Jikou Keisatsu Season 2 [Eng Subs] (Complete)

Postby kazuya5661 » Mon May 07, 2007 11:36 pm

Jikou Keisatsu Season 2 (Kaette kita Jikou Keisatsu)

I'm back to sub the second season of Jikou Keisatsu (The Return of Jikou Keisatsu)! Hope you enjoy! I will be releasing soft subs. If anyone wants to alter them, use them for hard subs, or otherwise, please feel free! I would appreciate a message if you do intend to use them, though.

I'm looking forward to another season of crazy antics, wordplay, and idioms which have beaten to death. No doubt it will be difficult and many things will be changed, but I hope to preserve as much as possible without making it impossible to read. I'm always open to constructive criticism and suggestions. Please feel free to stroke my ego as much as possible as it usually gets the subtitles done faster, too. :thumleft:

I'd like to thank gryzze for always seeding many great series and tianj for providing me with the timing for last season and all of the timing for this season.

HaroRangers is releasing hard subs for this series based on these translations, although the translations may be editted at their discretion. So if you like hard subs better, check 'em out!

Technical notes:

This season a few minor points were changed from Season 1. The city is now spelled Sohbu (instead of Soobu, Soubu, or So-bu) since that is how it is written in the background of episode 1 (they even had some sort of slogan using each of the letters).

Even though it may seem unnatural for some, I stuck with using people's names verbatim (i.e., with family name first and personal name last, keeping suffixes whenever possible). I did it this way simply for a lack of confusion on my part.

I have kept more Japanese words since I feel that most watching this series know what they mean. (i.e., I kept "Janken" instead of putting something like "rock, paper, scissors" because I need to shorten the subtitles whenever possible)

All references to money have been made in terms of US dollars using the simple conversion factor of 100 yen = 1 US dollar.

Square brackets [] are used to explain things which are written on screen.

Curved brackets () are used to further explain the meaning of certain words or situations.

Italics are used to distinguish between what is being said in the background versus what is being said in the foreground. However, sometimes both occur at the same time, and I used hyphens, - -, to envelope the background phase since partial italics aren't compatible with every subtitle program.

EPISODE 5 NOTES:
Some words to make sure you know beforehand so that it makes more sense (sorry for the brevity; please feel free to look up more descriptive/accurate summaries online):

(Restroom/Toire no) Hanako-san: This is a well-known ghost in Japan said to appear in women's restrooms. They say she's a Kappa (see below) with a red skirt.

Kappa: Mythological being, perhaps somewhat similar to a troll in the Western world. A kappa wears a plate on its head and always has a distinctive hairdo.

Azarashi: Translated directly, it means seal or sea lion. This shows up in Ep. 2 with the "sea lion skin pouch". Here it is used as something the ghoul says, kind of like "Boo!" or "Whoao~". Usually a ghost in Japan says "Urameshiya~" ADDENDUM: I just found out there was a horror drama about 10 years back called "Eko Eko Azaraku". No doubt this is playing off that. I typed it as "Echo" instead of "Eko" since I didn't know about it at the time. Oops :P

Goukon: This is a group date with an equal amount of guys and girls (usually at least 3 guys and 3 girls) going out together. Very common in Japan.

MOD EDIT: Episodes 6-9

Thank you for picking up this project. Not only is this probably the best show on this season, but your translations are very natural sounding and enhance the puns in this show. Keep up the good work!

Thank you kazuya5661.

The first season remains one of the favorites at my house. My wife has asked many times if anyone was doing the second season, and was so sad to hear that no one had announced.

I will surprise her tonight with episode one. It will be a great evening.

Thank you so much for helping us enjoy our much loved series.

Thanks very much for the subs, kazuya5661! We all appreciate your hard work.

If I may make one critical suggestion, though…

All references to money have been made in terms of US dollars using the simple conversion factor of 100 yen = 1 US dollar.

Personally, I would strongly prefer that money references be given accurately – that is, as YEN, with the actual numbers used in the dialogue.

For one thing, the "simple conversion factor" you're using is just plain wrong. 100 yen is NOT 1 US dollar – it's only about 82 cents at the moment, because the current conversion rate is just over 120 yen per dollar. Now that may seem like an insignificant difference for very small amounts, but the difference (and therefore the inaccuracy) is magnified as the amount grows larger. For example, ¥20,000,000 is quite a lot less than $200,000, it's only about $164,878; and ¥50,000,000 isn't even close to $500,000, it's only $412,224 and some change.

No doubt some people will say that's nitpicking; but when the frequently-cited (and highly inaccurate) "100 yen = 1 US dollar" conversion results in figures that are off by nearly 20%, I would respectfully disagree.

Besides, nobody watching a Japanese TV show thinks that they're referring to US dollars anyway – so why not give them the YEN amounts that are actually being referred to? You've acknowledged that most of the people watching Jikou Keisatsu understand some Japanese phrases and words (such as Janken), so why assume that they need to have the money "translated?" If for some bizarre reason they care what the US dollar amount really is, then they can look it up themselves.

And for reference, the yen symbol (¥) is produced (on a Windows PC, anyway) by holding the ALT key and typing 0165 on the number pad. It's really very easy.

Anyway, that's my ¥2.

Awesome. Brilliant. Thank you.

I also watched the first episode without subs, and didn't get a lot of the wordplay and such. I'll keep watching without, though, I think, for the challenge! What's awesome about you providing soft subs, though, is that I can now go back and read over the files when I'm done to see what I missed! Thanks again!

And I also agree with the money statement above. I get weirded out whenever I see dollars mentioned in Asian movie subtitles - especially if it's a language I have no familiarity with. "Are they talking about American dollars, or is that just the subtitler's choice?" I always wonder.
That said, the Australian dollar exchange has been basically the same as your conversion rate for the past couple months, so your system makes a lot more sense to us Australians.

Cheers.

I didn't watch the special. I just assumed it was a rehash of old scenes from the first series. Does it have new material? I can't make any promises right now because of my current schedule, but if it has new material, I might do it.

I did watch the special, and yeah, it's just a collection of short scenes from the first series. As much as I love this show (and I really do love it) I didn't bother to keep the "special" after seeing it. And if it were up to me, I wouldn't bother subbing it.

And a thank you for your episode notes on the first page. Just my opinion, but I think this is where they belong, rather than plastered all over the screen, blocking out the acotrs, and forcing the viewer to still pause, or worse... rewind the action in order to read up on some trivia.

Kazuya I hope you are ok. I've resorted to watching Kuitan until the I can watch Jikou Keisatsu again.

Hello :) My first Post here :) I am from Germany.

I really, really hope that kazuya is ok, not sick or worse :(

I love Jikou Keisatsu very much and i hope, that he can translate the last 4 episodes very soon. Isn´t it very unusual that he doesn´t answer since june?

RGVEDA don't do this.....this wouldn't help Kazuya at all...and the sub wouldn't come out much quicker......its doesn't show any appreciation at all....... just thank Kazuya for all of his hardwork till episode 5......and show some patience for the last 4 episode.....don't push Kazuya like that......he got life you know....he might have some work to do other than subbing this series....just be patience

Hi :)

I think when we write in here, that would kazuya show, that here are some fans from his work :)

Of course there is the real life. I understand that!

But it would be very helpful for the Fans, if he write why he didn´t translate the other 4 episodes till now or when he could do that.
