Seo Dong Yo / Ballad of Seodong [Eng Subs] (Complete)

Postby alfredo » Sat Jun 17, 2006 4:57 pm

Image

As coordinator of this Seo Dong Yo English subtitle project, I'm pleased to announce the release of episodes 1-13 English Subtitles for Seo Dong Yo.

The files are timed to Hodoli 700 MB avi files and they are formatted with special characters that display best on a PC or Mac. Many stand-alone DVD players may not be able to display some of the text correctly. In the future, I plan to produce a stand-alone DVD player version....I need one myself! The team has strived to bring to you quality subtitles that are equal to the quality of this most excellent drama. Additional episodes will be posted as they are completed. Who knows, we may make it to 55!

The shamed will give birth to sadness,
sadness will give birth to a child of mistake.
The child of mistake will light up the incense
and the one who lights up the incense
will become a king.
The king will re-establish Baekje,
and gain the greatest glory and honor.

True, episode 1-6 is too brief. and Prinscilla said could do them. and yes i'm going to try my best. i want to see what it's like to sub a whole series. i know it's long to i want to be the first to do that much alone.

Alfredo, I just watched ep 7 with your subs. Good job. If Priscilla can find the time to fill in the missing dialgoue that would be great. I noticed your credit for minor translations...I guess you speak Korean. A 55 episode drama is quite an undertaking...I can relate since I'm working on Only You with Seirin. It takes me so long. I can only speak for myself in this regard ...but I do tend to agonize over words, phrases and punctuation, trying to achieve perfection...I'm sure Priscilla could vouche for that... so when you said you hoped to do one a day I was impressed...skeptical, but impressed! I look forward to more...I do love this drama.

i love this series. thanks alfredo for taking initiatives. i'd like to volunteer to help out in this project but i'm pretty new to d-addicts and only use subtiltle workshop for a month :roll

i have watched the series in Chinese sub. My chinese is pretty basic but i think it's enough to fill in some missing dialogues if that would help.

let me know if i can be of any help.

WOW!!!

You guys are really GREAT!!!

Thanks Alfredo for starting this, and thanks dear gig for your nice input!

Now now, you guys are really motivating me to GO on my own translating work! And I don't feel I'm doing this by myself anymore... There's also Koreancat doing her own subbing at Youtube...

But tis true... the first episodes are less complete. The later episodes become longer and longer... since them more I do it, the more perfectionist I become... and there's ALWAYS mistakes I find I made...

ONE QUESTION THOUGH: I'm really a computer illiterate. While checking out the subs, I noticed some words come out mixed with Korean... I tried changing the encoding, but I don't know how. Am I the only one getting this? Can anyone help me?

Actually the avi files at Youtube are not complete...at least the episodes I watched. A lot of scenes were skipped. My thought was that they leave out what is consider unimportant or missing dialogue translation. I think that Priscilla's dialogue is the most complete, and even she did not do all the scenes until later. I guess no one has ripped the English subs from the HK DVDs....until someone who knows Korean volunteers, that would be a starting point for some of the missing dialogue, although from the comments I've read the HK translation is almost unintelligible at times.

Um'...I agreed with lorac that the English sub from HK version is pretty bad. But surprisingly I found the Chinese sub of the same version in good order. (I compared them with Priscilla's translation and they seem quite accurate)

What I try to do is filling in the missing dialogues by translating from the Chinese sub. Since my Chinese is quite limited, those who know Korean may find some mistakes in it. I'l be glad if someone who know Chinese or Korean re-edit what I have done to perfect our sub. :salut:

I'm almost done with Ep. 8 missing dialogues. :D

This will be the last for sometime due to the fact that I've aggravated an old back injury. as a result of this speed subtitling (4 days straight).

hope you're not appointed as i promised subs but circumstance prevents.

Don´t worry no subber releases 1 sub every day...especially not for a 55 episode Drama :D ...take your time we are patient.

@lorac
But the later episodes seem to be complete on youtube...just the first episodes are incomplete...but they are good enough to catch up till ep 7 and than use alfredos subs :-)

no there are no subs for ep. 1-6 yet due to no translation.

note it might take quite sometime for it to be done. I'll do it after I finish ep. 55. so that's a long time, provided the translation is done.

Repeating what others are saying, take your time...

As for moi... Due to unexpected happenings in my life, I must slow down, but I still want to do this. So instead of translating 2 episodes per/week, I'll try to do at least one...

