Hero (Special) [Eng Subs] (Complete)

Postby ccdj » Fri Aug 18, 2006 12:21 pm

Soft subs ripped from dvd..I edited a few lines for grammar mistakes..I'm sorry if you find any error in the subs even after I edited them..do let me know if there is any error or u can correct them yourself..tQ!!!

By the way, the subs synched with the raw video..I downloaded the raw video & I watched it with the subs so dat is how I know it synched with the raw file.. :-)

[Aug 20th 2006] okie....here is the latest updates regarding Hero Special soft subs..apparently there are some mistakes in the subs n some lines are left untranslated..I dunno much Japanese and as I've mentioned earlier the subs are ripped from the dvd I bought so I merely just ripped & correct a few grammar mistakes..Any way, Pokute & Tao Libra are helping me out to correct the error n once they are done I'll post the new edited subs here.It shudn't take long for it to be done. For those who wants to hardsubbed Hero SP wif the original subs, I suggest u guys to put it on hold till the edited subs are out..I'm so sorry for this inconvenience but I can guarantee you won't be dissapointed with the edited subs.. :D

Please do not PM me about seeding any of my old torrents, as most of files that had uploaded are no longer on my computer.

This saturday will be really great. And all thanks to you.

Thank you very much for this work. I hope that anyone also will subtitle the forthcoming Unfair Special and the old Odoru Daisousasen Specials.

However, I've decided not to throw out the translation I made in French, last week (waste of time ? :blink ). But of course I won't retranslate my subtitles in English.

As ccdj mentioned, I am helping to edit the subs, and Tao Libra has also come aboard to do QC and sign translation. In about a week we will have a very nice edited version of these subs available.

Thanks to ccdj for having the inspiration to rip and ocr these subs and then to share them with us, this is a fun show!

Mostly Off-Topic Subtitles-Related Stylistic Opinion Question:

When a character says "Yamete kudasai," and the subber translates that as "Please stop," does that annoy you?

Well, it annoys me. I think the English subtitles should always preserve the Japanese word order whenever it's possible to do so -- and "Stop, please" is just as correct in English as "Please stop," so it grates on my nerves when the word order is changed for no good reason.

That's why I'll make a good QCer: Attention to detail, man.

Or as one ex-girlfriend told me: I'm an obsessive-compulsive, nit-picking perfectionist.

And she thought it was an insult. HA!

In spite of the fear and trepidation which Tao Libra's words engender in my mind (if I had a soul, no doubt that numinous and subtle property would be affected likewise), I acknowlege that what he describes as his own dearly held qualities are those that make a good QC (and unfortunately are also those that make ex-girlfriends).

Everyone should realise that this show is nearly three times the length of a normal dorama episode, and please be patient with us while we make it right (or at least as right as we can).

And she thought it was an insult. HA!

I don't think word order should annoy anyone, as long as meaning is preserved. If translators stuck to word order, we would get lots of inverted sentences in subtitles, and that would annoy me.

But whatever works. I still appreciate quality subs :D

I think Tao Libra explained it clearly, he was pointing out an example where the exact literal translation was correct, yet the word order was reversed. It doesn't bother me either, but the point is apt.

Thank you for working on Hero SP. If by any chance you need some help (although I think you won't), I'd be happy to help you. Actually, I've already finished translating Hero SP from scratch before ccdj posted the subs, so I've already deciphered most of the episode.
However, even though you're already working on it, I think I won't drop this project (French subtitles) ; I hope you don't see any objection. :roll

@Le Piaf - Thank you for your offer! Because I have already put a lot of time into these subs, I will probably not make use of your subs (I am fluent in French), since I have a limited amount of time to dedicate to this project. Had I been aware of your subs earlier I would probably have offered to work with you on an English translation. Please feel free to criticise our results.

I know that we are going to seem ridiculous to some translators because of our half-assed way of approaching this project (starting from poor quality bootleg subs), but please cut us some slack, we are trying our best to avoid making a travesty of it.

Update for people awaiting the edited subs: I am 60% through my edit pass, and have to take a short break to do BusuKoi episode 8. The Hero Special sub translation that we are working from is very bad, and so it is taking a very long time to beat it into sensibility. It will definitely be worth the wait. Note that when I have completed my pass it will go to Tao Libra for QC, and then back to ccdj for final approval. This will take at least another week. Thanks for being patient!

Additional minor update: The subs for BusuKoi episode 9 came hot on the heels of 8, so the delay will be a bit longer... first commitments get first attention ;^)

No, it is the Japanese drama starring Kevin Bacon.... oops, I mean Kimura Takuya.

Whoa, groink — no matter how much you dislike Kimura Takuya, comparing him to Kevin Bacon is just wrong. The worst thing you can say about Kimura Takuya is that he (usually) always plays pretty much the same kind of character… but at least he can play that one type of character well, and he's also charismatic — whereas Kevin Bacon just plain sucks.

Okay, I have finished the second pass editing... And I have PM'ed Tao Libra, so he can start QC. This show is nearly 2 hours long and has a lot of wordplay relating fishing to police work that we are *trying* to preserve. Of course since we have no translator we are JUST PLAIN WRONG MOST OF THE TIME!!

That said, I think that you will find these subs well-timed, and that they use better structured and more idiomatic English than 99% of the other subs out there, and that they respect the work and do it justice. If you disagree, well... do it yourself next time you filthy leechers!!

To any translators that look at these subs: I know that we have committed a travesty - it's just meant to be a better travesty than the "commercial" Chinese subs that we started with. Please don't judge us too harshly.

Is it safe to download these subs yet? Are they all done and dusted?

It will hurt your ears and your eyes if you understand Japanese, even a little bit :D (I think you're in this category :thumright: ). Otherwise, it might be ok.

Please wait for the edited subs. Tao Libra is doing final QC, adding signage and doing general fixups. It's still gonna hurt your eyes if you know Japanese, but if you know exactly as much as ccdj, me and Tao Libra put together, or less, it will look so good you won't believe it.

Maybe I'll give 'em a go then for a laugh!! :lol

On second thoughts...Pokute makes the edited subs sound so good that I think I better wait! I look forward to the finished product!

The unedited subs are nothing to laugh at, they are a crying shame. The only good thing about the subs on those Chinese bootleg dvd's is that they make us look better ;^)

But you must admit that it's enough to understand the plot...
So, although I agree with you on the fact that it's sometimes really a shame, I end up by thinking that doing our best to produce "high quality" subtitles is not worth the whole hours we spend on them... For example, there were friends of mine who were waiting for the translation I was doing ; but at the end, since these subs were posted, they somehow told me "too bad, your subtitles are of no use"...

Is it still ok with open criticism ? :D (just kidding...)

As far as I'm concerned, fansubbers can critique fansubbers. If that's not okay for somebody, I feel sorry for them. Of course, leechers can just keep their bleeding yobs zipped up tight ;^)
