not sure it's any more convenient to keep the wiki updated...i assume that's what you mean by the group page...though we aren't really a group. once i get through the episode, i'll send it off to my partner. she's usually fast, not to put any pressure on her. don't rush her though. and try not to rush me. with regards to getting this drama on the subtitle index, that's beyond my know-how ;P

The team didn't say they dropped so they don't drop. So we must be patient :) There are so many shows to watch, anyway.... And quality subs take time.

Please don't worry, everyone. We aren't dropping the series. We'll get the episodes to you as soon as we can. We absolutely love Joshi Deka!
