I've been working on this series for a few weeks now. I finished translating eps 1-4 and half of ep 5. After I edit them a little bit, I'll release them sometime soon. Then I'm going on vacation for awhile. When I get back I'll finish up the rest of the series.

This is funny how many people are subbing Motokare--because I did episode one for a hardsubbing group, since some ppl might not have the RAWs, I guess.

Is JTV finally doing Motokare after 2 years after announcing it?

I highly doubt that JTV will continue the series. If they do, then that's great, but then again, who really knows.

HAS IT BEEN 2 years already? I've been with JTV for almost 2 years and I didn't hear anything about subbing Moto Kare until last year. You must have some inside information that I dunno about.

 Thanks for the softsubs.

I was so excited when I saw this available, since I endured watching Moto Kare raws while not understanding Nihongo, hoping to get by body language and some basic phrases. XD

I was just wondering, why we have subtitles now for episodes 1 to 5, and 7? 6 was skipped?

is there a way we can get the progress/status of each of the subs? i kinda check 1-2 times a day and it would be a lot easier if i saw a 10%, 20% completed, even 0% would be helpful then i know not to check for a few days.

Wouldn't that be more time consuming and delaying to the subs to put progress percentages? :P

I've done a quick edit of the subtitles for Episode 1 (fixes in grammar, typos, some line changes). I'll be doing some of the other episodes as I watch along. If you like the edits, then use them. If you don't then don't. =)

Feel free to edit my subs too :D Just don't remove my credits or the little warning. Also, don't remove the japanese suffixes like -san, -kun, etc. There's also a few other very minor inconsistencies between tiny's transcribed subs and my translated subs, but nothing that would hurt the flow of the story.

OK, for consistency's sake, did Tiny and you want to agree on translating -san's to Miss and Mr.? Would Tiny mind if I switched to -san's and -chan's?

Me and tiny are both kinda doing our own thing, independently. He's transcribing from some tv rips, and I'm translating the episodes that he doesn't have. I prefer keeping the suffixes b/c some don't have a real english translation like -kun or -chan. And even the absence of a suffix has meaning :D

I'd tend to agree with junkboy77 about that. I think we are all familiar enough with Japanese culture to not need san swapped out for Mr. and Ms. The -kun and -chan really are irreplaceable.

Question:
While my Japanese language learning is really just beginning, I can't help but notice that sometimes there is a jarring inaccuracy between the subtitles and spoken text. I can't remember what I was watching, probably a Singapore Goggles 8 subtitle show, but it had me yelping. Is this just because I don't yet fully understand the Japanese language and the subtle meanings that may be greater than the words themselves and the words could mean something less obvious than what I heard, or is it just some space cadet translator making it up as he goes along?

I can't speak for other translators, but I try my best to stay true to the japanese dialogue. But when a 1:1 translation justs sounds too bizarre in english, then I just try to translate the essence of what they're trying to say. I also try to avoid using english cliches, but sometimes have to use them :( Can't be perfect.

Sometimes, something becomes a cliche because it's true...
Cliches really don't bother me so much... Sometimes its like a nod and a wink...

That's got me thinking...are there any Japanese cliches that are difficult to translate into English?

Thx thetenken, I also noticed that some dialogue seem a bit strange. Anyway, can't wait for ep6 :w00t:

One Japanese cliche - "domo"
You'll hear it for so many occasions, but there are many meaning (I think)

There's many!!! That's when translating gets creative. Sometimes you could spend hours just on one line... :|

There are idioms that are hard to translate. These are not really cliches, but phrases that have a different meaning than the words that make up the phrase.

I was at a bookstore this weekend and I almost bought a book of Japanese idioms but it seemed like a very incomplete book for the price. So I didn't get it, so I can't list any here. Sorry. But in English some idioms are:
once in a blue moon = rarely, seldom
read someone the riot act = be very angry with someone :x
Get with the program = pay attention, observe what's happening around you, think what your role should be and do it

Blue moon came to mind but i got the others from http://home.t-online.de/home/toni.goeller/idiom_wm/

Anyone want to list japanese idioms? Maybe start a new thread on Japanese idioms.

Edit to add Japanese idiom web site

Thanks, wakopin.

The second link you added on Japanese proverbs has this example:
壁に耳あり、障子に目あり (Kabe ni mimi ari, shoji ni me ari) -- one may not be fully aware of how closely one is being monitored by others (lit. the walls have ears, the doors have eyes) The English equivalent is just the walls have ears.

I can see how difficult it is to translate things. It's hard enough trying to explain to a non-native English speaker phrases like "You drive me up the wall sometimes"

a.k.a. "The Revenge of the Subber"

Re: suffixes etc., I transcribe exactly what I see in the TV rip. The translation is done by a translation company and it's their choice of words you're seeing. Junkboy77 is doing the translation in his own way as he said earlier. I'm not opposed to changing the suffixes in 'my' subs to create a more consistent set of subs for the series. There will be one more episode coming from me (ep 8 ) and again it will be transcribed exactly as I see it in the TV-rip. Putting in the suffixes is left to anyone who wants to do that.

OK, I've made continuity edits to episodes 1-3. Here they are. Added some information like who sang the theme songs as well. Don't know if I should do a "starring" so and so or not. Let me know if this is desirable.

Thank you for editing the subs, the tenken ^_^

So we're only missing subs for Ep 6 and 8-10?

It seems that #6 is being finished right now.

Episode 4 edited. Let me know if there are any other consistency problems.

sorry i forgot that we were doing the "san" thing on these subs and only did Mr. and Miss as provided. I just adjusted time and fixed a couple of glitches, hope you enjoy them...

Out of shame I also did a quick substitution of san chan and kun where i heard it in the soundtrack (I really love Subtitle Workshop's transport, very smooth). Sometimes they didn't say anything that I was able to recognize so I left the name without an endearment/honorific. Sometimes I didn't hear a name but it was already there in the subs (I think they were copied from a television rip with subs) so I left it. I am posting the chan/san/kun version here. I've used thetenken's nomenclature. I think these conform with the exception of the extra bits included in thetenken's version. thetenken, if you need to make changes, let me know and i'll swap out my version with your edit to prevent too much confusion.
