Hakuba no Oujisama [Eng Subs] (Ep 1-2 of ?) [DROPPED]

Postby Jyonosuke » Mon Oct 07, 2013 9:42 pm

I just finished subtitles for Episode 1 of Hakuba no Oujisama.

Please ask for my permission if you want to upload them anywhere other than this site.

I'm also doing subs for other Dramas too. You can find them on my blog Hello Heydays if you're interested.

The raws I used can be found on J-Drama City.

Enjoy.

Thank you for subbing this drama.

Some suggestions, increase the font size.

Generally I try to keep the font size to 30px and choose a font that is easy to read like: Arial, Tahoma or Verdana.

Also try to keep lines at most 39 charcters long.

Some more rules I follow when make subtitles myself.

Good advice. Will implement these ideas next episode. I need to think more about how it appears to the people who watch it.

Thank you for the subtitles. Your effort is greatly appreciated. I also like your translation a lot. I'm a translator myself, so I'm happy when I see English subtitles where the meaning isn't butchered.
Sadly, I'll have to criticize some things and hope that it won't offend you.

1) May I suggest using Aegisub for the scripts? Aegisub comes with a built-in spellchecker which you can use after translating the script. It's really convenient and your scripts contain a lot of spelling mistakes. Please kindly note that words such as "each other", "a lot" and so on are never written together (easily fixable by using the built-in spellchecker. You can easily click on "ignore" whenever spellchecker marks names or other Japanese stuff as a mistake). And it's not "gunna" but "gonna". While "gunna" is basically the same as "gonna", you rarely see people actually write it (it is probably used a lot on tumblr or some other site such as 4chan). It's usually "gonna". "Gunna" is really inane and probably only used by Internet kids who want to appear "cool". Avoid "gunna" in your scripts. You can use it in your free time or when you talk to friends, but using it in a script, which is downloaded by many people, is really amateur-like. Besides, using slang doesn't fit the characters in this show at all, IMHO. They are teachers after all. But you are the translator and you can decide that for yourself.

2) Punctuation marks. You either do them or not. Some sentences that were longer were confusing because of a missing comma or period. I don't think it takes that much of time to place a comma or a period.

Anyway, I hope you'll appreciate these pointers and wish you the best of luck with this show. I'm your fan and think this show is marvelous!

Hi! I know this is a thread for another subbing project, but are you planning to continue subbing episodes 7-9 of Glass no Ie? :) Thanks.

I'm a real spelling-Nazi, (not good with grammer since English isn't my first language.)
Oh dear, "gunna"? I have never come across it. I can only think of it being used in slang speech.
"Gonna" slang as well, of "going to" But it could be okay subtitles, depending on the theme/situation.
And personally, always use punctuation.

It seems the fansubber for Hakuba no Oujisama has dropped this show.

Excerpt from Jyonosuke's Blog wrote:I will not being finishing off Hakuba no Oujisama. It was a good drama but I only got to Episode 2 of it and I want to put my energy into something new. There was a pretty overwhelming response for Glass no Ie and I had done over half of it so I decided it would be best to finish it off. I don’t mind leaving things 10% done but I dislike leaving things 70% done.

I’d like to thank everyone who has supported my subbing up until now, there were some pretty unfortunate things written about me on some drama viewing sites but I’ve come to realise that it’s all just part of subbing and that I’m lucky to have people to encourage me despite everything else. You can download Episode 7′s subtitles below and like I said I will be posting the subtitles for the remaining episodes over the next month or so. Sorry for the wait and I hope that you enjoy them.

Unless Jyonosuke magically decides to continue, I'll finish Hakuba no Oujisama during my upcoming semester break. I have finished watching Hakuba no Oujisama and I liked it. I don't care whether people care about the show or not. It deserves a completion.

Also, I strongly hope that the latter complain in your post wasn't related to my post here. If you can't take legitimate criticism, then maybe you shouldn't sub anymore. I wasn't trying to attack and/or offend you. If I have hurt your pride, then you need to sort it out with your inner self. You won't grow as a fansubber and as a human being when you are constantly around biased people who are all, "You are amazing! Ignore the hater!"
Yes, your Japanese knowledge is amazing, but your English scripts could use some refinement.
