Suna no Utsuwa [Eng Subs] (Complete)

Postby gromitt » Sun Jan 21, 2007 6:41 pm

Drama details can be found here - http://jdorama.com/drama.811.htm or at dramawiki - http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Suna_No_Utsuwa

Translated and timed: gromitt
~ Dedicating this to Waga Eiryo & Nakai Masahiro ~

Much indebted to Beth Cary's translation from the book, for the part on the "blizzard" prose.

Trivia (spoilers)
There are much differences between the book and drama. In fact, this drama version is a remake of the 1974 movie version. The expansion of the story - details that werent described in the novel - were the work of movie director Yoshitaro Nomura, scriptwriter Shinobu Hashimoto and novelist Seicho Matsumoto. The movie was a major success and achievement (for its use of soundtrack music to accentuate the emotive aspects of the film), and the drama production took great pains to re-make it for drama. They didnt let their predecessors down.

There is also a reason why the leper story was changed to arson and murder in the drama version. In November 2003, there was a furor in Kumamoto prefecture where an Onsen turned away a group of visitors who were formerly infected with leprosy. The writers and production team deemed it too sensitive an issue to bring up again - the drama was slated to air in early 2004 and the incident happened in late 2003.

Also, the arson case in the drama was based on short story by author Seicho Matsumoto. And incidentally, that arson story was based on a real life incident that happened in Tsuyama.
I've just posted Ep 2 subs.

Hey Natsume Maya,

I'll wait for you to seed ep 3. Don't think I can download anything today... I'll grab it tomorrow or after :D

By the way, you mentioned in your earlier post that you have up to episode 7. Does that mean you don't have the last 3 episodes? Which means we might not get to finish this drama to the end?

I already made a request for seeding episodes 8 to 11. But if everyone who wants those subs should download the torrent episode 5 ( episode 3 is already on thanks to Natsume Maya and episode 4 is not there yet). Doing so it will show in the "top 10 torrents requering seeding" and people who get thoses torrents will know we are waiting for them and will know there is subs going on. 8)

I´ll seed ep 04 tomorrow. :-)

The thing I'm most impressed about is that the subs for just the first episode has been downloaded only 30 times and your still continuing, I have alot of respect for you doing a show due to the quality, not the popularity. I hope this show gets batched up or made jsotw so more people have access later.

Hopefully you find some seeders for episodes 8-11 as well, this show seems like its going to end up being one of my favourites.

Dekiai: Search for "Suna no" only, don´t type utsuwa. You´ll see ep 04 there.

I´m having problems with my connection but I´ll try seeding ep 06.
And thanks for ep 05 subs! :D

EDIT: I´m sooo sorry! I can´t open the cd with ep 06, I have to restart everytime I try

Is this subbing project stopped already? this is one of the doramas i've been wanted to watch because i heard Nakai did a great job. And that it's the opposite character from his usual funny and jovile personality we usually see. Well, thanks for the hard work for subbing it and for re seeding the torrents. :-) :thumright:

No, I plan on finishing this project.
The problem is, i've been having major problems downloading ep 6. I changed a new router a couple days ago, it's supposed to be faster but turned out quite the opposite. My download speed has been reduced to a trickle of 5 kbits per second....
I'm trying tofigure out what';s wrong....

Anyhow, I'll work on it once i finished getting the episode - I have only 30% downloaded so far :-(
Thanks memphis for seeding :salut:

Hi

First of all, thanks for the subs! I haven't gotten to watching it yet because of my stupid download limit at my uni dorm but a friend is getting it for me. I'm sure I will like it, I like anything with a good plot usually, so looking forward to this very much.

Secondly, if you have a new router, maybe it doesn't support UPnP (I'm assuming you're using Windows XP here). Try logging in to your router and either activate it or forward the port you're using for whatever bittorrent client you use to it. I'm guessing here but that should be a common problem with new routers and low bt speed.

Just want to say DON'T WORRY, if your torrent client show you are at 99.9% on episode 7, it doesn't need the 0.1% to work pretty well. :-)

You're funny :lol
I love Seicho Matsumoto books too - have you read the one that this drama is based upon? It follows pretty closely to the story, yet it's very different at the same time. The book is about solving the mystery but the drama delves in the human condition - the struggles of Waga. And the writer built the Waga character from scratch - you'll know what I mean if you read the book. I was gonna post something about the book but decided to wait till the series is complete because it may contain spoilers.

