Synopsis
The 24th NHK Taiga Drama is Inochi.

The drama is set on August 18, 1945, three days after the end of the Pacific war. A freight train completely jam-packed with passengers heading for Aomori from devastated Tokyo. Among those weary-looking passengers, It's the heroine of this drama: Miki Takahara (20) and also her sister Sachi (16). When there is apparently no more room for any extra passengers at the railway station, Miki hears a woman shouting to the passengers to let her in because her mother is dying. Miki impulsively extends her hand to help the woman to get on board the train; the woman then introduces herself to Miki and Sachi as Haru Muranaka (20). Miki and Sachi are the daughters of a wealthy landlord living in a village in the Tsugaru area in Aomori prefecture but they have been living in Tokyo since before the war to attend school. A few days after Miki and Sachi have safely come home, a young man wearing a naval officer's uniform, suddenly visits the Takaharas' house with Haru late in the evening. He says that he rescued Haru when she threw herself into the sea. Miki finds, however, that Haru's real intention in coming to Aomori was to see her wartime lover who had returned to his parents' home in Aomori, in order to tell him that she is expecting his baby; but Haru's lover had refused her, saying that there was no evidence that the baby was actually his.

I will not be able to provide subtitles for the complete drama. Subtitles have been transcribed from an old VHSrip, some scenes or complete episodes are missing. I’m hoping that maybe someone will be able to help out and translate those. Information about untranslated parts and missing episodes can be found here. Unfortunately no Japanese subtitles exist.

If you're interested in helping out, please send me a PM.

Feel free to translate into other languages.
Please, do not stream or make profit from these subtitles.

Subtitles: JN Productions (a little revised)
Transcriber, editor, timer: keiko1981
Transcriber: Rashomon (ep11-)
Additional translation: nuve (ep1, 4, 8, 10, 13, 21)
Special thanks to: Avallac'h, Rashomon, and Sigurd.

Subtitles sync to videos at Nyaa.

Drama Notes
ep11 GI: was originally an initialism for Galvanized Iron; during the 1930s the usage expanded to stand for Government Issue; by World War II it had become a nickname for the military personnel themselves.

Interesting fact, Inochi has the same narrator, screenwriter, and music composer as in Oshin. Kobayashi Ayako (young Oshin), Izumi Pinko (Fuji, Oshin's mother), and Akagi Harue (Hisa) appear in Inochi as well.

With a better capture card, it looks like I might be able to get some of the missing episodes from the old VHS tapes -- keeping my fingers crossed, but so far I have Ep19 that was missing from the previous captures.

If you can't rip these episodes, but VHS can still be played, I think even CamRip from your TV would be good for transcribing's purpose.
As long as it's possible to read subtitles.
Let's save as more translation as possible. And let's hope later someone can help with missing parts/episodes.
Looking for volunteers, who want to transcribe subtitles for some old dramas. (Yonigeya Honpo, Sweet Home and others)
More details here.

Episode 11: Miki graduates, and Haru meets a struggling author that she wants to help.

Thanks to Rashomon for helping out and transcribing and fill in some missing parts.

Some notes.
GI: was originally an initialism for Galvanized Iron; during the 1930s the usage expanded to stand for Government Issue; by World War II it had become a nickname for the military personnel themselves.

Not sure about this line.
26:10 "Onlles" wouldn't be accepted in America.

Episode 19: Miki studies medicine in Seattle for one year together with Naohiko.

A few English lines I had trouble with. 19:14-19:25, 29:56-29:58, other than that the episode is complete.

question: missing means that you don't have subs for transcribing? or episodes are missing?
