Donation

Postby Ruroshin » Wed Apr 07, 2004 10:17 am

UPDATE 2009.12.28

I like to thank everybody who has donated and wanted to donate but there is no need for donation anymore as the ads we're hosting is generating sufficient revenue to cover the cost of running the site.

UPDATE 2007.09.30

Do not send donation to paypal anymore.

When D-Addicts started I was ok paying for hosting but it has grown pretty quickly since then to the point that I now have to use dedicated servers to host it.

Dedicated hosting is expensive so if you like this site and would like to help keep it alive then please donate what you can. All donation received will go towards paying for the servers.

server cost
 • 2004 $1,134
 • 2005 $3,402
 • 2006 $4,693
 • 2007 $6,678
 • 2008 Jan $580

total cost:$16,492

total donated:$9,369

Do not send me any further donation through paypal. Paypal doesn't seem to like it so I will find an alternative.

Be careful when working with money orders for Australia. In the U.S., Australia doesn't accept the postal money orders. They do, however, accept Western Union MOs.

roughly, how much additional bandwidth usage on top of the allocated quota are the sites using? are there more than one dedicated box?

$400+/month sounds like a nice boxen with 1.5-2TB of bandwidth (incoming/outgoing combined)

Yes but they are bad on the limits.
Maximum transfers top out at a level of 15,000 Euro per 90 days, which is bad for businesses.

Business accounts on PayPal are unlimited on the other hand.

MoneyBooker fees are slightly lower but more complicated to get approved with and verified by.

You can only get a decent level of transfer rates when using business accounts and have a mailing address approved.

---
Kagi payments might be good, but could open a can of worms.
Kagi is by the way based in Asia so that is very close to home for the origination of the stuff we do.

---
WorldPay might work, but I have no epxerience with them, though judging from the charges I3ve seen they seem fairly unscrupelous.
Just got ripped of for £250 by them which they take no responsibility for.

FYI MoneyBooker for those who wonder is like pyapal for europe but with gobal support, and they are registered with the FSA in London, UK.
This is no guarantee though because when you call tech support from them it sounds like a guy sitting in his living room running it.
If paypal keeps working, its your best bet.

Can someone tell me how I can make donation to this wonderful site? Just joined since last month and really enjoying watching two great historical dramas. Also amazed at all the dedicated individuals involved in keeping this site going. Would really like to help out a little with a donation. Thanks.

I have and the reason I haven't tried using it yet is because its basically designed for purchasing goods or services which d-addicts doesn't really do. I also haven't seen it used as a donation mechanism used in any website yet. Will wait until I see it become more common and google won't just pull the plug like paypal did.

D-Addicts is bringing me so much joy at the moment that I would like to do a little something for the site.

What is the best way of doing a donation? (I got a bit lost as I read through all the posts in this thread). Do you still accept Paypal or have you given up on it?

Anyway, thank you for putting this website to our disposition :thumright:

i'm not sure if D-Addict's current donation methods are working. so for now, ad-clicking would be acceptable, haha

For now, I don't think Ruroshin is actively looking for donations. Instead, click on the ads.

Any of the ads here generate revenue for D-Addicts. If you click on an ad hosted by Google Adsense, the site will receive a commission. If you purchase from YesAsia via the link from D-Addicts, the site will receive commission from the sale. I think even just by browsing YesAsia without purchasing anything, D-Addicts will receive something (but not as much as if you bought something.) But when dealing with YesAsia, you MUST use the link from D-Addicts. If you simply type in the YesAsia URL into your browser, D-Addicts won't receive credit.

Thanks for the offer but there's no need for donation anymore, the ads on the wiki is generating enough to cover for the whole site now. :-)

Ruroshin, how much does it cost to have a button alongside yesasia.com?

Ruroshin, is the situation still the same?

Postby leimomi » Mon Nov 01, 2010 2:59 am

Dear Ruroshin,

Thank you for all your hard work in keeping up this site. :-)

However, at the end of last week, I kept getting the message that the domain name had expired and wondered.... :-( was everything okay?

I know that about a year ago, you wrote that you did not need any donations since the ads were generating sufficient income.

Is this still the same? Does it cover all the costs? Has the situation changed?

Thank you for your reply. I was a bit worried....

Sincerely,

Marillynn (leimomi)

From what I know D-Addicts.com is doing fine financially. The cost of hosting this website has actually gone down. Because of the DMCA take down notices for our tracker, we had to shutdown the tracker server and all of the bittorrent files are now using external 3rd party trackers. So that's one server we don't paid for anymore.

I don't know about hosting company D-Addicts.com is using, but the cost of hosting has drop dramatically in recent years. I personally have the share server that cost me $35 per year and I could had it for $15 per year, if I had gone with less space/memory/bandwidth.

Anyway, Ruroshin has been pretty much hands off with this site. He is letting the admins/moderators take care of all of the day to day issues regarding this site. But renewing the domain is all down to him, since he's the owner of it.

The cost of running D-Addicts.com is totally now by the ad banner and we don't need any donation nor new sponsor.
Please do not PM me about seeding any of my old torrents, as most of files that had uploaded are no longer on my computer.

Hello everyone, XrayMind is pretty much correct. We are doing fine financially although we did take a massive dive this week due to the recent problem but I expect things to get back to normal in a few weeks time. The way the ads work they do punish you if the site is not 100%. Avail at all times, we took like a 50% cut and it'll prob take a bit to get back up to par again.

The domain expiry was caused by the original register I was with got bought out so they started up another one and I moved over. I thought I had auto renewal in place so I didn't check very diligently for expiry obviously the auto renewal did not work which caused this mess. Anyway I will make it doesn't happen again.
