I do hope you’ll enjoy this episode as much as I have. One of the things I loved about this episode is the amount of silly activity going on in the background. Unfortunately, quite often, there’ll be people speaking at the same time, so there’s a chance you’ll miss it all while reading the subs (especially if you’re a slow reader =/ ).
In any case, my point is that this special is good for a re-watch or two. Even if you caught everything the 1st time around, the Odoru Daisousasen series is just pure class, so watch it again anyway ;-)
And now, here come the TL notes!
You don’t really need them to understand the subs, as I tried to keep the script as smooth flowing as possible, but if you want more authenticity or just don’t like my TL, you can change the script yourself after reading the notes =P
Police Organization and Hierarchy
First, some pretty pics regarding ranks etc: Table of Ranks; Rank Insignia; MPD Organization; NPA Organization
The depiction of the Japanese police in the series differs somewhat from real life at times, but in this episode, all the ranks/positions quite thankfully reflect reality \o/.
I tried to keep the translations as close to the official names as possible, but some have been changed:
- Community Safety Section --> Public Safety Section
Criminal Investigation Section --> Detective Section
Criminal Investigation Section Chief --> Chief of Detectives
Criminal Investigation Bureau --> Detective Bureau
As you may already be aware, although police stations have their own “Violent Crimes” divisions (as part of the Detective Section), the stations have limited authority when it comes to serious stuff like murder, and this is where HQ staff come in.
The HQ has a much larger “Detective Bureau” and has a whole section devoted to “Violent Crimes” (1st Investigation Section), and from this section, they will send out the relevant “Division(s)” to set up an “investigation headquarters (sousa honbu)” at the local police station, where the local cops support the HQs’ efforts . Of course, there must be someone in charge, and the lead HQ investigator is called “kanrikan”: [investigation] director/supervisor.
- “Investigation HQ” is annoying to work with, so I’ve called it an “official inquiry”.
Torigai is referred to by his rank (superintendent) rather than by his position (director), to avoid confusion with a different type of director.
Yen: I don’t like flipping currencies around, but a general rule of thumb is 100 JPY = 1 USD. Just take off 2 zeros ;-)
Nakoudo: This is the “matchmaker” or “go-between” who is responsible for setting up the infamous “omiai” (arranged marriage interview). However, at a wedding reception, a nakoudo’s role is similar to a western-style “best man” (they introduce the newlyweds, give speeches etc) . The nakoudo is usually also an older couple (traditionally, your boss and his wife), and thus, they become like a 3rd set of honorary parents to the couple. Supposedly, modern day marriages in metropolitan areas are less likely to have a nakoudo, but hey, I guess the police are just traditionalists ^^.
Long story short, Nakoudo = matchmaker = best man/honorary parents.
PS: If anyone has a JP script for the un-subbed specials, I’d be glad to tl that too! If you have an eng sub, well... I wish you’d upload it =P
PPS: Lol... if anyone else was as bad as me in searching the forum, there's a 480p version here: http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_118098.htm