Wow alfredo... thanks for starting this..
I love this series and have been reading priscilla's translation and watching koreancat's uploads on youtube... I would love to watch the HQ episodes with English subs.

I am really hoping that SBS will release the official DVD boxset with English subs.... what do you guys think of that possibility ?

I'm hoping .... but no one seems to know or care. I keep asking Yesasia, but it is not a big deal to them. They are quite non-commital. Somehow I think the fans care more than SBS, but them one day they will most likely release it. Maybe some of our Korean friends can pose the question to SBS.

I'd say go with the Hodoli, an excellent quality avi, especially with the later episodes, and if needed adjust the subs.

Im not whinning, i just find it odd, there is several jumps between the sub translation? I know there are diffrent translator for ep 1-6 and the 7-, but why not work togheter and finish the 1-6? and than continue from there. Everything else is splendid and keep up the good work.

Actually, the subs are in raw form and are not timed to the avi files. They require editing... a lot! The English is atrochious. Some sentences don't even make sense. I'm editiing episode 1 now. I'll leave it to the original poster to repost the files.

Yeah, I realized how bad the subtitle were, when I read about them from pople who had bought it.

Nice work lorac :thumleft:

I think whoever is doing the subtitle for selling should hire someone like you or the fan-subbers, that way we can guarantee quality subs 8)

Its a shame I don't know enough Korean to help you out, hehe

Priscilla's translation is so much better. They should have hired her! I find it hard to believe that the posted subs are SBS. Only You had issues, but nothing like these. I cannot guarantee subs will be posted in a timely manner... perfection is something to strive for. The drama itself is perfection, the subs should be of the same quality. Anyone who has seen the Only You subs might agree that taking one's time has merit.

Someone might want to do a quick edit and timing for those who do not want to wait. The subs are so bad I need to find a Korean collaborator just to figure out what some of the characters are saying.

Would the person who posted the rips please contact me via PM?

Hey!
Sylver's CB doesn't have MQ raws anymore so I was wondering if someone knows a CB where I might find them?!

Hi,

I have a question.

Volume 1 was in standard format, meaning that the image was cropped, about 50% from the widescreen version available on the net (I checked). Yesasia's website says that for volumes 2 and 3, the image will be widescreen (like it was broadcasted on tv):

http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/a ... 004495088/

http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/a ... 004495087/

Anybody knows if it is true? If so, what were they thinking, releasing 1/3 of the series pan and scan and the rest in widescreen format...

Also, does anybody know if they are going to re-release volume 1 in widescreen this time?

Thank you.

I have been back and forth with Yesasia on this issue. I bought part One, but it sits unopened because of the 4:3 issue. Besides that, the subtitles are of poor quality. I'm returning the boxset, but first had to come to terms with Yesasia's return policy. The customer service rep knows that I'm returning it because it is 4:3, and she has not said anything about the aspect ration of part 2 and 3. I think I'll ask her.

Other sites listed Part One as anamorphic widescreen 16:9, but when I questioned it, was told it was a listing mistake and it is really 4:3. The box for Part One says 4:3 also. Unless you are told by Yesasia that Part 2 and 3 are 16:9 and they agree to take it back at their expense if it is not, then you should wait for confirmation. Yesasia's website did not list Part One as Standard until after it shipped. Even at that, if the subtitles are like the ones posted here, I'm not sure if even a 16:9 version is worth it. Those subs are painful to read.

man, i am completely absorbed by SDY ( AGAIN ) I spent the whole weekend -- can't believe it's already Monday 1AM now --- re-reading the translations and watching many episodes hehehe...

I just downloaded the later episodes (ep43-end) from the batch torrent I found and thanks to the detailed translation by Priscilla I could understand what they're saying... oh btw the subs posted by alfredo for ep44-46 work well with the rmvb files.. I need to adjust ep44 by 1 second but the timings for ep45 and 46 were perfect !

I sent a PM to koreancat (from youtube) asking if she would share her sub files with us since she's been translating up to ep30 and she said YES !!!! so I'm now waiting for her email...

I too have been absorbed with Seo Dong Yo, working on the DVD sub rips. It is quite interesting the different interpertations. Case in point. Episode 5, Jang's first appearance after 10 years, the DVD subs have him saying:

Yes, 10 years
It's time to forgive him.

Priscilla's translation is:

Yes, it’s 10 years already!