I came in to check if there's a seeder for ep 10&11...
Dear seeders, if you are reading this, can you kindly seed 10 & 11 together - I do hope to finish this up soon, thanks much :)

Yes, I read the translation in English last year (Inspector Imanishi Investigates), and I was intrigued to see a different focus right from the start, when they showed the murder in the first episode.

I haven't had the chance to watch as much of this series as I would have liked to, but I was a bit thrown by the fact that
it was so clearly set in the "present day," probably because I had a strong impression of the book as a period piece, especially with the ways that some of the murders are committed and identities are changed. I guess it makes sense that the focus should be on the psychological aspects of the characters since it hardly seems that they'll be showing too much about the social context of the immediate postwar period.
Thanks grommitt for your hard work and looking forward to the rest of the subs! I must say that I do sometimes consume stuff according to translators. I don't usually read mysteries but after reading Matsumoto I picked up Natsuo Kirino and Miyuki Miyabe, partly because I saw that Alfred Birnbaum and Stephen Snyder were the translators and I knew that books they chose to work on would be pretty good.

Ep 10 subs posted ~ thank you, memphistopheles ~

Does anyone know if there are rips of the "making of" for this drama?
I know there's one in the orginal DVD box(Japan version) - it contains a short making of (interviews with casts), a full performance of Shukumei (piano concerto 1&2) by Waga Eiryo, and interviews with Akira Senju (composer), Kentaro Hada (pianist) and Chousei Komatsu (conductor).
I think I saw something at bloodsky's CB - it's a 384mb file titled shukumei - I suspect it's the Shukumei concert by Waga. But my pc doesnt like CB, so....perhaps someone wants to check it out.
I guess i'm being greedy :P Was hoping someone might upload them here...

@ibara: I'm not a big fan of the mystery genre as well, but I still like Seicho Matsumoto books very much. I think the reason is because he creates characters that endear the reader. I tried Miyuki Miyabe as well, but I couldn't feel anything for the protagnists or victims. i find that the characters she creates is lacking "something". And because of this missing 'something", her words/story fail to move me. (just a personal opinion, no offense to Miyabe's fans :P )

Man that travel scene is absolutely breath taking, must have been easier to sub this one since that scene took up like 1/3 of the entire episode :lol! Thanks as always, really looking forward to the finale.

I actually bought the Seicho Matsumoto Book after the watching the first couple episodes from amazon. I've only read the first couple chapters(I'm scared I'm going be getting some crazy spoilers whenever I turn to the next page :lol) but it gave me a new respect for the screenwriter in taking that novel and turning it into such a great blend of human drama and police procedural.

I also saw that there was a movie made in the mid 70's but I haven't been able to find a copy that is actually subtitled.

Thank you for a great drama gromitt, this show has not only become one of my favorite dramas but my all time favorite just because of how successful it is at attempting something different.

I'm curious to why there are so little comments thanking you for choosing such a quality drama, the ratings for the drama were quite good(20%) as well so it's strange to me that more people haven't downloaded this. Oh well, I hope you know there are people who really appreciated your work.

I can relate to ibara , I enjoyed Yasahii Jikan as well and after this drama I will forever be under the assumption that any show you sub will be worth watching :D Thanks again.

I can think of a few :D
1. It's not a current release
2. Doesn't feature pretty young things
3. It's not a story about love.

Maybe we share the same tastes in drama :P
You might want to check out Yasha - did that quite a while ago. It's a crowd pleaser here..

I just found out that a new translated work/novel of Seicho Matsumoto will be released in November this year - titled Pro Bono. Maybe this is of interest to those who like his books.

On a side note, I'm currently working on the subs for the "making of" suna no utsuwa (cause I just got the R2). But it'll be a while before I'm done with it as I'm really really busy these past few months and the next couple as well.... I'll probably upload the raws for the "making of" features when I'm done with the subs, and if no one is sharing it by then.

I have been contemplating buying the region2 dvds myself but the price is steep! Good to see the making of will be up on d-addicts some time in the future, looking forward to it gromitt.

I haven't said thx in this forum since I joined back in 2004.. but I feel Grommit deserves a BIG THX for subbing this drama. One of the best, if not the best drama I've seen. Great performances by all the actors, and the music brings the whole mood to a perfect conclusion. :salut: : :thumleft: :thumright:

You did an amazing job and without them I would never have been able to fully enjoy this series. I am glad it was JSOTW otherwise I would have missed it.