It’s about time for them
to forgive me.

Quite a difference, right? Priscilla's is more correct.

I don't have ep5 to check what you pointed out, but it seems that those 2 sentences wouldn't be said by the same person... so depends on who said it... if it is Jang, the Priscilla's would fit.

Btw koreancat sent me her transcript of ep30, but it doesn't have any timing. I just asked if she could send me a timed version. ... but unfortunately she said she doesn' save the previous episodes' translation.. (she said she deleted ep26-29). But.. she said that she will send me future translation.

oh man.. it's 8AM .. i need to get to work hehhe... can you believe that the first I checked in the morning is this SDY thread again :)

The dialogue is the first scene with Jo Hyun Jae as Jang. His name appears in Korean as Seo Dong, but the Princess is the only one who calls him that. It is an important scene as it is ten years later and sets the mood of what follows. Priscilla's translation is correct. Jang's comment is not to forgive "him" meaning Mokrasu, but comment that it's about time Haneulchae accept him. The scenes that follows defines the dialogue.

It is also interesting to know that Sataek Giroo has been with Haneulchae for 10 years, integrating himself in the group. When you think of it in those terms, his actions in later episodes define his betrayal to the group and Mokrasu in particular. I never quite understood by Jang would knowingly allow a spy and traitor to remain in their midst. I guess he was an idealist and thought Sateak Giroo would have a change of heart. But them Jang was that way to the end.

With so many people doing subtitles for this drama, part of me wants to stop, but another part wants to continue, if for no others but myself. Alfredo, since you own this thread, you should link all your subtitles on the first page and delete any duplications. This way people won't need to search through the thread to find them. You could categorize them by author/editor... sorta like it was done in the Only You thread. Just a suggestion... can you tell I like order!

Yesasia's reply follows:
Referring to your enquiry on "Seo Dong Yo" vol. 2 and 3, as updated by the supplier, the screen format should be of 4:3 only. The information will be updated soon. We apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Would you mind sharing the ones you've completed with us here ?

The subtitles are not ready to release. I've only done a first draft and there are still several things I need to address. Namely, the translations that are sorta literal but don't make sense. For those I need to consult with a Korean. Also, my collaborator has not looked at the files. She and I strive to correct the poor grammar and misuse of the English language and to make it as perfect as possible, and she is also an excellent timer. We are the same team that brought you Only You... was it worth the wait for those subs?

I'm sure everyone is anxious, but it does take time to perfect the subtitles. I spent 3 different nights going over episode 5 and finally got it, and just started on 6. Still need to go back over 1-4 to fix some issues. I have not even had time to watch the latest Jumong...that's my sacrifice, but Seo Dong Yo is worth it.

As for "hou leng jai" I am not Chinese, so I cannot translate the Chinese subs. My website is named to describe the content... good looking guys!

Alright .. I know you strive for perfection :) hehe

lorac wrote: We are the same team that brought you Only You... was it worth the wait for those subs?!

Yes of course it was! But I didn't wait until you were done with all of the episodes. I would have if I have enough space on my HD. That time I already finished watching the series and needed to burn them to DVD to free up some space.
It's the same issue now.. I currently have 15 Gb+ of SDY episode which I have finished watching.. (90% dependent of the translation/summary 10% from my limited Chinese reading ability) I really want to burn them so that I can lend them to friends hehe you know spread the virus of SDY and JHJ hehe .. The other reason that I want to burn them is so that I can watch it on my laptop .. portable :) but I hate to burn the episodes without subtitles :p Well I guess I could just burn them temporariliy just to back them up, so I have space to download other series. When all the good subs become available I can make a new set of DVDs.

Hehe Jumong is also next on my list.. but I'm going to wait until they finished subbing the whole series... I'm afraid I'm gonna be as obsessed as I am with SDY.. I can't have another obsession on top of my daily work now.. :)

Sorry guys, I don't have any of the raws for this drama, otherwise I would split and sync the subs myself before posting them.

Don't worry about splitting them. Most likely Afredo will do it. Thank you for posting these. Did you buy the dvd boxset?

As much as I like Jumong, it is not the obsession that Seo Dong Yo was/is. Although after reading some of the synopsis I had better watch the last 4 episodes. Only 16 out of 43 episode subtitles have been released so you might have a wait! I wouldn't bother waiting, just read the synopsis and watch without subs.
